LASERTOENAILCENTER.COM OF LONG ISLAND

Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

Patriot Day

Students, staff and administration at Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, NY, celebrated Patriot Day on September 11th. On a beautifully sunny, cloudless, morning, the colorfully dressed students in their red, white and blue outfits recited the Pledge of Allegience, and sang patriotic songs around the outdoor flagpole. School principal Ms. Susan White led the students in the pledge as well as singing

the school song Together, We Can Reach Our Goals. Mrs. Verron, John Pearl Music teacher, led the students in song, and singled out 5th graders Lauren Edwards, Catherine Josefak and Elizabeth Fazzingo for their leadership. Ms. White talked to the students about patriotism, and heroes, past and current, including those they live with, that love and protect them. Ms. White thanked the students for their attention, as well as the

teachers, staff, members of the PTA and District Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman, who participated in the moving ceremony. As students begin the new school year, they had the opportunity to join together to remember the heroes of 9/11. Patriot Day is celebrated on September 11th as Americans remember, and honor, those who perished in the terrorist attacks on that day in 2001.

Catching Up By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

243788N1017

Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two. Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent. What are we, four weeks into the new TV season? I would say, cumulatively, that

I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists. And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say? Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters. It’s amazing that when you

subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to. But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list. Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives. Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

They considered the different climates and hypothesized how their lives would change depending on their resources and environment. Focusing on one of the school’s learning objectives, “Who Am I,” the students then engaged in a learning activity in which they had to guess the type of animal identified on a picture taped to their back based on information provided by their peers. After guessing their animals, the students researched those creatures to learn about their habitats and

Attention People with Hearing Loss!

the characteristics that make them unique. As a class, the third- and fourth-graders also studied various species of birds. In addition to the adaptations and characteristics that they had already learned about, the students discussed the purposes of the birds’ feathers, explored some of the species’ identifying marks, and inferred the distinctive behaviors a bird might exhibit based on its characteristics. Using the school’s SMART Board and laptop technology, the students had the chance to design a bird and complete a writing assignment about their creations, including describing their bird’s physical characteristics and habitat. Following these exercises, the students took to the outdoors to observe Long Island’s birds and to chart their observations in their class journals. As a conclusion to their study of birds and animal adaptations, the students read the Nicola Davies story White Owl, Barn Owl and learned about an owl’s diet by examining an owl pellet. They identified and compared the different types of bones found in the owl pellets and created a bar graph to indicate their results.

Woodhull Elementary School third- and fourthgrade students recently participated in an environmental activity called Adaptations We Can See (Body Parts and Coverings). Through both hands-on lessons and lectures, the students were challenged to think about the differences among certain animals and the ways specific animals adapt to change. Beginning with a discussion on humans, the students examined the different things that people do when they are cold or warm, and how temperature affects us.

Raising Funds People traveled from all over Long Island, upstate and New York City to Montauk on Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day) to cheer on Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique, and her dog Sydney at the tail end of their journey of walking 70-miles in four days to raise awareness and funds for two charitable organizations. A Journey Four Paws was Irene’s way of doing something to make a positive impact on getting a dog park built in her hometown in Selden, NY and to raise awareness about Arthritis - in which both her and her dog suffer from. But because of their daily long walks it helps keep them fit and the arthritis at bay. It was her personal journey to do this and had support from pet lovers and pet companies from all over the United States as well as Canada. “I feel great that I put my mind to something and did it. I hope others

can realize that ‘anything is possible.’ I learned early on that life is a journey; A Journey Four Paws had a lot of meaning for me on a personal level - taking the negatives that come our way in life and turning them into positives in each day no matter how bad it may be. I’ve learned so much from my dogs over the years and they give me so much love and ask for so little. We enjoy the outdoors and being together, so seeing Long Island from a walking perspective with them was a wonderful and rewarding experience. And to have raised some money for 2 very important organizations to me is a bonus,” said Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique. At ‘the end’ of her Journey there was a Pet Celebration event in Montauk, of Long Island, was also a pet festival with pet vendors, music, food, raffles, prizes for best HOWL-o-ween costumes and more.

While donations for A Journey Four Paws are still coming in, Irene estimates to have raised a about two thousand dollars at this point, to be split and donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and to Central Suffolk Paws a division of LI-Dog. Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park. Central Suffolk Paws is working with the Town of Brookhaven to build a dog park, and the money donated will go towards building one in the near future. Irene is also turning 50 in the early part of 2013 and really wanted to mark her 50th year with a unique way to give back too! For more info about Irene's Journey go to http://www.barksnbubbles li.com/2445.html.

Start2Stop is a twelve week program directed to those who have had involvement with drug or alcohol use, and may have had professional or personal consequences, but not as a violent or high-level offense.

their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. Light Travels Unlike other light, which scatters, laser light travels in only one direction.

Journeying Back In Time As a kickoff to their study on the first Americans, fourth-grade students at Academy Street Elementary School had an opportunity to learn about Native Americans during a hands-on workshop. The program, Journey Into Native American Territory, brought the history and lives of the Eastern Woodlands people into the classroom through visual

presentations and group activities. Students began the day of exploration by watching a video about Native Americans and crafting clay pots using traditional techniques and materials. Following the art project, the students visited a museum of artifacts that included animal pelts, musical instruments, traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools. They also

each took a turn grounding corn, touring a replica longhouse and playing the games of Native American children, which encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills. Before concluding the day, the fourth-graders had the chance to take part in a simulated election activity that reinforced the lessons they learned throughout the day.

Selected To Perform

Each spring, the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) holds auditions for music students and delivers grades and rankings for their individual performances. Based upon these auditions, music students are selected to perform in several prestigious musical venues. Those students who have earned the AllCounty selection for their outstanding musical talents will perform at the Division Four NYSCAME 2012 All-County Festival in November.

Based upon the highest grades and excellent rankings of their superior performances, the AllState music students have been selected to perform in the All-State Festival in Rochester this December. Sayville Music Department, directed by Mr. Hoffman, congratulates the following students who have been selected as NYSSMA All-State and AllCounty musicians for the 2012-2013 school year: ALL-STATE MUSICIANS Kieran Harrison Matthew Iovino

Exploring The World

Woodhull Elementary School students continue to explore scientific concepts this fall as part of the district’s environmental education program. During a unit called “A Sense of Wonder,” the school’s first- and secondgrade students explored the lives of two important environmentalists, John Muir and Rachel Carson, and kept nature journals

to record their thoughts and observations on the outdoors. Their journals will be used throughout the school year to identify seasonal differences in local plants and animals. To explore animal adaptations and the effects of human activity on local environments, the students conducted a simple experiment titled “Peppered Moth Simulation,” during

which they described the importance of camouflage, related environmental change to changes in organisms, and explained how natural selection causes populations to change. In addition, the students learned about the Native American culture on Long Island by participating in a variety of traditional games and activities.

Sayville Scholar Athlete Sayville High School Senior James Giattino has been named the Capital One/News12 Long Island Scholar Athlete this month. Each month, News12, in conjunction with Capital One Bank, recognizes one student from Long Island as the Capital One/News12 Scholar Athlete. Each student athlete is recognized for his or her

exceptional achievement in the classroom and on the athletic field. The winner receives a certificate and a $1,000 scholarship from Capital One Bank. Students are recommended for this award by their head coach or school administrator. Coach Rob Hoss nominated James Giattino for this award based on his physical performance,

scholastic ability, and leadership. A true scholar who is currently taking 8 AP courses, as well as an amazing athlete in football and basketball, James maintains a weighted GPA of over 100 (unweighted, this is more than an 95 average) throughout his High School career.

Trustee Leo R. Marinick (1979) were also among the first class inducted. The colorful, and respectful, ceremony was enhanced by the contributions of the American Legion Riders & Color Guard (SmithWever Post #651 & Joseph Kovarik Post #1146). Mr. Murtha congratulated each of the inductees and their families, and encouraged the community to continue to support and respect the sacrifices made by all of our veterans, past and current. Refreshments were provided by members of the Connetquot H.S. PTA. Mr. Murtha extended his gratitude to the members of the high school PTA, the Site-Based Management Team, Hall of Honor Coordinators Tom Desmond and Ellen Perry, as well as the Hall of Honor Technicians, particularly Carol Murphy and Margaret Ferrara. Current Connetquot H.S. seniors also played a vital role in the evening’s celebration with comments by Senior Class President David F. Candito, and Courtney Moore singing the national anthem. Connetquot High School Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha and Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman (Ph.D) welcomed hundreds of community residents and honored guests to the Hall of Honor Induction on September 13th. The event was held in the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center at Connetquot H.S. in Bohemia. 60 Connetquot High School graduates who served honorably in the U.S. military services became the first group to be so honored. Their photos, and a brief caption that includes their graduation class and branch of service, now pay tribute to their service, and sacrifice. Among the first class of inductees are four veterans who were honored posthumously: Cpl Frank Todarello (class of 1966), Ltc Joseph J. Fenty, Jr (1982), Pv2 Charles P. Barcia III (1993) and Spc Matthew E. Baylis (2005) made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in U.S. Army. the school song Together, We Can Reach Our Goals.

Kindergarten Walkthrough The walkthrough program offers an opportunity for the new students and their parents to meet their teacher, visit their classroom, and make new friends. Parents would have the chance to ask questions, and lower the anxiety they might have for their youngster’s first day of school! Cherokee Street PTA officers Michelle Tantillo (President), Christina

Catera (VP) and Jenna Murphy (BOE rep) had the chance to talk to parents and answer questions about the organization. Congratulations to the Cherokee Street administration and staff on another successful kindergarten ‘welcome’, and best wishes to the students and parents for the beginning of an exciting, fun-filled, educational career!

grateful for all that the Guilds do for the hospital. We fully support their decision on how the funds are to be allocated to further deliver quality services to the community”, said The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Vice Chairperson Aileen Eppig. This most recent Guild donation will enhance emergency care with the acquisition of a Glidascope and Sonosite, video guided and ultrasound devices used by an anesthesiologist or critical care physician when caring for critically ill patients. The Guilds’ donation will also support trauma service with an EKG machine for use in the Emergency

Department. Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department sees nearly 100,000 patients yearly - the highest of any other hospital in Suffolk County. Every day, Long Island residents rely on Good Sam to treat injuries ranging from burns and broken bones to injuries sustained in car accidents or other life-threatening incidents. As a NYS Designated Level II Trauma Center, Good Samaritan has the expertise, technology and other resources to care for those in need. For more information on the Guilds and volunteer opportunities at Good Samaritan, call 631.376.4444.

Gift Keeps On Giving

Staff of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Dialysis Center in Bay Shore are using new scanners, ventilators and a patient monitoring system. What many may not know is the extraordinary woman whose generous donation made the purchase of this equipment was made possible. Helen Dodd - who died in 2007, a few months before her 105th birthday - bequeathed to Good Samaritan Hospital a generous gift of $1.6 million. The intent of her donation was that monies be used to support health care services to the medically needy. Mrs. Dodd’s niece, Bettie KINDERGARTEN WALKTHROUGH - Kindergartner Deon, & sister Kaylyn (2nd Grinnell, and nephew, grade), Burchard are welcomed by assistant principal Mrs. Pat Murthy. Photo by: Arthur Field have Joseph Maniaci provided direction as to

her charitable legacy. “I was not surprised by my aunt’s wishes to donate to Good Samaritan. She was very generous through the years to various organizations and members of her family. Helen lived life to the fullest - traveling the world while managing family funds with a keen eye for investing. She met many people less fortunate than herself in her travels, and I believe this is when she made a promise to herself to help those close to home,” said Mrs. Grinnell. “Helen was a remarkable woman for her time. She was a working, college educated and independent person during the depression. She saw first hand the devastating effects the

great depression had on her family,” said Mr. Fields. Mrs. Dodd had the insight to plan ahead to guarantee that her wishes to fund health care for our underserved community would be properly carried out. She believed in the mission of Good Samaritan Hospital and the hospital’s long-term future which is why she created a legacy gift to support it. “We are grateful to Mrs. Dodd who used her estate to benefit others for many generations to come,” said The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Executive Director Kathy Dulanto. For more information about planned giving to support hospital initiatives, please call 631.376.4365.

On Tuesday, September 4th, Cherokee Street Elementary School administration, staff, members of the PTA and students gathered for the annual Kindergarten Walkthrough! Assistant Principal Mrs. Patricial Murthy and her staff met with the incoming kindergartners and their parents for their first ‘official’ visit of the new school year.

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $82,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s Emergency Department and Critical Care Services. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2012 donations to a total of more than $222,000 for various programs, including pediatrics, the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and emergency medicine. Made up of volunteers from s u r r o u n d i n g communities, the Guilds have helped sustain the hospital for more than 50 years. “The Good Samaritan Foundation Board is very
