Members of The New York Natural Equestrians raised $7,650 for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at their 4th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit Ride held at Connequot River State Park in Bohemia, Long Island. The event organizer, Lisa Llinnares Wolf of Islip Terrace says she started the event to honor her best friend who has had breast cancer. She says, “I do it because like her, many more women will be diagnosed and need care, services, support and assistance, and I want to make sure that Adelphi is able to continue offering those things to those that need it most. I do it because my grandmother died of breast cancer, just like so many other grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends.”

human, enabling riders to ride whenever they want, wherever they want, with whomever they want, at any gait they want…safely. The organization has raised a total of $27,000 in these past four years to

benefit the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. Anyone who is worried about breast cancer should call the hotline for help at 800.877.8077. You are not alone.

More than 800 Stony Brook University students, faculty and other individuals participated in a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on November 14th to help those with leukemia or lymphoma who are in need a bone marrow transplant to beat their disease. The drive was organized by four Stony Brook University Students, who partnered with DKMS Americas, the world’s largest marrow donor center. The successful drive had been organized by students Derek Cope,

Maggie Knight, Samuel Rosner, and Peter Sheh. They developed a campuswide effort for the drive that included numerous locations for individuals to join the registry – the Student Activities Center and Campus Recreation Center on the University’ main campus; and Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, and Health Sciences tower on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. Each day 7,500 people are searching for a match on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Six out

of 10 patients in need of a bone marrow transplant never find a match. Conducting a bone marrow registry drive increases the pool of potential matches nationwide. A simple “swab” on the inside of one’s cheek is the first step to becoming a match for a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant. A total of 841 individuals – a majority of them Stony Brook University students – were swabbed during the drive.

I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I

would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure

and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

County National Bank. “The shelter does tremendous work in finding homes for abused, homeless and abandoned animals and their low cost spay/neuter clinic is vital in helping control the pet population in our community. All funds received will go towards helping the shelter continue its services. And, of course, if someone is looking to provide a loving home for a pet, we invite them to contact Kent at 631.727.5731.” The three branches that are participating are Suffolk County National Bank’s two branch offices located in Riverhead at 6 West Second Street and 1201 Ostrander Avenue as well as their Wading River branch located at 2065 Wading River Manor Road. “This is a great opportunity for customers and the community to help out in whatever

increment they choose, and know they are helping animals in need. We are so thankful for Suffolk County National Bank for choosing to be part of this campaign and all they have done for us over the years,” said Pam Green Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter. Kent is also currently looking for volunteers for their many programs at the shelter. With over 100 cats and kittens and over 25 dogs to care for, there are many areas in which Kent needs volunteers from office administration, dog walking, to photography. To find out what you may be able to do as a volunteer, contact Heidi Guamet at 631.727.5731. Celebrating Recovery On Sunday, November 18th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered for a celebration of recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc.’s (LICADD) 23rd Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This familyfocused event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, NY and recognized the personal stories of struggles with addiction, while highlighting the efforts of others who provide them with life-saving support. LICADD honored three individuals whose o u t s t a n d i n g accomplishments have shaped public policy, expanded public awareness, enhanced treatment options, and enabled Long Island to address its growing drug and alcohol problems. The honorees include Community Champion A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D. of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI); Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSW-R, CASAC, CPC, of Zucker Hillside Hospital; and Media Champion Ronald J. Scaglia of Anton Community Newspapers. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey

Reynolds described the event, “It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future.” Across Long Island, families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction. Their painful stories create the momentum needed to push life-saving legislation through our local and state governments. Media Champion Mr. Scaglia is the Editor of Special Sections for Anton Community Newspapers, and his coverage of the drug crisis on Long Island has helped raise awareness, especially among parents of teens who are at risk for substance abuse. As the CEO and CoFounder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), Community Champion Dr. McLellan has a long history of leadership in the field of substance abuse, and his research has shaped policy on each level of the public sphere. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. McLellan was the Science

Advisor and Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a congressionally confirmed Presidential appointment to help shape the nation’s public policy approach to illicit drug use. At ONDCP, Dr. McLellan worked on a broad range of drug issues, including the formulation and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy and promotion of drug treatment through the broader redesigning of the national health care system. For over thirty years, Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSWR, CASAC, CPP has advocated for and expanded the services that are available for Long Island’s chemically dependent citizens. Ms. Hincken currently serves as the Director of Addiction Recovery Services at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Having dedicated her career to studying addiction and providing treatment, she says she is “continually inspired by staff and patients, and finds the journey through addiction and recovery remarkable.”

Tree Lighting Set The Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center invites the community to join in the Annual Christmas Tree of Lights Celebration on Tuesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. The ceremony provides the opportunity to recall the need to grow stronger together in our search for peace, with the Tree of Lights representing a beacon of hope and unity in our fragmented world. The blessing and lighting of the Christmas tree will take place in front of the

hospital, followed by refreshments served in the Main Lobby. Mercy’s Christmas tree lighting is an annual fundraiser that this year will support the Sister Mary Grace Education Fund that provides scholarships for students in financial need who are studying for careers in health care. Lights can purchased for the Christmas tree in memory of a loved one, in celebration of a special event, or in honor of a special person, with

remembrances recorded in a Tree of Lights book that will be displayed in the hospital’s main lobby during the Christmas season. A special mass will be held at 12 noon in the hospital chapel on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 for all those remembered in the Tree of Lights. To purchasing a memorial light or for information about the Mass, please call the League Office at 516.705.1833.

RESPONSE Responds “You can make a difference if you listen carefully and let callers know they are not alone”the belief practiced by hotline staff of RESPONSE of Suffolk County-became all too real following Hurricane Sandy. Seeing the images of those impacted by Sandy, we are reminded of the lessons learned following 9/11; that the aftermath of traumatic events can be as painful as the initial disaster--leading to depression, PTSD and, even, thoughts of suicide. The very real loss of basic needs such as heat, shelter, communication,

and possessions is devastating, and while there is wonderful work being done by so many groups providing food, clothing, shelter and medical services, RESPONSE hotline is receiving calls from people impacted by Sandy seeking ongoing support tied to anxiety, stress, trauma, personal and economic loss. Even though we lost power during the hurricane we were able to keep our Hotline going with off-site counselor shifts and we responded to hundreds of callers; from people trying to contact other agencies who had

lost their power, to people dealing with medical crises, to those who were scared and alone in the dark and cold. RESPONSE responded, as we always do, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you or someone you know is in crisis or in need please refer them to RESPONSE Crisis Hotline of Suffolk County. 631.751.7500. All calls are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. We also offer ONLINE counseling at responsehotline.org/HEA R2HELP from 7 to 11 p.m. daily.

Mrs. Liz Berger, the Occupational Therapist (OT) at the Cherokee Street Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, spends her days teaching student’s important skills, while they are having fun! Berger is an important part of a federal mandate providing kindergarten students with a program to develop fine motor skills. As one part of the Connetquot School District’s RtL (Response to Intervention) program, OT’s provide weekly ‘fun’ lessons to improve the development of those motor skills. On Friday, October 12th, Mrs. Berger worked with kindergartners in Ms. Conrad & Mrs. Faller’s classes at Cherokee. Each class began with an

energetic rendition of the ‘hokey pokey’ which had the students up, dancing, exercising, and mirroring her lead. The smiles on the students’ faces underlined the fun they were having with the day’s lesson. Mrs. Berger then distributed worksheets with a drawing of a school bus and asked the students to color the bus yellow, and wheels black, using the markers provided. After carefully coloring inside the lines, students were asked to cut out bus, and the wheels, using safety scissors, and paste them in the appropriate places on the bus. Mrs. Berger, Ms. Conrad and Mrs. Faller encouraged, and supported, the students as

they eagerly, and proudly, completed the assignment. According to chairperson Donna M. Thompson, “… together, Mrs. Berger and the classroom teachers assist the students with their letter formation, handwriting, scissor use, hand dominance and activities of daily living. The lessons are structured to provide students with successful experiences while having fun!” Cherokee Street Elementary School kindergartners thoroughly enjoy working with Mrs. Berger, and look forward to her next ‘funfilled’ visit! The Golden Rule

Mrs. Lynne Slovin, Youth and Family Services Coordinator at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia, proudly introduced two of her Peer Leaders to Mrs. McMullen’s 3rd grade class on October 5th. Joelle Foston and Alicia Donlon, 5th grade Peer Leaders, came to talk to the youngsters about Bosti’s building theme: The Golden Rule! EJ Bosti Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne listened in as Joelle and Alica interacted with the 3rd graders to discuss that Golden Rule. Students agreed that the

Golden Rule means to be nice to one another. That being nice to other students, sisters, brothers, parents and teachers makes them feel good. They gave examples of the Golden Rule in school, and at home. They included holding the door for others, and being helpful to their siblings and classmates. One of the girls suggested making new students feel welcome by inviting them to sit at their lunch table, or to play with them during recess. Joelle and Alicia also spent time talking about

bullying, and what the students should do if they see it in, or outside of, school. Suggestions included “… telling the bully to stop, telling a teacher, …”, and just “ … standing up for a friend”. Dr. Ihne and Mrs. Slovin were very proud of Joelle Foston and Alicia Donlon. Mrs. McMullen’s students were pleased to talk to these 5th grade ‘big girls’, and promised to continue to follow the Golden Rule in class, and at home! Photo by: Joseph Maniaci

The North Shore-LIJ Health System and its research enterprise, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, have developed a program to encourage Long Island high school students in 9th and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The winning teams of the North Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Program will receive scholarship money. To participate, a letter of intent must be submitted by December 1st. Only 10.2 percent of graduates from Long Island regional colleges and universities receive STEM-related degrees. The North Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Program aims to combat a lack of opportunity for young students to get involved in STEM education by encouraging and investing in their interests related to STEM. Three teams will receive awards. The winning team will receive a $1,800 scholarship and the

winning team members will be considered for placement in the Feinstein Institute summer program. The second-place team will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the thirdplace team will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, the winning team’s faculty mentor will receive a $500 grant towards the purchase of equipment or supplies for his or her classroom. Any New York Stateaccredited educational institution in Nassau or Suffolk counties is eligible to apply. A letter of intent (LOI) must be submitted by December 1 to Cheryl Davidson at the North Shore-LIJ Center for Workforce Readiness at cdavidson@nshs.edu. The LOI should be: • signed by the appropriate building principal(s) or district administrator • submitted on institutional letterhead • and include the following three sections: • a brief history of the school district and its

programs in STEM education; • a concise description of the programs that will be leveraged for this project and how students will be selected for participation; and • identification of a designated faculty representative (including contact information) for the program at the school Each eligible institution that submits an LOI will receive detailed proposal instructions and identify at least one multidisciplinary team of students and a faculty mentor. The written proposal, which is due on February 1st, 2013, will be submitted to a panel of Feinstein Institute scientists who will select the winners. Participants will be invited to attend a celebration event where the proposals will be displayed and the winners announced. This event will take place March 1st, 2013 at the Feinstein Institute in Manhasset. For more details, please contact Cheryl Davidson at cdavidson@nshs.edu.
