leaders coordinated a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit local residents. As the school received an overwhelming amount of donations and as part of Operation Shoebox, the students not only created Thanksgiving baskets for local families but also boxes filled with food and supplies for members of their surrounding community gravely affected by Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, the students in Tammy Santora’s class also created bags of well wishes and supply items for individuals living in shelters as a result of the hurricane. The bags were filled with gift cards and a variety of personal
school in Rockaway Park, N.Y. devastated by the hurricane. JWY students collected backpacks and filled them with pencils, pens, index cards, construction paper and an assortment of other school supplies for their fellow New York students. Their effort made an even greater impact thanks to a $425 monetary collection, $100 of which was donated by the BayportBlue Point Teachers Association. Bayport-Blue Point High School staff and students also worked to ease the pain felt by the surrounding community as a result of the hurricane. During a twoday collection drive, the school was open to interested parties who wanted to drop off food, clothing or other supplies for local families affected by the superstorm. During their lunch periods, students volunteered at the drop-off site to help sort and organize the donations. Photo provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax

HOLIDAY SPECIAL
247717N1205
The holiday season is often a difficult one for those struggling, a fact that has become even more apparent this year as many Long Islanders find themselves in need of assistance due in large part to the recent hurricane. Looking to help those in the local communities as well as ones in far-reaching neighborhoods, the Bayport-Blue Point School District coordinated several relief efforts in November. From food to supply drives, district students and staff members once again demonstrated the caring nature of the schools. Academy Street Elementary School peer
hygiene items. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fifthgrade students in Ursula Camenzuli’s and Alexandra Sulton’s classes decorated pillowcases and filled the creative sacks with personal care items for Long Island Cares, an organization collecting items for Long Islanders affected by the recent storm. Blue Point Elementary School students coordinated a food drive, which called for donations of non-perishable food items for local residents in need this holiday season. James Wilson Young Middle School student council members coordinated a food drive for Our Lady of the Snow Church and the Patchogue Soup Kitchen. The students collected hundreds of nonperishable canned and boxed goods during the weeklong drive. Additionally, the school’s National Junior Honor Society coordinated a school supply drive for the Scholars’ Academy, a

Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, recently recognized a group of generous students and parents who raised money to fight Breast Cancer. Organized by Mrs. Nicole Francess, the John Pearl ‘team’ accepted pledges, and used their own allowances, to take part in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 15th. Joining a crowd of what was estimated to be 2,500 walkers, the John
Pearl group marched early in the morning at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College. According to Mrs. Denise Shannon the John Pearl team made a donation of $200 to help fight the disease, and increase Breast Cancer awareness. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s nationwide series of walking events to raise funds, and awareness, in the fight to end scourge of breast cancer. Close to 300 such ‘walks’ take place each year.
Congratulations to the following John Pearl Elementary School students and parents for their successful participation in this year’s Breast Cancer Walk: Nicole, Abby, Olivia and Madeline Francess; Denise and Paige Shannon; Louise and Giana Buchanan; Phylene and Marina Fizzuoglio; Cassandra and Courtney Catcher; Maeve Cornish. Automotive Teacher Steve Celeste said, “Our goal is to build the T-bucket in three stages. The students would learn welding skills, automotive repair, custom automotive detailing, painting, and engine building. Team work, time management, and good communication skills are also very important on this project.” Principal Tom McGrath said, “We want to give students an exciting, meaningful project that they can work on throughout the school year and complete a sleek, shiny, beautiful collector automobile. I think it would increase student confidence and spark an interest in the automotive field.”

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation. She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained
in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,
what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?” Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

SUFFOLK ZONE 4 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 5, 2012
On a frigid Sunday morning, November 25th, the Sachem Youth Advisory Group (SYAG) held it’s annual junior division ‘Super Bowl’ Championship game. Holtsville’s Oregon Ducks came into the game with a 5-2 record, to play the undefeated (7-0) Titans. The Titans dominated the first half of the game, but the mighty ‘Ducks’ came on strong in the second half. 28-12. Despite the fact that the Ducks finished the game on the short end of a 28-12 score, the coaches, parents, grandparents and friends gave the team a standing ovation. The players demonstrated tremendous intensity, pride and sportsmanship all season long. And on this very cold Super Bowl Sunday, the players showed how much of a team they could be. As thegame came to an end, the Ducks lined up proudly to shake hands with the Titans, showing respect for their opponents.

The event is planned for December 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m. “The Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization is excited to be promoting Toys for Tots across the North Shore of Long Island,” said Patricia Petersen, president and CEO of DGSIR. “As a group, we have a history of coming together to support good causes and we are particularly thrilled to support Toys for Tots, especially in light of the many Long Island families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.” Last year, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s Laura Zambratto, an associate director with the organization’s upper tier marketing program, hosted a Toys for Tots drop off during an open house at one of her listings. She decorated the home, provided refreshments and by the end of the open house had greeted more than 100 visitors including neighbors, prospective homebuyers, real estate agents and friends. “I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” she recalls. “One person brought

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) members have joined forces with members of the district’s communities to provide relief to those who have suffered at the hands of recent heavy winds, rain and coastal flooding. CTA President Mr. Tony Felicio, Jr., has called for the support of his members to provide tangible resources, as well as volunteers with construction, and demolition, skills to make themselves available. CTA members worked with members of the Connetquot High School Student Government organization to collect, sort and help distribute donated necessities throughout the district. On Saturday, November 10th the organization set up a relief support table at Connetquot High School’s football playoff game against Ward Melville HS
– which the Thunderbirds won 39 – 7! The volunteers collected seven pallets of food items which were then distributed to members of the community. Felicio was proud of the “… great outpouring of support from our community, to our community. The CTA is proud to be a part of such a supportive community effort. Connetquot teachers stand ready to help get the families of our community through the tough days ahead of them.” Connetquot teachers joined other district volunteers, including school PTA’s, in providing assistance throughout the area, especially the hardest-hit community of Idle Hour, in Oakdale. On Wednesday, November 14th, CTA members volunteered to serve dinner, and help
Recovery Support
distribute supplies, at the Idle Hour Elementary School. On Thursday, November 15th, Connetquot teachers volunteered to help serve dinners to residents of the district, which was provided by the Applebee’s Restaurant chain, and held at the OakdaleBohemia Middle School. Felicio went on to say that “We all need to remember that as most of us begin to regain normalcy in our lives, so many in our community have been displaced, or have suffered significant damage to their homes. We need to remember that normalcy for those families remains weeks, perhaps months, away. There continues to be much work for us to do to help them.” Anyone who would like to join with the CTA in this effort can contact Mr. Felicio at 631.676.3061
For the weeks that followed the devastation of Hurricane Sandy Connetquot teachers volunteered to help members of the community through the heartache and recovery. Currently, there are 20 Connetquot families that have been displaced as a result of the damage to their homes and property, particularly in the Idle Hour area of Oakdale. Members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) have stepped up to work with student groups, community PTA’s and other volunteer agencies to provide physical, emotional and financial support for the families affected. On Tuesday, November 20th, more than two
dozen teachers volunteered to join members of the high school Student Government Club, and other volunteers, to serve Thanksgiving dinner, at the high school, to district residents. CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., said that “Connetquot Teachers were proud to work alongside our high school students by serving dinner to members of the community affected by the hurricane. I would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help with this event, especially club advisors Sal and Jenn Piscatelli. I hope that we have helped those families adversely affected by the recent storms, and that they will have brighter days ahead.” Most recently,
Connetquot teachers have volunteered to collect, sort and distribute needed supplies of clothing, food and water. Teachers, many of whom live in the Connetquot School District, also used their demolition, and construction, skills in helping neighbors recover from the damage of recent storms. Felicio again encourages community residents affected by the storms to contact the CTA office at 631.676.3061 for a Relief Committee application. Just days after the hurricane struck the area, the CTA created a $15,000 emergency fund to provide support for community residents. Photo by: Joseph Maniaci

Ride To Remember Just before the holiday break, the winners of this year’s fire safety poster contest at Blue Point Elementary School, which was sponsored by the Blue Point Fire Department, received a ride home from school to remember - a
ride aboard one of the department’s fire trucks. The winners, three from each grade, were selected based on the artistic drawings they created urging their peers to take care when it comes to a fire and the tips to
remember in order to remain safe. Congratulations to this year’s winners and special thanks to their art teachers, Bev Maler and Carly Gayler, for helping them create their winning entries

Spelling Bee Champ After countless hours of preparation, James Wilson Young Middle School students took to the auditorium stage in late November to participate in this year’s semifinal round of the school spelling bee. Before their cheering classmates, the class winners, representing their homerooms,
competed against peers in their grade levels during the schoolwide assembly. Sixth-grader Lillian Horne, seventh-grader Adoni Karpathakis and eighth-grader Peter Drago were named the champion spellers of their grade levels after correctly spelling “primitive,” “gargoyle” and “dormition,” respectively.
Going head-to-head, the three students competed for the ultimate title of schoolwide spelling champion. With the correct spelling of “tentacle,” Adoni was named the 2012 champion and will now advance to the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee in February.
