Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars‌ Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things

will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidaysâ€? doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normalâ€? routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all‌ see you on the flip side.

and Christina Perez. The Make-A-Wish holiday party took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holkbrook. The children were very excited to see the dancers perform and seemed to enjoy the minishow with much enthusiasm. The kids were eager to meet and take pictures with the Dance Connection dancers after they performed. The Make-A-Wish administrators at the Suffolk County chapter were extremely appreciative. “I received so many compliments on you all from our staff, volunteers and families! They all were truly impressed, thank you for taking your time to share your talents with the many special families at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. We hope to have you back next year!” said Melissa Wilko, Director of Operations at Make-AWish Foundation of Suffolk County. After the event, the dancers all met back at the studio to drop off their costumes and reflect on the performance. By the end of this season, some will have danced in four countries, nine U.S. states, in Disney World, and aboard international cruise ships. However, this holiday season, they received a unique and very humbling performance invitation. On Saturday, December 15th, Dance Connection dancers performed at the annual Make-A-Wish holiday party. The MakeA-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Their annual holiday party hosted many of the children and families who are cared for by Make-AWish. This past October, a representative from the Suffolk County chapter of Make-A-Wish contacted Dance Connection asking if they could put together a special holiday piece for the party. Artistic Director Mary Naftal was happy to work on a piece and immediately put together a group of dancers and team of teachers, including Jenn D’Auria, Donna Iaboni,

Stony Brook Awarded Grant

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Stony Brook University School of Nursing (SON) has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) which will be used to fund scholarships designed to expand enrollment to help address the nationwide nursing shortage and increase the diversity of nursing professionals. The grant will be matched by the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant for a total impact of $200,000. The RWJF’s “New Careers in Nursing Program” grant enables the SON to provide ten $10,000 individual scholarships in 2013 to college graduates without nursing degrees who will enroll in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program next June. The $100,000 Simons match will support the academic progression of three RWJF scholars enrolled in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. These scholarships are in support of a RWJF initiative, in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine, which places a premium on advancing the level of education for nurses nationwide to accompany the need for more nurses. The goal is for schools of nursing to build their resources to prepare more students at the graduate level for professional roles in advanced practices, leadership, teaching, and research. “These scholarships make it possible for promising new students to enter the profession, advance their education, and facilitate the rapid entry of new nurses into the workforce,” said Lori Escallier, PhD, RN, CPNP, Associate Dean for Evaluation and Outcomes and Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing. “The support we are receiving from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Simons Foundation will also help us further grow nursing research and higher education

within our program.” “With the additional support from the Simons Foundation, the top performers in the RWJF scholars program will have an opportunity to move quickly to develop the most advanced nursing skills and become

well-prepared to train and educate other nurses in best practices,” said Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos, Dean, of the School of Nursing. “There is a shortage of both nurse practitioners and nurse educators, and promoting seamless academic progression in nursing is a step toward alleviating these shortcomings in clinical and academic settings.” Dr. Xippolitos added that scholarships like those supported by the Simons Foundation will serve as a pipeline to growing Stony Brook’s DNP Program. She explained that students moving quickly from the

Accelerated Baccalaureate Program to the DNP Program will also have clinical practice opportunities at Stony Brook University Hospital. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by the year 2016. The Bureau also estimates that employment for registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. In addition to increasing nurse numbers, the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, policy advisors to Congress, agrees that diversifying the nursing profession is essential to meeting the health care needs of the nation. “While the number of underrepresented nurses has increased, the current amount is still inadequate to meet the needs of underrepresented populations on Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area,” said Dr. Escallier. “Studies indicate that patients respond better when care instructions are delivered in their own language and their cultural background is taken into account. For these reasons, we will continue to increase our support of underrepresented students within the School of Nursing.” As a result of previous RWJF grants, the SON’s Accelerated Baccalaureate Program has graduated 23 RWJF scholars. One of the stipulations of the RWJF grant is that enrollment increases. Currently, 62 students are enrolled in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program. The SON expects to continue increasing enrollment for the program. Thirty-two students are enrolled in the DNP Program.

Funds Raised For Sandy Victims During this yuletide season of giving, we in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) especially acknowledge our leagues and clubs plus companies we work with that went beyond the proverbial extra mile to provide Hurricane Sandy relief. SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs made a $10,000 donation to the ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) each received $3,333. “We are a national company but New York State is our home and even members of our own families have been affected by Hurricane Sandy,” commented SportsSignup CEO Anthony Bruno. “We wanted to give to these

organizations to help them get back on their feet.” The LIJSL held a food drive on November 10th and 11th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview and the LIJSL office in Ronkonkoma. 4,134 lbs. of food, personal care items and homecleaning supplies, as well as a van full of coats and blankets, were donated by Long Island soccer families. Hauppauge Soccer Club coach Joe Grippo organized a fundraiser on November 18 that raised $15,000 in donations and over 9,000 lbs. in nonperishable items for the American Red Cross and Island Harvest. “He put the event together in six days,” said Hauppauge Soccer Club President Pedro Contreras. “Although there were many others in our club who assisted, it was his

and East Islip also made a $2,500 donation to the EJ Autism Foundation. The Auburndale Soccer Club in Queens collected money for a local family affected by the hurricane. The family has a child that plays for Auburndale, and once they heard that they lost their home and personal belongings, they started a collection at the club’s annual dinner dance. Over $1,100 was raised that night, which was matched by the club. Then a group of five coaches made additional donations to bring the total to $5,000. Auburndale was also able to set up a pick-up location through the club and shipped three truckloads of clothes and food to Staten Island. Breakaway, a training organization that works with SIYSL clubs, hosted a charity indoor soccer tournament, “Staten Island Soccer Over Sandy.” The tourney was held at the Victory Sports Arena on Veteran’s Day and raised $5,000 for the Staten Island families most affected, including

the Dresch family, which lost father George and 13year-old daughter Angela. Clubs that participated were Notre Dame Academy, Richmondtown, St. John Newman, Silver Lake and Staten Island United. SIYSL club Our Lady Help of Christians hosted 65 teams on December 8th in OLHC’s Playing for Angels tourney. This indoor/outdoor tournament was played at IS34, Angela Dresch’s school. $10,000 was raised for Dresch Family Funds and OLHC Hurricane Relief. Every player received a bracelet and tournament T-shirt in purple, which was Angela’s favorite color.

She drove out again the next day with donations, and they have also helped arrange a truck from Virginia to come with more supplies.” The Deer Park Soccer Club held a collection drive on Sunday, November 9th at their intramural fields. The donations of food, clothing and household goods were incredible. Through a church in Deer Park, they were able to get the donations to the town of Lindenhurst to distribute to people in need. They also collected $533 which is being donated to the Red Cross. The Bay Shore Soccer Club had a food and coat drive to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims and adopted several local families for Thanksgiving. The East Islip Soccer Club, assisted by the neighboring West Islip Soccer Club, hosted nearly 70 intramural and travel teams on November 18th and 19th in their “Soccer Over Sandy” tournament. $28,000 was raised for Hurricane Sandy relief

Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank received a $50,000 contribution to help address Long Island’s emergency food needs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The grant – which was given to the regional food bank through the Walmart Foundation’s NY State Giving Program – will provide much needed food and supplies for the many families devastated by the horrendous storm that ravaged Long Island. Robin Amato, Long Island Cares Director of Development and Communications, was grateful for the financial support. "We are so thankful for the financial help Walmart is providing, which will allow us to make the food purchases

necessary to feed our Long Island neighbors in need of assistance," she said. "This grant from Walmart comes at a critical time when our local communities hurt by Sandy are calling on us for help.” “Walmart has a number of stores and associates across Long Island, and we are deeply concerned by the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused. We are grateful for the opportunity to help great programs like Long Island Cares in this time of need,” said Phil Serghini, Walmart Director of Community Affairs. “Through this grant and others, we are committed to helping the communities we serve recover and rebuild in the

Throughout the month of December, district students and staff members engaged in a wide range of community service activities and collection drives. As a result of their collective generosity and warm hearts, this holiday season will be made a little brighter for many Long Island families. At Academy Street Elementary School, the peer leaders put their creativity to the test and fashioned original handmade holiday cards for the senior citizens living at a local facility in East Islip. During their early morning meeting, the students wrote messages of hope and holiday wishes in their colorfully decorated cards. As part of a Giving Tree program, Blue Point Elementary School students and staff members selected paper ornaments listing a person’s age, gender and a wished-for item and helped to grant those individuals’ wishes this holiday. Additionally, continuing with their work to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy, the students participated in a Kids Helping Kids program. Students donated items such as hats, gloves and health supplies that began with the first letter of their

last name, to this worthy cause. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students once again participated in The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. Through the program, the students donated new sets of pajamas to which Scholastic Book Club matched each pair with a book and donated the set to the Pajama Program National Headquarters. The pajamas and books were then distributed by the program to children in need throughout the country. Additionally, as part of Operation Sandy Clause, Sylvan Avenue students created holiday stockings for families who are recovering from Hurricane Sandy. The completed stockings included a wide range of toiletry items. James Wilson Young Middle School students in Bob Donarummo’s Introduction to Technology class, used hand and electric tools to construct approximately 90 7-inch tall wooden teddy bears for the Lighthouse Mission, a mission facility in Patchogue that helps to feed the hungry and help the homeless. The project, which was coordinated as part of the class’s Mass Production of Goods unit of study, helped to

reinforce the lessons the students were learning about the production process. Bayport-Blue Point High School’s student council organized a schoolwide holiday drive for the individuals at John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility in Yaphank. Soliciting donations off the residents’ wish lists as well as gift cards, the student council collected and sorted the large number of donations before delivering the packages to the residents just before the holiday break.

The CTA effort will help the church continue its generous work in the community. Mr. Felico thanked the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association for their generous support of this year’s holiday drive, as well as Sister Lisa Bergeron, who is the coordinator of St. John’s Social Ministry. He also singled out CTA co-

gifts they would have enjoyed as a child. The Marine Corps mission for Toys for Tots is to unite all members of local communities in a common cause by contributing to a muchneeded project, ensuring all children have a gift to open.

On November 14th, Holbrook resident and New York City Police Officer Lawrence DePrimo purchased insulated winter boots and thermal socks for an unidentified, shoeless man on the sidewalk of Seventh Avenue near forty-fourth street in Manhattan. Officer DePrimo was unaware that his actions were being filmed and would later become known to the entire world through social media by a tourist from Arizona. Officer DePrimo was

AROMA OF EVERGREENS - Visitors to the Islip Career Center (ICC) could smell the aroma of fresh greens and pinecones in the hallways. Students in Mark Haven’s Eastern Suffolk BOCES horticulture class were busy filling special orders of arrangements for the holidays that included door wreaths, table centerpieces, crosses for gravesites, and a wishing well to be auctioned for victims of Superstorm Sandy. recently honored at the Salvation Army Greater New York Division’s Annual Gala in Manhattan. A proclamation was presented by Salvation Army Board Member William Lindsay III on behalf of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer, William J. Lindsay. “Honoring Officer DePrimo at this event was meaningful and appropriate because he carries out the Salvation Army’s mission of

supporting homeless and needy families during the holidays and throughout the year,” said Presiding Officer Lindsay. “Officer DePrimo is kind, generous and extremely professional. He embodies the true definition of a humanitarian, and he went above and beyond the call of duty. Officer DePrimo’s actions help us to portray our country as a civilized society in a very troubled world, and he has made the Holbrook community and the United States very proud.”

Joy And Happiness

Students in Chef Mike Frankson’s Introduction to Cooking class at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale spent the last two weeks baking hundreds of cookies. The delectable creations include linzer tarts, biscotti, sugar, chocolate crinkles, chocolate chip, peanut butter, ginger snaps, oatmeal raison, and almond cookies.

Baking the cookies was just the first step. The second step was to instruct the students how to create cookie trays. The criterion for each cookie tray was that it weighed two pounds, that the cookies were stacked and visibly appealing, and that the tray was secured properly with cellphone and ribbon. The most rewarding

aspect of this project was that the cookie trays were being gifted to less fortunate students and their families at the Islip Career Center. Each student in Chef Frankson’s class was permitted to make a cookie tray to bring home to their family to enjoy. Happy Holidays!

introduced Peter Leis, who is the organization’s President-elect. Leis encouraged members to submit applications for CRTA scholarships for children, or grandchildren, graduating high school in the spring and headed for college. Scholarships will be presented at the May, 2013 luncheon. Joan Perrini, President of the RC21 organization which represents 11 Suffolk County school districts addressed member concerns regarding the Relief Fund, Teacher Evaluations and the effects of the 2% tax cap. Perrini encouraged anyone affected by Hurricane Sandy to apply for financial assistance. The organization’s

Insurance Ombundsman, Richard Thomas, answered members questions about changes in the retiree’s insurance plans, and increased costs. After the business news was completed it was time for the members to continue sharing photos of grandchildren, and reminiscing about the students, and classrooms, they continue to remember, and miss. The CRTA meets twice per school year and continues to support such organizations as Make A Wish, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society as well as local food pantries. CRTA officers and members wish everyone a Happy, Safe and Healthy Holiday, and New Year!

Commission Relocates The Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission office and staff have moved from Great River to new facilities in Westhampton Beach. The Commission office is now located in the Suffolk County Water Authority’s Eastern Regional Office situated just south of Sunrise Highway on the east side of Old Riverhead Road and just north of Gabreski Airport. “The new location allows us to establish a physical presence in the Central Pine Barrens for the very first time, improves efficiencies by reducing response times to locations within the

Central Pine Barrens region and allows us to obtain greater awareness of conditions and activities occurring in our jurisdictional area,” said John W. Pavacic, Executive Director of the Commission. Pavacic said the new space also places Commission staff in the same contiguous site for the first time, allowing for improved coordination, communication and cohesiveness. In addition, he noted that the superior configuration of the new Commission office plus its increased space will enhance office functioning. “We are grateful to the

Suffolk County Water Authority for recognizing our office space needs and for renovating and providing this new work location,” Pavacic said. The Commission’s new address, which is the same as its mailing address, is: 624 Old Riverhead Road (County Road 31) Westhampton Beach 11978 The Commission office also has new general phone numbers which are: 631.288.1079 main phone number 631.288.1367 – fax All other phone numbers, including staff numbers, remain the same as before.

the walking routes where most gang recruitment, bullying and other harmful incidents are noted to be prevalent. Adult volunteers are needed to work as part of a watchful, mobile team that provides a calming presence and a deterrent to incidents that might

cause students to skip or drop out of school. Volunteers will have the capacity to communicate with each other and serve as the “eyes and ears” for the police if active intervention is required. Volunteers will be required to attend training, pass a

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM LAMBROS HOME DESIGN

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted.
