n a true expression of how Americans pull together in times of disaster and heartache, the Sandy Super Storm has brought together people and resources from across the region, and the nation, to help those in need. One prime example is the community of Scarborough, Maine, and how Holly Lancaster, her children and friends raised over $1,200, to purchase gift cards for affected residents of the Connetquot School District! Mrs. Lancaster coordinated her community’s efforts with Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Student Council Advisor Mrs. Christine Valente. New Beginnings Welcomed

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, welcomed Allyson Scerri, Founder and CEO and Kate DiMeglio, Vice-President of New Beginnings Community Center, a notfor-profit center founded in 2011 by Ms. Scerri after caring for her father who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in

2007. Ms. DiMeglio cares for an adult child with a brain injury. With a core mission of Hope, Healing and Understanding, New Beginnings provides comprehensive out-patient rehabilitation services for those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), physical and cognitive disabilities and dementia. The center also

serves many veterans who are suffering from TBI and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio addressed the committee and discussed plans to open an in-patient rehabilitation facility in Riverhead, “Brendan House” named in honor of Brendan Aykroyd, who died as a result of TBI suffered in an assault. The home

will allow TBI victims to live independently while receiving needed care, counseling and support. They hope to also open a facility in Western Suffolk to provide these services. “I am proud to welcome Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio

to the Legislature,” Legislator Stern said. “Their remarkable accomplishment in opening New Beginnings is truly an inspiration. Brendan House will provide a higher level of service to our veterans and

others suffering from TBI and PTSD. Their incredible dedication and ability to transform personal tragedy into such an outstanding facility brings pride and hope to the entire Suffolk County community.”

sportsmen and women to assist in the management of our whitetail deer resource, it is important that hunters do so lawfully and safely,” ECO Captain Timothy Huss said. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public

and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. For additional information on deer hunting opportunities on Long Island, visit the DEC website at http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/40409. html. Deer hunting regulations can be found by visiting the following page: http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html.

January 7th, 2013 marks opening day for the special January shotgun season for deer hunting in Suffolk County, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminded sportsmen and women today. Hunting areas have been expanded to include all of Suffolk County for the 2013 shotgun season to help manage an expanding deer population. January shotgun season runs from January 7th through January 31st, 2013, weekdays only. There is no deer hunting allowed on weekends during this special season in Suffolk County. In response to the upcoming expanded deer season, DEC’s E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officers (ECOs) will step up patrols to assure compliance with the regulations. “While we support the opportunities for our local

Top Value College

Stony Brook University was named the 22nd best value in public colleges and universities for instate students and the 9th best value for out-of-state students for combining “outstanding education with economic value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its top 100 rankings of public fouryear institutions. Last year, Kiplinger ranked Stony Brook as the 35th best value for in-state and 29th for out-of-state. The rankings are posted on the Kiplinger website and will

appear in the February 2013 issue of Kiplinger. According to Kiplinger, Stony Brook is one of the most selective schools on the list with an admission rate of 39 percent. It is also one of only three in Kiplinger’s top 25 best values to charge an outof-state sticker price of less than $30,000 (after need-based aid, the cost for out-of-state students is $22,543). Kiplinger’s assesses quality and affordability according to a number of measurable standards

including competitiveness, graduation rates, academic support, student indebtedness at graduation, cost and financial aid. “It’s always gratifying to be recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as a best value in public education,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Stony Brook prides itself on delivering the best education at the most affordable price, which is especially important in

these difficult economic times. This affordability, together with academic excellence, continues to enhance the value of a Stony Brook degree.” Stony Brook University was also highlighted for its course offerings, 68 majors and 78 minors across 200 academic programs; 98 percent of faculty members possessing either doctoral degrees or the highest degrees in their respective fields; faculty being responsible for more than 1,700 inventions and more than 500 patents; and a 92

percent retention rate for freshman staying on for their sophomore year. “We applaud this year’s top 100 schools for their efforts to maintain academic standards while meeting the financial needs of their students,” said Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Click here for more in-depth Kiplinger rankings with sortable data by criteria such as state, tuition cost, average debt, student-to-faculty ratio, admission rate and more. The ranking of Stony

Brook University as the 22nd best value public college and university for in-state students and ninth for out-of-state students in the nation is the latest in outstanding rankings conferred upon the university by independent organizations, including recent recognition by the U.S. News & World Report as being among the top 100 national universities and the top 40 public universities for 2013.

A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established

a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its

needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster Relief Fund Program of

$125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA and US Youth Soccer.

Contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020 for more information. The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good

works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333.

The Learning Curve By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

SPECIALIZING IN STORM DAMAGE

Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of

plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall

well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. Donald P. Dailey, Jr. AME is Suffolk County’s largest independent labor union, representing more than 8,000 active and retired members. “AME was pleased to work with our membership in collecting toys and food for families in need this holiday season. The working men and women

of AME clearly understand the struggles that are being faced by many families this year who have been hard hit, not only by the economy but by recent Superstorm Sandy. Together with Colonial Youth we were able to help dozens of families throughout Brookhaven.”

Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative Pre-school, welcomed excited parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters to the 2012 Thanksgiving Feast! Students proudly marched into the classroom where their family members had been patiently waiting … and trying to fit into their tiny desk seats! Dressed

as Native Americans and Pilgrims, the students would sing several animated holiday songs before joining their families for fabulous home-made pies! Proud family members snapped away with their cameras as their excited youngsters put on their Thanksgiving show! After the performance, students joined their families for the annual Thanksgiving

Practical Nursing student Carmen Quick gave a guest lecture to her class at the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing at Kennedy Hall NYIT campus, along with her seeing eye dog in training. She provided information on the qualifications necessary to become a trainer/instructor and spoke about transitioning seeing eye dogs. Passionate volunteers provide loving homes that care for Guide Dog Foundation puppies until the dogs are old enough to enter training programs. Puppy raisers take home a

7-week-old puppy and care for it until it is between 12 and 14 months old. They housebreak the puppy, socialize it in different environments, teach it good house manners, and provide it with the loving attention it needs. When the dog is about a year old, the family returns the dog to the foundation so it can move ahead with its new life-changing career as a guide/service dog for someone with disabilities. A 25-day in-residence training program teaches students the skills and commands needed to foster a successful working

team, reports ESBOCES Coordinator for Health Programs Marie Stevens. Upon completion of the training, the newly created human and guide dog team returns home to start their new life together. They will have begun to master all of the techniques needed to be successful—from finding the checkout counter at a store, to maneuvering through a crowded train station, to passing through a revolving door. “Together, the working team is a partnership for someone’s independence,” added Ms. Stevens.

Legislator Rob Calarco announced today plans to host a set of five town hallstyle meetings throughout the 7th Legislative District over the next six months. The meetings will include a short PowerPoint presentation highlighting the major activities of the County Legislature during 2012; however the primary focus of the forums will be to engage residents in a discussion of communityspecific issues. “The Community Forums are designed to give folks an opportunity to hear a little bit about what has been going on in the County, but more importantly – it’s a chance for us to get together and discuss issues going on in each individual community. What’s important to the people living in Medford may be different than what matters to Patchogue residents – it’s about having a conversation to

see what local government can do to improve our communities,” said Legislator Calarco. Other local elected officials are invited to the Legislator’s Community Forums as well. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Town Councilman Tim Mazzei and Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert are confirmed to attend the inaugural meeting, the Medford Community Forum set for January 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Medford Fire House. In addition to the Medford meeting, between January and June Legislator Calarco intends to host Community Forums in East Patchogue, North Patchogue, Patchogue Village, and Gordon Heights. Specific dates will be announced as they are set. “Too often you have every single elected official hosting his

own roundtables and community meetings, rather than trying to combine efforts to make things easier for taxpayers. I am serious about using government to solve community problems and enrich our neighborhoods, which is why it makes sense to bring other elected officials – regardless of their party affiliations – to the table. I want the people who attend the Community Forums to get as much useful information as possible and bringing other elected representatives to the meetings will help achieve that goal,” Legislator Calarco stated. The first Community Forum is scheduled for January 23rd, 2013. It will start at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the Medford fire House located at 71 Oregon Avenue. For more information, please call Legislator Calarco’s office at 631.854.1400.

Generous Donation throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November. “The money LIHP received will greatly benefit low income families living

on Long Island impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to provide repairs from water damages, including heating system repairs, remediation of mold, sheetrock replacement and paint,” says Kevin Law, Chairman of LIHP. The Robin Hood

Relief Fund is providing assistance to organizations throughout New York City and, for the first time, New Jersey, and Long Island. “LIHP is pleased to be working with Robin Hood here on Long Island,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “We appreciate

their support to help families impacted by Sandy get back into their homes.” Perserverance In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perseverance. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Connetquot families that have been displaced as a result of the damage caused by this terrible superstorm. The RMS family, including many extracurricular clubs, presented the YFS (Youth & Family Services) coordinator at the Idle Hour Elementary School with a check for $2,500 to help families in need.” Mrs. Valente also presented a box, shipped by Mrs. Lancaster, which included $1,200 in gift cards to be used at Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowes stores! Holly Lancaster is the sister of Ronkonkoma Middle School teacher Heidi Edmonds. Lancaster contacted her sister asking how her family could help. As a result Holly organized the fund raiser at a local (Scarborough, ME) Citgo station. She promoted the event using Facebook, collected $1,200, and

continues to collect money, toys and clothing to be sent after the Thanksgiving weekend. RMS Principal Mr. Charles D. Morea has expressed his gratitude to the entire Ronkonkoma community for its Sandy Relief efforts, but singled out Holly Lancaster, Heidi Edmonds and Mrs. Valente for their generous dedication. Mrs. Edmonds is certainly grateful to her sister and friends, but also singled out her nephews David and Drew who helped their mom Holly with her generous effort to help the Connetquot residents that have suffered at the hands of hurricane Sandy. A sincere Connetquot ‘Thank You’ to all who have participated in the many ‘Sandy Hurricane Relief’ programs. And a very ‘long distance’ thank you to our new friends in Scarborough, Maine!

5 Boro Bike Tour Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013. The Tour will be returning to a “rush” firstcthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments. Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity -- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.” 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, first-serve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour. TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, will once again serve as title sponsor. “TD Bank is proud to continue sponsoring the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the marquee cycling event in New York,” said Chris Giamo, Regional President, TD Bank. “We feel it is important to invest in our communities, and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a fun, environmentally friendly way to see the City while experiencing the TD Bank brand.” Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Adults must register themselves individually. Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration. All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out. Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient

locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks. “Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Prospective riders can also “Ride for a Reason” and champion one of Bike New York’s 43 charity partners. “Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.1 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Based on last year’s fundraising accomplishment, we’re excited to see this year’s results from our charity partners. Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life.” Below is a full list of Bike New York’s charity partners: · Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter · American Liver Foundation · ASPCA · Big Brothers Big Sisters · Broadway Green Alliance · BronxWorks · Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation · CancerCare · Community Access · Cystic Fibrosis Foundation · dance4life · Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) · First Descents · Gilda’s Club New York City · Haiti Hydroelectric, Rotary Club Metro NYC · Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation · Hope for the Warriors

Relief Fund Donation In the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, American Roland Food Corp. has donated 620 cases (approximately 22,000 servings) of canned tropical fruit to Long Island Cares (The Harry Chapin Food Bank). Many of Roland Foods’ employees and partners in the Metro New York area were hit hard by the storm and this donation, in addition to a previous donation to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey immediately

after the storm, is part of an effort to give back to the communities that support Roland branded products all year long and to aid in the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. American Roland Food Corp. is dedicated to providing support to those affected by the damage. American Roland Food Corp. supports a variety of charitable organizations throughout the year, including many hunger relief organizations and

events, but in light of the millions of Metro New York residents who lost power and the billions of dollars of damages, Roland Foods hopes this donation will serve as a small token of support in this time of devastation. “The hurricane is not making much news anymore,” said Lisa Kartzman, Director, Public Relations, “but Roland Foods has not forgotten the communities devastated and still in need of food

especially during the holiday season.” Long Island Cares provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 communitybased member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veteran’s services and more. The organization was founded by the late singer, songwriter, and social activist Harry Chapin, and

provides many programs and services in addition to the food bank. American Roland Food Corp. is a Manhattanbased food import company, specializing in high quality specialty products. For 79 years, Roland Foods has provided customers with exceptional specialty food. Their dedication to providing quality and consistency has made them a leader among food importers and suppliers. The Roland brand is

synonymous with quality for the consumer and chef alike.
