Show Goes On

Delayed originally due to Superstorm Sandy and on the cusp of Snowstorm Nemo, the Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. decided that the “show must go on” for their annual Champions of Children event at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on February 8th.

Dr. Martin R. Cantor, CPA, keynoted the

program in which the Care Council of Suffolk honored two Long Island leaders – John Kominicki, president and publisher of Long Island Business News, and Sister Mary Hughes OP of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville. Close to 140 adventurous and dedicated supporters attended the event as the rain changed to snow in what became an historic Long Island

blizzard.

The luncheon attendees also were treated to an inspiring musical performance – Broadway That Brings You Back To Your Childhood – presented by Broadway stars who are affiliated with the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport.

On February 1st, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) held its fourth annual fundraising breakfast at Farmingdale State College’s Knapp Hall to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The theme of this year’s breakfast was Super Bowl of Smarts.

The scholarship, named after the late founder of SBPLI, is made possible for up to four years, with

an amount of $1,000 per semester. Among the requirements for students to become eligible are enrollment in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island robotics program while in high school for at least two years; a combined SAT score of 1100 or better; and enrollment in Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs in Mathematics,

Engineering Technology, Computer Systems or related fields of study.

All scholarship applications are due by March 1st. The winning recipient will be named at the 14th annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, which will take place on April 4th-6th at Hofstra University.

According to data collected by the New York State Office for the Aging, social model adult day programs suppot cognitive, physical and social functioning, resulting in delayed nursing home placement often for 24 months or more.

With the grant support, Day Haven will expand the square footage of program space. The new space will provide an additional program room, a handicapped accessible bathroom with shower and hair salon capacity, and a caregiver support conference room where families can meet with Day Haven staff.

Day Haven Adult Day Services, with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides day time care, professional supervision, and assistance with activities of daily living for frail older adults and individuals with dementia who are living at

Day Haven Adult Day Services, a program of The Community Program Centers of Long Island, will expand its services in Ronkonkoma for frail older adults, individuals with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, and family caregivers. The expansion is supported by a recent $20,000 grant from the Knapp Swezey Foundation and a $5,000 grant from The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Day Haven’s Director, Elizabeth A. Geary, states, “There is documented need for more social model adult day programs serving the increasing number of frail elders and those with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.” Social model programs are recognized as a cost-effective model of care for older adults requiring supervision and assistance with activities of daily living as a result of a physical or cognitive deficit such as dementia.

PUTTING THE FUN BACK - A Zumbathon is a great way to put “fun� back into fundraising. Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center (MLC) held a Zumbathon to raise funds but, most importantly to raise awareness about autism. The event drew more than 50 people and the gymnasium was transformed into an exhilarating group exercise class. With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplantrelated expenses.

In Holbrook, volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of transplant patients like local girl, Katie Patton.

Katie is the daughter of Ryan and Lori Patton.

Born on April 20, 2009, Katie was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia. The doctors at Cohen Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, New

York, have recommended a life-saving bone marrow transplant. An estimated $60,000 is being raised by Holbrook volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities that will help with transplant-related expenses.

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals For Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower).

Fourteen scouts from Boy Scout Troop 343 in Hauppauge worked on the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge over the past month. At a recent Friday night troop meeting, scouts had the opportunity to experience what it may be like to be a person with visual or auditory impairments.

Scouts were blindfolded and asked to negotiate around four construction cones with canes. They also were asked to throw basketballs at baskets with one arm tied behind their back. Lastly, they participated in a game of Simon Says while wearing earplugs. The boys reported that these simulations enhanced their empathy toward individuals who live their lives with physical and emotional disabilities.

In order to earn the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the scouts had to make a commitment to the counselor to show

After doing more research and discussions within their troop meetings and with the merit badge counselor, the scouts visited the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown, where they learned about the many ways that guide dogs assist individuals and the process of training future guide dogs. The scouts and parents met two dogs in training and toured the Guide Dog Foundation’s kennel and training arena, learning the import role of Puppy Walkers (people who keep and socialize the dogs for the first year) and how to act around a working dog (ie, don’t pet the dog as he is the “eyes” of the person he is assisting).

As a thank you for what the Guide Dog Foundation does for the sight-impaired

community and for the tour of their training facility, Boy Scout Troop 343 members presented the Guide Dog Foundation with donations selected from the Guide Dog Foundation’s suggested donation list, such as dog toys, towels, disinfectant cloths and jars of peanut butter.

To complete the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, the Troop 343 scouts met with their Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge Counselor and scout parent, Dr Pamela Linden, at the Hauppauge Library to learn about the importance of using person-first language, career opportunities for people who are interested in assisting people with disabilities, as well as making accommodations for people with disabilities in public places and the types of adaptive sports for people with disabilities.

University Challenge With less than two weeks remaining, Alan Alda and the Stony Brook University Center for Communicating Science (CCS) are challenging scientists to explore a fundamental question asked by 11 yearolds: What is time?

Scientists have until midnight (EST) March 1st to submit written, graphic or video entries that discuss the nature of time in ways that would interest and enlighten an 11-year-old. About 20,000 schoolchildren from around the world already are signed up to judge the entries. The winners will get a trip to New York City, where they will be honored at the World Science Festival on June 2nd. Details, rules and the entry form can be found at www.FlameChallenge.org.

Actor and science advocate Alan Alda, a founding member of the Center for Communicating Science, noted that the question “What is time?” is a deep one. “I hope that what the scientists do is not take this as a challenge to explain the inexplicable, but to explore the mysterious,” Alda said.

The Flame contest began last spring with Alda’s own childhood query: What is a flame? This year, the contest collected hundreds of questions from current 11-year-olds. Several asked

“what is time?” or related questions, such as: How would you make a time machine? Why can’t you go back in time? Why does everyone age? How can you tell what time it is without looking at a clock?

How many dimensions are there? How did time begin?

“We don’t expect you to have the definitive answer,” said Elizabeth Bass, CCS director. “We would like entries to explore the nature of time from any scientific perspective – from physics to psychology, chemistry to computer science. Speculation is fine, as long as it’s clear you’re speculating. If you can intrigue kids, teach them something, and make them want to know more about the nature of time, that’s terrific.”

Last year, in the first year of the Flame Challenge, scientists around the world submitted hundreds of answers. The winning entry, a cartoon video with an original song, was created by Ben Ames, a physics doctoral student at the University of Innsbruck. The annual Flame Challenge contest is part of the Center for Communicating Science’s

mission of helping scientists communicate more effectively with the public. Located in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, the Center gives innovative Communicating Science courses for graduate students in the sciences, and conducts workshops around the country. Alan Alda is a founding member of the Center and a Visiting Professor in the School of Journalism.

The Flame Challenge is being generously sponsored this year by two nonprofit scientific societies: the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The American Chemical Society is chartered by the U.S. Congress and has more than 164,000 members, making it the world’s largest singlediscipline scientific society.

It encourages its members to speak simply about their science and its importance to all of our lives. The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society, with some 261 affiliated groups serving 10 million individuals. Its mission is to “advance science and serve society.”

Fleeting Thoughts Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over.

One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the

day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest.

You just never know what may be around the corner.

Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down.

What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;

the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive.

This is appreciation.

This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them.

Carpe Diem always…

Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

effective communication to a diverse group of children and adults that became her eventual focus and passion.

Chernow believed that one powerful way to open doors and promote equal opportunity was to equip all individuals with better language skills. Beginning in 1963 with the publication of “Reading Exercises in Black History,” she turned her energies to both teaching and creating practical educational resources for individuals in various communities.

She held that race, ethnic background, economic status, birth language or prior educational experience must not be barriers to learning effective communication in English for any of her students. In addition, Chernow realized that those differences offered educators the opportunity to create and utilize innovative material targeted at developing better language skills, reaching and engaging more students.

“My mother believed that effective communication skills – whether through the spoken word or on

paper – were the first, best tools for anyone wishing to be successful in today’s world,” recalled Senior Vice President Chernow. “She said that people judge you on how well you speak and how well you write. This was the basis of her approach to teaching, and you could call it her affirmative action plan for her students.”

The Chernow scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time student enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a proven talent and interest in writing and language.

One recipient per year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism Dean, Howard Schneider.

What some people forget, “says Dean Schneider, “is that even in the age of YouTube, good writing is the key to good journalism, no matter how that journalism is delivered. The Chernow scholarship will be invaluable in helping us to nurture that idea.”

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has received the pledge of a $25,000 gift from Stony Brook Senior Vice President of Administration Barbara Chernow and her husband, William Farber, to establish The Carol Chernow Memorial Scholarship In Journalism. This gift will endow a scholarship to support the development of young writers – a lifelong goal of the late Carol Chernow’s professional career.

Carol Chernow, mother of SBU Senior Vice President Chernow, was a Brooklynborn New Yorker, educated at Brooklyn College, who taught several subjects and grade levels in New York City public schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Along with her husband, Fred Chernow – a New York City school principal, administrator, author and motivational speaker – Carol Chernow wrote several books on classroom teaching procedures and discipline, some of which remain in use today.

Photo Contest Deadline Residents, visitos, staff and volunteers at the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (Commack) are awed daily by the vibrant, beautiful photos that adorn the walls o fthe 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation center in Commack, all the results of the Center’s Annual Photo Contest, which is currently accepting entries. Deadline for entries is April 15th.

Amateur photographers may submit a maximum of five entries, at $5 per entry, in the following categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student. Entries into the Student Category must be

the work of a photographer under 18 years of age, or who is still in high school.

Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at the close of the contest, and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center.

Winning photographers will be awarded various cash prizes at a reception held in June, and winning photos will be enlarged and permanently displayed at the Gurwin Center for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the facility. The deadline for submissions is April 15th.

The Center’s renowned

contest, now celebrating its 20th year, is made possible by the Tiffen Company (Hauppauge), long-time sponsors of the contest in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and a former Gurwin resident.

The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today welcomed Richard Salgado, also known as “Big Daddy” to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside today to talk with young inmates in the Sheriff’s Special Youth Tier Initiative.

Salgado, who is a nationally known insurance broker to hundreds of celebrity athletes, is the owner of New York-based Coastal Advisors, LLC. Sheriff DeMarco’s Youth Tier Initiative was launched in September 2011 with the mission of promoting the successful transition of incarcerated youth, between the ages of 16 to

19, from jail to community life. The youth in the program receive intensive mentoring and educational services, and engage in a daily routine that promotes discipline and good habits.

The program has seen remarkable results since its inception.

Salgado, who spoke with the incarcerated youth inside the jail’s chapel, talked about how he went from being a poor student in high school to a success, and how certain people he met along the way influenced the course of his life: “It’s never too late to form new relationships.

Sheriff DeMarco echoed his sentiments and added, “We’re not in the business of warehousing kids in jail, we’re hoping to change the course of their lives by giving them opportunities to meet successful and positive role models like “Big Daddy” Rich Salgado.

These kids who engage in criminal behavior often have no idea there is a better life out there for them, and today Rich offered them a road map to making some of their dreams a reality.

He’s living the dream, and we thank him for sharing it with these incarcerated minors.”

The Allstate Foundation and local Allstate Agency Owner Dan Ratkewitch announced today that North Shore Animal League America Inc has been awarded a $5,000 grant, as part of an effort to rebuild and recover from Sandy. The grant is a part of The Allstate Foundation’s commitment to help local nonprofits in critically affected areas rebuild and meet the increased demand for services in local communities.

The Allstate Foundation established a $1 million fund to support local nonprofit organizations

in affected areas that have capacity and capabilities, but need additional resources to help people rebuild their lives. Local community organizations where Allstate agency owners are affiliated were selected or nominated to apply for grants up to $5,000.

“At Allstate, we have compassion to help those in need and ensure the safety and vitality of communities,” said Ratkewitch. “Thousands of our employees and agency owners are working around the clock to help our customers and communities rebuild from the devastation caused by Sandy. The grant

to the North Shore Animal League America Inc will help our community recover and ensure people can get the essential services they need.”

Allstate and The Allstate Foundation’s response to Sandy is part of a wideranging commitment to prepare families for life’s uncertainties. In 2012, The Allstate Foundation partnered with Feeding America to provide more than 1,000,000 meals to the needy and recently launched a partnership with Points of Light to provide emergency planning education for families around the country.

Rockin’ For Autism $30,000 for DDI. “Despite the economic climate we all face today, it is heartwarming to witness the generosity of the numerous volunteers and the nearly 500 attendees who have lent themselves to help benefit the more than 1,500 adults and children who receive

services daily through DDI’s many programs,” said Jim Cronin, Chairman of the event and a member of the DDI Foundation Board. “A special thanks to our Event Music Director, Steve Alliano, and the talented musicians who donated their services and talents to make the day a

true success.”

For a $30 donation guests enjoyed the sounds of live music with an allstar lineup of legendary Long Island bands including 1 Step Ahead, The Cold Spring Harbor Band paying tribute to Billy Joel, Just Cause and Dr. G’s All Star Veteran

acquire the knowledge and skill they need in the ESBOCES classroom and are able to apply what they learned when they engage in field experiences at facilities like Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.”

In addition to class instruction, students explore numerous health occupations and are introduced to the roles and responsibilities of nurse assistants, dietary aides, wellness aides, physical therapy aides, clerical, and housekeeping aides.

After graduation, students can apply for entry-level positions.

Caring As A Calling

It’s a very special feeling when you get the “calling to care.” Students enrolled in the Health Related Occupations program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale got that calling.

The course provides the skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary for health-

related opportunities, but these students have the strong desire to help people and, therefore, find it rewarding.

ESBOCES Health Related Occupations teacher Linda Niosi arranges supervised field experiences to places such as Brookhaven Memorial Hospital where the students

engage in activities that align with their course content. Every Thursday students go directly to the Volunteer Services Department. They sign in and are placed in areas that need assistance, like housekeeping, foodservice, or transport.

On their recent visit in February, Alishia S., Bay

Shore UFSD and Alice A., South Country CSD helped transport a patient to dialysis and learned how to relocate gurneys throughout the hospital to areas where they are needed.

Alishia A., who will be graduating from the Health Related Occupations program in June, hopes to secure a job at Southside Hospital.

She said, “I think that everything I learned in this class will help me to get a job at the hospital. I want to apply to Southside because it’s close to where I live. I had the opportunity to work in different departments each week at Brookhaven
