Long Island Opera For the first time in more than a decade, Long Island Opera is returning with live-staged opera productions in Nassau and Suffolk counties, beginning with a September 15th performance of George Bizet’s Carmen at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The two-hour production, which will start at 8 p.m., is a full-staged costumed performance with piano that will be led by Music Director Fabio Bezuti and star Long Island native Kara Cornell in the title role. A mezzo-soprano, Cornell, who hails from Smithtown, has performed throughout the United States and abroad. Long Island Opera’s singers hail the United States, Colombia, France, Italy, Mexico, Germany and Russia, and have performed with national and international opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Opera, LA Opera, New York City Opera, and at various festivals throughout the United States. “We are very excited about the talent we have this season,” said Long Island Opera’s Executive Director Joy Berta. Long Island Opera, which incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 1961 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is the oldest opera company in existence on Long Island. In the beginning, Long Island Opera performed a handful of operas throughout Nassau County but by the mid1980s its repertory had flourished and Long
Island Opera acquired the props, sets and costumes, along with scores to over two-dozen operas and operettas. In August 2009, Berta, an opera singer herself joined the company as Executive Director with the ultimate goal of bringing captivating, high-quality, fully-staged operas back to Long Island. Over the last four years, Berta has dedicated her time and talent to revive the company, promoting, organizing and producing performances throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties in an effort to bring opera back to Long Island. “We want Long Islanders to share with us the wonderful experience of live opera performances right here on Long Island,” said Berta adding, “We understand our audience is key to our success. On Saturday September 29th, The Long Island Museum will open its doors free of charge along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which the Long Island Museum will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide. Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. Dear Readers, I am so disappointed in the response - or, should I say, lack of response - by the town of Smithtown to the slaughter of close to 28 cats (my previous number of 15 was incorrect) at the town shelter. I was told by an exasperated office worker that the phone in Supervisor Vecchio’s office was ringing off the hook and that Supervisor Vecchio “wasn’t going to do anything about the shelter.” She refused to give me her name. Supervisor Vecchio did not return my phone call. Calls were sent right over to the shelter and, depending on when you called, you received the following excuse: “yes, rescue organizations were called,” or “the cats were sick.” Neither of those excuses were true. However, if shelter director G. Beatty found the shelter was overcrowded or he needed to “clean up the shelter” due to an official visit, all avenues to save lives should have been explored: adoption events (there were none)...contacting our wonderful rescue organizations (none received a call). Readers, what steps do you think the public should take to effect change at the Smithown Shelter? Please send me your comments. Readers, if you are trying to volunteer at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter or are “on hold” awaiting orientation, please send me an e-mail. The animals are languishing in their cages as they continue to wait for the animal shelter to get its act together.

“Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.” Those are the words my eyes fell on as I began this column. How very appropriate. Transitioning from vacation mode back into “real world” work mode has to be one of the more difficult processes known to man. I’m sure there are worse; but, at the moment, this feels like the steepest climb. Forget the 600+ e-mails that piled up while I was away. Never mind the sheer volume of stuff that managed to accumulate in every corner of life over the course of six days. (Six days. Not even a full week!) But what about the intangible “stuff” – all those
subtle things you tend to miss out on during any extended absence? The latest news and gossip… the various comings and goings of others… all those little daily nuances we barely notice… Sometimes, it seems like we are starting from square one, doesn’t it? So much for momentum. I suppose most of the area school children must feel the same way. Just when they get into the groove of lessons and homework and exams – that’s it. Summer vacation. Time to vegetate, and forget all that they’ve learned, over the next two months. Two whole months. Can you imagine being off from work for that long, with the expectation of having to climb back into a set
routine, meet deadlines and – oh yeah – not lose your mind in the process? I can’t. Absence can do many things – clear your head, refresh your motivation, make your heart grow fonder for whatever it is you may be fond of – but one thing it rarely does is eliminate the stress you will inevitably face upon your return. No one has managed to figure that one out yet. Does this make the absence any less worthwhile? No, I don’t think so. Because, for whatever headache you may be greeted with when you come back, the deep breath you take as you go is one to savor. And we could all use a little calming of the mind.
Winthrop-University Hospital will participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 30th, at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels
are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after fasting for at least eight hours) but are not high enough to be classified as having type 2 diabetes. A person who is not treated for pre-diabetes may soon develop type 2 diabetes and is also at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Stop Diabetes is the movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on millions of individuals and families across the nation. “Winthrop is proud to support the American Diabetes Association in its efforts to raise awareness, promote healthy living, and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts, and critical research that will ultimately put an end to diabetes once and for all,” said J. The Lourie Center for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital hosted a patient reunion that brought the first pediatric MS patient treated at Stony Brook together with newer patients to celebrate. The event, held at the Wang Center on the Stony Brook University campus, marked the 10year anniversary of the opening of the Center, which was founded by Lauren Krupp, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Pediatric MS Program Director. In 2002, the National Pediatric MS Center at Stony Brook was formed to address the unmet medical needs of children with MS. The Center was the first of its kind in the nation. This year Stony Brook University received a $2.5 million gift from Robert and Lisa Lourie to advance research and clinical care at the Center, which was subsequently renamed in their honor. Historically viewed as an adult-onset disease and difficult to diagnose in
children, MS affects approximately eight-toten thousand children in the U.S. “These children and young adults who we have treated for years should be proud of how they have handled the challenges of their disease,” said Dr. Krupp. “We were thrilled to celebrate with them and mark the 10-year anniversary of the Center.” Dr. Krupp said that because MS is characterized by relapsing and remitting symptoms with unpredictable timing, children are particularly affected by the disease course, not only physically, but also emotionally. For these reasons, Dr. Krupp explained, patient and family access to pediatric MS specialists and other professionals at a multidisciplinary center is critical for integrating care of the multiple facets of the disease and addressing the well-being of the patients and their families. Comprehensive care that emphasizes the continuity of services is also essential for the longterm management of the disease.
The reunion provided an opportunity for increased connectivity and social support for members of the young MS community. The celebration also provided a chance to share their experiences with each other and the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Lourie Center. Maisha Leonard, 27, from Setauket, a longtime patient of Dr. Krupp and the first patient treated at the Center, attended the reunion. Maisha’s diagnosis fueled Dr. Krupp’s inspiration to develop a pediatric MS center at Stony Brook. Approximately 15 other patients and their families took part in the celebration. Many of the patients already knew each other from the Teen Adventure Program (TAP) that is run by the Lourie Center each summer. In its eight year, the TAP is a unique program designed to teach young MS patients about their disease and ways to live a healthy life. The camp offers tools to build a positive self-image while developing confidence and life-long friendships.

Drug Take Back Day
Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Pharmacy Department has scheduled a drug “take back” day on Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in partnership with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Members of the community may safely dispose of unused or expired medications rather than discarding them in the garbage or flushing them down the
toilet which could lead to e n v i r o n m e n t a l contamination. There will be bins in the hospital’s main lobby for the collection of these items. This past April, Good Samaritan successfully collected more than 240 pounds of unused medications. Unused or expired pharmaceuticals can pose unnecessary risks to individuals and the community. Drug “take back” days offer a
safe and environmentally friendly disposal program that proactively addresses potential hazards associated with improper management. The program helps protect the natural environment, avoid accidental poisoning and helps prevent against prescription drug abuse. RONKONKOMA STREET FAIR - The Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Ronkonkomas’ 7th Annual Street Fair was recently held. There were hundreds of vendor booths manned by community and civic organizations, as well as merchants with items ranging from purses, T-shirts, art, children’s toys, etc. Thousands of local residents attended and enjoyed the shopping, entertainment, array of foods and performances by many neighborhood groups.
On Friday evening, August 3rd, Connetquot School District Director of Music Education JonMichael Lasher welcomed Roger Humphrey and his Southend (UK) Boys & Girls Choir to Bohemia. In a joint concert with the Connetquot HS Girls’ Choir, these British visitors practiced and performed with their ‘colonial’ hosts for an appreciative audience of family, friends and visitors. This year’s twoweek tour of America began in Virginia Beach (VA) with additional performances in Washington (DC), Philadelphia and New York City, before their concert with the Connequot HS Chorus. Setting The Stage Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. once again pulled out another successful stop on his 2012 Bloodbath Tour, bringing blood drives throughout Suffolk County. On a recent Sunday at the Ronkonkoma Day Street Fair, held by the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce, Legislator Kennedy brought two blood buses to Ronkonkoma on his annual quest to fill County
blood banks. Legislator Kennedy has already had much success with this year’s “Bloodbath” blood drive tour. The tour bus has made stops at the Smithtown Day Fair, the 3rd Annual Bloodfest held at the Suffolk County Legislature and most recently at Ronkonkoma Day. During the blood drive, people are asked to donate blood and once screened; blood is drawn by trained nurses from Long Island
Blood Services in the air conditioned comfort of the Bloodbath Tour Bus. For every pint donated, three lives are saved. With blood banks at an all-time low, it is imperative to make blood donations whenever possible. Currently the guidelines state you can make donations every eight weeks. This past weekend, at Ronkonkoma Day, 86 people were screened while 53 pints of blood were collected.

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. The Convocation coincided with the first day of classes for the fall semester at the College. The program included a welcoming address from Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of the College; a keynote address by H. Carl McCall, Chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees and remarks by Dafny Irizarry, Chairwoman of the College’s Board of Trustees. In addition, the College welcomed faculty members and students, honored six SUNY Chancellor Award recipients, two Professor Emeritus designees and one faculty member recently honored with a special state-wide award.
