The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The exhibitions featured in this year’s Museum Day Live! event include Long Island, America’s 1950s Frontier featuring iconic

Winthrop-University Hospital will participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 30th, at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after

fasting for at least eight hours) but are not high enough to be classified as having type 2 diabetes. A person who is not treated for pre-diabetes may soon develop type 2 diabetes and is also at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Stop Diabetes is the movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on millions of individuals and families across the nation. “Winthrop is proud to support the American Diabetes Association in its efforts to raise awareness, promote healthy living, and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts, and critical research that will ultimately put an end to diabetes once and for all,” said J. Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, Director of The Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop. “We encourage members of the community to join with Winthrop on September

SBPLIgolf@scc-cm.com. To register online, visit www.SBPLIgolf.com. You may also call Will Recce, Chairman of the Golf Committee at 631.567.0200 if you are unable to register online or have questions regarding the Golf Outing. The outing is in memory of Senator Johnson’s dear friend, Fred Breithut, Founder and Chairman, SBPLI, who passed away on April 26th, 2010. In 1984, the year before he retired, Mr. Breithut founded SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, a non-profit organization focusing on closing the gap between the skills needed in Long Island’s business community and the schools that prepare the island’s workforce. Under Mr. Breithut’s leadership, more than 100 such partnerships were formed. In 1999, Mr. Breithut brought the FIRST (For

Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) to Long Island, in which high school students work with their professional mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create their 130-pound robots, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students. Proceeds from the golf outing will be used to help support the costs associated with SBPLI’s programs: Junior FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (Jr. FLL), FLL Qualifying and C h a m p i o n s h i p Tournaments and Long Island FIRST Robotics

Competition, all of which cost more than $250,000 to host. These robotics programs help students grades K-12 garner an interest in science, engineering and technology and learn about teamwork, problem solving and “gracious professionalism.” In the event of inclement weather, please call the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club at 631.232.9850 extension 1. If the course is unplayable, golfers will receive a voucher to play at the course for another day. The reception and dinner will go on as planned.

Dear Readers,

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways. Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight. Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right. Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives... “On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,

confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage. All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter. These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

www.htaf.org dscofield@brookhaven.org brookhaven.org/animalshelter 631.286.4940 300 Horseblock Rd. Brookhaven, NY 11719 Readers, if you have ever considered adopting a dog, please come forward and do it now. This is a crises situation; the shelter is overburdened and trying desperately to find each and every animal in its care a wonderful loving home. Beds, blankets, and food are needed and can be dropped off at the Brookhaven Shelter or, if more convienient, at Century 21AA Realty, 1596 Straight Path, corner of Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. Marianne Lappas and her husband John will be making trips to the shelter to drop off donations, so ask for Marianne. A special shout out to the Suffolk County Police, the SPCA and the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Employees for a job well done. Readers, if you do adopt, please let me know and e-mail a picture or two so that all of us can share in the happiness.

Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

From Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st, Panera Bread is “egging on” donations of nonperishable food items to Island Harvest by providing guests who drop off one or more can or box before 11 a.m. with a free Grilled Breakfast Sandwich of their choice right on the spot. The offer is valid at all 22 Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes from September 17th through the 21st. “Last year, we grilled up over 3,000 free Grilled Breakfast Sandwiches and

Coolers were distributed to member agencies that collect food at Island Harvest’s central distributions enabling them to safely transport fresh, perishable and frozen product to their facilities. Funding for the LICF grant was made possible, in part, by the Greentree Foundation Fund and the Col. William Smith Fund. Since 1978 LICF has been making grants to improve our region and guide donors with their philanthropic endeavors. More than $130 million has been granted from hundreds of funds established by individuals, families, and businesses. One beneficiary agency, Copiague-based Circle of Love Ministry, serves over 1,200 people each month. Additional freezer and refrigeration capacity will allow the non-denominational organization be able to store more food and, consequently, give more to people who need food assistance. Other recipient agencies include the Salvation Army and KoLoKi in Freeport. With requests for food assistance at an all-time high on Long Island, food pantries and soup kitchen are not only struggling to keep up with increased demand, but many are in need of suitable equipment to properly store perishable and frozen foods. Thanks to a $25,000 grant by the Long Island Community Foundation made to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, much needed help is on the way. The grant was used to purchase 14 refrigerators, 12 freezers, six shelving units and 26 coolers for 45 of Island Harvest’s member agencies that serve over 10,000 people - from the very youngest to our senior most citizens every month. the J-STEP Program and equine therapy, each participant is able to gain increased self-confidence and improved job skills to help them obtain employment in his or her community. In 2010, The New York Community Bank

Foundation was one of the initial contributors of the J-STEP pilot run and the program has since been successful in implementing a recycling program, organic farming, and horticulture. With the support of local organizations like The

New York Community Bank Foundation and The WE CARE Fund, J-STEP continues to help adults with disabilities progress into the workforce and to further develop a green living program and an energy conservation program at Pal-O-Mine.

Suicide Awareness Walk Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together To Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is

dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.” “Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for

anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.” Suicide and suicide

prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.; · It is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 14 to 19 years of age; · It is the second leading cause of death for young adults 19 – 24 years of age;

· Elderly suicide rates are 50% higher than for young people; · One of every five suicides in the country is committed by a returning soldier from Iraq or Afghanistan – or once every 90 minutes; · For every suicide, there is an average of 13 suicide attempts; · 8 out of 10 people who

commit suicide tell someone first. On-site registration for the Walk begins at 11 a.m. Online registration is taking place right now at www.longislandcrisiscent er.org or call 516.826.0244 for more information. A minimum donation of $25 per person is suggested.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish. Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there

exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team. Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent? Rather, they must be quite invested. Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others. Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior. But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made. If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

Legislator Rob Calarco is proud to support the American Kennel Club’s popular Meet The Breeds event, the purpose of which is to showcase a large variety of breeds of both dogs and cats, for the pet-loving public. Meeting The Breeds

Breeds Event is scheduled to take place October 20th and 21st at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. “Like a lot of people, I love animals and am a pet owner. My cat, Jake, is fifteen years old, and my dog, Buck, a Miniature Pinscher, is eight. As a responsible pet owner, it is my job to see that they are well cared for, everything from training and grooming to healthy food

BACK TO BASICS - Connetquot Central School District welcomed students, faculty and staff back to school after a relaxing summer. The district’s seven elementary schools, two middle schools, high school and pre-school program opened its doors to a student population of over 7,000 students for the 2012-2013 school year. and regular vet visits. The The excited students brought a genuine enthusiasm for the new school year and were AKC event brings this looking forward to meeting with old friends and making new ones. kind of responsibility to the forefront in a really fun and interesting way. So I invite everyone to check out their site, http://classic.akc.org/meet _the_breeds/thedetails.html#nav-details (AKC Meet the Breeds 2012) and stay tuned for the Pet Promise. I will be asking you to sign it. I know I will,” said Leg. Calarco.

KINDERGARTEN PLAYDATE - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School hosted their annual “Kindergarten Playdate” to welcome the newest students to the school. Before the first day of school, incoming kindergarteners met with their new classmates and teachers. The Sycamore Avenue PTA provided a day full of fun, friends, and food for the future graduating class of 2025 to acclimate themselves to their new surroundings before the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

Community Awareness

Legislator Rob Calarco and the Play for Peace Soccer Tournament Committee were pleased to be able to donate the proceeds from the 2012 Annual Play for Peace Soccer Tournament to Patchogue-Medford Library. The money is to be used for programs that target the Latino population to promote cultural assimilation. The Play for Peace Soccer Tournament, first organized through Leg. Calarco’s office in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League as a

response to the Marcello Lucero tragedy, is in its fourth year. In that time, the tournament has grown and become a tradition, the purpose of which is to bring the sports-loving community together to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, promote tolerance and raise money for local programs and organizations that actively promote ethnic peace, unity, and assimilation. “I am proud of Play for Peace and all the good people who take part in the tournament for all the right reasons. The

tournament really grew this year and that has meant having proceeds to further the mission. I and the Play for Peace Committee are particularly grateful to our numerous sponsors, particularly Gershow R e c y c l i n g ; Bridgehampton National Bank; Tritec Real Estate Co.; and the Suffolk County P.B.A., who generously supported this effort for the good of the community. We hope to welcome you back next year,” said Leg. Calarco.

Stony Brook University alumnus Mario Gotoh (Doctor of Musical Arts ’12) received the 2012 Patricia Kerr Ross Award for exemplary student achievement in the arts. The award is given annually by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher to students who have demonstrated excellence, originality and promise in the arts. It is accompanied with $1,000 and is intended as a bridge between SUNY study in the arts and entry into a professional arts career. “The Patricia K. Ross Award allows SUNY to honor some of our most creative arts students and provide them with financial assistance to support their ongoing work,” said Chancellor Z i m p h e r . “Congratulations to Mario Gotoh for winning such a

prestigious and competitive award.” Gotoh, a dual-degree recipient with a DMA in violin and viola performance, was nominated for the award by two professors, Nicholas Cords, viola artist-in-residence at Stony Brook University; and Philip Setzer, professor of violin and chamber music at Stony Brook University and a founding member of the renowned Emerson String Quartet. “It is very unusual to work with a student who does many different things in music and does all of them equally and very well,” said Setzer. “Mario Gotoh is just such a musician. musician and an excellent teacher and citizen of the University. She is most deserving of this prestigious award.” “I have been very fortunate to work with Philip Setzer and Nicholas Cords, who have nurtured my development as a musician and in becoming my own teacher. I'm grateful to receive the Patricia Kerr Ross Award to support my work and life as a violinist and violist,” said Gotoh. "The invaluable support from the faculty throughout my studies in the newlyproposed dual-degree doctorate in violin and viola performance attests to the open-minded environment and broad outlook of the Stony Brook University Music Department.”

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has received a $5,000 grant for the conservation treatment of a valuable seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting in its collection. The grant was made by the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a regranting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts. Stephanie Gress, the Vanderbilt's director of curatorial services, said the painting, City of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (1620-1676), is in “poor condition and in urgent need of restoration.” The work will be performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan of Flushing, NY. The painting, original to

the collection of William K. Vanderbilt II, was treated last in 1986, Gress said. “The darkened varnish was cleaned and the painting was stabilized by adding a cloth lining to the back of the canvas. The museum will provide matching funds to refurbish the ornate, gilt frame.” Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said. He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.) “A lot of Dubbels's work was attributed to another artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” she said. “Much of his work is in

collections in Florence and London and in England's National Gallery. Our painting may be one of the few in this country.” Gress said the Vanderbilt collection includes other maritime paintings - a favorite of Mr. Vanderbilt - along with nineteenth-century American and Dutch portraits, genre paintings (scenes from everyday life), Spanish religious works and European landscapes. “Although Mr. Vanderbilt collected art and antique furnishings,” she said, “his focus as a collector was ethnographic artifacts,” many of which are displayed in the Memorial Wing of the Vanderbilt Mansion.

Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631-864-7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com
