Bereavement Support Group Good Shepherd Hospice, in conjunction with Good Samaritan Hospital, will host a free series, Bridge To Hope: A Young Adult Bereavement Support Group.

On Wednesdays, for eight consecutive weeks beginning December 5th through January 23rd, Bridge to Hope meetings will take place at Good Samaritan Hospital in the

Good Shepherd Hospice presents the 6th Annual Bob Sweeney Christmas Gathering to be held on Saturday December 1st at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington.

The 6th Annual Bob Sweeney’s Christmas/Holiday Gathering is free and open to school-age children (5 years old to 17 years old) who have experienced the death of an immediate family member – parent, grandparent or sibling. Caregivers will also participate in the day’s activities.

Arts and crafts, music, and sharing groups are part of the day. A Personal Pal will accompany each child to help them navigate through their feelings and emotions. This annual Christmas Gathering is provided by Good Shepherd Hospice through the generosity of the Robert L. Sweeney Memorial Fund.

Suffolk County Community College and Stony Brook University have formalized a new partnership that will provide full-tuition scholarships annually to full-time students who graduate from Suffolk and transfer to Stony Brook.

The agreement was signed

by Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, and Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University.

As part of the agreement, Stony Brook University will offer one full-tuition scholarship to select graduates from each of Suffolk’s three campuses, each academic year. Nominees for the scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 and, in addition to superior academic achievement, must d e m o n s t r a t e contributions to their campus and communities through activities and student leadership.

Scholarship finalists will be recommended by Dr. McKay and selected by Stony Brook’s scholarship committee.

The agreement also provides the scholars with counseling and advising

support as they transition from Suffolk to Stony Brook.

Dr. McKay said the agreement is a continuation of his “Stay on Long Island” initiative.

“I am pleased to expand the ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative through our new partnership with Stony Brook University. The ‘Stay On Long Island’ program is one I have been working on closely with Presidents from Long Island’s four-year institutions to ensure select graduating scholars from Suffolk receive scholarships to attend colleges and universities right here in our community.

Through these scholarships, students now have every chance for continued academic success and an increased likelihood that they will continue to live and work on Long Island.

The ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative is a way of cultivating the intellectual capital of those who have the best potential for transforming our region,” said Dr. McKay. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University stated, “Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College have

a long-standing history, and an on-going commitment, to serve the educational needs and aspirations of Suffolk County residents. Each year more than 600 students from Suffolk County Community College enroll at Stony Brook, one of the country's leading research universities and a member of the AAU. Stony Brook is proud to sponsor scholarships through the ‘Stay on Long Island Initiative’ and we applaud the efforts of Suffolk County Community College and the other partner schools to help us keep the best and brightest minds here on Long Island. Our County and our State deserve no less.”

Suffolk has similar agreements in place with Adelphi University, Briarcliff College, Dowling College, Five Towns College, Hofstra University, Long Island University - C.W. Post, Long Island University Riverhead, Long Island University - Brentwood, New York Institute of Technology, St. Joseph’s College and St. John’s University.

The memorial was constructed out of a granite boulder which originated from the site of the former 19th-century Griffing Avenue jail in Riverhead.

Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association.

“Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will

continue to be there for us when we need their care and expertise.”

The Hospital Council and other sponsoring associations ask everyone to spread the word about this fund and consider donating to the Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund.

Dahill added that the fund is an excellent way for any patient or family member who has received exceptional health care services in the past to show their appreciation for this care by helping these health care workers’ colleagues rebuild their lives.

Hospital and health care workers on Long Island and in other coastal areas of New York City and New Jersey were among the hardest hit by superstorm Sandy and thousands suffered devastating personal loss of homes and property.

The Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund was just established through the cooperative work of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), the Greater New York Hospital Association, and the American Hospital Association, with the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), the organization that represents all Long Island hospitals, supporting the fund’s local efforts on Long Island.

The charitable contributions will be managed by the United Hospital Fund and funds collected will provide

This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted.

For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right?

Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture.

Togetherness. Compassion.

Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out.

I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough.

This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced.

We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill.

Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced.

In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. On October 13th, the Farmingville-Holtsville Lions Club was invited to a Presentation Ceremony by the Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence at the CCI Miller Campus located in Medford.

This active Lions Club was recognized for donating $31,700 to the Lions Den since October 15th, 2003. In addition, the Farmingville-Holtsville Lions Club has adopted six Service Dogs through CCI and hopes to adopt another one in the Spring of 2013.

Sgt. Sam Cila, a Veteran of the Iraq War spoke about the injury to his left arm due to an IED blast on July 4th, 2005. He was teamed with his CCI Service Dog Gillian in 2009. Gillian helps him with daily tasks such as tugging and holding open doors while he carries packages which prevent the fatigue of overusing his right side. Gillian and Sam travel throughout the country completing speaking and physical endurance events to help

others heal through sports and an active lifestyle.

Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is an organization that promotes the concept of training specially bred dogs to help people with disabilities other than blindness. All CCI Dogs go through an intensive training process where they learn to master more than forty commands.

Dogs and Veterans are matched to form a team, and together they attend a two-week training program at a CCI Campus where they learn to work together.

Canine Companions for Independence Wounded Veterans Initiative provides highly trained assistance dogs, at no cost to Veterans and active duty military personnel with physical disabilities from Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and to military hospitals and medical centers.

CCI trains four different types of dogs to address different types of disabilities. Service Dogs assist adults with physical

Blanket In A Bag In response to hurricane victims still without electricity, Legislator Tom Muratore announced a Blanket In A Bag Drive to be held in his district office from Tuesday, November 13th, through Friday, November 30th. Donors are asked to place a new or clean, gently used blanket in a bag and deliver it to 325 Middle Country Road, Suite 3, in Selden (intersection of North

Ocean Avenue in the Waldbaum’s shopping center). The office will accept donations Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“Many people are still without power or heat, and the cold weather is approaching quickly,” stated Legislator Tom Muratore. “The warmth of a blanket is one way to alleviate the burden that Hurricane Sandy has

bestowed on many. I am hoping that we can band together as a community to help those in need.”

THE PENNY PROJECT - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School made a significant effort to help rescue local animals as a part of The Penny Project. With the help of teachers Ms. Helfer, Mrs. Squicciarini, and Mrs. Prico, the students and their parents donated items to the North Shore Animal League as a community service project after being inspired by Mrs. Squicciarini’s newly PLEDGING TO BE DRUG FREE - Connetquot Central School District’s John adopted puppy, Penny. The students wrote letters home with a buddy to ask for Pearl Elementary School recently hosted an anti-drug assembly featuring a donations of old towels, blankets, newspapers, stuffed animals and old pillows to performance by a group of peer mediators who demonstrated a Stomp Out Drugs skit donate to the shelter. Food Drive To Be Held To aid residents needing food and warmth as a result of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, Legislator Sarah Anker will be accepting nonperishable food items, water, bottled drinks, personal care items, pet food, household cleaning

supplies, new blankets, hats, gloves scarves and socks beginning Tuesday, November 13th.

Donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Legislator’s office at 620 Route 25A, Suite B, in Mount Sinai.

Collected items will be distributed by Long Island Cares to local food pantries and community service organizations in need. No glass containers or perishable foods will be accepted.

“The devastating results of the hurricane

continues to effect all residents of Suffolk County, and so many community members still have little to no access to food or warmth,” said Legislator Anker. “It is times like these that we must pull together and help one another.”

And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

Trust The Name That Has Weathered Storms

At the October 9th meeting of the Connetquot School District Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman took time to recognize a number of students for outstanding achievement over the course of the summer.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Peggie S. Staib distributed certificates to each of the students and their coaches, while praising their outstanding efforts. The competing students represented the Connetquot Public Library, and finished tied for 7th place among the 36 competing library teams in the 2012 Battle of the Books!

Battle Of The Books

Javits Center at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The Battle of the Books is a reading competition for teens entering grades six through nine as of September. According to coach Angela Breslin, Connetquot Public Library Teen-Librarian, “This year 36 library teams from across Suffolk County competed in a daylong battle that was held at Stony Brook. Our team achieved a tie for 7th place, out of the 36 Suffolk County libraries!

The members of the team voted and chose the name The Battle Bakers, which was based on the theme of one of the books, Close To Famous, by the author Joan Bauer.”

Art Inspired

Mrs. Patricia Murthy, Assistant Principal of Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, recently led a first-grade class in a lesson on creating their own books!

On September 25th Mrs. Murthy worked with Mrs. Goncalves’ students to create their own book, as opposed to just reading to the students.

This innovative lesson had the students using current technology, along with a free internet program found on Storybird.com.

Students took turns

using the ‘stylus’ on their ‘Prometheus’ board to select images, and create an original story to go along with their choices.

Mrs. Murthy explained that the “…Storybird program uses artwork provided by contributing artists to inspire stories, and encourage the students to write.

Students demonstrated a higher level of questioning, and sophisticated vocabulary usage as they created their book.”

Mrs. Goncalves encouraged the students

by adding some of the words the students used in the story, to her class ‘Wow-Word-Wall’!

The students decided to call their collaborative book Rosie, No Ordinary Bunny.

Mrs. Murthy thoroughly enjoyed working with Mrs. Goncalves’ students on this Storybird project, and encouraged them to save and share their wonderful story with family and friends at home.

FALL FUN - What could be more fun than going on hayrides, wearing orange pumpkin shirts they painted, having orange snacks, learning how to weigh, measure and decorate pumpkins, and counting and tasting the seeds? The answer shouted by pre-schoolers at the Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale was “Nothing. This is the best.” The children are in Lisa Havekotte’s Early Childhood Education class, where Eastern Suffolk BOCES high school juniors and seniors begin their training as future elementary school teachers and child care providers.

Students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES Suffolk Aviation Academy (SAA) Professional Pilot Program participated in a worksite tour of Southwest Airlines at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

Administrative Coordinator for Ground Operations at Southwest Airlines Linda Castellano provided ESBOCES students with a “behind the scenes” tour of the

ground operations including ramp and customer service at the airport.

Teacher Lou Ballester said, “Students stood on the tarmac and observed Southwest 737 arrival and departure procedures firsthand. This was a valuable and useful excursion for the students.”

Work Experience Coordinator Rosaria Broesler said, “I coordinated the worksite

tour opportunity so the students could also explore employment opportunities with Southwest.

At the conclusion of the tour, the students engaged in a question and answer session with Southwest employees and learned about the various jobs available and job duties within the Southwest organization.”

the VFW presenting many citations to Eagle Scouts across Suffolk County, Boy Scout Fingerprinting Merit Badge Counselor, Usher at St. Thomas More R.C. Church and President of The Rose Borowski Memorial Scholarship Foundation, an annual scholarship given to a graduating Hauppauge High School Senior for exhibiting excellent qualities in community service, scholastic achievement and Scouting.

Ed was surprised by his son, Paul, at the recent St. Thomas More Church Young at Heart Seniors Group meeting in Hauppauge with a 90th birthday cake for him to celebrate with his friends.

In addition, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. presented him a Suffolk County Proclamation and new St. Thomas More Church Pastor, Father Antony Asir, shared his birthday wishes with Ed. The next night, he celebrated with some family and friends, at the Patchogue Kiwanis Oktoberfest that he attends annually, where his son, Robert, is the current President of the Patchogue Kiwanis.

Wynn explained the benefits of, and steps used in, recycling. She explained that children need to be responsible for taking care of the earth.

Ms. Wynn began the presentation by asking students if they could explain the concept of recycling, and if they were aware of items that could be reused, or products made from such materials.

She was pleasantly surprised when almost every student raised a hand to answer those questions! She explained the steps, benefits and the simplicity of recycling.

She also displayed wonderfully creative products that are made from recycled material,

such as pencils, paper, tshirts, shopping bags and even bracelets and decorations!

Several students also took part in an interactive project using scrap paper to make their own paper by using scrap paper, water, a screen, sponges and a pan!

The students left the assembly with a greater understanding and a sense of responsiblity for taking care of the earth for the years to come.

Mrs. McNally, and principal Mrs. Denise Toscano, thanked Danielle Wynn for sharing such an interesting, and important, message with the students of the Idle Hour Elementary School.

post-retirement life has been focused on his family and volunteerism. He has volunteered at the Long Island Veteran’s Home in Stony Brook, New York for over 6 years. He received the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame Award by Senator John Flanagan in 2010. He, also, enjoys building model ships, painting, sketching and traveling.

He continues to active in the community with the St. Thomas More Church Young at Heart Seniors Group. Ed has been very active in both, Jamaica, Queens and Hauppauge.

In Jamaica, Ed was Commander of the Catholic War Veterans in 1945, President of the Holy Name Society and Member of The Appolite's Polish Social Club, Polish Legion American Veterans #5, St. Vincent Society and Usher at St. Joseph's R.C. Church.

In Hauppauge, Ed was Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5796 in 1980 located in Kings Park, Advisor of Explorer Post 1776, maintaining the Richard "Bull" Smith Historical Trail in Smithtown and Brookhaven started in 1975, Service Officer of

Wynn, representing Islip Town’s innovative WRAP program, was invited to discuss the importance of recycling to the Oakdale youngsters.

Edward J. Borowski celebrated his 90th birthday recently with St. Thomas More Church Young at Heart Seniors Group of Hauppauge and at Patchogue Kiwanis Oktoberfest with family and friends.

Edward is a World War II Veteran as a Storekeeper 2nd Class (“SK2”) in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Battleship Texas from November 27th, 1942 to October 4th, 1945.

Among many medals received, Edward was honored with the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, AsiaticPacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars and the Philippine LIB Medal.

He was married to his late wife, Rose for over 47 years until she passed away in 1999. They originally resided in Jamaica, New York when they were married. They had three children: Janet, Robert and Paul (and Kathryn). They moved to Hauppauge, New York in 1966 and have resided there ever since. He has four grandchildren, Stephanie, James and Michael and Amanda Rose.

He had worked as a technician for Fairchild and Hobart and retired from Mueller Martini in Hauppauge at age 70. His
