Association (CTA) have stepped up to work with student groups, community PTA’s and other volunteer agencies to provide physical, emotional and financial support for the families affected. For the weeks that followed the devastation of Hurricane Sandy Connetquot teachers volunteered to help members of the community through the heartache and recovery. Currently, there are 20 Connetquot families that have been displaced as a result of the damage to their homes and property, particularly in the Idle Hour area of Oakdale. Members of the Connetquot Teachers
adversely affected by the recent storms, and that they will have brighter days ahead.” Most recently, Connetquot teachers have volunteered to collect, sort and distribute needed supplies of clothing, food and water. Teachers, many of whom live in the Connetquot School District, also used their demolition, and construction, skills in helping neighbors recover from the damage of recent storms. Felicio again encourages community residents affected by the storms to contact the CTA office at 631.676.3061 for a Relief Committee application. Just days after the hurricane struck the area, the CTA created a $15,000 emergency fund to provide support for community residents.

Recovery Support
I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation. She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained
in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,
what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?” Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

Realizing A Dream
Vietnam War veteran George Cressy would have been pleased today. After many years of trying to have a traffic sign erected on the Long Island Expressway directing travelers to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, his daughter Katie Cressy Heaviside today saw his dream realized thanks to her efforts after his death last year and thanks to the generosity of Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Awarded a Bronze Star for heroism in Vietnam in the Battle of Dak To, Cressy returned to Long Island and remained active in the 1980’s veteran movement to assert pride in Vietnam War service. He was also a member of the committee that erected the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Bald Hill in Farmingville, NY. While happy that a memorial existed, Cressy was troubled that there was no sign on the Long Island Expressway at Exit 63 directing travelers to the memorial. He met with opposition from the Department of Transportation, primarily due to the fact that an organization had to commit to the cost of the sign and its yearly upkeep, and the issue was still not resolved at the time of his death last year. Bethpage Federal Credit Union, many of whose members are veterans, offered to pick up all costs. “My Dad was a person who never gave up. He was determined to get a
sign erected after the memorial was built, but sadly he died before seeing his dream come to fruition. I think he would be happy to see that I inherited his stubborn streak and did not give up. Thankfully, Bethpage Federal Credit Union also believed in this. All in all, I think my Dad would be proud of our efforts today,” said Katie Cressy Heaviside. Notes Bethpage Federal Credit Union President/CEO Kirk Kordeleski, whose father served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, “Today is about recognizing veterans who served in Vietnam and Vietnam veteran George Cressy who wouldn’t let go of his dream. Bethpage recognizes the sacrifices that all veterans have made, and continue to make, to ensure the many freedoms we enjoy and we are pleased to lend our support in whatever way we can.”

Marching Against Cancer
247338N1205
Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, recently recognized a group of generous students and parents who raised money to fight Breast Cancer. Organized by Mrs. Nicole Francess, the John Pearl team accepted pledges, and used their own allowances, to take part in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 15th. Joining a crowd of what was estimated to be 2,500 walkers, the John
Pearl group marched early in the morning at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College. According to Mrs. Denise Shannon the John Pearl team made a donation of $200 to help fight the disease, and increase Breast Cancer awareness. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s nationwide series of walking events to raise funds, and awareness, in the fight to end scourge of breast cancer. Close to 300 such walks take place each year.
Congratulations to the following John Pearl Elementary School students and parents for their successful participation in this year’s Breast Cancer Walk: Nicole, Abby, Olivia and Madeline Francess; Denise and Paige Shannon; Louise and Giana Buchanan; Phylene and Marina Fizzuoglio; Cassandra and Courtney Catcher; Maeve Cornish. Making Their Fans Proud pride and sportsmanship all season long. And on this very cold Super Bowl Sunday, the players showed how much of a team they could be. As thegame came to an end, the Ducks lined up proudly to shake hands with the Titans, showing respect for their opponents. The coaching staff is to be congratulated for their work with these youngsters. They did a wonderful job of teaching these 6, 7 and 8-year olds the skills to appreciate the game of football, yet e m p h a s i z e d sportsmanship and respect for their opponents. Players, parents and
coaches will long appreciate this exciting SYAG football season. Congratulations to the members of the SYAG Ducks, and a sincere ‘thank you’ to the dedicated coaches (and moms!) for a season that will long be remembered: Johnny Bender, Eric Crescenzo, Justin DeLorenzo, Aiden Fremer, Anthony Gomez, Derrick Maldonado, Joseph Maniaci, Pharo McCreary, Corey Metro, Anthony Philips, Elias Torres, Ryan West; Head Coach Chris Scocco, Assistant Coaches John Stoll, Phil Maniaci, Steve Bender, Russ Grippi and Oregon Ducks ‘Team MAKING THEIR FANS PROUD - Proud Oregon Ducks and Coaching staff gather Mom’ Judy Bender. for a final team photo, clutching their Super Bowl awards! The Titans dominated the first half of the game, but the mighty Ducks came on strong in the second half. 28-12. Despite the fact that the Ducks finished the game on the short end of a 28-12 score, the coaches, parents, grandparents and friends gave the team a standing ovation. Burlington Gives Back Options for Community Living, Inc. was the grateful recipient of donated merchandise at the Grand Opening ceremony of the Burlington Coat Factory newest Long Island store in Stony Book. The company’s Burlington Gives Back
program donates new merchandise to community nonprofits where Burlington Coat Factory opens a local store. “Burlington Coat Factory donated numerous clothing and home deco items as well as toys which will be distributed to Options’
residents and families,” stated Denise Waterhouse, development specialist, Options for Community Living. “We are very grateful to Burlington Coat Factory for helping our residents during this holiday season.”
Local Artist Chosen Long Island native, Elaine Faith Thompson has been chosen by Bruno Event Team to paint and design the commemorative poster for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th-30th, 2013, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton.
Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she is presently working every day to complete the painting in time for holiday gifts. Raising Funds For Relief

The New York Islanders announced today that they raised $28,071 for area residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. These funds go directly to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need. Over the last week, people from around the world came together online to bid in the special Hockey With A Heart auction featuring one-ofa-kind sports and e n t e r t a i n m e n t experiences. Local sports teams, organizations and individuals all donated to this unique auction, hosted by the Islanders, in an effort to help those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Fifteen donors contributed a total
of 33 items, which were bid on more than 300 times. This auction raised $22,317 that will all go towards the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief fund. On Monday, November 12th, the Islanders held the Hockey With A Heart open skate fundraiser. The team invited all area residents to join them for a day away from dealing with the Hurricane damage and over 2,000 people attended. The Islanders and SMG opened Nassau Coliseum’s ice free of charge for anyone who participated. Those who visited the arena were encouraged to bring monetary and nonperishable donations, while all concession proceeds also went
directly to those in need. All together, along with employees from the New York Islanders, arena management company SMG and Coliseum concessionaire SAVOR, the team collected over 5,200 pounds of food, $5,754 in cash and countless amounts of clothing that filled two 24foot box trucks amounting to 13,000 pounds. The Islanders donated all bedding, blankets and clothing to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, all food and baby supplies to Island Harvest and all money to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need.
Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty (DGSIR), one of the nation’s leading realtors, is embracing the spirit of the holiday season by hosting a Toys for Tots drive that encompasses 54 locations from Manhasset to Shelter Island on Long Island’s North Shore. The event is planned for December 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m. “The Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization is excited to be promoting Toys for Tots across the North Shore of Long Island,” said Patricia Petersen, president and CEO of DGSIR. “As a group, we have a history of coming together to support good causes and we are particularly thrilled to support Toys for Tots, especially in light of the many Long Island families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.” Last year, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s Laura Zambratto, an associate director with the organization’s upper tier marketing program, hosted a Toys for Tots drop off during an open house at one of her listings. She decorated the home, provided refreshments and by the end of the open house had greeted more than 100 visitors including neighbors, prospective homebuyers, real estate agents and friends. “I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” she recalls. “One person brought two
new bicycles. I knew right away that the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization would want to join with me this year and help collect toys for children in our local communities. Of course, we didn’t know at the time how great the need would be this year.” Under Laura’s guidance, a total of 54 locations will be hosting festive drop off events with decorations and refreshments, among them DGSIR office locations* and at every Daniel Gale Sotheby’s open house across the North Shore on December 9. See www.danielgale.com and the local newspapers for open house locations. Those interested in donating can drop off new, unwrapped toys either at local Daniel Gale Sotheby’s offices from December 2 through December 9 or at the open houses on December 9. “The Marine Corps is sending out 20 Marines to help with our collection efforts on that day,” explains Laura. “They spend the afternoon with us and will answer questions about the program.” The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. *DGSIR office drop off locations include:
Syosset, Huntington, East Norwich, Locust Valley, Glen Head/Sea Cliff, Manhasset, Shelter Island, Stony Brook, Garden City, Cold Spring Harbor, Cutchogue. Founded in 1922, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty consistently leads the nation in achieving one of the highest average sales prices in the country. DGSIR is a $1.8 billion dollar plus organization with close to 600 sales associates in 21 sales offices spanning Long Island. Services include a Relocation Division, an award-winning Marketing & Technology Department, a newlyformed Development Marketing Group, Commercial and Rental Divisions; Ambassador Abstract title company, and a Wells Fargo Home Mortgage affiliation. The Sotheby’s International Realty® affiliate for Long Island’s North Shore since 1976, DGSIR has gained national and international recognition, including top honors worldwide. In addition to its place on the Regents Board of Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty is active in Real Trends and The Realty Alliance (comprising some of the real estate industry’s most influential companies with participation “by invitation only”). Turkey Drive Donation turkeys were donated in the days immediately following, bringing the total amount of turkeys collected this year to 10,000. Expanded this year to support Hurricane Sandy Victims, the Bethpage Turkey Drive collected frozen turkeys, cleaning supplies, diapers and shelf-stable nonperishable food for Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization which has been extensively involved in supporting victims of Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of volunteers donated their time to help assist in the collection, helping to unload car deliveries, sort through groceries, and load donations onto Island Harvest’s refrigerated truck. Volunteers included students from Hofstra University’s Women’s Golf Team and Men’s Lacrosse Team and various athletes from Stony Brook University. Since 2009, hundreds of Long Island residents, businesses and volunteers have come out to assist in the Bethpage Turkey Drive, which after four years, now has cumulatively collected
20,000 turkeys and 35,000 pounds of food, which are then provided to Long Island’s families in need. Highlights from this year’s effort include a large donation from Bethpagebased Goya Foods that supplied more than 8,000 pounds of food, and Centereach residents Jennifer and Mike Trombino, who donated 50 frozen turkeys worth $1,400. “This year’s drive took on increased meaning as exemplified by our supporters and our committed volunteers, many of whom themselves remain temporarily displaced from the storm, having suffered great damage to their own homes,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “We are thankful to have the means to support our fellow Long Islanders during this time of adversity, and want to thank again all of our partners including Cablevision, the NY Islanders and Connoisseur Media – for continuing to support this vital effort.”
Savings Bonds Enter The Online Age (NAPSI)—There’s good news for those looking for a convenient way to save for the future. While the Treasury Department is phasing out the familiar paper version of the savings bond, it is still possible to buy savings bonds directly from the Treasury D e p a r t m e n t — electronically. By opening a free TreasuryDirect account, consumers can set up an online savings program and purchase electronic savings bonds or other Treasury securities either through direct deposit from their pay or from
their checking or savings account. The program combines the ease and convenience of an electronic transaction with the dependability of U.S. savings bonds. To learn more or to set up an account, visit the website at www.treasurydirect.gov.

BOCES Receives Grant
For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
Eastern Suffolk BOCES is pleased to announce that the Automotive Technology Program received a $10,000 grant from the Collectors Foundation. Established in 2005, the Collectors Foundation is a philanthropic movement among collector vehicle and boat enthusiasts who support young people and the future interests of the collector community. The Foundation awards scholarships and educational grants to organizations committed to "hands-on education" and making a difference in the lives of young people through the appeal of historic vehicles and vessels - building the next generation of collectors. E S B O C E S
Administrative Coordinator Audrey Gottlieb was the driving force behind the agency and the Automotive Technology program getting the grant. She said, “I applied for the grant because it would enable ESBOCES to offer an after school Automotive Club at the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center (MTC) in Oakdale and provide the students the opportunity to learn how to build a Tbucket.” A T-bucket is a specific style of hot rod, based on a Ford Model T of the 1915 to 1927 era. It is extensively modified featuring a big engine, large rear tires, and tough drivetrains to handle the power of a V8 engine.
Automotive Teacher Steve Celeste said, “Our goal is to build the T-bucket in three stages. The students would learn welding skills, automotive repair, custom automotive detailing, painting, and engine building. Team work, time management, and good communication skills are also very important on this project.” Principal Tom McGrath said, “We want to give students an exciting, meaningful project that they can work on throughout the school year and complete a sleek, shiny, beautiful collector automobile. I think it would increase student confidence and spark an interest in the automotive field.”
Teens And Stress
(NAPSI)-The changes teens encounter during adolescence may create significant stress. Rather than share their feelings, many teens struggle on their own, often choosing unhealthy ways to cope. Because stress affects a teen physically, mentally and emotionally, it is important to monitor a teen’s behavior and intervene when
appropriate. The experts at Eckerd Academy, who have more than 40 years of experience helping troubled teens, suggest watching for some warning signs: • Headaches • Nervousness • Rashes • Stomachaches • Boredom • Angry outbursts • Nightmares
• Sadness or depression • Fear • Withdrawal • Initiating confrontation. Although one symptom may not be cause for concern, a pattern of these symptoms may indicate a problem. Teens who are preoccupied with problems may also become forgetful, careless and do poorly in school.
Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental
disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. Career Education Assistance For A Competitive Job Market (NAPSI)—Even with the U.S. unemployment rate high, technicians and skilled trade workers top the list of the hardest jobs to fill, according to a Manpower Group talent shortage survey. This gap in today’s competitive job market can be a great opportunity for those who are considering attending a trade or technical school over a traditional college or university. Specifically targeting this high-skilled worker need, one organization has introduced a Career Education Grant Program to provide a one-time $1,000 grant to members and their eligible dependents toward enrollment and attendance at an
accredited trade or technical school. “Higher education provides a tremendous advantage toward success,” says Paul Pevsner, M.D., President of the Alliance for Affordable Services, “but the cost of postsecondary education continues to increase. That is why it is important for Alliance to offer members assistance in achieving their educational goals, regardless of the type of school they choose to attend.” The grant program is a welcome complement to the already successful Alliance Scholarship Program. Over $1.9 million in scholarship awards has helped more than 1,200
high school graduates and college students pursue undergraduate degrees since the scholarship program’s inception in 1996. The Alliance is dedicated to helping its members live better and save more. It leverages its strength in numbers to provide access to valuable benefits and services to meet the personal, professional and health care needs of over 75,000 members nationwide. Benefit availability is dependent on the package option chosen and the member’s place of residence and may be subject to change. For more information or to join, visit www.AffordableServices.or

Hurricane Sandy has changed the physical attributes of Long Island and has unfortunately FOREVER changed the value of our homes. The Extreme Weather events Hurricane Irene of 2011 and Super Storm Sandy of 2012 only differed in magnitude due to the Moon Tide. These events will continue more often in the future according to the National Weather Center. Our Government’s and Home Owners need to rebuild and fortify the waterfront to try and reduce the devastation from future storms.
