A Message Of Unity essages of being united through their love of the game – and how no one should accept “I can’t” as a reason to give up when life presents a challenge – echoed in the auditorium at Rocky Point High School as the AMP 1 Stand Up Amputee Basketball Team spoke with Rocky Point School District’s high school and middle school students in mid-December. Thanks to all those who came out to participate in this educational program.

and Jessica Loehr, organized a volleyball tournament, appropriately named Spikes for Sandy. Student, teacher and administrative teams participated in the friendly competition, which raised nearly $1,000. Tournament founders will soon be in contact with Long Island residents who were significantly

impacted by the hurricane and will then decide how to best allocate the funds. “The project was a success in terms of learning important economic concepts,” said Debra Ferry, director of health, physical education and athletics. “It also helps the students understand their potential as members of our greater society.”

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which

the late Matt Crosson was so well known. A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of $100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations

Memorial Scholarship from the community. Matt Crosson, the beloved and highly-touted former President of the Long Island Association, a title he held for 16 years, died unexpectedly on December 23rd, 2010 from complications following a stroke. He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations. “It has been two years since Matt passed away and Daniel and I still miss him so much, as does the rest of his family, and so many others who knew and loved him, said Elaine Crosson, JD, Crosson’s wife of 17 years.

“Dan and I wanted to make this gift now to commemorate Matt’s legacy as a great advocate for public dialogue, and to provide others an opportunity to honor his memory. “Matt was an attorney not a journalist by trade, yet his appreciation for the written word and his belief in responsible journalism was fierce, so in addition to his primary role of advancing economic development for Long Island, it was his personal mission to bring to fore the most pressing current affairs issues facing this community and all of New York by engaging some of the most relevant public figures and luminaries in our country in a personal dialogue right here in our own back yard. “The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that

beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider. “This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, yearafter-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest, said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important. “This is not only a wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name, said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.

Holiday High Note Putting a twist on the familiar holiday story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the fifthgrade select chorus “High Notes” at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point School District took to the school’s stage in late December to perform their annual winter

musical A Dickens Of A Christmas. During the play, which was arranged by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse, the audience followed the life of the covetous miser Ebenezer Scrooge through both song and a Dickensian-style script. Just as in the classic tale, when visited by the ghosts

of Christmas past, present and future, Mr. Scrooge was forced to see the coldness of his humbug ways and learned to honor Christmas in his own heart. The students rehearsed for months with the help of their teacher Craig Knapp to ensure the show was a hit.

the MSG Varsity app and online at www.msgvarsity.com/mag azine the week of January 7th, provides an outlook for the season ahead in high school sports throughout the tri-state region. MSG Varsity the Magazine comes out three times a year - Fall, Winter and Spring.

Two days into 2013… so how is your year going? Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014? Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365

days in a year, with countless opportunities for derailment during each and every one of them. Odds are, complications will arise at some point. Sure, there are days when frustrations are bound to get the better of us. Weeks even. But what is life if not a journey laid out before us, with twists and turns along the way? Some choose to stay the course, while others prefer the road less traveled – it all depends upon our respective mentalities, which, as we all well know, can change moment to

moment. The New Year is just another one of those days, for better or worse. It is what you choose to make of it, to a point. Only certain things are within our control; other aspects need be left up to fate. After all, what’s that they say about “the best laid plans”? Exactly. Don’t bother making them. So maintain that sense of optimism. Don’t despair quite yet. There are precisely 363 more days left to get it right. Good luck. And Happy New Year :)

Following the ranking of Mercy Medical Center in the top 20% of hospitals in the entire state by U.S. News & World Report with a “superior” rating in patient safety - Mercy has earned high marks again. It has been ranked in the top tier for all of New York. Mercy was among 157 “Empire State” hospitals graded by The Leapfrog Group, receiving the highest grade in southwest Nassau County

as measured by the Hospital Safety ScoreSM. “This latest recognition underscores the high level of safety and quality provided at Mercy,” said Mercy’s Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Aaron E. Glatt, MD. “Our staff tirelessly deliver superior patient care.” Mercy scored among the best performing hospitals in three measures and better than

average in eight, and ranked higher for patient safety than all other hospitals in southwest Nassau County and the majority of New York State hospitals graded by The Leapfrog Group. The 375-bed facility is one of six Catholic Health Services (CHS) hospitals serving Nassau and Suffolk counties. Like all CHS member hospitals, Mercy participates in the New York State

Partnership for Patients, a quality improvement and patient safety initiative launched by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Mercy also has been awarded the Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, along with designation from the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and Bariatric

Surgery Center of Excellence® designation from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. In addition, Mercy has earned two consecutive American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Awards. “With the hospital beginning our centennial

celebration, we continue to keep the health and well-being of patients foremost,” stated Dr. Glatt. “Since 1913, Mercy has been delivering the high level of care needed by our community.” For more information on Mercy’s many programs and services, please call 516.62.MERCY or go online to: www.MercyMedicalCenter. info.

Although the district team suffered a loss to the professionals, the real winners were the hurricane victims and the school’s students, as nearly $5,000 was collected through donations and a raffle auction coordinated by the high school’s shared decision team for the event’s two causes. Robotics Club With the implementation of the new Robotics Club at Rocky Point Middle School, students have been afforded the opportunity to explore their creativity, problemsolving skills and interest in mathematics and science in new and exciting ways this year. The program, advised by teachers Dorothy Burns and Mark Moorman with the assistance of parent volunteer Dr. Chris Pinkenburg, is open to students in grades 6-8, who meet twice a week to work on their robotic prototypes. This December, the club made its inaugural debut at the Robotics League Practice Tournament at Farmingdale State

College. Breaking into two teams, the students competed against 38 other Long Island teams during four grueling rounds of competition. Through the first three rounds, the school’s Radical Robotix team held onto first place, while the Robo Eagles sat securely in fifth place. After the final round of competition, both teams finished in the top 10 and were named second- and eighth-place winners, respectively. To prepare for this contest and their first official competition in January, the students have been working with their advisers to learn about the intricacies of building a Lego robot, how to program its corresponding computer

chip, and how to successfully navigate that robot through an obstacle course to complete a series of tasks. During competitions, the teams are awarded a range of points for each of the tasks their robot completes during a two-and-a–half minute time period, along with receiving a public presentation score. This year’s robotics theme was “Senior Solutions,” for which the students needed to identify a problem that an elderly person might experience and develop a solution for it. The course that a team’s robot travels through during the competition is also beset with “senior” problems – just on a simpler scale and more directly related to the robot’s abilities.

Holiday Magic

Members of the Student Organization at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School worked with the group Holiday Magic to provide families in need with presents for the holidays. Holiday Magic, which was begun in 1990 by Port Jefferson resident Charlie Russo, is a nonprofit organization that provides holiday generosity, spirit and hope to those less fortunate. The program reaches out to approximately 4,000 Long Island children living in homeless shelters, temporary foster care,

Child Protective Services, sober houses, teen mother homes and domestic violence safe homes. “Mr. Russo’s children are graduates of the school, and his nieces and nephews are currently students,” said club adviser Sarah Ogden. “The Student Organization likes to support our local organizations, especially our Port Jefferson family.” The Student Organization, a club of 27 class officers from grades nine through 12, collected the donated gifts for 56 adopted children on December 18th.

Participants worked throughout the day to ensure that everything was wrapped, labeled, packaged and safely delivered to a truck for delivery to headquarters in Hauppauge. The club meets Tuesdays after school and has a hand in major activities throughout the year, including homecoming, graduation and a spring dodgeball event. Members also assist their fellow students with fundraising initiatives, class duties and community collections.

Students “Seal” In A Win

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School recently participated in the National History Bee, an individual academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. SEAL (Studies Enriching Academic Learning) teacher Kimberly Pelkonen organized the competition for all students. The SEAL

program offers educationally enhancing opportunities like this to students throughout the year. The qualifying Intramural Bee was held on Nov. 30 and consisted of 70 multiple-choice and two tie-breaker questions for participants to answer. The four students with the highest scores on this test, fourth-graders Lucas Welinder and Peggy Yin and fifth-graders Gavin Chambers and Giuseppina

Than, will advance to the Online Regional Qualifying Exam in January 2013. The top 120 scorers of this round from each region will continue on to the Regional Finals in New York City. The National History Bee rewards students for their existing knowledge and encourages them to learn more about history. This is the first year that the competition has been open to elementary school students.

just before the holiday break. From classics such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Feliz Navidad to a traditional Hanukkah piece, the students, along with the building’s staff members, performed the melodies in the true spirit of the holiday season.

December aimed at bringing joy to others. “Floor Wars” has become an annual tradition at the school, pinning the firstand second-floor homerooms against each other in an effort to see which floor can collect the greatest number of toys for the Town of Brookhaven Holiday Toy Drive. This year’s winner was the second floor with 290 donations. In total, Gelinas collected more than 540 toys. W.S. Mount Elementary School’s student government collected toys for NANA’s (Never Alone, Never Afraid, Inc.) House, a nonprofit organization that serves 110 families per year. The organization contains a thrift shop, gift shop and food pantry where families can use “Nana Bucks” to purchase items they need. The mission of the facility is to aggressively advocate and provide a full range of appropriate services for homeless families and their dependents. Just before the holiday break, Mount’s student government visited the facility and delivered all of the donated toys they had collected. At Ward Melville High School, students and staff members donated toys to the Marines annual Toys

for Tots program. Soliciting donations from the district’s junior high school level and central office administration building, Ward Melville was able to collect boxes full of toys for the worthy cause. As a special treat, this year students in P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s technology and family and consumer science departments created dancing puppeteer bears, crayon turkeys, wood-turned whistles and soft teddy bears for the donation effort. Setauket Elementary School students also coordinated a giving tree for families in need. The school collected many wished for items for those who are struggling this holiday season. In addition to the holiday drives, many students also visited local area senior citizen and nursing facilities to brighten the days of those residents. Nassakeag Elementary School sixthgrade orchestra and band members visited the Long Island State Veteran’s Home in Stony Brook, where they not only performed a few holiday pieces but also engaged the residents in a festive sign-a-long.

staff, and students cast their ballots for their favorite by contributing $1 to vote. All contributions were donated to the Make-AWish Foundation. First place went to Christine Villanueva’s Level II medicine class for their version of “SeedDiff.”

It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good

cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

Students and staff members of the Three Village Central School District spread holiday cheer and goodwill to others this holiday season through a variety of collection drives. Teaming up with the students at Arrowhead and Minnesauke elementary schools, the student government at R.C. Murphy Junior High School organized a holiday toy drive for the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch. This is the 25th consecutive year that Murphy has worked to bring holiday gifts to the center, which serves one of the largest and neediest populations on Long Island. The effort, spearheaded by school psychologist Dr. Jeff Pomerantz, inspired the schools to donate thousands of new and gently used toys. Working with their partnering schools, Murphy’s students stuffed a box truck with all of the donations and had them delivered to the center just in time for the holidays. In the spirit of the holidays and friendly competition, the P.J. Gelinas Junior High School student government coordinated a holiday contest in

Epilone and Administrative Coordinator for Health Careers Marie Stevens organized the event. Staff and students participated in a pumpkin decorating contest with the theme of “good health.” The finished pumpkins were displayed so voters could choose their favorite. Faculty,

Army Angels The Suffolk County Treasurer’s Office, along with Real Property, State Aid, Title Searchers, Suffolk County Clerk’s Office, Legislator’s Office, and Early Intervention supplied gifts for Salvation Army Angels and Families this year. Rebekah Gilmore

chaired the committee to oversee the project, and Crystal DeLuca assisted with the enormous project. Through the efforts of all involved, 66 individual children along with 4 families will be enjoying a little more “Christmas Spirit” this holiday.

“The outpouring of generosity in this building never ceases to amaze me. The dedicated employees at the Riverhead County Center certainly know the true meaning of sharing the Spirit of Christmas,” said Carpenter

Prize Sharing The Good Samaritan Hospital Guilds collected $6,000 from their annual holiday 50/50 raffle. Raffles were sold in the hospital’s lobby and door to door by Guild members. This year’s first place winner, Rocco Oppedisano, with Good Samaritan’s Plant Engineering Department

decided to use his share of the funds to help make a needy family’s Christmas memorable by purchasing gifts for a family identified by his church. Mr. Oppedisano is no stranger to helping others. Since the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, he has been volunteering with Evangel Church of God in

Lindenhurst, bringing supplies and doing free demolition work on victim’s homes. “I feel blessed to not only have won the Guild’s 50/50 raffle but to be able to share the winnings to bring Christmas to a family that might not have had one,” said Mr. Oppedisano.

Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, in the spirit of the season, teamed up with Long Island Aquarium to sponsor a Turkey Drive at TFCU’s Headquarters, in Hauppauge. Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director and volunteers from Long Island Cares, Inc. – Harry Chapin Food Bank were on hand to accept donations of frozen turkeys, hams and chicken, along with nonperishable food, toys and cash donations. The turkeys and other items will be delivered by Long Island Cares to households in need of

assistance during the holiday season. “Our members and friends generously supported the turkey drive co-sponsored with the Long Island Aquarium. It was gratifying to see so many big-hearted people willing to go out of their way to bring frozen turkeys to our headquarters. Long Island Cares was appreciative and thankful for the turkeys, canned food and other items, and we’re sure that all the families who will enjoy the turkeys over the holiday will be equally grateful. The food donations will surely go a long way toward making

this holiday season much brighter for the neediest within our community,” said Robert G. Allen, CEO/President TFCU. The Long Island Aquarium brought its shark truck to the site. Lots of cameras captured photos of adults and kids smiling and enjoying the experience of the shark cage. In addition, donors, who were eligible to enter a special TFCU raffle, won exciting prizes. Smiles lit up the conference room of the Stony Brook Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology almost as much as its decorated “winter wonderland” theme when the doctors, nurses and staff surprised Maria Golden, 45, a wheelchairbound cerebral palsy patient, with a Christmas party to celebrate the season and her recent

completion of radiation treatment. Golden grew up in foster homes and now lives in a group home in Ridge. Inspired by Golden’s personal triumphs living with limited mobility and other disabilities, the staff decided to surprise her with a luncheon party and lots of gifts. Among them fleece blankets, warm

socks, make up, stuffed animals, pajamas, and DVDs. Around the holiday season, the Department of Radiation Oncology holds a party that is sometimes a tribute to a patient. As a contribution, the staff donates gifts to that patient and pitches in to decorate the party room with some of the patient’s favorite holiday themes.

the students, as they took in the joy of the children when placing the gifts under the Christmas tree in the playroom. “For these kids to be able to pick a toy or two while in the midst of treatment is extra special for them and gets their mind off of treatments and having to be at the outpatient center around the holidays,” said Robert I. Parker, MD, Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital. Stony Brook Child Life specialist Lauren Sharaby said that the many toys will be distributed first within pediatric outpatient clinic at the

Cancer Center and then as needed for patients at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital. Chris Murray, Manager of Athletic Marketing at Stony Brook University, said that the athletes rallied to organize the holiday season toy drive. They collected donations from Athletics and many other University departments. They also received donations from fans who attended Stony Brook basketball games throughout the month of December. The group of athletes able to make the bus delivery represented a number of Stony Brook sports, including lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving.

Sen. Flanagan. The first was a letter to President Obama, which he asked Sen. Flanagan to deliver on his behalf. It reads, “Dear President Obama, 1 Day I want to have tea with you and I want [to] visit you.” The second document was Anthony’s proposed “Toy Law,” which conveniently included a signature line for the President to sign the proposed legislation into law. It states” Any Kids would be able to walk down to Toy-r-us & Get Free toys but need to have a toy license [sic].” Sen. Flanagan promised to put both documents in the mail to President Obama on Anthony’s behalf. Later, Anthony reflected on the visit. “It was an honor,” he said. Sen. Flanagan’s law firm conducts an annual toy drive to benefit Long Island hospitals, and Stony Brook Children’s was selected as this year’s beneficiary. In addition to Sen. Flanagan, participants in the drive included Kathleen Deegan Dickson, Esq., partner with Forchelli, Curto,

Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo & Terrana, as well as Virginia Kawochka, Administrator of the firm. On hand to greet the holiday visitors were Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.; Kenneth Kaushansky MD, MACP: Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine; L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, Vice President for Health Systems, Stony Brook Medicine, and Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital; Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Physician-inChief, Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital; and Debra Grimm MS, RN, Associate Director of Nursing and Administrator for Stony Brook Children’s. Child Life Specialists and staff of Stony Brook Children’s helped coordinate the visit, along with the Community Relations Department of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook University Hospital.

John Flanagan and members of the law firm Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo & Terrana, LLP, of Uniondale, NY, where Sen. Flanagan is of counsel, during a visit to Stony Brook Children’s on December 20th. Perhaps the biggest hit with the kids was a surprise visit by “Wolfie,” the Stony Brook University mascot. But nine-year-old Anthony Hinds-Adams of Amityville stole the show. A 4th grader at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, Anthony is the son of Michelle Hinds of Amityville. He aspires to become President of the United States, so he said he wanted to meet the Senator, pointing out that President Obama also was once a (U.S.) Senator. A group of Stony Brook University athletes set out to bring joy to pediatric patients being treated at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. So they took on a holiday season mission to “stuff” an Athletics bus with toys of all kinds and deliver the donated items directly to the kids. A few days before Christmas they delivered more than 100 toys and gifts, such as dolls, board games, lego kits, coloring sets, footballs, and a box full of lacrosse sticks. The pediatric patients, along with their siblings, beamed with delight when the unexpected delivery came. The moment was a welcome break from studies and training for

Nearly 2,200 students received a degree and became Stony Brook University’s newest alumni at the 15th annual Winter Commencement ceremony held today in the Pritchard Gymnasium located in the Intercollegiate Athletic Sports Complex. They join more than 150,000 predecessors world-wide whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. Due to the ongoing renovation of the Sports Arena, this year’s commencement was held as two events; one for students from the College of Arts and Sciences and another for all other students. Degrees were conferred upon graduates who completed their degree requirements during any one of the following semesters: Summer 2012; Fall 2012; and, Winter 2013. In total, 2,197 students received degrees, including 1,053 Bachelor degrees, 776 Masters degrees, 217 Doctoral degrees and 151 Certificate recipients. “You are graduating at an extraordinary time for our country and the world,” Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, told the graduates. “We face tremendous challenges, but also

t r e m e n d o u s opportunities; and I am convinced more and more every day that you and Stony Brook University are absolutely at the right place and the right time to make a positive difference in these difficult times.” President Stanley highlighted five personal stories of adversity and achievement at the ceremonies. He recognized Amy Pope (Psychology), 23, a resident of Long Beach, NY, who lost her home, car and all her possessions in Superstorm Sandy; Michael Tonge (Political Science), 23, of Harlem, NY, who endured the adversity of attending 12 different public schools in 12 years and went on to become the first of his seven siblings to graduate from college; Terence Coyle (Masters in Social Work), 54, from Huntington, NY, a retired FDNY member suffering from the effects of spinal injuries and multiple surgeries, who went back to school to attain the skills and training necessary to begin a second career with the goal of helping people and striving for positive social change; Kyle Essington (Business Management), 22, of Chino Hills, CA, who was the starting quarterback for the

football team this year (2012) and most of the 2011 season. Kyle’s story is one of hard work and making the most of opportunities, leading the Seawolves to consecutive Big South titles (fourth straight overall) and two appearances in the Division I Football Championship playoffs, successfully balancing academics and athletics to earn accolades in both; and also recognized Poornima Peiris (Engineering), 23, of Cutchogue, NY, a student that emigrated from Sri Lanka with her family when she was just 12 years old. Growing up on the east end, she found herself immersed in a whole new culture. Today, she is the first person in her extended family to receive a college degree. “Stony Brook graduates are among the most successful of any public university in finding employment after graduation or continuing to graduate school,” said President Stanley. “I pledge that we will work to improve your prospects even more by increasing the value of your degree as we move toward our goal of being one of the 25 best public universities in the world.”

Armed with a brand new Chevrolet C-20 panel van fully equipped with tools provided by Lowe’s and the Robert Bosch Corporation, teams of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk (HFHS) professionals and volunteers will be helping to repair homes owned by those most needy. The van and equipment were provided by Habitat for Humanity International as were 23 others donated in the region. “Through our repair initiative called Habitat Suffolk Helps™ we will make a positive impact in some of Suffolk County’s most devastated communities,” said Warren Davis, Habitat’s

Construction Director. “Working with corporate and congregational groups, in addition to the many individual volunteers who are the backbone of Habitat for Humanity, this outfitted mobile response unit will help us maximize our efforts to reach our ultimate goal of providing families a safe, habitable place to live.” “These mobile response units are an exciting new offering from Habitat for Humanity that will assist families who need help with critical home repairs,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “We are immensely grateful to all the volunteers who will work alongside these response units, and to Chevrolet, Lowe’s and Bosch for their generous donations.” Habitat

Suffolk Helps will provide families in need with critical home repairs, rehabilitations, reconstruction, and weatherization as needs determine. Chevrolet also donated five 15-passenger Express vans to Habitat for Humanity International to assist with transportation of volunteer groups into communities impacted by Sandy. Applicants are requested to e-mail HSH@habitatsuffolk.org for details. Those wishing to donate to Habitat Suffolk Helps or to volunteer are invited to visit www.habitatsuffolk.org.
