rom hearing about campus life to learning about the differences between college and high school classes, Ward Melville High School students were given a clear-cut look at what it means to be a college student in 2012-2013 during this year’s Alumni Day program. Sixty-five Ward Melville alumni, representing 39 of the nation’s colleges and universities, returned to their alma mater to speak with current students about their experiences in college thus far. The program offered the alumni a chance to address high school students through panel discussions held within individual classes and small groups. Pictured are some of the participants.

ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, welcomed Allyson Scerri, Founder and CEO and Kate DiMeglio, Vice-President of New Beginnings Community Center, a notfor-profit center founded in 2011 by Ms. Scerri after caring for her father who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in 2007. Ms. DiMeglio cares for an adult child with a brain injury. With a core mission of Hope, Healing and Understanding, New Beginnings provides comprehensive out-patient rehabilitation services
for those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), physical and cognitive disabilities and dementia. The center also serves many veterans who are suffering from TBI and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio addressed the committee and discussed plans to open an in-patient rehabilitation facility in Riverhead, “Brendan House” named in honor of Brendan Aykroyd, who died as a result of TBI suffered in an assault. The home will allow TBI victims to live independently while receiving needed care, counseling and support.
They hope to also open a facility in Western Suffolk to provide these services. “I am proud to welcome Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio to the Legislature,” Legislator Stern said. “Their remarkable accomplishment in opening New Beginnings is truly an inspiration. Brendan House will provide a higher level of service to our veterans and others suffering from TBI and PTSD. Their incredible dedication and ability to transform personal tragedy into such an outstanding facility brings pride and hope to the entire Suffolk County community.”

cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing

This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription
alternatives for lowering cholesterol. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall wellbeing of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s well-being,” said Dr. Bellows. The Learning Curve By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so
hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.
They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

5 Boro Bike Tour
Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013. The Tour will be returning to a “rush” firstcthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments. Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity -- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.” 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, first-serve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour. TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, will once again serve as title sponsor. “TD Bank is proud to continue sponsoring the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the marquee cycling event in New York,” said Chris Giamo, Regional President, TD Bank. “We feel it is important to invest in our communities, and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a fun, environmentally friendly way to see the City while experiencing the TD Bank brand.” Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Adults must register themselves individually. Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration. All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out. Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient
locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks. “Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Prospective riders can also “Ride for a Reason” and champion one of Bike New York’s 43 charity partners. “Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.1 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Based on last year’s fundraising accomplishment, we’re excited to see this year’s results from our charity partners. Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life.” Below is a full list of Bike New York’s charity partners: · Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter · American Liver Foundation · ASPCA · Big Brothers Big Sisters · Broadway Green Alliance · BronxWorks · Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation · CancerCare · Community Access · Cystic Fibrosis Foundation · dance4life · Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) · First Descents · Gilda’s Club New York City · Haiti Hydroelectric, Rotary Club Metro NYC · Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation · Hope for the Warriors

A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established
a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its
needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster Relief Fund Program of
$125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA and US Youth Soccer.
Contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020 for more information. The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good
works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333.

Hurricane Christmas Party

AFTER HOLIDAY SALE
Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas. Boys and girls in the Lindenhurst parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help one of the areas hardest hit by the Super Storm and subsequent nor’easter -
didn’t have to worry thanks to St. Joseph Hospital located in Bethpage. “We wanted to do something special for children this year,” said St. Joseph Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “Our staff collected toys and we had Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Snow Queen and Santa’s elves deliver gifts and hosted a party at the parish to brighten the kids’
holiday.” The event was held Tuesday, December 18th, and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event. Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

Did you know metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer tumors can help fuel themselves by producing androgen? Research shows that metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) tumors are capable of producing their own androgen, which can help fuel their survival.. This information could help in managing your mCRPC. The more you know about the disease, the better equipped you are to discuss it with your doctor.

classes and small groups. Leanna O’Brien, a freshman at the University of South Carolina, addressed the topic of exploring new interests while at college. “When I was at Ward Melville, I was involved with the newspaper,” she said, “but now in college, I have branched out to the radio side of reporting and am really enjoying that.” Bryn Mawr freshman Kelsey Weymouth Little added, “I joined the rugby team even though I was never involved in sports while here at Ward Melville.” Taking a question from the student-audience, Brown University freshman James Ninia drew parallels between his college and
Ward Melville experiences but also pointed out the differences. “Your professors tend to go off topic during class,” he noted, “but as they are experts in the field, it is often to share insight into their research.” He also explained how access to professors outside of the classroom is generally restricted to “office hours,” more similar to the high school students’ access to their guidance counselors than to their school’s extra-help procedure. Alumni Day has grown tremendously over the years and continues to be an eye-opening and candid event for college-bound Ward Melville students.
Given the opportunity to participate in a real photo shoot for a makeup line, students in the Professional Photography/ Digital Photography class at Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport were ready. This unique situation to participate in a photo shoot for the BEextraordinary makeup line, also known as The Michael K. Waterman Collection, served as a win-win for
the high school juniors and seniors. In addition to being “professional” photographers with makeup line models, a portion of the proceeds from sales of the product are being donated to organizations affiliated with Teenage Suicide/ Depression Awareness. ESBOCES teacher Elizabeth Grafer said, “This is a wonderful experience for the photography students.

From hearing about campus life to learning about the differences between college and high school classes, Ward Melville High School students were given a clear-cut look at what it means to be a college student in 2012-2013 during this year’s Alumni Day program. Sixty-five Ward Melville alumni, representing 39 of the nation’s colleges and universities, returned to their alma mater to speak with current students about their experiences in college thus far. The program offered the alumni a chance to address high school students through panel discussions held within individual

The Need To Develop A Retirement Plan (NAPSI)—Preparing for retirement can be a challenging process— and emerging trends are not helping matters. Fortunately, developing a retirement plan can help. That’s the word from experts who say changes in employee benefits, longer life spans, uncertainty with Social Security and Medicare and the rising cost of health care have made funding retirement
more difficult. With most of the responsibilities for financial aspects of retirement now falling squarely on the shoulders of individuals, the key, according to Insured Retirement Institute President and CEO Cathy Weatherford, is to have a comprehensive plan that addresses both retirement income and expensesincluding health care.
National Retirement Planning Week was created to remind consumers of the importance of having a plan for funding their retirement. For those needing help, a professional financial advisor can assist when creating a road map toward attaining financial security. To learn more, visit www. retireonyourterms.org.
(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what
you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each
JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Generous Donation The Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (LIHP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the generous donation of $200,000 from the Robin Hood Relief Fund. In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, The Robin Hood Foundation,
New York City’s largest organization in the fight against poverty, has reactivated the Robin Hood Relief Fund, initially created in response to the September 11th, 2001 attacks. “For 24 years, Robin Hood has been providing
housing, food and care for our neighbors in need throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November.
“The money LIHP received will greatly benefit low income families living on Long Island impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to provide repairs from water damages, including heating system repairs, remediation of mold,
sheetrock replacement and paint,” says Kevin Law, Chairman of LIHP. The Robin Hood Relief Fund is providing assistance to organizations throughout New York City and, for the first time, New Jersey, and Long Island. “LIHP is pleased to be
working with Robin Hood here on Long Island,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “We appreciate their support to help families impacted by Sandy get back into their homes.”

Drawing Blood
A Perfect Score After months of preparation and dedication to his coursework, Ward Melville High School student Harrison Li earned an honor shared by only a very select number of other students – a perfect score on his Advanced Placement Calculus BC exam. When asked what his advice would be for future BC scholars, Harrison credited his preparedness on the exam to his teacher William Bernhard’s practice exams and encouraged others to take advantage of the resources afforded to them
in class. Advanced Placement (AP) exams are based on a composite score of 1 to 5, where a 5 is equivalent to a grade of A in the corresponding college course. Harrison not only received the top score of 5 – ranking among the 15.5 percent of students to fall within this top-score category in 2012 – but in doing so, was also one of only 17 students in the world to earn every point possible on the Calculus BC exam, answering every multiple-choice question
correctly and earning full points on each of the essays in the free-response section of the exam. Harrison earned 108 out of 108. In total, 94,403 students took the AP Calculus BC exam in 2012. AP exams are written and scored by college professors from around the world and are typically designed to cover a full year of intensive, collegelevel knowledge and skills, making it very rare for a high school student to earn every point possible on the exam.
Suffolk County Legislature Minority Leader John M. Kennedy Jr. commended the generous donors who stepped forward yesterday at his Emergency Hurricane Blood Drive to re-stock area blood banks in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Blood bank levels are at a dangerous low following blood collection disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy in November. Based on his record of consistently high yield blood drives, Long Island Blood Services recently contacted Legislator Kennedy and requested that he hold an emergency blood drive to help restock area blood banks. Once again, Legislator Kennedy did not disappoint. Despite the emergency timing during the winter holidays, when many are off work and traveling, Legislator Kennedy’s Thursday blood drive at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge nevertheless yielded 64 prospective
donors screened and a total of 53 pints donated. Each donated pint can help save up to three lives. “I thank the generous donors who carved time out of their busy holiday season yesterday to help save the lives of fellow Long Islanders,” Legislator Kennedy said. “Yesterday’s successful blood drive is yet another inspiring example of the way that Suffolk County residents have pulled together to support neighbors suffering as a result of Sandy.” Including yesterday’s event, Legislator Kennedy’s 2012 blood drives yielded a total of 334 pints of blood donated to Long Island Blood Services. Since Kennedy began hosting blood drives in 2007, his efforts have generated a total of 1,338 donate pints. “I would also like to commend the magnanimous local businesses that sponsored the blood drive through donations of food for the blood donors,” said Legislator Kennedy. “My
thanks go out to Giorgio’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant of Nesconset, O Sole Mio Ristorante Pizzeria in Stony Brook, Insignia Steakhouse of Smithtown, Caffe Amici of Selden and Subway on Commack Road in Commack.” Donated blood is constantly in demand to provide vital blood transfusions to area patients undergoing a wide variety of medical procedures and treatments. After all, whole blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. A local hospital requires, on average, 70 units of fresh, frozen plasma, 30 to 40 units of single-donor platelets and 400 to 500 units of red blood cells to meet its transfusion needs each month. New York Blood Center requires over 2,000 volunteer blood donations each day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to 200 New York and New Jersey hospitals.

A PERFECT SCORE - Ward Melville High School student Harrison Li received a perfect score on his Advanced Placement Calculus BC exam. He is pictured here with teacher William Bernhard. Photo provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax
Spanning The World Do you know the answer to the following: “The former capital city of Almaty is located south of Lake Balkhash in which Asian country?” For most people this question would be a very challenging one, but for P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grader Shane McHugh, it was not only easy but also the question
that enabled him to grab the title of geography bee winner in this year’s school contest. With the answer Kazakhstan, Shane ended the contest’s tie-breaking round with seventhgrader Andrew Zhang and will now take a written qualifying test in order to advance to the state level of the National Geographic Bee.
“I really enjoy geography,” stated Shane, who describes it as one of his top subjects. “I associate the different items – landmarks, mountains – with things in everyday life, and that helps me to remember them better. I tend to have a knack for remembering small details.”

Relief Fund Donation throughout the year, including many hunger relief organizations and events, but in light of the millions of Metro New York residents who lost power and the billions of dollars of damages, Roland Foods hopes this donation will serve as a small token of support in this time of devastation. “The hurricane is not making much news anymore,” said Lisa
Kartzman, Director, Public Relations, “but Roland Foods has not forgotten the communities devastated and still in need of food especially during the holiday season.” Long Island Cares provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child
care programs, disability organizations, veteran’s services and more. The organization was founded by the late singer, songwriter, and social activist Harry Chapin, and provides many programs and services in addition to the food bank. American Roland Food Corp. is a Manhattan-based food import company, specializing in high quality specialty products. For
79 years, Roland Foods has provided customers with exceptional specialty food. Their dedication to providing quality and consistency has made them a leader among food importers and suppliers. The Roland brand is synonymous with quality for the consumer and chef alike.
ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. For additional information on deer hunting opportunities on Long Island, visit the DEC website at http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/40409. html. Stony Brook University was named the 22nd best value in public colleges and universities for instate students and the 9th best value for out-of-state students for combining “outstanding education with economic value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its top 100 rankings of public fouryear institutions. Last year, Kiplinger ranked Stony Brook as the 35th best value for in-state and 29th for out-of-state. The rankings are posted on the Kiplinger website and will appear in the February 2013 issue of Kiplinger. According to Kiplinger, Stony Brook is one of the most selective schools on the list with an admission rate of 39 percent. It is also one of only three in Kiplinger’s top 25 best values to charge an outof-state sticker price of less than $30,000 (after need-based aid, the cost for out-of-state students is $22,543). Kiplinger’s assesses quality and affordability according to a number of measurable standards including competitiveness,
graduation rates, academic support, student indebtedness at graduation, cost and financial aid. “It’s always gratifying to be recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as a best value in public education,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Stony Brook prides itself on delivering the best education at the most affordable price, which is especially important in these difficult economic times. This affordability, together with academic excellence, continues to enhance the value of a Stony Brook degree.” Stony Brook University was also highlighted for its course offerings, 68 majors and 78 minors across 200 academic programs; 98 percent of faculty members possessing either doctoral degrees or the highest degrees in their respective fields; faculty being responsible for more than 1,700 inventions and more than 500 patents; and a 92 percent retention rate for
freshman staying on for their sophomore year. “We applaud this year’s top 100 schools for their efforts to maintain academic standards while meeting the financial needs of their students,” said Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Click here for more in-depth Kiplinger rankings with sortable data by criteria such as state, tuition cost, average debt, student-tofaculty ratio, admission rate and more. The ranking of Stony Brook University as the 22nd best value public college and university for in-state students and ninth for out-of-state students in the nation is the latest in outstanding rankings conferred upon the university by independent organizations, including recent recognition by the U.S. News & World Report as being among the top 100 national universities and the top 40 public universities for 2013.

the regulations. “While we support the opportunities for our local sportsmen and women to assist in the management of our whitetail deer resource, it is important that hunters do so lawfully and safely,” ECO Captain Timothy Huss said. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge
