Nursing Award Winner
John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Nurse Kerry O’Sullivan has been awarded the Julie Cangro Award for 2012 by the Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association. The award is given annually to an Emergency Department RN from a Suffolk County hospital who exhibits the criteria of leadership, integrity, nurturer, dedication, creativity and magnanimity. O’Sullivan, RN, TNCC, ENPC, a Mather Hospital ED nurse for eight years, also received Mather’s 2012 RN Community Service Award. “I’m honored to be given this
award,” said O’Sullivan, a nurse preceptor who is mentoring the first Emergency Department nursing graduate who was accepted into Mather’s Internship Program. She also is active with Blanca’s House, a nonprofit organization of volunteer healthcare professionals who donate their time to provide free, invaluable medical treatment to children and their families who would otherwise have no access to modern health care. O’Sullivan has participated in several missions to Central America and this summer hosted an underprivileged child from Ecuador who needed surgery for a cleft palate. The child and her mother stayed at O’Sullivan’s home for six months, during which time O’Sullivan cared for the child. O’Sullivan is the second Mather Emergency Department nurse to receive the award in the
three years it has been given. Liz Devine, RN, Mather’s Emergency Department Nursing Manager, was the first recipient of the award. The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association represents 12 hospitals in Suffolk County, with more than 300 members.

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Make sure all children are immunized. PEDIATRIC IMMEDIATE CARE PROVIDES PRESERVATIVE-FREE FLU SHOTS AND NASAL SPRAY AT AT NO COST TO ALL UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE.
and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, low grade fever, muscle aches and vomiting. Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by
wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is, and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631.864.7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com
Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

Spelling To The Top
R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s top spellers took to the auditorium stage this January to compete in the school’s annual spelling bee. After 13 challenging rounds of competition, eighthgrader Kavya Tangella was named the winner of the competition after correctly spelling the word “scrutiny.” Kavya isn’t new to the competition, as she
qualified for the school bee last year as a seventhgrader. “I wasn’t as nervous this year when I went on stage,” she shared. “To prepare, I not only practiced spelling different words, but also studied the different word parts and derivatives.” As the school winner, Kavya will now advance in the competition to the Long Island Bee at Hofstra University. The first round
of this competition will be a written spelling bee, from which the top 10 percent will advance to the region’s oral round. She has also been awarded a one-year online subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica and the chance to study a foreign language of her choice online for a semester through Middlebury College.
RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR - On December 31st, the residents of St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center rang in the New Year with a celebration. The staff arranged for the residents to enjoy musical entertainment and dancing as SPELLING TO THE TOP - R.C. daughter over the years. He also told the McGraths about Stony Brook’s new children’s hospital. “Without hesitation they asked me to make certain that I provide a prominent place in their estate plan for The Cody Center and Stony Brook Children’s,” he said. “Offering a facility where we can continue to provide the most advanced care for the community’s children is an enormous undertaking – and it is one we cannot do alone,” said Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Physicianin-Chief, Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital. “The generous and thoughtful bequest from the McGrath estate will allow us to create a higher standard of children’s healthcare, and attract pediatric specialists and research funding.” “The McGraths’ bequest is a tangible expression of their concern for children’s health that will impact generations to come,” said Dexter Bailey Jr., Vice President for Advancement at Stony Brook University. The McGraths’ gift will support hiring a clinical investigator to conduct research designed to benefit patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and related developmental disabilities at The Cody
Center. The Center was founded in 2001 through a gift of $2.5 million by Matt and Debra Cody of Port Jefferson, NY, the parents of three children with autism. Fresolone recalled the McGraths as devout and caring people who touched many lives in wondrous ways. They were childhood sweethearts who met while students at St. Brigid’s Elementary School in Queens in 1937. Phillip was a trade school graduate and excelled in carpentry. Carolyn was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School and fine-tuned her skills as a secretary in a finishing school. For most of their lives, the couple lived in New Hyde Park, NY, and worked at the Nassau Community College Bookstore, where Phillip held the position of Director for several decades, and Carolyn balanced the bookstore’s accounts. Beginning with their childhood sweetheart days, they remained a devoted and loving couple for 73 years. “It’s sometimes difficult to put into words personal feelings and recollections when writing or thinking about individuals who have passed and left an impression on your life,” said Fresolone, who will remember the McGraths as “two of the most caring and loving people I have ever met.”

The estate of the late Phillip and Carolyn McGrath of Port Jefferson, NY, has bequeathed $787,712 to Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital and The Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Through the couple’s bequest, Stony Brook Children’s and The Cody Center will each receive $393,856, for a total contribution of $787,712. The couple’s gifts are being matched, respectively, by The Simons Foundation and an anonymous donor, for a total of $1.57 million; it is the largest gift to The Cody Center since its founding in 2001. The gift from the McGrath’s estate came about from the couple’s personal interest in helping the daughter of a friend, attorney Ralph Fresolone of Hauppauge, NY. “During their final years they took particular interest in my young daughter, who is on the autism spectrum,” Fresolone said. The McGraths, who had no children of their own, expressed that they wanted to do something for his daughter and asked that he recommend a charity that was dedicated to the welfare of children with disabilities. Fresolone told them about The Cody Center and the care that the nurturing physicians and staff have provided his family and

Flipping The Switch
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet…and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…
distance, shall we say. This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook. We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than
not. It’s simple human nature. The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?” In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

Mayoral Visit
On January 8th, students in Philip Giannusa’s Experiencing The Law Class at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School welcomed Port Jefferson Mayor Margot Garant for a special guest lecture. A former Port Jefferson student and athlete, Garant had an open discussion with students about her career as a lawyer, her path to becoming mayor and how the law relates to the local community. “I love to talk with the students here because I once sat in those chairs,” she began. Garant continued by defining the major types of law and how they relate to her positions as mayor and lawyer. She
described herself as a “clean hands lawyer” that always strives to seek a peaceful alternative to dispute. “Every day you have choices. Make the best decisions for yourself and figure out how to implement them,” she stated. “If you’ve made a good decision, go forward with it and never look back.” A question-and-answer segment towards the end of the lesson included discussion of the future of Port Jefferson. Garant shared with students a plan to help revitalize the town by supporting the construction of affordable housing. “I believe that growth is positive as long as it is in scale and in character with the rest of
the town,” she stated. “One of our goals is to retain the youth in the community and help them make living in Port Jefferson a possibility.” Other areas of conversation included how Port Jefferson became an incorporated village, the importance of business within the community and the village’s response during Hurricane Sandy. Garant credits her success as a professional to the foundation she received at Earl L. Vandermeulen. “My education and experiences at this school helped me to think technically and become a good decisionmaker. The skill sets that I learned here are ones that I still use every day.”

Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center. The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in
November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made. To qualify for the service, patients complete an application signed by their medical provider. According to Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook University
Practical Opportunity For the past three years, students in teacher Art Pagano’s Facilities Maintenance program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC) have had the opportunity to participate in on-thejob training at Papa John’s Pizza in Medford. This program offers students practical experience that can lead to entry-level skills in maintenance occupations. Mr. Pagano said, “We travel to Papa John’s once a week and spend about an hour performing janitorial duties. It’s valuable experience for the students to learn how to clean per industry standard. The students work as a team.”
of Mt. Carmel Church in Patchogue. The need for qualified and dependable facility workers is growing rapidly. Mr. Pagano said, “There are many students who completed this program who are now employed in places like the courts, colleges, school districts, and hospitals across Suffolk County.” Students in the Facilities Maintenance program also learn how to perform light building repair including basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical skills. They also learn about proper lawn care and the proper use of various types of lawn mowing equipment.

Bus Service Introduced
Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine, most patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy require frequent visits to the hospital. “Transportation has been an obstacle for many of our patients who live in Suffolk County,” said Dr. Hannun. “Offering free transportation to and from the Cancer Center is one more way we can
This experience is an unpaid type of “internship” as Papa John’s Pizza owner Amarpaz Singh rewards the students with free pizza. He said, “The students work very hard and make the store very clean. The teacher is on top of things and directs his students.” It’s clear from the certificates of appreciation, thank you letters, and framed photos on the walls of his establishment that Mr. Singh is very community oriented. Mr. Pagano said, “We appreciate being permitted the opportunity to come every week and clean the whole store.” Students also provide janitorial services every week at Our Lady
serve our patients and ease the burden of their treatment journey.” The idea of the transportation service was initiated by Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator, and Darlene Kenny, LCSW, Social Worker at the Cancer Center. Debbie Wunderlich, a member of the Cancer Center’s Advisory Board, arranged for the bus to be donated by We Transport in Nassau
County. The vehicle was painted by volunteers from Splashes of Hope, a non-profit agency based in Huntington, NY. Penny’s North Country Car Care in St. James, NY, donated repair services. Through an online voting co-sponsored by Warex Terminals Corporation and CITGO Petroleum Corporation and its Fueling Good program, Stony Brook University Hospital employees helped win $5,000 in free
gas for the vehicle. “This is a unique hospital-based program,” Bily said. “Obtaining and refurbishing the bus was a true community partnership in every sense of the word.” For more information, call 631.638.0913 or 631.638.0004. The six-week series will launch in Southampton, Riverhead, Huntington and Mineola in early 2013, and is expected to serve more than 100 military families on Long Island. “War takes an incredible toll on the emotional and mental health of our veterans and unfortunately they often find themselves fighting another kind of battle at home,” said David Okorn, executive director of LICF. “LICADD provides our heroes and their families with the counseling and treatment they need and deserve.” LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for M-FIT comes at the perfect time. “With a documented upswing in addiction rates among military members and their families, it is essential

Suffolk Zone 6 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday January 16, 2013
The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) to support the creation of a brand new Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program designed to educate, support, and strengthen military families. Addiction rates among active duty soldiers, returning veterans and the spouses of service men and women are several times higher than rates seen in the general population. Many of the 175,000 returning soldiers who call Long Island “home” bear the scars of war in the form of untreated mental health issues and active addiction. Major depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent in this population. Each of those 175,000 returning soldiers

Lincoln Center Concert
On January 3rd, more than 50 Port Jefferson elementary, middle and high school string students and their parents attended an evening performance of the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Attendees enjoyed the
orchestra’s premiere performance by composer Walter Braunfels as well as Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor and Beethoven’s highly acclaimed Symphony No. 7. “For those students who have never been to Lincoln Center or to a professional
orchestra concert, this trip, to hear one of the finest orchestras in the world, will surely be a night they remember for years to come,” stated Port Jefferson Director of Music and Fine Arts Michael Caravello.
Snowflakes For A Cause In light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, teachers and students at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School participated in the Sandy Hook PTA’s project of creating snowflakes to decorate the halls for the children’s return to school in January. “I felt so proud of our kids to take a tragic event that affected our students, some
personally, and produce beautiful snowflakes,” said Port Jefferson project coordinator Sarah Ogden. “It made me smile inside and out.” Involved faculty members even formed mini-lessons around the activity. Art teacher Carrie Morgan connected the creation of the snowflakes with mathematics using isosceles triangles, angle
bisectors and geometry. Similarly, Kristine Vaccaro integrated the use of calculus in teaching her students how to make 3-D snowflakes. Spanish teacher Dawn DeLeonardisMoody and social studies teacher Lauren Trelewicz also strongly supported the project. The snowflakes were shipped to Newtown, Conn. in late December.
