I Have A Dream Oratory
E PEDIATRIC URGENT CARE
choing the famous words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventh-graders took to the stage to participate in the building’s 15th Annual I Have a Dream Oratory Contest. Discussing social issues, the desire to eradicate a variety of diseases and even several personal goals they have for their futures, each of the 19 orators eloquently delivered an address about how their dreams would make for a better world.

Students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School participated in “Welcome to New York!” an interdisciplinary, interactive and innovative “in-house” field trip taught by instructors Cliff and Pat Heinze. The highly acclaimed BOCES Artsin-Education program integrates information from classroom curriculum into a physical education experience. “What’s wonderful about this program is that it is adaptable for students
in kindergarten through fifth-grade,” said Mr. Heinze. “By the second day, the younger children are able to quickly recognize symbols and key terms while the older students are able to actively hunt for information.” Many large panels of original artwork transformed the school’s gymnasium into a fun, colorful learning environment where students toured “New York State.” Students began their “excursion” at the
tourist information center where they learned key facts about the state, its landscape and its most notable features. Following the introduction, the children were able to explore over 20 tourist activity stations incorporating such information as New York’s official bug, fish, flower, bird, tree, mammal and beverage into physical activities, accompanied by theme-related music.

During lunch periods, the entire student body was encouraged to anonymously write down on a Post-it one way they were going to be more peaceful, as well as to proudly wear a green ribbon in support of the school’s effort. To further support the initiative, daily morning announcements were made about Peace Week and inspirational quotes of peace were shared aloud. The students

Elementary School. “There is so much violence that surrounds us today – from video games to reports on the news – that we often become desensitized by it all,” stated Sarah. “Through Peace Week, we wanted to give our school a chance to unplug from the chaos that exists in the world and think about how they can work to make the world a better and more peaceful place.”
inscribed approximately 250 messages of peace on a prominent display in the school’s main lobby. “Whether writing down what they wanted to do or just taking the time to think about the change they wanted to be, people in the school really made Peace Week their own,” said Rachel. “We hope to coordinate a similar effort again this year and encourage others to lead by example.” In addition to Peace Week, the school also took part in the national initiative to create paper snowflakes for Sandy Hook. As the initiative received such an overwhelming response nationwide, participating schools were asked to display their creations on the walls of their own buildings as a symbol of solidarity for the recovering Connecticut school community.

In the immortal words of John Lennon, Rocky Point High School students inspired others to “give peace a chance” when they organized a Peace Week at their school this winter. Tenth-grader Rachel Dwyer and 11th-grader Sarah Whitworth organized the concept, which sprung from a reflective essay that English teacher Jessica Rubin shared with her classes following the tragedy at Sandy Hook

Mentoring Intel Finalists Stony Brook University faculty have mentored four of the 40 high school students chosen as finalists in the prestigious 2013 Intel Science Talent Search which accounts for 10 percent of the 40 finalists announced by Intel. All four finalists participated in the Simons Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University where they worked in Stony Brook University labs with Stony Brook faculty members and graduate students. Two finalists hail from Long Island, one is from California and another from Oregon. “Stony Brook University consistently mentors and develops some of the top high school research talent in the nation, said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President, Stony Brook University. “I congratulate the four finalists on this great accomplishment; and I tip my hat to the faculty and graduate students that selflessly give of their time to take these young researchers under their wings teaching them how to do research properly. This continued success is a testament to the vast opportunities provided by Stony Brook and the quality of research, education and discovery that happens here every day. The four students and their Stony Brook University mentors are: Kevin Chen, Mission San Jose HS, Fremont, California, worked with Dr. Matthew Dawber in the Department of Physics & Astronomy on the Development of a Low-Cost Analyzer for Ferroelectric Characterization. Mayuri Sridhar, Kings Park HS, Kings Park, New York, worked with Dr. Carlos Simmerling in the Department of Chemistry on Computational Analysis of the DNA-Binding Mechanism of the p53 Tumor Suppressor and its Inactivation through the
R249S Mutation. Raghav Tripathi, Westview HS, Portland, Oregon, worked with Dr. Iwao Ojima in the Department of Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery on Design and Synthesis of Novel Fatty Acid Binding Protein Inhibitors for Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects through Increases in Endogenous Anandamide Concentrations. (Tripathi also placed sixth overall in the 2012 Siemens competition finals.) Michael Zhang, Smithtown HS East, St. James, New York, worked with Dr. Gregory Zelinsky in the Department of Psychology on RoleInducted Perspective Visual Behavior during Scene Free-Viewing. “I am especially proud that, year after year, Stony Brook University continues to be an incubator for developing young scientists, especially in the nationally critical STEM disciplines, said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “I would also like to thank the faculty mentors in our Simons Summer Research Program who worked with four out of 40, or 10 percent, of this year’s Intel finalists. In early January, it was announced that 35 of the 300 Intel semifinalists nationwide (27 of 53 from Long Island) were mentored at Stony Brook University, bringing the total to 393 semifinalists mentored by Stony Brook faculty members since 1997. Additionally, 47 Intel finalists have been mentored at Stony Brook since 1997. These four finalists will head to Washington D.C. on March 7th for a weeklong event where they will have an opportunity to compete for a share of $630,000 in awards, with the top winner receiving $100,000 from the Intel
Foundation. Students will undergo a rigorous judging process and meet with national leaders. Top winners will be announced at a black-tie gala awards ceremony at the National Building Museum on March 12th. In the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search, the overall grand prize winner Nithin Tumma, a recipient of a $100,000 scholarship, was mentored at Stony Brook University by Dr. Berhane Ghebrehiwet, a Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Stony Brook mentors have had tremendous success in guiding students to successful outcomes in high school science competitions. In addition to mentoring a number of semifinalists and finalists in both the Intel and Siemens competitions, Dr. Iwao Ojima, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, mentored Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Marinoff, the grand prize winners (team category) in the 2007 Siemens competition; and Dr. Carlos Simmerling, Department of Chemistry, mentored Ruoyi Jiang, the individual grand prize winner in the 2009 Siemens competition. Additionally, in 2001, Dr. Miriam Rafailovich, Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, mentored Siemens competition grand prize winners (team category) Shira Billet and Dora Sosnowik.

Interfaith Breakfast
On January 24th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone hosted an interfaith breakfast with religious leaders from throughout Suffolk County. The gathering served as a commemoration of the National Day of Prayer which took place on January 22nd in Washington D.C. and provided an opportunity for the County Executive to meet with Suffolk County’s religious leaders at the start of the new year. Over 25 leaders came together to fellowship with County Executive Bellone. Bellone spoke about his
economic vision for the County and the importance of establishing and cultivating relationships with religious leaders. Bellone stated, “We are fortunate to live in a County that has a diverse population. I believe that it is this diversity that makes Suffolk County a desirable place to live and thrive. You as religious leaders are an important component of that diversity as you promote inclusiveness and tolerance for all.” Bellone also invited Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner, Risco Mention-Lewis
and Lt. Bob Donohue to address the leaders and apprise them of the work of the Suffolk County Police Department in implementing strategies to break the cycle of recidivism and engaging community leaders to work collaboratively with the police department and precincts. Bellone concluded the gathering with an opportunity for questions from the clergy and promised to keep the lines of communication open with Suffolk County’s religious leaders.
CELEBRATING ELVIS - On January 22nd, residents at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center celebrated Elvis Presley’s birthday with a sock hop. Residents participated in team games focused on 1950’s trivia. The Therapeutic Recreational staff served root beer floats and dressed in bobby socks and pedal pushers for the occasion. This was a fun celebration for the residents to enjoy some good music, entertainment and reminisce about fun times.
Launching Careers Stony Brook University students conducting offcampus internships have tremendous opportunities to launch careers in their chosen fields upon graduation. Such is the case with Janice Tsang, a December 2012 graduate with a BS in Business Management, who conducted her internship as a financial reporting and analysis intern with Duke Energy Corporation, a Fortune 250 company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result of this internship, Janice has been offered a job with a Big Four public accounting firm. For her achievements, she has also been recognized by the Stony Brook University Career Center and the Stony Brook Alumni Association as the winner of the Off-Campus Internship contest. The Off-Campus Internship Contest is a competition designed to acknowledge and identify students participating in career-related off-campus internships for conducting exceptional work and achieving measurable accomplishments. The top three winners receive a cash prize from the Alumni Association, $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third, respectively. “Internships are incredibly valuable to students,” said Sherry K. Sussman, MD, ‘ 91, ‘95, President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association. “And those students, who fully appreciate that value and offer their best efforts to the employer, reflect well on Stony Brook and deserve to be rewarded.” Tsang, from Kew Gardens Hills, NY, spent her Duke Energy internship preparing SEC reports and providing expenditure reports for the controller and chief financial officer. She recalled learning new tagging programs for SEC filings and the Oracle Hyperion Financial
Management program. “Being able to see the work I have done throughout the summer come into play was definitely an eyeopener for me,” she said. Sarah Kaufmann, Director of Consolidation at Duke Energy, described Janice as a “detail oriented, focused” worker who “asked good questions and had a positive attitude.” Her work ethic ensured the “Corporate Reporting team met the second quarter reporting deadline and improved the quality of the report filed; she has an energy and enthusiasm that is unmatched by her peers,” wrote Ms. Kaufmann. As a result of this internship, Janice has secured a full-time position with PricewaterhouseCoopers beginning in July 2013. “The Career Center honors exploration and boldness,” said Alfreda James, Assistant Director, Graduate Student and Post Doc Career Services at the Stony Brook University Career Center. “By taking themselves off-campus and out of the classroom, these students toss out routines, learn to adapt to new settings, and re-evaluate their concepts of professionalism. They have taken charge of projects and developed a sense of high-level personal accountability for positive outcomes.” Elaina Anderson, from Orchard Park, NY, a senior seeking a BE in Engineering Sciences with a Minor in Business Management took second place in the internship contest. She conducted her internship in the Radiation Detection and Nuclear Science group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA, where she was taught “the fundamentals of nuclear science and granted access to state-of-the-art radiation detectors.” Misha Mehta, from West Nyack, NY, a
senior, seeking a BA in Psychology, finished third in the internship contest. She worked as an editorial intern for the Art and Science of Somatic Praxis, a journal of the U.S. Association for Body Psychotherapy, which is described as a science and art “that has developed over the last 75 years from the results of research in biology, anthropology, proxemics, ethology, neurophysiology, developmental psychology, neonatology, perinatal studies and many more disciplines.” “This contest gives us an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate student off-campus internship experiences,” said Nikki Barnett, Senior Career Counselor at the Stony Brook University Career Center. “Often, students don’t realize their peers are applying for and engaging in offcampus career-related experiences; by tracking these experiences we are increasing opportunities for Stony Brook students, and showcasing their outstanding achievements.” Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2013 Off-Campus Internship Contest. The deadline is April 15, 2013. More information can be found at The Internship Contest link.

Explorer Post Honored
On Sunday, January 27th, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, honored the Suffolk County Police Department Fourth Precinct’s Explorer Post 410 at a breakfast celebrating the Explorers both current and past and the accomplishments they have achieved at the Watermill Inn. “The Explorers exemplify admiration, compassion and have always been an integral part of our community,” said Legislator Kennedy. The Suffolk County Explorers, Post 410, has been an active post since 1975 and is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life program and is administered by
the Suffolk County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct. It is goal oriented for those individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 years of age whom would like to pursue law enforcement as a possible career choice. The breakfast was an opportunity to bring Explorer alumni together with the current troop of over 20 members. Explorer alumni from the NYPD, FDNY, EMT, correction officers, Suffolk County Police Department and various other law enforcement agencies attended the event to share their journeys from the time they were Explorers to their current positions. Although Exploring is a “learning for life” program it is also a public service

Long Island’s Got Talent
On Wednesday January 23rd, Buddy Valastro, Owner, Carlo’s Bakery and star of TLC’s hit show Cake Boss opened the doors to his Jersey City commercial bakery to a young Good Shepherd Hospice patient who’s one wish was to meet Buddy and bake him a cake! Thanks to the tireless efforts of Good Shepherd Hospice Child Life Specialist Elizabeth Olsen, Stephanie Lopez, 17, originally from El Salvador but currently residing in Centereach, was able to present her cake to Buddy and many of his talented
staff and co-workers during a very special tour of the bakery. “Stephanie is such a special girl, said Valastro. “She’s so young, but already has had to fight harder than most people do in their entire lives.” Buddy spent an hour teaching Stephanie to shape and colorize the chocolate mold into the beautiful roses we all admire as decoration on cake tops. Stephanie, an avid baker, impressed the Cake Boss crew with her talents for baking and decorating. Valastro also said “It
makes me so happy to spend time with young people like Stephanie. I want to do everything I can to help these kids and if visiting the bakery, making a cake, having a cannoli will make their day, I am more than happy to do it.” Spending the afternoon with Buddy and his gracious staff was amazing for Stephanie and her family. Generous Donation
The Metropolitan NY Porsche Club of America made a $11,000 donation to Angela’s House. The club made the donation before they started their Snowflake Rally on Sunday January 27th. About 40 drivers and navigators gathered at the Hauppauge Palace Diner on Sunday morning for the start of the 57th Snowflake Rally. This year’s 70mile, three-hour trip took drivers from Hauppauge to Southampton along
several local roads. “It’s an awesome drive and it’s an awesome challenge,” said David Leonoff, 44, president of the Metro New York Porsche club. “Winning it is not easy.” Angela’s House, this donation is very important because the money raised is used to purchase equipment, supplies and other resources for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile chronically ill or living with
a life threatening illness. Many times insurance will not cover these items and Angela’s House uses these funds to support children living at home with their parents Angela’s House is completing construction of their third home that cares for medically frail with 24 hour nursing care. This home will help to care for children that are ventilator dependent.

To celebrate this special day, a birthday celebration was held at Good Samaritan Nursing Home with her family, staff and friends. When asked what advice Sally has for the younger generations, she replied, “Live a clean life: be good to yourself and the people
around you. Be grateful for the things in your life like a loving family and beautiful friends. We must all be thankful for what we have.” Sally is blessed today to share her life with her two children, five grandchildren and five great-children and Good Samaritan Nursing Home is blessed to share it with her.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Wow. The keynote address. Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather
daunting task. Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?! ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect… Wow, what an honor to be asked. Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks. And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long
Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings. Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success. Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

From a very young age, students growing up in today’s technology-driven society are engaged in learning from a new and digital perspective. Technology like Flip cameras, iPads and videoconferencing devices enable students to connect to learning and their peers around the world in newer and faster ways than ever before. Recognizing the importance of developing the skills to utilize these growing resources, a fifthgrade technology club was formed at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School last year and has grown in popularity ever since. Currently, approximately 30 students participate in the before-school club. “Through the club, students are introduced to and explore advanced technologies, including
student-friendly programming software, Web 2.0 tools and other emerging technologies,” stated JAE technology integration specialist and club adviser Laurie Varriale. “The skills that they develop in the club have practical application across curricular areas and are most prevalent in their daily lives.” Throughout the year, the club members have the chance to create a variety of technology-related projects for schoolwide events and take part in several regional and national competitions. Most recently, the students created how-to videos for Next Vista’s Mountains of Creativity video contest. For this project, students instructed peers about a specific task and created a video using a variety of
formats. More than 150 submissions were made to the contest, and in midJanuary, JAE fifth-grader Kayla Smith was named a finalist. Leading up to the announcement of the contest winner, the entire club will have the chance to Skype with Next Vista founder Rushton Hurley to discuss their projects, gain tips for improving their work and talk about overall technological trends. In addition to this contest, the students have been videoing different school events throughout the year as well as taking photos for the school’s yearbook and to show during the grade level’s end-of-year slideshow presentation. Additional projects will be put on display during the school’s annual art and technology show on May 9th.

New Class Inducted
Having displayed the five character traits the society was founded upon, 50 Rocky Point Middle School eighth-graders were inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. During the 10th annual induction ceremony, current members, administrators and staff spoke about the work of the NJHS in years past and the hopes they have for the new inductees. “I encourage you to make small positive actions each day, as they will add up to great achievements,”
stated NJHS President Paul Picciotti. “Each of you has been nominated for membership because you exemplify the characteristics that are not only important here tonight, but also an important part of your everyday life.” During the ceremony, each of the NJHS officers spoke about the pillars that define the organization’s members and mission – scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character – and lit a candle symbolizing each of these qualities.
“Tonight we recognize you for the choices and the sacrifices that you have made,” stated Principal Dr. Scott O’Brien. “These choices have set you apart from your peers, and we are proud of you because of them. We all look forward to the great things that you will achieve in the future.” After the new inductees had recited the pledge of membership, middle school Spanish teacher Sandra Ortega-Lydic was named this year’s NJHS honorary member.
Power Of One As part of the district’s commitment to educate students about the dangers of bullying, students throughout the Three Village Central School District have been working to become bully prevention ambassadors and learning about how to stop bullying in their schools and community. As a part of this work, W.S. Mount Elementary School students received an in-depth look at this topic when “The Power of One” bullying prevention
program visited the school. During the event, which was divided into a series of skits performed by actors, the students reviewed what a bully is, what can be done to combat bullying, and how each of them possesses the power to eliminate bullying when they report incidents to an adult. By wearing different masks to symbolize the three main components to a bullying process – green for the bully, purple for the target and yellow for bystanders – the actors and students
demonstrated firsthand how bullying effects others and how important it is to do something when they witness acts of bullying. At the end of the program, the students raised their hands and recited the Power of One anti-bullying oath in unison. During class time, the students signed a poster that reiterated their commitment to create a bully-free school and community.

State Funding Awarded
The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook was awarded three separate grants recently from the New York State Council on the Arts totaling nearly $80,000. Museum President Jackie Day noted, “This support from NYSCA is especially welcome during challenging economic times. This funding for general operations, as well as for vital capital improvements, reflects NYSCA’s understanding of the needs facing cultural organizations today.” The generous funds from New York State will be used toward educational folk art programs, replacement of
heating equipment in the Visitors Center and general operating expenses, which include maintaining museum exhibitions and education programs throughout the year. Upcoming exhibitions include An Artful Life: Works from the Baker/ Pisano Collection, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Summer Cities by the Sea and the final phase of renovations to the Carriage Museum. The New York State Council on the Arts works with Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature to continue the advancement of the arts and culture throughout
New York. The Long Island Museum’s programs and exhibitions are important to the economic and education benefits that are a result of public support of arts and cultural programming, according to the Council. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, NY, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. and visited with seniors at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center to teach them about the languages they were studying. During themed cooking classes, the students taught their younger peers some key phrases in the language of the day and helped them create crepes, cannoli and churros. “This week is always a wonderful way for the students to experience the languages they are studying in the classroom in a new and hands-on way,” stated Murphy foreign language chairperson Kerri Golini. “We received such positive feedback from the cooking classes and the visit to the senior center. The junior high students really
enjoyed becoming the teacher for the afternoon and helping others develop an appreciation for the different world languages.” The week culminated in the school’s annual International Night, during which attendees sampled a variety of culinary dishes from around the world and enjoyed several live performances. The students concluded the night with a school dance. The district congratulates this year’s trivia contest winners, Emily Yuen and Carley McCulloch, as well as the students in Jessica Mottola’s classes, who won the door-decorating contest with their matadorthemed creation.
Fundraiser Held Dr. Ira Koeppel and his staff hosted a White-AThon fundraiser to benefit the Dr. Erwin J. Ernst Marine Conservation Center for the preservation of the shoreline and prevent erosion at the center. It ran from Monday, October 22nd through Thursday, December 20th. Participants received a custom fitted professional teeth whitening kit. The ten minute procedure involved having custom impressions made for bleaching trays. After two weeks, the custom trays were picked up at Dr.
Koeppel’s office, where the patient also received professional bleaching solution and instructions on at-home teeth whitening. One hundred percent of the $1,400 in donations raised will go directly to the Marine Center for repairs needed due to Super Storm Sandy. Dr. Koeppel, past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (New York Chapter), is a highly regarded Cosmetic Dentist known for creating gorgeous, healthy smiles as well as specializing in
full mouth reconstruction. The success of the WhiteA-Thons held in prior years helped raise over $125,000 for the Carol M. Echoing the famous words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventhgraders took to the stage to participate in the building’s 15th Annual I Have a Dream Oratory Contest. Discussing social issues, the desire to eradicate a variety of diseases and even several personal goals they have for their futures, each of the 19 orators eloquently delivered an address about how their dreams would make for a better world. Interspersing the speeches were several performances by the school’s chamber choir. Relating personal experience when broaching the subject of disease, orators Ashley Resnick and Abraham Hannigan spoke about how cancer and lupus have negatively impacted their lives and expressed their hopes for
these medical conditions to no longer exist in the future. Student Connor Stafford spoke about the need for the country to diversify its energy sources, a concept that became more evident to him following the Long Island gasoline crisis that arose in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Touching upon social issues, one speaker addressed her concerns about the negatives of celebrity role models, while another student spoke about his desire to become a multilingual writer. This year’s contest winners were Julia Campanella (first), Benjamin Garcia (second) and Andi Sauer (third). On the same day, the entire school celebrated Dignity Day. Students were engaged in classroom lessons on diversity and fostering a sense of dignity,

The school’s National Foreign Language Honor Society members also conducted afterschool French, Italian and Spanish cooking classes for the district’s fifth- and sixth-graders,

In the library, the school’s English as a Second Language students hosted their annual “Passports Around the World” event. Classes were invited to visit the workshop and learn about the ESL students’ native countries, as well as sample a variety of food dishes from around the world.

Named As Finalist
20 Suffolk Zone 6 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday February 6, 2013
The Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) was named a Finalist in the Social Impact category in The Inaugural Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. This will be the first event of its kind on Long Island. Winners will be
announced during a gala event at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 7th. Nominated organizations, their constituents and the Long Island business community are expected to attend. More than 130 entries were submitted for consideration in 5 categories, including Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Social Entrepreneurism, Rising Star and Social Impact.
The Long Island Housing Partnership is a Finalist in the Social Impact category. “We are so pleased to be finalists in the Social Impact Category,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “It is really an honor.” For over 25 years, LIHP has provided housing opportunities and related services to over 20,000 families, stimulating the local economy and creating jobs. In addition
to directly addressing the need for affordable housing through construction and renovation, LIHP has sought to educate government and community leaders, resulting in legislation requiring new developments to provide a percentage of affordable housing units, and influencing how the community views affordable housing. Finalists were chosen
by Long Island business professionals during preliminary judging. Members of the Awards’ Distinguished Judges selected the Imagine Awards winners from among the Finalists during final judging. “Being named a Finalist in The Long Island Imagine Awards is an important achievement,” said Ken Cerini, Founder of the Long Island Imagine Awards. “It means that
independent business executives have agreed that the nominee is worthy of recognition for their innovation, leadership and sustainability. Congratulations to all of the Finalists on their achievement.” Details about Long Island Imagine Awards and the list of Finalists in all categories are available at http://www. ceriniandassociates.com/ imagine-awards.
