Employees from various divisions and locations of Catholic Health Services (CHS) and the CHS Continuing Care Division were seeing red on February 1st, as part
Manager. “We want to encourage our employees to take care of their hearts and live healthier lifestyles.” For 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. Heart disease is still women’s No. 1 killer – it affects more women than men and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. Go Red For Women invites women to make it their mission to take charge of their heart health through simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating healthier, exercising more and maintaining a healthy weight. Women can find important health tips at www.goredforwomen.org including online tools and health assessments.

Meet & Greet Kickoff
Calling all aspiring writers and authors! Meet and mingle with members of LIAWS (Long Island Authors and Writers Society www.LIAWS. org). Members include award-winning authors, bestselling authors, industry professionals and those new to writing. Anyone interested in writing or authors interested in furthering their craft are welcome to stop by and say hello. The newly formed Long Island Authors and Writers Society is holding the open invitation networking event for current members and those wishing to join LIAWS. It will be held on Wednesday, March 20th,
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Melville Marriot, 1350 Walt Whitman Road in Melville. “This is one of the many social events we are planning for LIAWS,” says LIAWS president Tom Gahan. “The writing process can be frustrating. It’s often difficult for writers to meet those in the business face to face. Formal meetings can also make open conversation difficult. We’re here to support all levels of the written word in fiction and non-fiction.” The March 20th event is free and open to all. Attendance is not necessary to become a member. Membership applications can be downloaded from
the LIAWS website www. LIAWS.org. “March 20 at the Melville Marriot is an open-house type of event. People can come and go as they please. We chose a centralized location on Long Island at the beautiful Melville Marriott for our kickoff event,” says LIAWS vicepresident Yvonne Capitelli. We will rotate future events around Long Island to make it fair and easy for everyone. I am looking forward to meeting and working with new members.” For more about LIAWS visit www.LIAWS.org or call 631.369.0063.

Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the
next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or
two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

As a Gold Key-winning submission, Noor’s piece will now advance in the competition and be reviewed by published authors for consideration for further accolades. In addition to her Gold Key piece, Noor also received a Silver Key for a short story and an honorable mention for a flash fiction piece. Jiayi was named a Silver
Key winner for her short story “A Scarlet Tale,” and Cameron received an Honorable Mention award for her short story Death Is In The Air. These students also helped to set a new school record. With three honorees in this year’s competition, this is one of the most impressive showings Murphy has had in the national competition.

Encouraging Healthy Living The New York Islanders hockey team mascot Sparky and arena hostess Dina Tsiorvas recently encouraged students at Summit Lane Elementary School in the Levittown School District to eat well, remain active and make sound decisions in order to build healthy bodies and minds. “Everyone here today should exercise regularly
and eat the right foods in order to grow into strong and healthy adults,” Sparky told the students during the school’s annual Islanders assembly. During the assembly, the students exercised with Sparky and learned that staying committed to a healthy lifestyle is extremely important. Sparky recommended activities that can add
up to the suggested onehour-a-day activity level, such as walking the dog, dancing or riding a bike. The team’s beloved mascot also encouraged the students to always be truthful, wear a seatbelt and complete homework ahead of time. “You have to stay committed in order to be successful,” he advised.

Losing Pounds
Students enrolled in the Food Preparation/ Service program at the H.B. Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead, under the direction of Chef Joy Graf, organized the Annual Community Food Drive and collected 287 pounds of non-perishable items. The students labeled and placed boxes across the ESBOCES campus and checked them weekly during the month of January. They also created a food drive promotional ad that was read each morning during the daily announcements. On Monday, February
4th, the students delivered the 287 pounds of food to the Long Island Council of Churches (LICC) on Osborne Avenue in Riverhead. The students expressed how good it felt to help others less fortunate than themselves. Chef Graf said, “The importance of community service is an ongoing discussion that really hit home after Hurricane Sandy. We discuss the problem of hunger in many communities and the responsibility we share to help where we can.” Food Preparation students learn to mix up

the right ingredients for a successful future that includes participating in community service projects. Real work knowledge that is incorporated into the course content helps upgrade their employability skills to prepare them for jobs in fast food restaurants, schools, hospitals, catering establishments, hotels, and supermarkets. For information about free food and other items distributed by LICC visit their website: www. ncccusa.org.
“The Suffolk County Legislature is committed to helping keep the arts alive and giving recognition to our artists,” says Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick. Toward that end, Legislator Nowick created Art In The Alcove, which features a piece of sculpture in the alcove located off the lobby of the William Rogers Legislature Building at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. It is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on weekends and holidays. On exhibit now until April 30, 2013 is Kaleidoscope Phone Booth created by Kathy Seff of Patchogue. She purchased an old phone booth off of Craigslist and transformed it into a kaleidoscope phone booth by covering it with pieces of mosaic glass and applying an epoxy finish to it. She also installed a non-working phone in the booth.
Kathy is the daughter of an artisan mother and scientist father. Her mother owns Colorful Visions Art Glass Studio in Bayport where mother and daughter collaborate in creating fine custom glass designs for homes and businesses. Their work can been seen locally at such places as the BayportBlue Point Library, Grey Horse Tavern, Brickhouse Brewery and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The glasswork of Kathy Seff has been exhibited and sold throughout Long Island and in Manhattan. In 2010, she received the Strategic Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation for the Arts for her serigraphy on glass portrait series. Kathy has been a member of the Board of Directors for Women Sharing Art Inc. and the Architectural Review Board for the Village of Patchogue. She donates her graphic skills
to the Patchogue Arts Council and has done volunteer work in Nicaragua. For more information about Kathy or her glass work, please contact her at 4720203. Legislator Nowick has asked the Executive Director of the Smithtown Arts council, Allison Cruz; Fort Salonga sculptor, David Haussler; and her legislative aide, Susan E. Eckert, to coordinate this project. Any Suffolk County sculptor interested in exhibiting his/her work should call the Legislator’s district office at 631.854.3900.

With all the snow that New York received last weekend, the question on everyone’s mind is, “When does spring begin?” Spring officially arrives on March 20th but most people associate the march toward spring with other events. For baseball fans, spring begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. To others, it’s when they hear the chirping of happy birds who have returned from Florida. For New York soccer fans, the first sign of spring is the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention. With over 1,500 travel and premier teams, the LIJSL is the largest soccer league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider
technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over
your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. TraceMyID customers are covered with up to $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance and get personal fraud support in reclaiming their identities should they become victims of ID theft. More information can be found at www.tracemyID. com.

Don’t Text And Drive
(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.
If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www. distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps
251371N0220
1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. Learn more from the experts in mobile technology at LG by visiting the company’s LG Text Ed website, www. lgtexted.com. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a handsfree Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Home and Careers Community Service Club has been busy sewing up something special this winter for the children at the Long Island Children’s Hospital in Stony Brook. Working together with the help of their adviser Janet Broadhurst, the students created several boxes full of stuffed animals, assorted toys and pillows for the local patients; in fact, they were able to create enough so that each child at the hospital was able to receive
a warm and cuddly new toy in time for Valentine’s Day. “The students successfully applied the knowledge and skills they learned in their home and careers classes to put together these projects –” stated Ms. Broadhurst, “– not just cutting fabric and sewing, but cooperatively planning and working together to reach their goal. For the students, this provides a rewarding and fun service opportunity where they can make a difference in the life of a
child. Along with the giving of these handmade toys go love, warm thoughts and comfort in caring.” When putting the finishing touches on her crafty creation, Jillian Shulder commented, “I wish I could be there to see the expression on the child’s face when they receive one of our stuffed animals.” Fellow classmate Samantha Monteleone added, “It feels so great to know that my love for sewing can make another child smile and be happy.”

Special Delivery As part of their social studies curriculum, kindergarten students at Arrowhead Elementary School have been learning about the myriad of professionals who work in their community - one group being the postal workers at the local post offices. To further their lessons on this topic, East Setauket
Postmaster Frank Anzaldi visited each class to speak with the students about his important job and deputize each of the students as a junior postmaster. During their classroom lessons on the topic, the teachers guided the students through the letter-writing process - from drafting the correspondence and
learning about addresses to addressing an envelope and ultimately sorting and delivering the mail. Additionally, to begin an upcoming unit on money, the teachers spoke with the students about stamps, their importance and the various cost factors involved in mailing packages.

Kind and Safe) behavioral program. To teach the students a bit more about this program and what each of the behavioral expectations look like in a variety of school settings, the building’s PBIS team coordinated schoolwide assemblies. During the events, the team played a video that outlined each of the academic/social behavior expectation matrix items and spoke with the students about how
they can demonstrate ROCKS behavior. As a special component to the program, the students also early discovered what the mascot would be for the new program - a rabbit, which was selected by a narrow margin during a schoolwide voting contest. Setauket School extends a special thank you to parent Pat Blandino from Rubies Costume Shop for providing the life-sized ROCKS the Rabbit mascot.
Throughout the year, district students are engaged in meaningful learning opportunities geared at fostering their understanding and appreciation for world cultures. In recognition of this year’s Chinese New Year, kindergarten students at
Arrowhead Elementary School celebrated the Year of the Snake with a cultural event that involved the help of their teachers. Leading up to the program, the students learned about the Chinese culture and customs and how to correctly pronounce “Gung Hay Fat
