Advocates will be available at the Rose Caracappa Senior Citizen Center on the following dates: •Wednesday, October 17th, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Wednesday, November 28th, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Wednesday, December 19 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Suffolk County Office for the Aging is the designated Area Agency on Aging under the Older Americans Act. For over

30 years, Suffolk County Office for the Aging has administered federal, state and county programs for persons 60 years of age and older.

Specific goals for the Office are to develop a comprehensive service system designed to assist persons 60 years of age and older in maintaining maximum independence and dignity, to remove barriers to economic and personal independence, and to provide a continuum of care for the vulnerable elderly. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game.

I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

Miracle Of Volunteering

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity baseball coach Jesse Rosen, junior varsity girls volleyball coach Dinarae Camarda and 20 of their student-athletes participated in a local Miracle League baseball game on October 13th.

The students volunteered their time as BUDDY helpers to the athletes, which stands for “Because Unbelievable Dedication Deserves YOU.” The volunteers’ jobs included protecting their assigned players from balls and assisting them in batting and running the bases.

The Miracle League of Long Island's mission, to establish and sustain

baseball programs for people of all ages with disabilities, is founded on their strong belief that “everyone deserves a chance to play baseball.”

The League aims to help players develop social skills and increase selfesteem while simultaneously promoting community support and sponsorship for the league.

“After volunteering for the past two years, many students showed an earnest desire to make this an annual trip,” said Camarda. “This was an extremely positive experience and we look forward to a continued involvement with this

The most common injuries that result from serious falls are bone fractures, lacerations, or traumatic brain injuries.

The good news is that you can minimize the risk of falling by taking a few simple precautions. De-

clutter stairways or highly-traveled walking areas, install non-slip flooring, steady unstable furniture, install adequate lighting, put handrails on stairways, and make a full home assessment to identify and correct potential fall hazards.

Here are a few more simple ways you can reduce the risks of falling: • Engage in a regular exercise program to improve strength, balance and coordination; • Have a discussion with your health care provider to review your doctor prescribed and over- thecounter medications, that may cause dizziness or drowsiness; • Have an annual eye exam to check for poor

vision, a needed change in your eyeglasses prescription, or conditions like glaucoma that may limit your vision; and, • Wear shoes to prevent slipping.

5K Walk & Wheel

More than 600 friends, participants and supporters joined together for the third annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk, Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel on Sunday, October

7th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon to support adults and children with disabilities.

This noncompetitive event raised more than $87,000 and the funds raised will support the programs and service that

UCP of Suffolk provides to 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year.

“We decided to do a walk and wheel instead of a race because we wanted to include all of our program participants, friends, family and

employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities.

We are pleased that the event has grown from 100 people to more than 600 over three years. Many individuals with a disability participated in the Walk & Wheel, some of them have told me that they feel a sense of accomplishment being able to complete the course,” said Stephen H. Friedman, UCP Suffolk President and CEO. “It took me a little over an hour to go around the lake once in my wheelchair. It was like a big reunion because all of my friends from the other UCP residences were walking and wheeling too.

We had so much fun and the whole day was really great,” said John, a resident at one of UCP of Suffolk’s 30 residential homes.

Some of the wheelers had assistance from

volunteer “push buddies” in completing their two laps around Belmont Lake. Others were able to navigate the path on their own. A few people chose to run the path while others strolled. As each person completed the course, they were met by cheers from a crowd of friends waiting to welcome and congratulate them.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union returned as Presenting Sponsor and was joined by Carlin Systems Inc., Estee Lauder Companies, New York Therapy Placement and TD Bank. Special recognition and thanks go to the top five fund raising teams: Team Home Heart, Team Joey Pfundstein, Team DPK, Team Winter and Team Morlock.

Together these teams raised a combined total of over $38,000.

Stony Brook Medicine has entered the 2nd Annual National Pink Glove video competition, sponsored by MedLine Industries Inc., with a four-minute video capturing the spirit of Stony Brook physicians and staff, as well as the broader Stony Brook community, in their dedication to fighting breast cancer. On Friday, October 12th, voting opened nationwide to determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer

research.

“We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two weeks’ time.”

Last year, Medline sponsored its first online competition nationwide to

find the best Pink Glove Dance video.

The competition featured 139 videos from hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The contest quickly became a national social media phenomenon, with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., won last year’s competition with 61,054 votes.

Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in 2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, October 26th, and the winners will be announced on November 2nd.

Voting will be conducted using a contest application integrated with Facebook. Users must have a Facebook account and be logged into their account to vote.

Users may access the contest application either on Facebook, via a link on www.Facebook.com/medli nebreastcancerawareness or from the contest page that will be displayed on Pinkglovedance.com.

Entries are displayed alphabetically so voters can easily locate the entry they wish to vote for.

Stony Brook’s video is set to the tune of “You Won’t Dance Alone,” by the Best Day Ever, which was the song used in the second year of the Pink Glove Dance competition.

It features campy performances by such leaders as Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine as well as many Stony Brook University sports teams and clubs, and community supporters.

“This is all in good fun, but for serious business: defeating breast cancer,” said Dr. Hannun. “This video project is symbolic of all that we can accomplish when we join together to achieve one unifying goal.

It symbolizes the enormous

teamwork at Stony Brook Medicine in dedicating our research efforts toward finding a cure for this disease.”

Dr. Hannun in particular recognized Linda Bily for her role in coordinating the video, along with Lynn Spinnato of Spinnato Gallery, who served as director; and Lauren Kaushansky, Instructor in the Professional Education Program, Department of History, at Stony Brook University, who served as creative consultant on the project.

The Pink Glove Dance video phenomenon began three years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness. The first video generated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless videos and events around the world.

patients, and that there are four main subtypes of breast cancer, one of which has distinct similarities to ovarian cancer. Their efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer place their research at the forefront of breast cancer research.

Moms Who Kick has pledged a portion of the 2013 calendar campaign to benefit the research conducted by Drs. Lee and Shapira. Moms Who Kick is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and to support women’s health.

Their annual gala is held to celebrate breast cancer survivors and women affected by cancer.

Featuring fit and active moms, many who are breast cancer survivors, along with their bios, cancer awareness tips and tributes, the Moms Who Kick annual calendar was unveiled at the gala. The moms who are featured in the calendar also participated in a fashion show. The event also included a cocktail hour with open bar, seated dinner, dessert, raffle, door prizes, an auction and dancing.

Drs. Lee and Shapira were honored for their work in breast and ovarian cancer, and more specifically their efforts to discover and validate new biomarkers for early detection, prediction of disease course and outcome, treatment response, and risk of relapse in breast and/or ovarian cancer.

Preliminary results of their studies have been presented at a number of national and international meetings. For example, they presented data this past year at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, which showed a genetic marker embedded in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), called microRNA, indicates if a patient with ovarian cancer has a benign or cancerous tumor and that she will benefit from chemotherapy after surgery on the tumor. And at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Drs. Lee and Shapira presented data which showed they discovered a potential explanation for why breast cancer is not experienced the same way with African American and Caucasian

More Than Just Memories

The Ward Melville High School yearbook, Invictus, continues to set records in the journalistic world.

This fall, the 2012 book of memories officially raised the bar for those to follow it in two national critique competitions.

Invictus has been given an All-American Honor Rating from the National Scholastic Press Association, with marks of distinction in concept/essentials, coverage, design and photography. This is the first time in Ward Melville history that the yearbook has received this honor, which is the highest rating given to any

publication by the critique service.

Additionally, the book was named a double finalist in the NSPA’s Design of the Year Awards and received honorable mention for best info graphic and best editorial cartoon by Leigha Jarett.

The yearbook staff will be honored at the JEA/NSPA Fall Journalism Conference in San Antonio, Texas in November.

In addition to the accolades from the NSPA, the yearbook also received a Gold Medalist critique from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Individually speaking, yearbook student art director Gabi Cossens, who is currently studying communications design at FIT, placed in the Jostens/Adobe InDesign Contest with an honorable mention for end sheet design.

Student photographers Brett Pollina, Trevor Munch and Alan Wei also received individual placements (fifth place and three honorable mentions) in the Jostens Photo Contest.

What makes the last honor so impressive is that Brett, Trevor and Alan were the only students in the Northeast to place.

Digging Up Donations

A sea of supportive fans decked out in pink came out to cheer on the Ward Melville High School varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams in early October as they participated in the annual Dig Pink for Breast Cancer fundraiser.

Spearheaded by Ward Melville varsity coach Charles Fernandes five years ago, Dig Pink has sought donations from teams across Suffolk County and as of last year, has raised $109,000.

For their effort, the Ward Melville Patriots sold commemorative Dig Pink t-shirts and a wide range of tasty baked goods as well as collecting monetary donations during their October 9th match, raising a total of $740 for Dig Pink 2012. In the last five years, Ward Melville volleyball players have collected more than $5,000 for this cause.

This year’s event was held during the teams’ matches against Longwood High School, at

which both Ward Melville’s varsity and junior varsity teams were victorious.

This win helped the varsity team build upon their winning record, as they entered the match 80 with two tournament wins under their belt and a second-place finish at the highly competitive Garden State Challenge.

With students, faculty, administrators and members of the board of education present, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker presented Mount Sinai Middle School with a proclamation to honor the school’s achievement of receiving the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Award.

Mount Sinai Middle

School was one of only 269 schools nationwide that received this impressive distinction.

The award is reserved for schools that demonstrate high academic excellence or are working to close the achievement gap.

“Mount Sinai Middle School exemplifies the best in our public education system - from

its hard working students and highly qualified teachers to its strong and caring school leaders and supportive parents and community members,” said Legislator Anker.

"This is a shining example of how much can be accomplished when we all work together to provide children the best education possible.”

Continuing the school’s efforts to educate students about the dangers of bullying and sharing inappropriate personal content via the internet and texting, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School students took to the stage in October to perform the original play Choices.

The school’s Theatre Arts Company has been producing an adolescent issues play for the past 10 years, and this year’s production was written by director Robert DePersio and former Assistant Principal Tony Santana.

“Choices” touched upon two issues extremely prevalent in today’s society: bullying and texting. During the play, audiences watched an adolescent struggle with the consequences of texting an inappropriate picture and witnessed how bullying impacts the many different characters both individually and as part of a school environment.

The school’s students had a chance to see the production during the day and an encore presentation was made in the evening for parents

and community members.

Following the evening performance, school social worker Debbie Johnston made a short presentation on the ways to identify a bully, the definition of bullying, and the impact bullying has on a school environment. She also discussed strategies and interventions that students and parents can utilize to address bullying issues, as well as Gelinas’ efforts and methods to promote an atmosphere of acceptance and respect in the school.

Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees President Daniel P. Farrell recently announced the recipients of the union’s honor of Member of the Month. The two honorees were presented with proclamations and recognized at a Board of Directors meeting for their heroism in helping to save residents in danger at the John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility after a recent fire.

When the fire alarm sounded at the John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility, Ken Williams sprang into action. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and with his colleague, Brian Formhals, rushed to the scene.

caught fire and flames were shooting out of the wall. A patient was being burned. The two workers, members of the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees, put out the flames and helped evacuate the wing.

“Our two brothers responded immediately and without fear to a dangerous situation and made sure everyone was safe,” said Daniel P. Farrell, SCAME president.

“They helped save at least one life, and possibly many others.”

Ken is a custodian and has been a county Health Department employee for nine years. He is married with two children. Brian, a Maintenance Mechanic with the Department of Public Works buildings division, has been with the

county for 13 years. He is married and the father of three.

Their fate and that of hundreds of other John J. Foley workers is up in the air as the Suffolk Legislature voted to approve a deal by County Executive Steve Bellone to sell the nursing home.

The employees union is continuing to fight the sale. “We hate to think what would have happened had our members not on the job that day,” Farrell said.

“We’re just glad we were there at the right time to help,” said Formhals. “We saw the patient recently and he appears well and is walking around better than ever,” Williams added.

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, emailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving.

The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults.

First, kids text more.

Texting is their preferred mode of communication.

According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted

by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this.

Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience.

Third, teens can literally be driven to

distraction. If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road.

The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, w w w. d i s t r a c t i o n . g o v, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or handsfree, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent.

• Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.

• Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t.

• An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day.

The Steps 1. Impress upon teens

the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself.

Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment.

2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely.

Mercy Medical Center is seeking local residents to participate in an historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations.

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS3) that will enroll a diverse population of up to a half-million people across the United States and Puerto Rico to help researchers to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and

genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

On Tuesday, November 13th, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mercy will be a local enrollment location at which participants can join the study. Those taking part will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a brief survey; have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Prior to the onsite enrollment, individuals will complete an online comprehensive survey that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health. Those interested

in participating can preregister on line at: www.cps3LongIsland.org.

Participants will receive follow-up surveys to complete every few years. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from earlier American Cancer Society studies that played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations.
