EDITIONS From Us To You! Just In Time For The Busy Holiday Season

www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

Setauket Elementary School fourth- through sixth-grade students and R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninth-graders had the chance to learn about a wide range of professions during the schools’ annual career day programs. At Setauket, students rotated through 18 different stations to speak with professionals working in careers ranging from medicine and physical therapy to law enforcement and chemical engineering. The presenters shared an overview of what their typical day is like, the

training they have completed, and some key facts about their chosen field. R.C. Murphy’s career fair was set up in the school’s gymnasium and afforded students the opportunity to speak with professionals in a one-onone setting. The presenters at Murphy also encompassed a wide range of fields, including cosmetology, engineering, substance abuse counseling and finance. As the students are technically beginning their first year of high school, the school’s annual fair aims to spark

an interest in the type of career path they might be interested in pursuing in the future. “This was a really fun experience that helped me better understand some of the professions I was interested in – namely substance abuse counseling,” ninth-grader Alex Cruger said. “I had thought about exploring that field in my future, and now, because of today, I have a better understanding about the day-to-day work and the actual field.” Photo provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Long or short, furry or feathered, happy or sad - please send them to me for publication. Please be safe and warm, visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting....

Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association. “Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will

Invite A Veteran In preparation for its annual Veterans Day program, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School hosted a panel discussion with several local veterans in late October as part of its Invite A Veteran To School program. Now in its second year, the program was coordinated by the school’s student council and open to the building’s entire student body. During the event, student council members asked prepared questions to local invited veterans

and encouraged them to share information on their military backgrounds as well as why they joined the armed forces. The overarching message of the event was that the veterans saw their times of service as learning opportunities, and that they continue to have a tremendous amount of pride in their country and the freedoms Americans enjoy. With the help of the school’s technology integration specialist, members of the school’s

technology club videotaped the three panel discussions. The students would like to use the footage to create a video montage of the event in the hope of sharing the veterans’ stories during the fifth-grade Veterans Day program in November. In addition, the students plan to send their completed project to the History Channel, which sponsors the Invite A Veteran To School event annually nationwide.

Mock Election

As the nation turned its attention to the contested race for the White House this fall, students at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School were busy familiarizing themselves with the issues facing the divided country in preparation for their participation in this year’s mock election. Using a state-of-the-art online system sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative, a national civic education program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, the students had

the chance to be a part of history and vote for the next president of the United States. These young voters joined students nationwide for the vote in late October, making the YLI Mock Election the largest secure student-only mock election in the nation. During Laurie Varriale’s technology class, students studied the backgrounds and political beliefs of both President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney in order to make an informed decision about who should be

elected to the U.S. presidency. Before voting in the election, the students used the class SMART Board to examine the candidates’ stances on education, the environment, health care, jobs and the economy, taxes and transportation. President Obama won the mock election with 61% of the votes, both at Joseph A. Edgar and schools nationwide. Photos provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax

Students at Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School participated in a national mock presidential election on November 6th. Voting, organized and coordinated by high school social studies teacher Donna Levine, was done on computers in the school’s

During the late October Saturday games, the teams, along with the Rocky Point Girls Leaders Club, coordinated a raffle auction as well as a baked goods and merchandise sale to proceed the program. Not only did both teams win their

games against the tough opponent, they also collected over $5,000 for this year’s Dig Pink initiative. The school’s varsity team is coached by Cindy Krejci, the junior varsity team is coached by John Tsavos, and the Girls Leaders Club is under the direction of Kelly Calamita.

Students Annie GatesRoss, Shelter Island UFSD; Aaron Johnson, Shelter Island UFSD; Nicole Juliano, Miller Place UFSD, and Lauren Rozmus, ShorehamWading River CSD from Chef Tom Hashagen’s Eastern Suffolk BOCES Culinary Arts program at the H.B. Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC)

in Riverhead prepared and served 20 gallons of homemade white turkey chili to over 400 runners at the Shelter Island 5K on October 20th. The 5K race benefitted the North Fork Breast Health Coalition. Chef Hashagen said, “The students from my class have been participating in this event for more than 13 years.

We’ve heard people refer to the 5K as the “Chili Race.” It’s a wonderful community event that brings people to Shelter Island. It’s very rewarding to me and the students to see the crowds’ reaction to what the students created, especially when they say how good the chili tastes!”

Food Drive To Be Held To aid residents needing food and warmth as a result of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, Legislator Sarah Anker will be accepting nonperishable food items, water, bottled drinks, personal care items, pet food, household cleaning supplies, new blankets, hats, gloves scarves and socks beginning Tuesday, November 13th. Donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Legislator’s office at 620 Route 25A,

Suite B, in Mount Sinai. Collected items will be distributed by Long Island Cares to local food pantries and community service organizations in need. No glass containers or perishable foods will be accepted. “The devastating results of the hurricane continues to effect all residents of Suffolk County, and so many community members still have little to no access to food or warmth,” said Legislator Anker. “It is times like these that we must pull

together and help one another.” Long Island Cares provides emergency food where and when it is needed, sponsors programs that help families achieve selfsufficiency, and educates the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. The Earl L. Vandermeulen boys varsity soccer team has won the NYSPHSAA Southeast Regional Championship. The defending state champions are undefeated

this season (19-0). Prior to this victory, the team won the Suffolk County and Long Island Class C championships. They will continue on to the Class C semifinals on Saturday, November 17th

against Williamson in Middletown, N.Y. The winner will play the following day in Middletown for the state championship.

Hurricane Relief

With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer

clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members

have suffered a tremendous amount of hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”

The Rocky Point School District’s students took time to give thanks to those who have served in the armed forces during several in-school Veterans Day ceremonies this month. Each program began with members of the Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 Color Guard presenting flags and a collective recital of the Pledge of Allegiance. Speaking with the audience about the history of Veterans Day, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School Principal Linda Towlen explained how the national holiday was called Armistice Day when first celebrated in 1918. Noting the significance it continues to hold in the nation’s history, she went on to say, “Every year on November 11th, we give thanks for peace, observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m., and remember those who fought and died

during times of war.” Throughout the school’s event, members of the JAE select chorus, High Notes, performed several patriotic songs; the student council shared personal essays; and the school’s Technology Club showcased their History From Our Heroes video. At the conclusion of the event, after introducing themselves and explaining which branch of the military they served in and when, the veterans in attendance were presented with a special letter and commemorative sticker. Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School second-graders had the chance to pay tribute to more than 20 local veterans who attended their school’s ceremony. Representatives from each class recited a special letter to the veterans, presented them with a paper medal symbolizing

their appreciation and sang a song of gratitude. The audience was introduced to different pieces of equipment and resources used by members of the armed forces, including two kinds of helmets and three types of fatigue jackets. At the high school, guest speakers addressed the students about their time in the service during the Vietnam War. Dan Murphy, a Vietnam veteran, spoke not only about his own service but also regarding his son Mike’s time in the military and how Mike Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in Afghanistan. VFW Post 6249 Commander Joe Cognitore also spoke about his service in Vietnam and work on the Cambodian border.

Scarecrows Inspire Donations Not even Superstorm Sandy could dampen the fundraising spirits of the fourth-grade students at Joseph A. On Wednesday, November 14th, members of the student council at the Port Jefferson Middle School hosted their annual Senior Citizens’ Luncheon for members of the Port Jefferson Senior Center. Prior to the event, the sixth- through eighthgrade representatives held group-planning discussions and brainstormed ideas for setup and decorations with their club advisor Allison Giannusa. “We talk with them about everyday life, serve food to them and do everything possible to

make sure that they have a good time,” said sixthgrade student Sarah Hull. The food, which consisted of a full Thanksgiving meal, was catered and paid for by student council fundraisers earlier in the year. Parents also contributed to the event by providing desserts. While dining, guests were treated to musical performances by sixthgrade student Annalisa Welinder and eighthgraders Anita Rescia and Elisa Ueno. Also in attendance to greet the seniors were middle school principal Antonio

and infant clothing to display in the school’s hallways. During the project, the fourth-grade classes spoke about the importance of helping out those in need and, specifically, the work done by UNICEF to help children around the world. After the students constructed their scarecrows, the entire

school had the chance to vote for their favorite creation. To vote, the students were asked to drop their loose change in a UNICEF box located in front of their choice scarecrow. Throughout the daylong drive, the school collected a record total of $870.05 for this worthy organization.

Hurricane Sandy left a wake of destruction in Suffolk County and the Boy Scouts of America mobilized to provide support for the recovery effort. Suffolk County Council, BSA, holds a charter from the Boy Scouts of America National Council and is responsible for delivering the Scouting program to Suffolk County communities. The Boy Scouts of America motto is “Be Prepared,” and Suffolk County Council was ready to provide support and service in a number of ways. Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, the Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp opened to the community to provide hot

showers, hot coffee, and bags of ice. Even though the camp sustained significant tree damage, none of the camp structures suffered serious harm. Providing showers, coffee, and ice was the first of a number of services provided by the Boy Scouts. A few days after the hurricane struck, National Grid contacted the Council to ask if Baiting Hollow Scout Camp could house and feed out-ofstate utility workers. Even though this request was unexpected, Council staff and volunteers rallied and, within 24 hours, provided sleeping quarters and meal preparation for up to two hundred emergency workers. Cots, blankets, linens, towels,

and other sundries were obtained and assembled in every heated building at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. A hearty breakfast has been provided before dawn every day by volunteers and staff, enabling the work crews to be fed and on their job sites at the break of light. The Council also organized a clothing drive to assist members of the community who lost possessions in the hurricane. A large quantity of clothing has been collected both at the Council Service Center in Medford and at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It is not too late to contribute! New or used clothing in good condition can be dropped off at the Council Service Center, 7 Scouting

Boulevard in Medford, or at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, 1774 Sound Avenue in Calverton. While the Council organized these largescale relief efforts, local districts and units organized smaller efforts targeting the hardest hit c o m m u n i t i e s , volunteering their time to help their neighbors in any way they can. Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews have been active in helping residents with skills learned in the Scouting program. As the overall relief effort continues to unfold, additional requests have been made of the Boy Scouts and the response has been in line with the Scout Slogan - “Do A

Good Turn Daily.” Governmental agencies such as the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management have asked Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to assist with displaced families, families that have borne the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. Once again, the Boy Scouts jumped in with a “can-do” attitude and found a way to provide up to 18 families with lodging, breakfast, and dinner at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for the foreseeable future. A sense of community and a strong desire to put the needs of others before ones own has driven the Boy Scouts response. Council staff and volunteers have been working around the clock

to help emergency workers, displaced families, those with lost possessions, and those with basic needs like a hot shower or a bag of ice. FEMA, working through National Grid and the Suffolk County government, has provided the needed funding for the facilities, equipment, food, laundry services, and other essentials, and for that we are grateful. Most of all, though, we are thankful and proud of the volunteers who have worked every day to help our neighbors, using vacation time or working the volunteer effort like a second job, going to work during the day and caring for those in need at night. We couldn’t be more proud of our volunteers!

graduates from each of Suffolk’s three campuses, each academic year. Nominees for the scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 and, in addition to superior academic achievement, must demonstrate contributions to their campus and communities through activities and student leadership. Scholarship finalists will be recommended by Dr. McKay and selected by Stony Brook’s scholarship committee. The agreement also provides the scholars with counseling and

advising support as they transition from Suffolk to Stony Brook. Dr. McKay said the agreement is a continuation of his “Stay on Long Island” initiative. “I am pleased to expand the ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative through our new partnership with Stony Brook University. The ‘Stay On Long Island’ program is one I have been working on closely with Presidents from Long Island’s fouryear institutions to ensure select graduating scholars from Suffolk receive scholarships to attend colleges and universities

right here in our community. Through these scholarships, students now have every chance for continued academic success and an increased likelihood that they will continue to live and work on Long Island. The ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative is a way of cultivating the intellectual capital of those who have the best potential for transforming our region,” said Dr. McKay. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University stated, “Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College have a

long-standing history, and an on-going commitment, to serve the educational needs and aspirations of Suffolk County residents. Each year more than 600 students from Suffolk County Community College enroll at Stony Brook, one of the country's leading research universities and a member of the AAU. Respite Grant Received Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $21,000 grant from the KnappSwezey Foundation in Patchogue. The grant will go towards funding for Pal-O-Mine’s Respite Program. Pal-O-Mine operates multiple therapeutic riding and educational programs, such as the Respite Program, for individuals with disabilities including children and adults with mental or physical special needs. The Respite Program

provides students with a structured learning environment during scheduled school breaks. Students are able to engage in stimulating activities including horse riding, horse care and arts and crafts while improving upon writing, reading and listening skills. Alongside these benefits for students, the program gives parents and caretakers the opportunity to continue their work schedule and regular daily tasks. Pal-O-Mine

understands the importance to offer families an organized, exciting and positive curriculum for children during winter and spring break, summer vacation and major holidays. For more information about Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s Respite Program or donating to Pal-O-Mine through either donations or services, please contact Pal-O-Mine at 631.348.1389 or visit www.pal-o-mine.org.

Helping Sandy’s Victims Hicks Nurseries, in partnership with Long Island Cares, is a distribution point for food and donations for storm victims. From now through the end of the year, the nursery will be collecting items to help Long Islanders in need. Items in particular need are bottled water, pouch drinks, new blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, underwear, household cleaners, personal care items, pet food and nonperishable food. These items can be brought to the nursery,

which is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury, seven days a week for fast delivery to Long Island Cares for redistribution. Store hours are Saturday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., open late on Fridays until 8 p.m. “For six generations, Hicks Nurseries and my family have been part of the Long Island community and the one thing that has been continuous over time is the will of Long Islanders to help each other get their lives back to normal

in the wake of trying events,” says Stephen Hicks, president of Hicks Nurseries. “This recovery will be no different. Thank you for helping us to help.” Hicks Nurseries, Long Island’s largest garden nursery (established by the Hicks family in 1853), is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury; 5 1 6 . 3 3 4 . 0 0 6 6 ; www.hicksnurseries.com; http://www.facebook.com/ hicksnurseries The nursery is handicap accessible throughout.

through December 24th, and can be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera Bread on Long Island. “These donations will help Island Harvest provide warm, nutritious meals to local families in need throughout the holidays.”

Also, guests who wish to make a monetary contribution to help support Island Harvest’s efforts in the aftermath of Sandy, can do so in amounts of $1 or more at the register.

Holiday Help Island Harvest is partnering with Panera Bread to help those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Long Islanders who are hungry. With the holidays almost upon us, Panera Bread will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest’s annual Turkey & Trimmings Collection

Campaign, a lifeline for many families in need in the aftermath of Sandy and for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table. To lend a helping hand this holiday season, Panera Bread is asking its neighbors to donate frozen turkeys,

supermarket turkey coupons and nonperishable food items at any of its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes on or before December 24th. According to Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest, nearly 300,000 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children struggle

with food insecurity. That’s 1 out of every 10 Long Islanders and with the recent devastation those numbers have grown. “Donations of frozen turkeys, turkey coupons and non-perishable food items will be welcomed at our bakery-cafes in Nassau and Suffolk now
