The Ward Melville High School Players will present the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods on December 6th, 7th and 8th. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, district students and children. For tickets, please contact 631.730.4357. This year’s production, which is based on the book by James Lapine, involves the musical talents of 57 student-actors, 20 crew members and a 60-piece orchestra. The play intertwines the plots of several famous fairy tales – Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella – and showcases how the characters’ lives change as a result of the chance wishes they are granted. Sugar Cane People in ancient India made the first candy with sugar cane.

Into The Woods
I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense. It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation. She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained
in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite clichĂŠ and widely used. Except‌ I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by yearâ€? debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,
what did you just say?â€? reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes‌play it by year‌get it?â€? Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

FRESH CUT CHRISTMAS TREES FROM CANADA and rehabilitation for the dogs and cats in their care. Culinary Arts students sold homemade dog biscuits to raise donations for the organization. The students collected more than $500. Animal Science Teacher Lori Beckmann said, “In addition to the monetary donation, the students collected many items on the Forgotten Friends “wish list” like food, toys, and blankets.” The ESBOCES Riverhead campus school store and the Canine Careers program are also supporting the Riverhead Animal Shelter. Ms. Beckmann said, “The shelters are full of animals that needed to be rescued from flooding and cold weather so we thought that would be a great place to start.”

The costumed canines included a banana, a ballerina, several devil dogs (not the kind you can eat), an Angry Bird, a lady bug, an angel, a penguin, a Santa, a polka dotted dog, a lobster, and a headless horseman. There was also a ferret wearing an antenna. This parade was more than a procession of costumed animals and preschoolers. It was a fundraiser for Forgotten Friends of Long Island (FFLI) a 501c3 non-profit volunteer organization. FFLI rescues companion animals left in municipal shelters for an extended period of time and overlooked by both the general public and other rescue groups. FFLI has no paid staff. In October, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Animal Science students at the Harry B. Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead planned to have a Pet Parade. It was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy. Their spirits would not be dampened. The Audio Production students were ready to rock, the parade float was ready to roll, and 15 dogs were ready to embarrass themselves in silly costumes. On November 20th, the ESBOCES WCTC campus treated themselves to a Thanksgiving Pet Parade. The animals and their handlers were ready. Fifteen dogs of various breeds paraded across the campus in ridiculous costumes but it was worth it to be top dog and win homemade dog biscuits.

The Three Village Central School District takes a proactive approach when it comes to educating students about how to remain safe, both inside the schools and out in the community. As many district students are transported to and from school on a school bus, the district’s elementary
schools once again participated in the Safety Sally bus safety program through BOCES. Each fall, students are instructed on the proper ways to approach their school bus, safety measures to take when crossing in front of a bus, key behaviors to observe while riding, and what to

Rocky Point School District students extended a helping hand to those in need this holiday season when the schools coordinated a variety of holiday giving drives. This year, not only did many of the drives benefit those locally who were in need of assistance around Thanksgiving, but also those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Rocky Point Middle School students rallied together to collect a wide variety of nonperishable food and supply items for their Thanksgiving food drive. From boxes of stuffing to tasty vegetables, the students collected more than 850 items during the event. As a result of their o v e r w h e l m i n g determination, the
homerooms (one per grade level) that collected the highest number of donations were treated to a bagel breakfast by the school’s guidance department, who helped coordinate the effort. Congratulations to the students in Jessica Cox’s, Grant Connelly’s, and Sandra Ortega-Lydic’s classes for winning for their grade level and to

Local residents were invited to visit the food pantry prior to the Thanksgiving holiday to gather any items they needed, and the remaining pieces were donated to a local food bank to help with Sandy relief efforts. Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School and Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School also coordinated food drives during the Thanksgiving holiday and Rocky Point High School worked on a Sandy relief project. At FJC, the school’s counselor, Jamie Adamski, worked with the secondgrade service squad to sort, box and organize the donations collected by the building’s students and staff. The items were packaged in time for Thanksgiving and donated to approximately 15 local families.

Videos Commended Ward Melville High School student-artists continue to receive praise and commendation in some of the nation’s premier art competitions. Annually, the Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI) sponsors a fall photography competition for students and teachers, which calls for submissions in a variety of categories in addition to photography such as video and computer imaging. As a result of his outstanding work, Ward Melville senior Nicholas Fernandez placed first in the contest’s short film video category for his one-and-a-half-minute feature, Félagslega Grímu,
which is a self-portrait assignment completed in video production class that took almost the entire quarter to complete and can be seen on Vimeo on the Ward Melville High School page. Junior Trevor Munch received an honorable mention for his film Continuity of Parks. Nicholas’ piece, which is based on a Julio Cortazar short story. His piece runs about a minute long and is a narrated black and white film. This year’s ATPI contest drew more than 6,100 entries from around the country, including Texas, Arizona, California, Kansas, Oklahoma and New York.
VIDEOS COMMENDED - Ward Melville High School senior Nicholas Fernandez was named the first place winner in the short film video category of the 2012 ATPI Contest. He is pictured here with art teacher Stefanie DiLorenzo.

furniture items and small household appliances. The collected items have been and will continue to be distributed to any community member, both locally and neighboring, needing assistance as a result of the hurricane. R.C. Murphy Junior High School student government, leaders club and National Junior Honor Society coordinated a fun-filled evening event for students. With a donation of $5 and a nonperishable food or toiletry item, the students gained entry into the dance and game night. All of the proceeds, which totaled $900 and a significant amount of food items, directly benefited the school’s food pantry and community outreach program that are coordinated through the guidance office. The guidance office also put together and distributed Thanksgiving food baskets for local families. At the elementary level, each of the schools also worked to help those in need by coordinating food and clothing drives during the fall. Each year, the students and staff members of the Three Village Central School District work to bring cheer to their community members in need, especially during the holiday season. This year was no different and in fact, many schools worked on collection drives to not only assist their fellow community members at Thanksgiving time, but also those affected by the recent superstorm Sandy. P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s student government once again coordinated a battle of the cans project to benefit the Town of Brookhaven. Pinning homeroom against homeroom, the students worked to collect nonperishable can donations in their homeroom classes and charted the results on large boards in the cafeteria. In total, the school collected 1,296 items of food for the Town, who will distribute the food to families in need this holiday and those affected by Sandy. The school’s staff members also coordinated a drive for Sandy relief. Through the help of school psychologist Michelle Richards and special education teacher Casey Giles, the building’s staff members donated an abundance of home items, including bedding, dishes, clothing,

After demonstrating a high level of academic commitment and athletic talent, eight Rocky Point High School seniors have been recruited to attend and participate in the athletic programs at some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. This fall, these students signed National Letters of Intent with these institutions of higher learning and next year will be afforded the chance to demonstrate their athletic abilities on these schools’ sporting teams. Surrounded by their families and coaches, the students put pen to paper in November and participated in the school’s 2012 fall NCAA

your Spouse. Be Thankful! A Home and Possessions can be replaced. L Hug O AyourNChildren M OandDKiss IFIC A TIO N ? Hurricane Sandy has changed the physical attributes of Long Island and has unfortunately FOREVER changed the value of our homes. The Extreme Weather events Hurricane Irene of 2011 and Super Storm Sandy of 2012 only differed in magnitude due to the Moon Tide. These events will continue more often in the future according to the National Weather Center. Our Government’s and Home Owners need to rebuild and fortify the waterfront to try and reduce the devastation from future storms.
