FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS - The Hello Taiwan Rocks! fundraising concert won the support of Comptroller, John Liu, newly elected Congresswoman Grace Meng, newly elected Assemblyman Ron Kim and New York City Councilmember, Peter Koo. The combined effort of the Taiwanese community, volunteers, sponsors and AsianInNY, the concert raised $10,000 for the Breezy Point victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Annual Stars Gala & Casino Night on Friday, November 16th at the Woodbury Country Club. DDI not only raised funds for the children and adults it serves, but for its employees as well. In light of recent events with Hurricane Sandy, DDI established a special relief fund to benefit any employee who lost their home or are facing extreme economic hardship due to storm. “DDI is very grateful to our Foundation Board of Directors, corporations, parents, teachers, staff, friends and volunteers who helped make this event a special and memorable evening,” stated John Lessard, DDI Executive Director. Rocky Point High School will host a unique basketball game on Friday, December 14th at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The game will pit members of the school’s staff against the AMP 1 basketball team, which is comprised of amputee players from around the country, all in the hopes of collecting supplies and raising funds for Sandy victims. For their admission to the exciting game, attendees are asked to make a $5 monetary donation as well as the gift of a nonperishable canned good or household cleaning supply. Following the game, there will be a Chinese auction, organized by the Booster Club. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support character education programs at the high school.
designated to the DDI Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which has been established to help a number of our staff members who faced catastrophic losses due to Hurricane Sandy. Their homes were significantly damaged or destroyed, their cars were ruined, and their lives were turned upside down. Yet, despite the adversity, each and every one of our staff members collectively insured that all of the children and adults with disabilities entrusted to our care were kept safe and out of harm's way. We are very grateful for their dedication and hope to be able to offer any assistance that we can.” The annual Gala featured two special award presentations. The 2012 Stars Advocacy Award was presented to Julian Fisher of Gallagher Benefit Services. Over the past decade, Julian, along with his wife, June, has worked tirelessly to raise funds in
support of the many programs and services DDI provides to children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. DDI was also pleased to honor students who have been active participants in the school age vocational services in the Children’s Day Program. For three or more years, these students have participated in community based volunteer activities, which are meant to help the students prepare for future employment opportunities, increased socialization experiences, and the ability to lead productive and satisfying lives in adulthood. DDI was proud to honor these students, as well as the Transition/Vocational Coordinator, Doris Frisenda, who has worked tirelessly for over 17 years to provide this opportunity for the students enrolled in DDI’s Children’s Day Program.

The Road More Traveled By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to‌ oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist. And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad. To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back‌let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.
But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving. Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame. There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless! Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off. Umm‌ drive much? Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with
their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way? Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you. We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum. Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time‌ oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,â€? believe it. Sincerely, Your Fellow Driver

We hope to share the value and strength we find as a family-run business and believe Little Flower Children and Family Services demonstrates this daily through the care of children and those in need.” King Kullen has raised over $3 million for Little Flower since the inaugural golf outing in 1983. Further, members of the Cullen family are personally involved and have actively supported many programs as well as the construction of the eight cottages that provide a residential setting for

Eight Stony Brook University scholars have been elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and will be honored for their contributions to science and engineering at the Fellows Forum held during the AAAS Annual Meeting on February 16th, 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts. Stony Brook’s eight recipients are among 702 newly elected members who will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette pin as a symbol of their d i s t i n g u i s h e d accomplishments. Among the new AAAS Fellows are Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Vitaly Citovsky, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology; Walter Eanes, Professor and Chair, Department of Ecology and Evolution; Lev
Ginzburg, Professor, Department of Ecology and Evolution; Rolf Sternglanz, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology; Kenneth Takeuchi, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of Chemistry; Jin Wang, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry; and Stanislaus Wong, Professor, Department of Chemistry. This class of honorees joins 28 other Stony Brook University faculty members who have been recognized with this honor. Election as an AAAS Fellow is bestowed upon members by their peers. “This year’s election of eight distinguished scholars, many of whom are internationally recognized, into the ranks of AAAS Fellows is evidence of our faculty’s scholarship and vast contributions to their
respective fields,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Their meritorious work not only serves the University, but it serves society by pushing the frontiers of scientific advancement, research and discovery in engineering and the sciences.” The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer. Each steering group then reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which votes on the aggregate list

Free Vaccines Available Catholic Health Services (CHS), in collaboration with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, MD, provided free tetanus and flu vaccines recently to emergency responders as well as to residents in hurricane ravaged Island Park. Catholic Health Services free community outreach program, Healthy Sundays, supported by nursing staff from member hospitals St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, administered the injections to ensure the safety and protection of individuals who continue to work in areas hardest hit by the storm. Dozens of CHS employees, many of whom were impacted by
the hurricane themselves, volunteered their time and skill to provide the tetanus and flu vaccines. “In the wake of the devastation following Hurricane Sandy, we remained focused on ensuring the health and wellness of individuals in the communities impacted by this storm,” said Joel Yohai, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical Affairs, Chief Medical Officer, CHS. “Catholic Health Services couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with County Executive Mangano and Dr. Eisenstein in delivering critically important tetanus immunizations to Island Park emergency responders. As they continue to work to restore these neighborhoods, they can do so knowing they are protected against this serious bacterial infection.”
“Protecting the health and safety of our emergency responders is a priority,” said County Executive Mangano. “This partnership with Catholic Health Services assured that our emergency responders who are performing cleanup work as result of super storm Sandy receive the necessary protection.” Additional information on tetanus is available on the New York State Department of Health w e b s i t e : http://www.health.ny.gov/ diseases/communicable/te tanus/fact_sheet.htm

Under The Microscope
Students in Jonathan Maletta’s AP environmental class at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School are continuing the work of an ongoing water quality investigation. The study, which began approximately a year and a half ago, actively monitors potentially harmful phytoplankton species that have been collected from the Port Jefferson Harbor. “Not only does this lesson tie in with the curriculum, but it also allows us to make use of our close proximity to the harbor,” said Maletta. “We have been working with the local government, HELPING FURRY FRIENDS - Pictured here is Emily with basket raffle winner which helps us to quantify Amber Sanchez. our data using advanced
technology that we do not have here at the school.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration P h y t o p l a n k t o n Monitoring Network (NOAA PMN), part of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, worked with students on their most recent investigation of water from the Port Jefferson Village Pier. Students analyzed the sample and identified a potentially harmful species of phytoplankton that when in a “bloom” status can produce enough toxins to result in shellfish poisoning. They observed the harmful species of diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia, under a
new compound microscope that allows for better visualization of phytoplankton and better communication with NOAA PMN due to the ability to now take and send images. “My students have clearly identified a Pseudo-nitzschia bloom of 2,500,000 cells per liter; more than 1 million signifies a bloom in the harbor,” stated Maletta. “However, the toxin production was not elevated enough to adversely impact finfish or shellfish populations.” In the right conditions, a bloom could lead to amnesic shellfish poisoning.

COMING EVENTS AROUND TOWN
At 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, local residents Dan Turturro (St. James) and Byron Lane (Stony Brook) will start their day as many cannot imagine. They plan to run for 12 hours straight - and reach a combined total of 125 miles - running side by side on treadmills at Energy Interactive Fitness Center on Route 25A in St. James. Their goal: to raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen, a tristate non-profit organization that helps children and their families cope with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. While most people even seasoned marathoners - could not conceive of running for more than one hour on a “dreadmill,” the pair are looking forward to the challenge. “Think of the way your life is going right now.” Lane offers. “Pretend that tomorrow, you found out that your 5 or 10 or 15 year old child was diagnosed with some terrible life-threatening disease. Your life would change drastically and forever. Friends of Karen picks up the slack so that families in this situation don’t have to worry about the Rat Race—all of the little things that can drain precious time and energy—so they can focus solely on their child and their family. Running on treadmills symbolizes their race to try to get

Runners To Raise Funds everything done all at once. During our fundraiser, we’ll do all the running around for you, just like Friends of Karen does for their sponsored families.” At the end of the run, scheduled for 5 p.m., the gentlemen will celebrate their accomplishment by sitting down. They will also be serving food and drinks to supporters and donors and will be drawing the winning raffle tickets for prizes generously donated to the cause from local merchants and from the owners of Energy Interactive Fitness. Lane, one of the most decorated ultrarunners in the country, started his running career 37 years ago. Sponsored by The Runners' Edge (Farmingdale) and Hammer Nutrition, he has won 47 ultramarathon races of 50 km or longer, is a three-time Age Group National Champion, and, in 2008, was the National Champion in the 24-hour run. Turturro started running longer than marathon distances this past year, having done a 31-miler and a 50-miler, and regularly runs five times per week. This will be Dan’s longest run ever. The two men met at Energy Interactive Fitness last year and Byron has served as a very encouraging mentor to Dan. The two brainstormed a
fundraising idea to bring some attention to a deserving charity and were directed to Friends of Karen by Energy Fitness manager Michael Fox. “We are pleased to be able to help support this important organization,” said 55 year-old Turturro. “No one is prepared for a life-threatening illness to strike their child,” added Lane. “People going through this type of family crisis have enough to worry about. Friends of Karen provides the support that lets parents focus on what's most important: their child.” Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to families with a child diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. Since 1978, Friends of Karen has helped more than 11,800 children in the New York Tri-State region. With compassion, dedication and expertise, Friends of Karen helps sustain the entire family during an overwhelmingly frightening time. (NAPSI)—Medicare and Social Security are the foundation of retirement security for millions of American workers. But these vital programs face challenges in the coming years, and the next president and Congress could make decisions about them that might affect you. Why are these programs so important? The typical retiree on Medicare and Social Security has an income of only $20,000 and must devote nearly 20 percent of that for out-ofpocket health care costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Social Security is currently the principal source of income for nearly two-thirds of older American households, and Medicare provides health coverage for nearly all seniors. Many who are not yet retired are struggling with

Career Education Assistance For A Competitive Job Market Pevsner, M.D., President of the Alliance for Affordable Services, “but the cost of postsecondary education continues to increase. That is why it is important for Alliance to offer members assistance in achieving their educational goals, regardless of the type of school they choose to attend.” The grant program is a welcome complement to the already successful Alliance Scholarship Program. Over $1.9 million in scholarship awards has helped more than 1,200 high school graduates and college students pursue undergraduate degrees since the scholarship program’s inception in 1996. The Alliance is dedicated to helping its members live better and save more. It leverages its strength in numbers to provide access to valuable
benefits and services to meet the personal, professional and health care needs of over 75,000 members nationwide. Benefit availability is dependent on the package option chosen and the member’s place of residence and may be subject to change. On Tuesday, December 4th, students at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Jonathan Maletta’s marine science class and Carrie Morgan’s art class participated in a t h r e e - p a r t interdisciplinary exercise combining lessons on the external anatomy of fish with the creation of Japanese Gyotaku printing. During the exercise, students used their newly acquired knowledge of fin position and scale structure of fish species, including striped bass, flounder and porgy, to replicate samples using this distinctive technique. The unit also incorporated background information on Japanese culture.
“Gyotaku provides an excellent way for students to enhance their scientific process skills of observing, hypothesizing, experimenting, comparing, contrasting, measuring and cataloging,” said Morgan. “We felt this would be a more valuable lesson for the students if they were able to participate in a hands-on activity,” added Maletta. Participants were provided with a fish body that had been washed and prepared by the two teachers. Students then were given the task of painting the fish exteriors, placing special paper over them and then rubbing the surface down to create an imprint. This is similar
to the ancient method of using sumi ink and rice paper to create a life-sized impression. The scientific portion of the lesson centered on the importance of scales for protection and as an evaluative tool for scientists. “Scales produce ring patterns, much like rings associated with growth for trees, that help scientists determine their age and also possible spawning events in f r e s h w a t e r environments,” stated Maletta. “Students examined scales of striped bass to estimate their age in an inquiry-based laboratory investigation.” Photo provided by: Syntax

(NAPSI)—Even with the U.S. unemployment rate high, technicians and skilled trade workers top the list of the hardest jobs to fill, according to a Manpower Group talent shortage survey. This gap in today’s competitive job market can be a great opportunity for those who are considering attending a trade or technical school over a traditional college or university. Specifically targeting this high-skilled worker need, one organization has introduced a Career Education Grant Program to provide a one-time $1,000 grant to members and their eligible dependents toward enrollment and attendance at an accredited trade or technical school. “Higher education provides a tremendous advantage toward success,” says Paul

Post-Addiction Aid Hurricane Sandy inflicted tremendous damage to those in the metropolitan area. In the hardest hit areas, there has been tragic loss of life, leaving many grasping for answers. For those in recovery or suffering from addiction, such trauma can be a trigger for renewed or increased use of alcohol or drugs to deal with fear, anxiety, sadness and/or anger. “Our societal norms and the media messages often support the notion that alcohol or other mood altering substances are just the thing to soothe those negative feelings,” said Kathleen Riddle,
president of Outreach, the noted drug and alcohol treatment program. “We see it quite differently. With the holidays approaching, now is a good time to take proactive measures.” “Increased use or alcohol or drugs almost always makes the situation worse, and does nothing to address the underlying problems. Worse, those under the influence have little ability to deal with the events around them, making it more difficult to balance daily needs like working and caring for children while also attempting to find shelter, get the heat back or apply
for assistance,” said Riddle. Substance abuse professionals advise the following: · If you are in recovery, use your support system. Seek out supportive friends or find a professional counselor with whom you can talk out your experience as soon as possible. · Go over the experience in detail. Discuss what you felt while the events were happening. · Make a plan to avoid situations in which alcohol or drugs will be present or offered. Attending self help meetings, church services and social/leisure
Concert To Be Simulcast

In an effort to share the extraordinary 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief with many of those most impacted by this storm, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, The Madison Square Garden Company and The Weinstein Company today announced that this unprecedented event will be simulcast live in select movie theaters in hurricane-affected areas throughout the tri-state region, including in five Clearview Cinemas and a National Amusements Multiplex in Nassau County and the National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Suffolk County. This presentation will be FREE of charge to all attendees and complimentary refreshments will be provided. Clearview Cinemas in Babylon, Baldwin, Franklin Square, Great Neck and Port Washington, along with the National Amusements Multiplex in Farmingdale and National Amusements Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Holtsville will participate. Select theatres from Bow Tie Cinemas, Frank Theatres, Marquee Cinemas, National Amusements and Rave
Cinemas will also participate. Free tickets are available now at the participating theater box offices, and will be distributed on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Event producers James Dolan, John Sykes and Harvey Weinstein issued the following joint statement: “The live simulcast of this historic benefit concert in movie theatres will provide a welcome opportunity for those people still recovering from the devastation to have an enjoyable and muchneeded night out. Seeing this incredible all-star lineup on the big screen and hearing it in surround sound will certainly make for a memorable evening.” This special one-nightonly live music event will benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund and help provide assistance to people throughout the tristate area who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. 12-12-12 The Concert For Sandy Relief, will take place on December 12, 2012 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The all-star lineup includes Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Bruce
Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney, with other artists to be announced. The concert is being produced by James Dolan, Executive Chairman of The Madison Square Garden Company; John Sykes, President of Clear Channel Entertainment Enterprises; and Harvey Weinstein, Co-Founder and Chairman of The Weinstein Company. The concert is being presented by Chase. Thanks to the generosity of concert organizers, sponsors, and Robin Hood’s board of directors, every single penny from ticket purchases and donations will go to serve the victims of Hurricane Sandy through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which is providing money, material and know-how to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm. FREE tickets are available now at the theatre box offices on a first-come, first- serve basis. For more information, visit www.121212concert.org.
activities are all good alternatives. · The parks and other recreational areas are open again after being closed immediately after the storm. Exercise (such as walking and jogging) is a great way to reduce stress and spend time in a healthy way. Yoga, meditation and other relaxation activities can be extremely helpful in times of stress and trauma. · If you are already in a substance abuse program, you may not have had access to the program because of the storm. Most programs are back in operation and you should prioritize making arrangements to see your
counselor. Call and see how they might be able to assist you, especially if you have ongoing disruption or displacement in your life. · Seek professional help if your emotions and/or substance use become overwhelming. Posttraumatic stress is normal after disasters and tragic events, such as Sandy. There is no shame in seeking help in these circumstances. · Volunteer or contribute to the relief efforts. Those who suffered loss in the storm may well find comfort in helping others. Many counselors in programs are able to give back in
this way, even if they themselves suffered trauma in the storm. For those fighting addiction during this post-Sandy recovery time, Outreach has offices in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island with programs for teenagers and adults, including some specialized programs for women and women with children. Many programs are multilingual. If you or someone you know needs help, please call Outreach at 718.847.9233 or visit www.opiny.org.
Sheriff’s Office Honored The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office was honored by all 18 members of the Suffolk County Legislature at today’s general meeting in Hauppauge. The tribute was in recognition of the Sheriff’s Office recent accreditation by the New York State Law E n f o r c e m e n t Accreditation Council. The New York State Law E n f o r c e m e n t Accreditation Program (NYSLEAP) is a rigorous review process that
formally recognizes agencies which meet or exceed 133 quality accreditation standards. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is among one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the State to be granted the accreditation. During today’s ceremony in Hauppauge, Sheriff DeMarco thanked the County Legislature for recognizing the significance of the achievement, and added, “our deputy sheriffs and
civilian staff are among the most talented and respected law enforcement professionals in the State and, and to be recognized by all 18 members of the County Legislature is a special honor. Of the more than 520 law enforcement organizations in the State of New York, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is one of only 143 agencies to have achieved this level of accreditation.
SHERIFF’S OFFICE HONORED - Chief Deputy Sheriff Kerry M. Kneitel, Deputy Sheriff Brian Weinfeld, Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, Deputy Sheriff Investigator William Weick and Chief of Staff Michael P. Sharkey.
to witness the enormity of our efforts and the appreciation expressed by the Marines. The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Young CPAs Committee was formed over 18 years ago to encourage younger members of the Society to participate in events such as the Toys for Tots Program. The Committee is also involved in various networking and professional development activities, which provide a forum for establishing professional relationships and creating leadership
skills. Cynthia Finn Barry has organized the Suffolk Chapter’s Toys for Tots Program since its inception 18 years ago working closely with the U.S. Marine Corps and members of the Suffolk Chapter. The event has grown tremendously over the years and this year over 100 firms and local businesses are participating as drop-off locations including all branches of First National Bank of Long Island and HEALTHCARE HEROES - Mather Hospital had winners in 7 categories for the 2012 local branches of Valley Health Care Hero Awards presented by LI Business News. Congratulations to all the National Bank. winners!

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment:
• Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you
clean with: Never use ammonia—based productsor cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange— on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be

used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface C l e a n e r ( w w w. j a w s c l e a n s . c o m ) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flatscreen TV. It’s also nontoxic and costs less than most other cleaners
because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus
juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary
dental expert Dr. Jan Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential
dental disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall wellbeing of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s well-being,” said Dr. Bellows. To learn more about commonly accepted pet oral health myths and how to keep your pets’ mouths healthy, visit www.Facebook.com/greenie s.
