Students in Chef Mike Frankson’s Introduction to Cooking class at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale spent the last two weeks baking hundreds of cookies. The delectable creations include linzer tarts, biscotti, sugar, chocolate crinkles, chocolate chip, peanut butter, ginger snaps, oatmeal raison, and almond cookies. Baking the cookies was just the first step. The second step was to instruct the students how to create cookie trays. The criterion for each cookie tray was that it weighed two pounds, that the cookies were stacked and visibly appealing, and that the tray was secured properly with cellphone

and ribbon. The most rewarding aspect of this project was that the cookie trays were being gifted to less fortunate students and their families at the Islip

Career Center. Each student in Chef Frankson’s class was permitted to make a cookie tray to bring home to their family to enjoy. Happy Holidays!

Slowly But Surely refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things

will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal” anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

The National Junior Honor Society at R.C. Murphy Junior High School engages in meaningful community service projects throughout the year in an effort to give back to their surrounding community. With a desire to bridge not only the borders of the Three Village area but also the 50 states, this December the student organization coordinated a fundraising effort for young Nicaraguans. Working with the Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization, the school’s students sold colorful hand-woven bracelets (or “pulseras”) to

raise money to support community development projects, scholarships and many other programs that educate and empower young Nicaraguans. For their effort, the NJHS sold the original creations during lunch times for $5 each, with a total of 400 bracelets sold for the cause. The Pulsera Project was created in 2009 when a group of friends traveling in Central America discovered a community of young artisans in Nicaragua. These local artists had learned to weave colorful handwoven pulseras while living on the streets and in

shelters, but had no market to sell their artwork in Nicaragua. Wanting to help their new friends, a few of the travelers returned to the U.S. with pulseras to sell. Three years later, student volunteers and teachers in 40 states have brightened up their classrooms and hallways with these amazing colorful bracelets. Over 200 school communities have united around this simple idea – that by sharing art, knowledge and ideas across cultural lines, one can create a more colorful world.

Celebrating Literacy Students at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in Rocky Point enjoyed a special treat this December when they were given the chance to spend an entire school day wearing comfortable pajamas and celebrating the holiday season through literature.

Acting as conductors from The Polar Express, Principal Virginia Gibbons and Assistant Principal Dr. Courtney Herbert gathered the school’s students in the gymnasium to share the familiar story. Donning conductors’ hats, the building administrators

read the tale of a magical train and the special trip taken by the young children in the story. An annual event at FJC, it remains one that both students and teachers alike look forward to celebrating just before the winter holiday recess.

Mathematical Scholars algebra and geometry to discrete math and number theory. Topics not included in the students’ standard courses of study, such as problem-solving applied to probability, drawing of ocean bottom profile, theory of finite differences, topics in science and mass point geometry, will also be covered. “I’ve always had a passion for math and science and have found my work in the institute very interesting and helpful,” stated Roshan. “I’ve learned a new way to approach problem-solving and have applied those techniques to my everyday class work.” To qualify for this

honor, Roshan and Jennifer competed against approximately 700 students nominated from school districts on Long Island. Selection by the institute indicates that a student is among the top one-tenth of one percent of all students on Long Island in his or her grade in math. Acceptance is based on five criteria: nomination, school transcript, teacher recommendation, a brief written statement by the student and a rigorous entrance exam. Roshan and Jennifer were both nominated by their math teacher Kevin Sihler. Only 79 students across Long Island were given this distinction this year.

All of the dancers spoke unanimously about how good it felt to use their talents to make a difference, the satisfaction they felt from giving back, and the joy of meeting all of the amazing children cared for by Make-A-Wish! Dance Connection was founded in 1989 on Sunrise Hwy. in East Islip. Since then, the company has grown to a 5,000 sqft state-of-the-art facility on Freeman Ave. in Islip. Dance Connection prides itself on it’s essential philosophy; to create a welcoming setting for proper dance education, concentrating on stage presentation, dancer body health and correct technique, while offering bountiful student services and opportunities to enrich their dance experience and cultivate them as great people, as well as great dancers.

The Make-A-Wish holiday party took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holkbrook. The children were very excited to see the dancers perform and seemed to enjoy the minishow with much enthusiasm. The kids were eager to meet and take pictures with the Dance Connection dancers after they performed. The Make-A-Wish administrators at the Suffolk County chapter were extremely appreciative. “I received so many compliments on you all from our staff, volunteers and families! They all were truly impressed, thank you for taking your time to share your talents with the many special families at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. “Once in a lifetime” p e r f o r m a n c e opportunities come around quite often for the competition team dancers at Dance Connection. By the end of this season, some will have danced in four countries, nine U.S. states, in Disney World, and aboard international cruise ships. However, this holiday season, they received a unique and very humbling performance invitation. On Saturday, December 15th, Dance Connection dancers performed at the annual Make-A-Wish holiday party. The MakeA-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Their annual holiday party hosted many of the children and families who are cared for by Make-AWish. This past October, a representative from the Suffolk County chapter of Make-A-Wish contacted Dance Connection asking if they could put together a special holiday piece for the party. communities hurt by Sandy are calling on us for help.” “Walmart has a number of stores and associates across Long Island, and we are deeply concerned by the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused. We are grateful for the opportunity to help great programs like Long Island Cares in this time of need,” said Phil Serghini, Walmart Director of Community Affairs. “Through this grant and others, we are committed to helping the communities we serve recover and rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.” The contribution to Long Island Cares was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s New York State Giving Program. Through this program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The

Members of the Rocky Point Middle School Select Chorus visited the local VFW Post 6249 in mid-December to present their annual holiday musical performance. The students first sang
