“While we support the opportunities for our local sportsmen and women to assist in the management of our whitetail deer resource, it is important that hunters do so lawfully and safely,” ECO Captain Timothy Huss said.

DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit.

Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York

Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded.

Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/ organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded.

On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its needy clubs.

The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief.

The Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (LIHP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the generous donation of $200,000 from the Robin Hood Relief Fund.

In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, The Robin Hood Foundation, New York City’s largest organization in the fight against poverty, has reactivated the Robin Hood Relief Fund, initially created in response to the September 11th, 2001 attacks.

“For 24 years, Robin Hood has been providing housing, food and care for our neighbors in need throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November.

Stony Brook University was named the 22nd best value in public colleges and universities for instate students and the 9th best value for out-of-state students for combining “outstanding education with economic value”

by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its top 100 rankings of public fouryear institutions. Last year, Kiplinger ranked Stony Brook as the 35th best value for in-state and 29th for out-of-state. The rankings are posted on the Kiplinger website and will appear in the February 2013 issue of Kiplinger.

According to Kiplinger, Stony Brook is one of the most selective schools on the list with an admission rate of 39 percent. It is also one of only three in Kiplinger’s top 25 best values to charge an outof-state sticker price of less than $30,000 (after need-based aid,

the cost for out-of-state students is $22,543).

Kiplinger’s assesses quality and affordability according to a number of measurable standards including competitiveness, graduation rates, academic support, student indebtedness at graduation, cost and financial aid.

Suffolk County Community College recently held a Hurricane Sandy Relief Benefit at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.

The purpose of the event was to raise financial support for the College Foundation Relief Fund.

The benefit, which

included a night of live music and comedy entertainment, raised funds to provide assistance for members of the college community that need help replacing textbooks, computers or other electronic equipment, purchasing clothing and food, and covering costs associated with commuting

or other necessities.

The series will begin Sunday, January 13th at Heckscher State Park.

The deadline to apply for the Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program has been extended to January 18th, 2013 for Suffolk County residents.

The FEMA Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program assists in performing temporary repairs to restore power, heat and hot water to primary residences.

STEP is intended to help residents to shelter ‘in place” in their homes pending more permanent repairs.

Suffolk County residents who wish to participate in the STEP Program should call 2-1-1 by January 18th, 2013 to set up an appointment for an assessment of their home.

Once the assessment is completed, the scope of work will be determined and communicated to the program participant. The program manager will schedule a contractor to perform the work needed on the residential property.

Work is required to be completed within sixty days of the assessment of the home.

The students then honed their English language skills by writing essays using their five senses to describe the gingerbread men. They also put their artistic talents to good

(NAPSI)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men.

Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs.

Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially.

The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities.

It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving.

Tips To Help Alleviate Caregiving Stress

Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas.

Boys and girls in the Lindenhurst parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help one of the areas hardest hit by the Super Storm and subsequent nor’easter -

“We wanted to do something special for children this year,” said St. Joseph Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “Our staff collected toys and we had Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Snow Queen and Santa’s elves deliver gifts and hosted a party at the parish to brighten the kids’

The event was held Tuesday, December 18th, and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event.

Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, welcomed Allyson Scerri, Founder and CEO and Kate DiMeglio, Vice-President of New Beginnings Community Center, a notfor-profit center founded in 2011 by Ms. Scerri after caring for her father who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in 2007.

Ms. DiMeglio cares for an adult child with a brain injury. With a core mission of Hope, Healing and Understanding, New Beginnings provides comprehensive out-patient rehabilitation services

for those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), physical and cognitive disabilities and dementia. The center also serves many veterans who are suffering from TBI and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio addressed the committee and discussed plans to open an in-patient rehabilitation facility in Riverhead, “Brendan House” named in honor of Brendan Aykroyd, who died as a result of TBI suffered in an assault. The home will allow TBI victims to live independently while receiving needed care, counseling and support.

They hope to also open a facility in Western Suffolk to provide these services.

“I am proud to welcome Ms. Scerri and Ms. DiMeglio to the Legislature,” Legislator Stern said.

“Their remarkable accomplishment in opening New Beginnings is truly an inspiration.

Brendan House will provide a higher level of service to our veterans and others suffering from TBI and PTSD. Their incredible dedication and ability to transform personal tragedy into such an outstanding facility brings pride and hope to the entire Suffolk County community.”
