Keys To Success By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Wow. The keynote address. Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather

daunting task. Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?! ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect… Wow, what an honor to be asked. Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks. And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long

Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings. Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success. Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

Babylon students shone at the 2013 Suffolk County Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Regional competition, as the district had 30 trophy winners in a variety of business categories. The Babylon School District typically fares well at the annual competition, and this year was no exception. Of the 95 Babylon students who competed at the event, over two dozen went home as award-winners. The district had three first-place winners, a handful of second-place finishers and two third-place winners. Delaney Cassidy and Kerry Glenday took first place in Travel & Tourism, and Matt Finelli finished first in the

Catholic Health Services (CHS) recently presented its Living the Mission Award to Christopher DeRubio for exemplifying the CHS mission values of respect, justice, integrity and excellence. DeRubio, a member of the Building Services team for CHS Services, was nominated for his outstanding qualities and received the award from CHS’s President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr. Following his retirement from the New York City Police Department after 20 years of service, DeRubio joined CHS in 2009 and was promoted to security supervisor 2 years ago. At the CHS Services Melville facility, he coordinates the collection of depositredeemable bottles and cans to be donated to Wellspring Water, Inc., which raises funds to provide clean water to overseas communities in need. He also facilitates the recycling of toner cartridges to benefit Jacob’s Light Foundation, which sends care packages to U.S. troops. A resident of Babylon Village, DeRubio is a member of the St. Joseph the Carpenter Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, the Babylon Village Beautification Society and the Babylon Village Historical Society. Described by one colleague as the facility’s “goodwill ambassador”, DeRubio - along with the other members of the Building Services team, Gene Buccellato and Sudesh Ramsaran - was recognized at a Living the Mission ceremony in Melville. Fellow employees at CHS Services and other subsidiaries of CHS joined them to personally offer their congratulations.

Recently, after an uncle’s funeral. I stood along a ridge among the graves of my ancestors. Many of my great aunts and uncles, my grandparents and close friends of the family are buried in the same section of the cemetery outside of Chicago. Lately, I’d been thinking that burial plots are a waste of good ground and that I didn’t really care what happened to me when I died- the less fuss the better. But as I walked among my people, I felt something I’ve never felt so strongly beforemy connection to them, and their connection to the future through me. I came to appreciate the rituals and traditions that surround the funerals in our family, and began to think of how I might want my passing to be marked.
