Under the supervision of teachers Jim Egbert, Lynette Jabour and Christina Ludwig, tenthgrade honors English classes at West Babylon Senior High School have compiled a book of interviews that they’ve gathered from the veterans in their lives. This project, initiated by Mr. Egbert, is printed every year and distributed to various veteran groups.

Professional Lessons

Kirby Pereira, a clinical pathologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, visited Babylon High School on November 28th to provide a lesson to science research students about life as a medical laboratory specialist. She also detailed the steps that must be taken by students who desire careers in that field in New York State. Pereira, who works for the Catholic Health Services of Long Island as a medical laboratory scientist specializing in microbiology, spoke at

length about the various tests conducted in the field and described the patient-doctor interactions commonly dealt with in hospitals and medical labs. “There is a very high demand for medical laboratory scientists at this time, and the field is rapidly expanding,” said Babylon High School science research teacher Claire Birone. “The students left the presentation with a greater understanding what goes on behind the scenes at hospitals and what actually happens

when doctors order tests to be run on patients. They also became more aware of careers in the sciences that will enable them to use their STEM training as part of the workforce.” Pereira’s lesson included a brief PowerPoint presentation as well as simulated pathology tests such as blood typing and urinalysis. The students were given the opportunity to assist Pereira with the simulated tests.

Coming Together

On Wednesday, November 14th, students from North Babylon High School welcomed local residents to a buffet-style “Storm Recovery Dinner.” Organized by the Students for a Better World and Renaissance clubs, more than 175 North Babylon families gathered together as a community in the school cafeteria to share their

stories. “This dinner was an opportunity for us to reach out to the community that has been supportive of our schools,” said Students for a Better World advisor Veronica Murphy. Added Renaissance Club advisor Alyssa Imhof, “I grew up in North Babylon, and tonight is a great night for us to show everyone

involved what a fantastic community we live in.” To organize the dinner, Ms. Murphy and Ms. Imhof received food donations from local businesses, parent organizations and each of the district’s seven school buildings. “This has been a real community effort,” said Ms. Imhof.

Fourth- and fifth-grade student council representatives at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District have established a lasting friendships during their visits to the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in

West Babylon - walking distance from the school. Students spend time with the residents of the center throughout the year, taking part in activities such as Halloween haunted houses and holiday carol singing. “The students really get joy out of helping and

visiting the senior citizens,” remarked costudent council adviser Melissa Joseph. “They get a sense of accomplishment that they have made others happy in their community. The senior citizens just adore the children, and love the company!”

There was no stopping Babylon’s Eric Schweitzer (126 yards on 18 carries) in the Long Island Class IV title game on December 1st at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium. Schweitzer, a standout junior running back, led the Panthers to a 48-18 victory over the Nassau County champion Roosevelt Rough Riders by notching six rushing

touchdowns, which tied him with two former Long Island football standouts for most rushing scores in a Long Island championship game. Babylon and Roosevelt met three times in the LIC since 1997, with each game decided by 16 points or less. On December 1st, the Panthers proved that the fourth meeting between the two storied rivals would be more

decisive. Babylon opened a 34-6 lead by the half, and Schweitzer sealed the victory with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Santorelli added 136 yards on 12 carries and showed off his arm with 81 passing yards. The victory earned the Panthers (12-0) their fifth Long Island football championship in program history.

Babylon’s girls volleyball team coasted past Oyster Bay, 3-0, on November 13th to secure their first Long Island championship in program history. Babylon’s girls soccer team also made a deep run into the playoffs,

included Eric Schweitzer’s six rushing touchdowns in the LIC championship game, tying a longstanding Long Island record for rushing touchdowns in a football championship, and Shelby Fredericks’ game-winning goal in the Suffolk Class B girls soccer final. In girls gymnastics, Genny Gravina, Mikaila Hartigan, Shannon Hopkins and Kayla McCarthy represented Babylon at the Suffolk championships, and McCarthy’s superb performance earned her a spot in the state championships slated for this spring. the 200-freestyle and 100backstroke events. “I’m very pleased to announce the recognition of our student-athletes,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis said at the December 3rd school board meeting. “They have all had successful, winning seasons in their respective sports.” Rozakis called upon district athletic director Michael DeJoseph to hand out certificates to the athletes, and the school board members assisted with the athlete recognition portion of the meeting. Students had the opportunity to accept a certificate, shake hands with their coaches and school board members, and receive a round of warm applause from the crowd in attendance.

“The waiver of these fees and the assurances of expedited applications are very creative ways to provide assistance to those residents suffering from the effects of Super Storm Sandy,” stated Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer. “I commend County Executive Bellone and Commissioner Tomarken for their leadership and commitment to the residents and business owners of Suffolk County. It will be a long, hard road for these people and we should do anything we can as a community to help them rebuild.”

“Super Storm Sandy took a devastating toll on many areas of Long Island, especially our coastal communities,” said Legislature Rob Calarco. “This move on the County Executive and Department of Health’s part will help home and business owners recover more quickly. Our restaurant owners, in particular, took a very hard hit from this storm. This is one important way to ease the serious burden of rebuilding.” According to the Department of Health Services, fees for applications due to physical damage from Hurricane Sandy will be waived as follows: Wastewater Management application fees, which normally range from $115 to $650 for residential construction and from $1,250 to $5,000 for commercial construction, will be waived. Pollution Control plan review fees will also be waived, including reviews for replacement or repair of storage facilities, which normally range from $210 to 770 per tank and initial registration fees, normally $150 per tank. Necessary incidental fees, such as the Board of Review fee, normally $900, will be waived for in-kind replacements, as well. Operating fees for tanks will be unaffected. Applicants who wish to make an appointment with technical staff to discuss their situation may call the Office of Wastewater Management at 631.852.5700 and/or the Office of Pollution Control at 631.854.2501. County Executive Steve Bellone and Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of the Department of Health Services, announced today that the Department of Health Services will waive application and permit fees and provide an expedited review process for home owners and businesses that are faced with storm-related rebuilding. “This streamlined process will waive fees and allow builders and design professionals to use application forms that they are familiar with, rather than special disaster application forms that could result in delays,” said County Executive Bellone. “In addition, I have asked our environmental specialists to make every effort to expedite such applications within three to five business days.” Super Storm Sandy related requests, which will require a cover letter, will be directed to senior staff in the Department of Health Services Division of Environmental Quality, who will both expedite the review process and offer their expertise in assisting applicants in arriving at the optimal solution for their specific situation. Local building departments will primarily determine the need for approval of plans for replacement of sewage disposal systems. Referrals from local building departments will be given special priority. Fire safety officials, local building departments and state or federal agencies may refer applicants to the health department in cases where repair or replacement of hazardous-materials storage facilities is required due to damage from Sandy. As with sewage disposal system reconstruction, such referrals will be given special priority and will be reviewed as soon as possible. “This is yet another step Suffolk County is taking to
