Island String Festival Association (LISFA). These students were selected along with other top musicians from across Suffolk County on a competitive basis, with New York State School Music Association scores and teacher recommendations as the main criteria. Robert Moses Middle School sixth-grader Brendan Didier (String Bass) will perform at the elementary LISFA concert at Northport High School on January 20th, while Robert Moses Middle School eighth-grader Caroline Pombonyo (Violin) and North Babylon High School freshmen Rochelle Brown (Violin 2) and Anthony Klenke (String Bass) and junior Kevin White (String Bass) will perform at the secondary concert on February 3rd at Ward Melville High School.

DeMarco would like to provide some safety tips that will help everyone have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. “Whenever people feel stressed and rushed, they can be more vulnerable to crime. These tips offer some basic guidelines to follow to be safer while holiday shopping and celebrating,” stated DeMarco. Parking Lots: •When walking through parking lots, be aware of your surroundings. •Always park where there is plenty of light between your car and the store. •Keep your car locked and have your keys in hand before you go to your car. •Before leaving your vehicle, make sure there isn’t anything of value in sight, including cell phones, GPS units and holiday purchases. Shopping: •Shop with others; there is safety in numbers. •Don’t leave your purse unattended in your cart, even for a few seconds. •Don’t carry large amounts of money. Also, don’t eat just because the food is available. Learn more about why you might be eating when not hungry. • Plan. Prepare healthy snacks throughout the day. If you tend to get hungry between meals, bring along a 200-calorie, whole grain, high-fiber snack. Fiber keeps you feeling full longer. Learn how a little planning helps your heart, and your budget. • Slow down. Enjoy each bite and put your fork down while chewing, then take a drink between each bite. This gives your body enough time to trigger your brain that you are satisfied (not necessarily full). • Pay attention. Do not eat in front of the TV or computer, or while standing in the kitchen or talking on the phone. When you do these things, you’re more likely to lose track of how much you’ve eaten. • Use technology. As we continue to become increasingly distracted by modern technology, our focus on health can fall to the back burner. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “We can actually use our smartphones and other electronic devices to help us,” said Platt, a volunteer with the American Heart Association. “There are now apps that manage food records, count calories, help you track what you eat and even provide guidance on healthy food choices at the grocery store and restaurants.” • Keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat, look at it, then identify why you ate it – was it hunger, stress, boredom? Then look for areas you can make adjustments and incorporate healthy changes. “Keeping a food diary is really key to awareness,” Platt said. “Most people are surprised at all they’ve consumed when they review what they’ve eaten.” Eating healthier is just one lifestyle change you can make to live a heart healthy life. Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter reminds all property owners that if you have not received your 20122013 Real Property Tax Statement, you are still responsible for its payment. Please contact your Town’s Receiver of Taxes immediately so that a bill may be mailed to you. “All the towns’ Receiver of Taxes have reported that tax bills will

First-half tax is due without interest by January 10th to the respective Receiver of Taxes, and the second-half is due by May 31st. If the first-half tax is not paid by January 10th, the Receiver of Taxes will add interest at the rate of 1% per month on the balance of the first-half owed through May 31st. After May 31st, the total balance of tax owed is turned over to the County Treasurer for collection. In addition to the flat amount of the tax due, the law requires that the Treasurer collect a 5% penalty together with interest at the rate of 1% per month calculated from February 1st. Treasurer Carpenter also advises taxpayers to review their tax statements carefully, and

pay special attention if the word “Arrears” appears at the top of their bills. Testing Newton

Heather Hosek’s sixthgrade class at Babylon Grade School investigated Newton’s First Law, the law of inertia, during a special experiment using clay crash-test dummies on December 7th. The students created the dummies from clay and then used miniature cars and ramps to observe the distance objects fly from a car after impact. The experiment was an interactive, fun way to illustrate to the students the relationship between speed, distance, velocity,

acceleration and gravity. After formulating a hypothesis about the outcome of the experiment, the students sent their crash-test dummies flying down the ramps and observed the outcome. Using a stack of books, the students then tested the ramps at various inclines to see if the crashtest dummies would travel farther based on the height of the book stack. By the end of the experiment, students were able to identify and apply

Newton’s First Law of Motion to daily life relating to vehicles. The investigation also reinforced the importance of wearing seat belts, and Babylon Grade School Principal Randee Bonagura added that the experiment was a great way for the school to take part in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Panthers head coach Rick Punzone was recognized as Suffolk County Coach of the Year, and Zamet earned an additional honor with recognition as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete.

Elizabeth Logan, Caitlin Morgan, Samantha Sasso and Alexandra Singleton were named All-League, and Erica Baroncelli was All-League Honorable Mention. The historic four-month stretch spawned two Long Island championships, a handful of Suffolk County titles, several divisional victories, numerous individual accolades, incredible team milestones, one Rutgers Trophy and a lifetime of memories. Boys varsity cross-country won the Suffolk Class C title and earned a NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a cumulative GPA of 97.212. Tyler McGarvey was named All-League, All-Division and All-County Academic and earned a spot in the New York State team qualifiers. Matthew Finelli, who shared the same honors as McGarvey, was also named AllCounty. Christopher Fenton was named All-League and also earned a spot in the New York State team qualifiers. Bryan Campbell, Will Grady, Cory Harberg and Nathan Tupper joined the aforementioned boys in the state qualifiers. Girls cross-country earned a NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a cumulative GPA of 96.514 and had two AllLeague athletes in RoseAnn Bencivenga and Meaghan Pashen. It was by “Lights of Love” that the Good Samaritan Hospital Christmas Tree was lit this year. The hospital’s tree lighting event included fun activities and an opportunity to remember or honor someone special by lighting a bulb on the Christmas tree.

The festival raised more than $5,000 for The Hospital Foundation and was enjoyed by several hundred community members, staff and elected officials. The free event featured refreshments and lots of fun with a visit from Santa, his elves and friends from the North

Pole. In addition, attendees had their photos taken in a 15 ft. giant snow globe. St. John the Baptist High School students dressed up as Frosty the Snowman and elves to help with the activities and perform several Christmas classics prior to the blessing of the

Nativity. A large tree, donated by Robert Witcomb Landscape Gardening, was planted in front of the hospital. Together with several smaller trees it framed the Nativity and displayed a symbolic tribute called “Lights of

Love” in honor or memory of hundreds of loved ones. “The Nativity lighting is one of the hallmarks of Good Samaritan’s being a Catholic institution,” expressed Good Samaritan’s Executive Vice President and CAO Nancy Simmons. “This

year was very special with the chance to honor those we love.” Doves bearing the names of those being honored or memorialized will be hung in the main lobby of the hospital during the Christmas season.

ICE CREAM FUNDRAISER - The fifth grade at Belmont Elementary School in North Babylon recently held an Ice Cream fundraiser to start off their last year at CAR WASH FUNDRAISER - The fifth grade at Belmont Elementary School in Belmont. The teachers and principals all scooped the orders for the students. A fun North Babylon recently held a Car Wash to raise funds for their year-end trip. They all worked very hard to achieve their goal, and had a lot of fun too! night was had by all!
