Slowly But Surely By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal” anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to
Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things
refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

During this yuletide season of giving, we in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) especially acknowledge our leagues and clubs plus companies we work with that went beyond the proverbial extra mile to provide Hurricane Sandy relief. SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs made a $10,000 donation to the ENYYSA leagues most
affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) each received $3,333. “We are a national company but New York State is our home and even members of our own families have been affected by Hurricane Sandy,”
c o m m e n t e d SportsSignup CEO Anthony Bruno. “We wanted to give to these organizations to help them get back on their feet.” The LIJSL held a food drive on November 10th and 11th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview and the LIJSL office in Ronkonkoma. 4,134 lbs. of food, personal care items and

Hauppauge Soccer Club coach Joe Grippo organized a fundraiser on November 18 that raised $15,000 in donations and over 9,000 lbs. in nonperishable items for the American Red Cross and Island Harvest. “He put the event together in six days,” said Hauppauge Soccer Club President Pedro Contreras. “Although there were many others in our club who assisted, it was his tireless work that made the event so successful.” The Boys-Under-11 West Babylon Pride assisted with food handouts while the parents cooked some hot meals. intramural fields. The donations of food, clothing and household goods were incredible. Through a church in Deer Park, they were able to get the donations to the town of Lindenhurst to distribute to people in need. They also collected $533 which is being donated to the Red Cross. The Bay Shore Soccer Club had a food and coat drive to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims and adopted several local families for Thanksgiving. The East Islip Soccer Club, assisted by the neighboring West Islip Soccer Club, hosted nearly 70 intramural and travel teams on November 18th and 19th in their “Soccer Over Sandy” tournament. $28,000 was raised for Hurricane Sandy relief and East Islip also made a $2,500 donation to the EJ
Autism Foundation. The Auburndale Soccer Club in Queens collected money for a local family affected by the hurricane. The family has a child that plays for Auburndale, and once they heard that they lost their home and personal belongings, they started a collection at the club’s annual dinner dance. Over $1,100 was raised that night, which was matched by the club. Then a group of five coaches made additional donations to bring the total to $5,000. Auburndale was also able to set up a pick-up location through the club and shipped three truckloads of clothes and food to Staten Island. Breakaway, a training organization that works with SIYSL clubs, hosted a charity indoor soccer tournament, “Staten Island Soccer Over Sandy.” The tourney was
held at the Victory Sports Arena on Veteran’s Day and raised $5,000 for the Staten Island families most affected, including the Dresch family, which lost father George and 13-year-old daughter Angela. Clubs that participated were Notre Dame Academy, Richmondtown, St. John Newman, Silver Lake and Staten Island United. SIYSL club Our Lady Help of Christians hosted 65 teams on December 8th in OLHC’s Playing for Angels tourney. This indoor/outdoor tournament was played at IS34, Angela Dresch’s school. $10,000 was raised for Dresch Family Funds and OLHC Hurricane Relief. Every player received a bracelet and tournament T-shirt in purple, which was Angela’s favorite color.

Advance Care Plans
Robin Amato, Long Island Cares Director of Development and Communications, was grateful for the financial support. "We are so thankful for the financial help Walmart is providing, which will allow us to make the food purchases necessary to feed our Long Island neighbors in need of assistance," she said. "This grant from Walmart comes at a critical time when our local communities hurt by Sandy are calling on us for help. “Walmart has a number of stores and associates across Long Island, and we are deeply concerned by the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused. We are grateful for the opportunity to help great programs like Long Island Cares in this time of need, said Phil Serghini, Walmart Director of Community
Affairs. “Through this grant and others, we are committed to helping the communities we serve recover and rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The contribution to Long Island Cares was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s New York State Giving Program. Through this program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. Last year in New York, Walmart, Sam’s Club locations and the Walmart Foundation awarded over $28 million in cash and in-kind contributions to local organizations.
The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population. With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you
unable to make decisions involving your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today. The Heart Failure Society of America has put together a brochure that will take you through the various steps you’ll need to consider. Log on to Abouthf.org to request a copy. (ARA)

West Babylon High School junior Abigail Carberry has been selected to participate in one of the 2013 National Association for Music Education AllEastern Honors Music Ensembles. Abigail, who will sing in
the mixed chorus, is among 780 musically talented high school students in the Eastern region of the United States chosen to perform at the NAfME Eastern Division Conference next April at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts’ Mortensen Hall in Hartford, Conn. The ensembles, organized by members of NAfME, consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, treble voice chorus and jazz ensemble. LISFA ensemble is a highly competitive process, based on superior scores at the annual New York State School Music Association solo festivals and school music i n s t r u c t o r recommendations. The district congratulates these talented string musicians and their parents and teachers on this o u t s t a n d i n g accomplishment.
Singing For The Season Approximately 30 members of the West Babylon Junior High School Chorus (grades 68) performed holiday songs at a recent tree lighting ceremony and parade hosted by the West
Babylon Lion's Club and West Babylon Fire Department. Led by choral director Adrienne Autovino, the students provided a festive atmosphere, performing traditional Christmas
favorites such as Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells and Santa Claus Is Coming to Town for an audience of community members, district officials, county legislators and Sen. Owen Johnson. STOCKING THE SHELVES - With more than 1,500 individual items collected, the Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon continued its annual holiday tradition of helping to stock the shelves at the Babylon Town Hall Annex food pantry. Jointly organized by the PTA and student council, students donated baby food, toiletries, dog food and other nonperishable food items to the food pantry.
Kindergarten Registration one. Packets must be obtained in advance of the registration week. When registering a child, you will need to present the following: • Original birth certificate or baptismal certificate • Proof of mandatory immunizations • Proof of residency •Single-parent proof of
custody As a limited number of kindergarten slots exist in each elementary school, the district must utilize a first-come, first-served procedure. Those arriving after all available slots have been filled may be enrolled in a neighboring elementary school within the West Babylon School District.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. BA

Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) urgently needs volunteers to join its efforts to stop bullying and cyber-bullying among school-age children. CAPS is Long Island’s leading non-profit resource on the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect, and, through its Bully Prevention Center, provides youth violence prevention and child safety education at no cost to local schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization, and without them, our work would not be possible. While they come from different backgrounds and professions, all share the desire to make a difference
in a child’s life - and they do as CAPS Volunteer Presenters,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. The non-profit is seeking individuals in Nassau and Suffolk to present its bully and cyber-bully prevention programs to students in classrooms across Long Island. “Our prevention through education programs have been proven to be effective in teaching children how to stay safe from bullies, help others, and become good online citizens,” said Ms. Fagin. Professional training is provided free of charge. If you like to work with kids, have spare time during school hours and your own transportation,
you may qualify. Interviews are held at the CAPS Roslyn office. Volunteers are provided free professional training and may choose to facilitate CAPS programs to elementary, middle or high school students. Volunteers are also needed to support general office work and fundraising projects. Call 516.621.0552, extension 104 or 631.289.3240, extension 104 if you are interested. CHRISTMAS COOKIES WITH SANTA - On Thursday, December 13th, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, located at 101 Elm Street in Sayville, hosted its first Christmas Cookies with Santa event. The evening was a huge success in which families, staff and residents enjoyed Christmas entertainment, children activities and a special visit from Santa. Each child received a special gift to take away as a remembrance of this event. This was a great family event in which everyone came together to give our residents a feeling of a celebration in their home.

Operations at Make-AWish Foundation of Suffolk County. After the event, the dancers all met back at the studio to drop off their costumes and reflect on the performance. All of the dancers spoke unanimously about how good it felt to use their talents to make a difference, the satisfaction they felt from giving back, and the joy of meeting all of the amazing children cared for by Make-A-Wish! Dance Connection was founded in 1989 on Sunrise Hwy. in East Islip. Since then, the company has grown to a 5,000 sqft state-of-the-art facility on Freeman Ave. in Islip. Dance Connection prides itself on it’s essential philosophy; to create a welcoming setting for proper dance education, concentrating on stage presentation, dancer body health and correct technique, while offering bountiful student services and opportunities to enrich their dance experience and cultivate them as great people, as well as great dancers.

The Make-A-Wish holiday party took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holkbrook. The children were very excited to see the dancers perform and seemed to enjoy the minishow with much enthusiasm. The kids were eager to meet and take pictures with the Dance Connection dancers after they performed. The Make-A-Wish administrators at the Suffolk County chapter were extremely appreciative. “I received so many compliments on you all from our staff, volunteers and families! They all were truly impressed, thank you for taking your time to share your talents with the many special families at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. Local Dancers Perform “Once in a lifetime” p e r f o r m a n c e opportunities come around quite often for the competition team dancers at Dance Connection. By the end of this season, some will have danced in four countries, nine U.S. states, in Disney World, and aboard international cruise ships. However, this holiday season, they received a unique and very humbling performance invitation. On Saturday, December 15th, Dance Connection dancers performed at the annual Make-A-Wish holiday party. The MakeA-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Their annual holiday party hosted many of the children and families who are cared for by Make-AWish. This past October, a representative from the Suffolk County chapter of Make-A-Wish contacted Dance Connection asking if they could put together a special holiday piece for the party.
