Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
On Saturday, March 16th, the 3rd Annual Elizabeth Durante Memorial Pancake Breakfast will be held, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Islip Fire Department, located on Union Boulevard in West Islip. All proceeds will benefit the Elizabeth Durante Medical Clinic and Orphanage in a remote part of Uganda. There will be raffles, a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 and more. There will also be free tours for children of the
firehouse and the trucks. The Clinic provides free healthcare and surgery for women and children who otherwise would have no access to these medical services. The Orphanage supplies housing to 300 children. Elizabeth Durante was on her way to Uganda in March of 2009 when she was tragically killed by drunk driver. Her parents, Dr. Keith and his wife Kathy, have carried on the mission of the Clinic and Orphanage in Elizabeth’s memory. This fundraiser is sponsored by the West Islip Fire Department. Donations will also be accepted by mail to the Department. Please support this worthwhile cause by attending the Pancake Breakfast or making a donation.

7 Deadly Mistakes That Will Cost You Thousands When You Sell Your Home LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call and 1-877-263-6397 enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Call NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

Back to Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than
practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently
decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

Creative Expressions She Doesn’t Look Back The Gallery Anymore
Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!
By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings
No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

Antony and Cleopatra features several themes known to recur in Shakespearean works. One is the tension of the “other” – or between conventional and unconventional. Cleopatra was “other” by way of her race (Greek/ Egyptian) and also by the fact that she was a great and influential ruler in a world dominated by men. Additionally, the juxtaposition of West vs. East, masculine vs. feminine, Roman coldness and rationality vs. Egyptian passion and heat are all examples of Shakespeare’s exploration of the antithesis in his works. Each Hofstra Shakespeare Festival comprises multiple performances: the fulllength Shakespearean play, a shorter dramatic piece and the “Festival Musicale,” a concert by the Hofstra Collegium Musicum, an ensemble from the Music Department devoted to the performance of early music. The Festival Musicale includes a chorus and ensembles of historical instruments. This year’s Festival Musicale, directed by Professor of Music William E. Hettrick, is StarCrossed Lovers, featuring guest artist Christopher Morrongiello, lute. The companion play is This Bud of Love, a one-hour version of Romeo and Juliet, an excellent introduction to the works of William Shakespeare, suitable for young theatergoers. This is the sixth year that a one-hour adaptation of a Shakespearean work has been performed as part of the Festival. This Bud of Love was adapted from Romeo and Juliet by Hofstra Adjunct Professor of English Maureen Connolly McFeeley and is directed by Professor of Drama Cindy Rosenthal. Star-crossed Lovers and
This Bud of Love will be performed on Saturday, March 16th, at 2 p.m. at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Tickets are $11, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard. There will also be a special performance of This Bud of Love on Thursday, March 21st, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with current HofstraCard. Tickets for the Festival Musicale and companion play are also available through the Hofstra Box Office. The cast and crew of This Bud of Love will also be touring local high schools in March. As with other companion play tours in the past, for many teens this is their first exposure to a Shakespearean production. The tour also gives the Hofstra students the valuable experience taking a show on the road – and the tour is really something they have to manage logistically and artistically. Notable casts over the years have included Phil Rosenthal, the creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond; Tony-nominees Tom McGowan and Peter Friedman; film and stage actor Joe Morton; film and television actresses Susan Sullivan, Margaret Colin and the late Madeline Kahn; and Tonynominated Broadway director Susan Schulman, among many others. Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgewick and Brian Dennehy, who are not Hofstra alumni, performed in the Shakespeare Festival High School Competition as teenagers. Dennehy has said his brief experience in the Festival helped ignite his love for acting.

is proud to support them during this pivotal stage of their careers.” Fellowships are awarded in eight scientific fields – chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, evolutionary and computational molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics. Since the program’s inception in 1955, the Sloan Foundation has awarded nearly $120 million in support of more than 4,200 early-career researchers. Administered and funded by the Sloan Foundation, the fellowships are awarded in close cooperation with the scientific community. To qualify, candidates must first be nominated by their peers, and are subsequently selected by an independent panel of senior scholars. Past recipients of the Sloan Research Fellowship have gone on to win 38 Nobel Prizes including Stony Brook University’s Paul C. Lauterbur (1965 Sloan Fellow, Stony Brook), 14 Fields Medals (mathematics) including Stony Brook University’s John W. Milnor (1955 Sloan Fellow, Princeton),
and eight John Bates Clark Awards (economics). Sloan Fellows may use their grants to pursue whatever lines of inquiry are of most interest to them, and they are permitted to use fellowship funds in a variety of ways to further their research including for such purposes as equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, trainee support and any other activity directly related to the Fellow’s research. Funds are awarded directly to the Fellow’s institution. Professor Essig received a BSc and a BSc (Hons) in Physics and a BSc in Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; and earned his PhD in physics from Rutgers University. He has published almost 30 peerreviewed articles in such journals as Journal of High Energy Physics, Physical Review D, Physical Review Letters, Journal of Physics G, Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics and more. He has also given approximately 50 invited presentations.

Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “His broad research program embracing the intensity, cosmic and energy frontiers, is at the forefront of particle physics research and the search for new laws of physics. We look forward to great discoveries from him in the future.” “The Sloan Research Fellows are the best of the best among young scientists,” said Dr. Paul L. Joskow, President of the Alfred P. broad range of innovative therapies designed to enhance the quality of life for the individuals we serve.” The families of our residents who come from all around Nassau and Suffolk counties will have the opportunity to see their loved one interact with the robot. Dr Kristie Golden, Vice President of Ambulatory & Community Services noted, “We look forward to seeing many smiling faces for those who call Broadlawn their home and we have the Faith Home Foundation to thank for that precious gift of happiness.”

Gerard M. Kaiser, Vice President of Senior Services and Administrator of Broadlawn Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center stated, “I am very excited and truly grateful to the Board of Directors of the Faith Home Foundation who supported our vision of utilizing the Paro Therapeutic Robots for our patients and residents. Their generous grant of $10,000.00 enabled us to secure two robots to be shared within our facility.” The Paro Robot is an advanced interactive robot that provides documented benefits of animal therapy, where live animals present treatment or logistical challenges. Presently, the Paro Robot is being used as a therapeutic intervention in numerous countries around the world. This ingenious device is embodied in a large, cuddly replica of a baby harp seal, complete with specially designed antiseptic fur and appealing longlashed, saucer eyes. Microprocessors adjust its behavior based on information received through dozens of sensors, taking in sensations such as light, sound, temperature, posture and touch. It responds to being petted and stroked as a pet dog would, showing pleasure through its movements and sounds. For example, “Scratch the top of Paro’s head, and he will snuggle closer and respond with a kind of mewing. Pinch his flipper, and he pulls back and squeals. Over time, he will learn to respond to a familiar voice”. Broadlawn Manor’s residents, in particular those with dementia disorders, will surely benefit from this therapeutic medical device.
