BER SAB ARC | DESIGN PORTFOLIO
BER SAB ARC Design Studio started as a vision of excellence in 2014, envisioning to be a competent young architectural firm coming from a strong line of master builders. The principal architect established the studio in October 2016, aiming to bring fresh designs and ideas into the built environment of the Philippines. The studio highlights four core principles: Smart, Competent, Innovative and Adaptable. Being smart is highlighted by efficient building designs through BIM technology. This efficiency produces faster design iterations and proper coordination with other industry stakeholders. The studio also aims to seek for top-notch technical competency with associates having strong backgrounds in building information modelling, computer-aided drafting, 3D visualization, virtual reality simulation, graphic design, furniture design, and computational design so that the studio will be able to help clients envision the proposals even before construction. With a young generation of associates, BER SAB ARC’s Research and Development is eager to test out new concepts and ideas with bleeding edge technology to cope up with future problems. With a firm background in building information modelling (BIM), BER SAB ARC delivers smart project designs that are flexible to rapid iterations and adaptable to different forms of experimentation so solutions can be easily found in stakeholder coordination. BER SAB ARC Design Studio strives to be the best with every project we encounter and to deliver more innovative concept-solving for the future. Along with our reputation, we are committed to bring the best service to our clients.

Ar. Neil John J. Bersabe started his architectural journey in Ateneo de Davao University in 2009. This equipped him with rudimentary principles in design that jump-started his whole creative process. In 2014, Neil started his internship at SMMascardo + Associates, under the guidance of Ar. Salvador M. Mascardo II. The internship was an experience that taught more about the technical aspects in design, production of construction drawings, and architectural visualizations.
“Smart, Competent, Innovative and Adaptable.” - Core design principles
7
Ar. Mascardo also played a lot of influence in the creative design process. Being a natural artist, he mentored a lot in terms of architectural composition and proportioning, and the language of architecture and different styles in general. After the Internship, Neil worked in Ugnayan Builders Davao Corp. The family business is a design-build construction firm and his father, Engr. Noel D. Bersabe, is the president and owner. Growing up, Neil was exposed to different types of construction methodologies and during the time he worked there, his creative journey was challenged with real life situations. It was where the real understanding of materiality, construction, and actual
implementation of designs were considered. The creative process has always fascinated Neil from the inception of an idea to the actual implementation of a project. In January 2016, he took the Architectural Licensure Exam, topping first place out of 1,550 examinees all over the nation. This momentum helped Neil seek out more learnings and be more rigorous in his work. This is when he focused and implemented a full BIM process into his design workflow. In October 2016, BER SAB ARC Design Studio was established with the aim to introduce a new and more efficient workflow into the Architectural Engineering and Construction Industry (AEC) into the Davao scene. Presently, BER SAB ARC Design studio, the brainchild of Ar. Neil John J. Bersabe, continues to pursue his vision of innovation and aspires to introduce new design concepts like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality into the design workflow. Along with the studio’s ever growing staff of competent and reliable Architects, the studio will bring the best ideas and services to their clients.

SPACE LEGEND:
The core concept proposal for the project affirms to the principles of modernity while juxtaposing it with contemporary Filipino designs. The character of the form is accentuated by the tall corner windows that bring in natural light into the interiors. The staircase, which is located at the center of the plan, also brings in ample amount of natural light into the dining and family area minimizing artificial lighting use during the day. A study on streamlining of residential use blurred the transitions between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces
and defined an open plan in the residence. This project was also the first BIM model created by the studio. This process established a different paradigm in the studio as well as the built industry in the locality. Designing was more iterative, material takeoffs and scheduling was more efficient. The final result was a source of pride and inspiration for the studio due to a faster project delivery and a more sustainable design process.

The Sagarino Farmhouse is located on a threehundred and fifty square-meter lot, composed of a carport, porch, outdoor lounge, foyer, powder room, living room, kitchen, dining area, alfresco, family room, lanai, study room, four bedrooms, and four bathrooms. The residence is a bungalow type which is commonly characterized by a wellproportioned facade, a wide-covered veranda, and a large porch. Strategically maximizing cross ventilation through integration of open spaces, ample windows, and sliding doors allow proper circulation of air, keeping indoor spaces cool in hot and humid climate. In the living room, it features a high ceiling which adds depth to the space, making it more spacious and adding natural light. The spaces are being demarcated from one another by their differences in floor elevation.

The Torres Residence sits on an approximately seven-hundred and forty square-meter lot located on the hills overlooking the city of Davao. The biggest challenge in the design project was planning on a twelve percent slope. The topography of the lot has a height difference of ten meters from the front of the lot to the rear. The strength of the site is that the frontage is facing east with a beautiful overlooking vista of the city and must be maximized in the design. The prevailing wind also comes from this direction. The study of the project focuses on the opportunities that open for different design strategies that the topography has to offer. The plan was grouped into three different levels. The lowest level is the carport and utility spaces. The ground level is where most of the private spaces are located like the bedrooms and private study spaces. The Mediterranean theme prevailed in the overall concept of the project because of the nature of these types of designs and how they blend into sloping topographies.

The Cliff House The Cliff House sits on a six-hundred and ninety-one square-meter lot in Las Terrazas Subdivision with a view overlooking a part of Davao City. It has three levels of different functions. First, the lower ground floor contains most of the service, utility, and recreational spaces. Second, the upper ground floor holds both private and communal spaces. Lastly, the second floor is where most private spaces are located. One of the house’s main features is the living area that highlights the high ceiling and large windows that create an illusion of space, adding depth and dimension, thus making a bright and airy interior that exudes an atmosphere of grandeur. The project is a re-imagined concept of the Insular House, particularly drawing inspiration from southeast asian architecture. Since tropical modern houses aim to integrate natural elements into the building, clerestory windows and louvers are applied in order to take advantage of natural light and to ensure adequate circulation of air inside the building. Spatial experience, explored through simplicity and lightness in design, create a pleasant and tranquil atmosphere within the house.

The container house is a product of a study on cost effective design strategies while reusing old containers. The use of shipping containers as a material in building residential dwellings has grown popular due to its flexibility as it can easily be customized to fit many purposes; durability to withstand extreme weather conditions; eco-friendliness as it reduces the quantity of other conventional building materials needed for construction, and modularity and mobility in providing ease during transportation and construction. Thus, further enhancing cost effective project delivery.

The overall goal of the design is to bridge the gap between different generations and social classes, aiming to break the notion of exclusivity in most hotels through a more appealing yet affordable design for everyone. The facade of the hotel embodies a straightforward design intended to give more emphasis on its interior design over its exterior, for the purpose of attracting customers from the outside and bringing them to appreciate the beauty inside as well. Moreso, various exterior elements are integrated, enough to serve its main function and purpose. Multiple horizontal ledges are mainly situated on the south side for sun shading, mixed with vertical elements to balance out the feeling of grandness and groundedness. It compliments with varying glass panels, from reflective to frosted material, which takes advantage of daylight as a supplementary element to the structure’s design character. Native green elements are also incorporated with the warm colors of the walls, ceiling, and fenestration to create a more tropical look. Moreover, commercial spaces and amenities are incorporated for the convenience of the customers, users, and hotel staff.

Babox, a proposed boutique hotel, embodies the basic typology of reusing old shipping containers for functional forms. It is located in a six-hundred square-meter lot that is comprised of ten rentable units, thirty-two hotel rooms, storage room, office, dining room, and kitchen. The skylight maximizes the use of natural lighting during the day, reducing the consumption of energy from artificial lighting. Moreover, colors play an influential role in the hotel’s overall design as these become more than just elements of decoration. It is also intended to impact the atmosphere, radiating a summer or beach vibe since the hotel is located in Babak, Island Garden City of Samal. Modularity enables combining two or more shipping containers to produce larger structures. Stacking and grouping shipping containers allows spaces to be properly defined and compartmentalized according to their function.

The Bangkal Hotel is composed of a lobby, reception area, admin office, luggage room, linen room, utility room, three rentable units, and forty-two hotel rooms, divided into six twin rooms, eight double rooms, and twenty-eight queen rooms. Designing the hotel involves experimental applications using repetition in bespoke facades bringing visual rhythm and uniformity. Since the hotel is located along the main highway, creating a double façade and incorporating planters as well as visual screens, filter out noise and dirt. The visual screens also follow a sawtooth pattern that breaks
and accentuates the building from its massive and box-like form. The choice, composition, and placement of materials emphasizes and complements the building’s form. The study of materiality using the unconventional showcases how building materials can add visual interest.

Modular construction, using shipping containers, has become an increasingly popular option for commercial applications such as diners or restaurants. Housing businesses within a modular unit provides entrepreneurs with a fully customized facility that is economic and eco-friendly since shipping containers would no longer require extensive retrofitting and could easily accommodate the entrepreneur’s business needs. Shipping containers can either be placed side by side or stacked on top of one another in order to have an additional floor spaces, making expansion easy for businesses’ future growth.

The nature of the design seeks to create illusions of bigger spaces by placing mirrors and light colored walls. The contrast between light and dark adds a workable environment to the space. The overall theme of the design is a modern contemporary interpretation of Philippine Architecture with a twist of Zen and Japanese influences. The initial concept for the design was in line with the project requirements of studio optimization. The lot was then already owned by Ugnayan Builders Davao Corp. and was seen as a prospect lot for the development of their corporate office building. This then became an opportunity for the designer to explore different studies for the project.

The concept also defines a roofed garden which connects through the different floors and terminates the whole tour through the galleries into a common collaborative social space. This design intent forces social interaction and reflection which the whole process of the musuem intends to convey its visitors, a retrospection of the different realities that happened during the martial law. The left-wing, downward-facing structure, defines more visual weight although has a diagrid roof which is lifted up and symbolizes upliftment from oppression. This area creates a balance in the overall structure by imposing an asymmetrical balance in the main facade. ACCESS Redirecting Parking, Loading and Drop-Off Zones to create a seamless flow of vehicles into the space while reducing pedestrian strain.
SPACES The nature of highway hotels serve transient spaces to stay and basic needs for vehicles like pumping and service stations.
FORM The core concept’s basis was a central focal point which defines the radial development of the hotel and the scale from the concave. The facade, which is mainly dictated by the diagrid system offers free interiors devoid of structural columns inside.
Diagrid Structural System Diagrid is a framework of intersecting diagonal structural members. The use of this system allows wide span of column-free structure which is very different from the conventional type of construction.
Lines and Curves The design is a contrast between lines and curve. The fluidity of the building form and the rigidity of the structural elements, especially the diagonal orientation of the members, create a dynamic relationship.

In Latin, liber refers to “book”, and may also mean “free”. The Liber is a conceptual book pavilion design that may stand on a seventy square-meter area. The pavilion is designed to bend the common principles of a library through introducing a re-envisioned idea of a library that encourages people to explore and socialize. It will also become a means of providing the public with a space and avenue where not only they can immerse and free themselves by reading books, but also tell their own stories.

The concept aims to blur the dichotomy of active and passive spaces by integrating softscape elements into the hardscape. The growing popularity of this strategy defines the majority of the design elements of the project. Tree Guard DESIGNER
Angela Joy Tagaro The Tree Guard Pavilion is a structure composed of a coffee shop, a toilet, and a waiting shed, built around a tree. It is designed with a concept of embracing nature within the built environment. The intent was to create an atmosphere where users would be able to enjoy street-life and appreciate nature closely at the same time. Fins were used instead of walls for passive ventilation and lighting, as well as to avoid the feeling of displacement from the actual environment. The building form was intended to feel “natural, hence the use of curves instead of straight lines. The design also benefits, not only the aesthetic quality of the street, but as well as the environment by helping eliminate dust accumulation and reduce heat within the surrounding environment through its pocket gardens.

The Waffle Chair:
A Parametric Stereotomy Concept The ceation of the Waffle Chair involves a process called Stereotomy or Descriptive Geometry wherein two-dimensional representations are transformed into threedimensional objects then cut into distinct shapes.
Modelling and Assembling the Waffle Chair The Waffle Chair is entirely modelled in Rhino using a plug-in called Grasshopper which is a powerful graphical algorithm editor. First, the chair is created as a solid massing model in order to easily define and divide the model into sections. Using Grasshopper scripting, the direction, contours, thickness, and spacing of the ribs are defined. At the same time, it serves as a tool for extracting its sections, and for computing the notches of each section before assembly. Through scripting with Grasshopper, changes in design can be easily made, offering various design ideas and options that can be explored before finalizing on one idea that exactly fits to the project’s purpose.

THE WAFFLE CHAIR
The two-dimensional sections of the chair were printed on a tarpaulin before tracing them on a plywood then cutting each piece using a jigsaw.
Through the notches, the ribs were then assembled like puzzle pieces, connecting one section to another without using an adhesive. 116
