The people of Strabane and beyond were glued to their television sets on Sunday, February 15 as local singer-songwriter, Chloe Wilders appeared on RTE’s ‘The Voice of Ireland’. As part of the Blind Auditions, the 19 year-old won over coach Niall ‘Bressie’ Breslin with her performance of Jason Mraz’s ‘I Won’t Give Up’. Her spell-binding delivery left the former Blizzards front man in no doubt that Chloe belonged in ‘Team Bressie’. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Chloe was still on a high from her successful performance. “I was just in shock! I can’t stress enough how nervous I was. But I couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. Of all the coaches in the chairs, I was hoping ‘Bressie’ would turn around. I was delighted when he did, as you could tell from my smile,” laughed Chloe. Her performance has now gone viral since it aired and in just over a week it has already generated over 11,000 views on YouTube. Chloe is no stranger to the world of music, having already signed a

deal with American label SRI Records. She also released a self-penned, critically acclaimed album titled ‘You Don’t Know Me’. Up next for Chloe, however, is the ‘Battle Phase’ of ‘The Voice of Ireland’. Each team of singers will be mentored and developed by their coach. In the second stage, coaches will have two of their team members battle against each other by singing the same song, with the coach choosing which team member will advance to the next stage. “I’m still on a high right now so bring on the battles,” enthused Chloe. “I would also like to thank everyone for their support. It has been overwhelming and I’m just enjoying the experience.”

Bright spark Emer heads for science final STRABANE’s Emer Maguire may soon be Northern Ireland’s next big name in science. That’s because the 23-year-old Speech and Language Therapist, who originally went to Lumen Christi College in Derry~Londonderry, is through to the final of FameLab Northern Ireland. The global science communication competition, which is run in conjunction with the British Council, the inaugural Northern Ireland Science Festival and Cheltenham Science Festival, will see Emer battle it out to be named Northern Ireland’s newest science star. Speaking about the importance of both the masterclass and the FameLab competition, Mr Love, who is a top public communications skills trainer and an ex-senior producer for the BBC, said: “FameLab, which is now in its tenth year, is an extremely important science competition - not only for the finalists - but for society as a whole. The competition identifies and fosters talent and can inspire more people to get involved and become passionate about science. “We need to encourage the brightest minds to join the scientific enterprise and we can do this through FameLab – giving scientists dozens of reasons to engage more with the public. FameLab promotes discussion; enhances people’s lives and enriches culture; enabling some of societies biggest problems to be solved. “The masterclasses are probably the most rewarding and important element of the competition for any of the nine finalists. It teaches them how to speak to be understood, the importance of body language and how to talk to the media. They also got to hear from Fergus, who shared his own experience as a FameLab contestant, which will prove invaluable.”

UK FameLab Final FameLab is held annually in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States and will see the finalists talk about everything from

science to engineering, with topics ranging from the practical to the bizarre, as they battle it out to impress the judges in just three minutes. Each contestant will walk away with a trip to the Cheltenham Festival to meet with the International FameLab community, while the winner will go forward to the prestigious UK FameLab final. Entertainment on the night will be provided by Northern Ireland’s top mentalist, David Meade, who acting as compere, will bamboozle the audience with his legendary mind tricks. He hosts on the back of his ground-breaking US TV special, where he cracked the Las Vegas casinos, and his current sold-out Northern Irish tour. Ahead of the competition, Jonathan Stewart, Deputy Director at British Council Northern Ireland said: “The bridge between science and the public is communication. Competitions such as FameLab Northern Ireland are fundamental for this if we are to keep Northern Ireland on the world stage. “Through FameLab we can encourage a more STEM literate society and engage young people in international science opportunities, while also giving as many scientists and engineers the opportunity to engage with the public and develop their career with thousands of like-minded scientists around the world.” Emer contested the final last night as this paper went to press so fingers crossed!

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.

Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.

Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.

“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”

As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Local author launches nostalgic book in aid of charity

Derg Arms 43 Main Street, Castlederg, Co. Tyrone

Native Donegal author and local Historian, Pearl Hutchinson has just launched her book ‘Behind the wooden Counter’ which was inspired by her father’s little sweet shop in rural Ireland. I can still see my father, Charlie Kee standing behind the wooden counter in our shop. Behind him were rows and rows of sweetie jars and the bins that held the tea and sugar. In front of him was the weighbridge on the counter. Above his head was the string used to tie the brown paper parcels. In rural Ireland the country shop together with the church and the school was an integral part of Irish life. It was a place for people to meet, to talk and to laugh. At times it was a place to share secrets or unburden a grief. Customers were all country folk. Their families having lived in the same place for generations knew a lot about each other. The traditional home was either a large two storied house or a thatched cottage with whitewashed walls and a half door. Until the 1960’s the old way of life continued. Transport was limited with few people owning cars so local shops were essential. For 50 years the country shop has been in decline. Where once there were shops every couple of miles now it is rare to find any. My father’s shop was situated along the River Finn, five miles from the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar in Co. Donegal.

Hutchinson It is a nostalgic book remembering country shops as they used to be. One reader wrote “ I could smell the tea in the tea chest and the bacon on the slicer.” Since publication I have heard from people all over the country who have similar stories to tell. Dervish at the Millennium Forum Acclaimed Traditional Irish Music band, Dervish will appear at the Millennium Forum this Friday 27th February 2015. From the Great Wall of China to packed auditoriums in the Holy Land and more recently being the first Irish band to perform at the greatest music festival in the world, ‘Rock In Rio’ in front of an estimated audience of two hundred and forty thousand people, Dervish have come a long way in seventeen years. Formed in 1989 by a group of five musicians; Liam Kelly, Shane Mitchell, Martin Mc Ginley, Brian Mc Donagh and Michael Holmes, they have gone on to become one of Ireland’s best

loved traditional/folk groups. Described as “An Icon of Irish music for 24 years” by the BBC, this band presents a comtemporary take on traditional music that stays true to the genre’s origins. Don’t miss a great night of music when Dervish performs at the Millennium Forum on Friday 27th February 2015. Tickets are now available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings.

Robust business cases needed to access SEUPB funding Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said that businesses should now be preparing robust business cases in order to access the £208m announced by Special European Union Programme Body (SEUPB) today. Ms. Anderson said,

Friday 27th February 2015 Box Office: 71 264455 www.millenniumforum.co.uk

“I welcome the fast that over £208m has been made available through SEUPB in the new cross-border co-operation programme. “This money will soon be available for small businesses and enterprises along the border region in order to improve employment opportunities as well as environmental projects.

“The money which will be divided into four categories of research and innovation, the environment, sustainable transport, and health will allow over 400 businesses to access money as well as bringing improved environment projects to over 10,000 people. “I have already brought many interested groups to Brussels over the past few years and will continue to assist these groups in accessing funding. “I would appeal to these businesses and interested groups to start preparing robust business cases as competition for this money will be very competitive. “The application process and deadline dates will soon be on the SEUPB website at www.seupb.eu so it should be monitored so that deadlines are not missed.”

Mr Grey’s appointment book was FULL @ Eclipse Cinemas Lifford/Strabane

Eclipse Cinemas Lifford/Strabane had a FULL appointment book for Mr. Grey on Friday 13th February when the Premiere of the year’s most talked about got underway. All the people who came to see Jamie Dornan as Mr. Christian Grey in the blockbuster movie ‘50 Shades of Grey’ were not left disappointed, love was in the air on opening weekend as hordes of ladies and smiling couples treated themselves to 2 hours with Mr. Grey, the cinema was packed to the rafters for one of the most talked about movies in years. Everyone got all glammed up for the big occasion with many booking meals to make the night complete. We wonder if the release of the newStar Wars movie at the end of the year will cause as much fuss! If you would like to book an appointment with Mr Grey or see him AGAIN he will be here all week. Check out film times @ www.eclipsecinemas. com.

Top Tips for Family Holidays

6. Save on bulky luggage while travelling by hiring or buying things like cots, buggies etc at the destination. As push-chairs are also susceptible to in-flight damage, getting a cheap second-hand stroller might be a good idea. Your hotel may also provide cots, which would help you cut down on some of the bulky baby equipment. Backpack baby carriers are also great. You can fill them up with baby’s clothes on the way out, and use them for trips when you’re there.

Travelling with kids can raise many questions: “How will I keep my children entertained?”, “Will they cope with long hours travelling?”, to the extent that you may wonder if you’ll ever travel again! But parenthood shouldn’t and needn’t be a reason to stop exploring our world. There is no denying that travelling with small children has its perils, but family holidays are often some of the best memories of our children’s younger years. With the right preparation and attitude it can not only be an opportunity for parents to spread their wings, but also for kids to be inspired by mum and dad’s adventurous spirit.

7. To get some couple time, find out if hotel has a baby sitting service. Alternatively, you could invite the grandparents along or travel with some friends with kids. That way the kids have someone to play with, and the parents can take baby sitting in turns.

There are no hard and fast rules for what might suit a child of a certain age, but don’t try to do too much – perhaps start by scheduling a few activities and see how you get on. Ryan Doc’s 21st at the Pool Bar

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 20 year old former chair of Strabane Youth Council and local Activist, Corey French. Where in Strabane did you grow up? I have grown up in the Melmount Road all my life.

First job? Working for my grandfather Martin in Katy Daly’s Entertainment Complex.

A Favourite holiday destination? Portugal

A favourite film and why? ‘The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings’ because it was such a trilogy. There was so many twists and stories to it and it was well put together. Corey French

Favourite kind of music? I found myself enjoying music that was well before my time so I like anything I can dance to lol. Favourite food? Chinese & Indian An ideal night out? For me I enjoy sitting in a bar in front of a fire, near the jukebox and having a laugh with my friends, and of course getting to a nightclub.

An ideal night in? With my mum and family watching ‘Goggle Box’. It’s like ‘Goggle Box’ when we are on the sofa haha!

Something you love about Strabane? What I love about this town is the people I know. Strabane is going through a difficult time but I know that even when people are struggling financially they are always generous when it comes to donating to charity or a great cause.

which will benefit everyone here in Strabane i.e. Jobs.

Something about Strabane that you miss? When there was loads of places for us young people to go.

People who makes you proud to be from Strabane and why. The work I do here in Strabane is for every last person in it. I don’t do it for anything else other than the fact that I want to see our town back on the road to recovery and if what I do puts a smile on people’s faces then that also puts a smile on mine and I’m happy enough and that makes me proud to be a Strabane man.

Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future. I just hope that we get lucky in the future and we end up with something good coming our way

Who are your five dream dinner guests? Michelle Keegan, Emma Watson, Liam Neeson and Brendan O’Carroll.

We Should Be Diving For Pearls It’s now rare, near impossible, not the find an endless stream of information on any musician, thanks to the information spaghetti junctions, highways and byways of the Internet. There is arguably no finer time to discover an artist who escaped your radar in the past. A quick surf of the web and there is access to countless songs, albums; videos, concerts; bootlegs, articles; and blogs. Last summer I had one of those ‘where have you been all my life?’ moments when I saw footage on BBC4 of Judee Sill performing on ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ from 1973. At this point I should apologise to anyone reading who is well familiar with her, as everything ahead will be nothing you haven’t already read! I had never heard of, nor seen this lady before. Looking every bit like the stereotypical librarian, with the straight parted hair, round glasses and conservative clothing, she looked as if a sneeze with knock her off the chair.

Her records seem buried beneath the predominantly male catalogue from the Laurel Canyon scene of the ‘70s.

Few seem willing to speak about her. One former friend has put up a short online blog chronicling road trips the pair took back in the 1960s, although even she refused to give her name. JD Souther, with whom Sill had a brief affair and for whom her song ‘Jesus Was A Crossmaker’ was written, did speak recently for a BBC Radio Four documentary called ‘The Lost Genius Of Judee Sill’. Longitude 2015 Line-up Announced

It may only be February but some information on one Irish summer festival has already come through. Longitude returns to Marlay Park from July 17-19. Friday, July 17 will welcome home Grammy nominated Hozier who is currently on a sold out tour of Europe and the USA, and seems to be making all the right waves in all the right places. While we at ‘Total Music’ remain unconvinced, it will matter very little to the Bray singer as for over 17 weeks his self-titled debut album sat at number one in the Irish album chart. He’s also on the bill for this summer’s

Buffy to Join Huffy in Belfast

One Steven Patrick Morrissey, just Morrissey to you and me, will bring what seems to be his own brand of a ‘never-ending tour’ to Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on March 24. It’ll be his first live appearance in the north since his, still hard to believe, appearance in Omagh and the Waterfront Hall in 2008. He played in Dublin as recently as December 2014, with a setlist very heavy on his recent album: hardly the act of a man often accused of living on past glories. That his most recent album, ‘World Peace Is None Of Your Business’ is a cracker should make a repeat most welcome. There will certainly be a few tracks from his days in the Smiths mixed with a hatful of solo numbers from down through the years. Given his penchant for trouble it could prove to be a controversial night that will have the Nolan phonelines busy the next morning, as our intrinsic need to whinge surpasses even Morrissey’s! Back to the music and exciting news has emerged that Mozza’s special guest on the night will be Canadian-American singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. Now 73, she remains a passionate musician, visual artist; pacifist, social activist; and campaigner for Native Americans. With a recording career that spans five decades, her performance will certainly be worth getting in early for. Our bus for the gig is picking us up outside KFC. Don’t tell Morrissey, or the whole thing will be off!

From Castlederg to Kenya, with love Twenty years after her death (on October 31st 1995), the generosity of Castlederg woman Maggie Cole is being celebrated in a tiny village thousands of miles away in Eastern Kenya. The new Cole Baby Unit of FAME (Friends of Africa Missionary Endeavour) situated just beyond Mwingi township, has been named in honour of Maggie Cole. This specialised unit, the only one of its kind in the area, will be a haven for orphaned and abandoned babies and toddlers, providing them with nutrition, medical help and a caring home while the search goes on to match them with new adoptive families. Built in response to a request from a Child Welfare Officer, the unit has been named in Maggie’s honour as a permanent and fitting memorial to the woman who, although childless herself, loved children. Her love was translated into practical help which became the foundation of the new FAME mission which was formed a year after her death. Alan Dunlop who founded the Mission in 1996, with his wife, Irene, was Maggie’s former Pastor from 1976 till 1981. He says, “Maggie Cole was what we in Ulster would call ‘a good Christian lady’. She lived modestly and quietly, she was well known and respected in the community, and she made her contribution to her church activity unobtrusively, without fuss, and never looked for any kind of recognition. As one who spent

The late Maggie Cole from Castlederg.

many hours with her in the few years before she died, I know she would have been very pleased to be remembered in this way. “In her lifetime Maggie gave generously to many causes, not all of which would have been fully aware of her commitment, but she cared most passionately about our work in Africa and was always eager to support the poor and needy children there. When the opportunity presented itself by naming the new Baby Unit, it was the perfect way for us to honour her memory and generosity – although, sadly, this tribute came after her

death.” Mrs Cole was the widow of Alex, who died on 31st December 1969 and who worked for many years with the local Council. She was born and lived her whole life in the Castlederg area, brought up with an aunt who lived off Claremore Road. As a young woman she was well known for her role collecting ‘club’ money for Cox’s of Castlederg and she did all her rounds on her bicycle! As a girl, Maggie was a faithful attender at Gospel missions, and she became a committed Christian at an early age. There are still those alive today who knew Maggie from those early days and may recall her attendance at that of her friend, Beck Porter, at a popular tent mission held on the lawns of Hoggs in Killen Village in 1952 and at the Crew Bridge missions. The annual Easter Conventions held at

the Manor House Hotel in Enniskillen in the 1950s and 60s were always a big attraction to Maggie and Beck and they never missed if health permitted. Margaret Cole was also one of the founder members of the Free Presbyterian Church in Castlederg. Speaking from the Cole Baby Unit in Kenya, Rodney Davidson, the Fame Field Leader, says, “The facilities here grow year on year but, it must be remembered, so too does the need. FAME Mission has at present a Medical Clinic, an Orphanage caring for almost two hundred children, a hugely busy Christian Resource Centre and an evangelistic programme reaching schools right across our region. We have also an important Prison Ministry. In each one of our ventures we are preaching the Gospel of Christ to eager ears and open hearts. “The Cole Baby Unit is our latest addition to an already full programme, built to address the specific needs of infants and babies who are abandoned or orphaned. “Many of these children are cast into pit latrines to die a lingering death and we are delighted that we have now a facility to provide a safe and loving environment to these the most vulnerable of children. It is heart breaking for my wife, Alma, who works alongside me and I to see these tiny mites arrive with us but, by God’s Grace, to witness how, in a few short weeks, most can be nursed back to health and happiness. We are looking forward to Alan and Irene coming in March for the official opening of the Cole Baby Unit and I trust they will carry back positive reports from our village to Maggie’s home town back in Northern Ireland. Already the Cole Baby Unit has proved to be a venture that has touched many hearts back home and we trust that it will touch many more as we progress and grow. “None of what we have here would be possible without the direct, continuing and active support of people in Northern Ireland and we – and the children in our care – are enormously grateful to those who make this vital work possible. As our dedication to Mrs Cole demonstrates, we are delighted to have the opportunity to remember and honour our friends from across the seas.” For more information and photographs on the Cole Baby Unit and FAME visit fame.uk.net

Liamy is a regular columnist with the Mayo News. 2.30pm on the Saturday will be another special day for the sick. Once again hundreds of people from Fermanagh and neighbouring counties will be welcomed to a healing Mass just for them, with refreshments and music. On Sunday, March 8 the speaker at the 10.30am, 12noon and 4pm Masses will be the newly ordained Passionist Priest, Fr Gareth Thomas C.P. Gareth is now a member of the Holy Cross Community and

‘Goodbye frumpy, hello slinky’ 27-year-old Zoe Jones spent years avoiding nights out because she felt frumpy next to her slim friends. Now she’s lost nearly 6st, dropped four dress sizes and feels on top of the world. “I used to come up with every excuse in the book not to join my friends on nights out because, while I loved spending time with them, I hated how I looked and felt. Now I love dressing up and the girls know they can rely on me to be first on the dance floor. I finally feel like a normal 27-year-old and I’m loving it, in fact I joke I’m reliving my teenage years! “I’d always been a little bigger than my friends but piled on more weight both during my time at University and afterwards when I left home for good. When I moved out of my mum and dad’s house into my own place, I found cooking for one tricky and would usually end up eating something made from a readymade sauce that was enough for at least two people. Then boredom would set in and I’d spend my evenings lounging in front of the TV grazing on crisps and sweets. I was stuck in a rut. “My poor mum and dad bore the brunt of my bad moods. I was really insecure about my appearance, I’d get upset easily and my confidence was at an all-

Countdown to the Westminster Election 7th May 2015

Campaign against austerity will continue - Doherty West Tyrone Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty said the recent vote on welfare in the Assembly ensured unique welfare protections will be in place in the North but vowed the campaign against austerity will continue. The local MP said; “A society is measured by how it looks after those least able to care for themselves. The Tory welfare cuts agenda was and is counter to that ethos. So Sinn Féin from 2011 onwards opposed the proposed welfare cuts and insisted welfare protection was absolutely fundamental for all citizens. That is why Sinn Féin politically campaigned against welfare cuts alongside trade unions and grassroots communities.

This principle guided our strategy during the Stormont House negotiations. Last December, during the negotiations, which led to the Stormont House Agreement, both the UUP and the SDLP agreed to a welfare package, which fell well short of what was subsequently achieved between Sinn Féin and the DUP. The other three Executive parties later accepted on December 19th that enhanced package. The initial deal, supported by the SDLP and the UUP, did not include the supplementary payment fund – worth £125m over six years – or its protections for children with disabilities, adults with severe disabilities or the long-term sick. The SDLP and the UUP did however agree a two-year loss of benefit sanction. They voted to strip claimants of

Your vote is your voice, register to vote - McHugh With only 11 weeks to go until this year’s Westminster election Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairi McHugh has called on all voters to ensure that they are registered.

Doherty welcomes major DCAL investment to community groups in Castlederg and Strabane and the purchase of craft equipment for community cultural activity. Other organisations within the Mourne Area Partnership will benefit from the funding allocations including Cairde Republican Ex-Prisoners (£10,000) the Strabane Health Improvement Project (£6,000) and Strabane Sigerson’s GAA who will receive £9,500. “Other groups which will benefit from provision of new equipment are Churchtown Community Association, Castlederg, Lisnafin/ Ardnalee community group, SECA, Fountain Street Community group, Sollus Centre, SAFE and Strabane District Council. “Provision of equipment will also allow these groups to enhance their existing provision and help them to make a real difference to people’s lives. This is an example of how community groups working in partnership can deliver social change.

“Funding is being provided to organisations for outdoor, event delivery and sporting equipment. Strabane and District Caring Services will receive £45,000 for a minibus for community transport

The legislation was passed and confirmed welfare protections in the North, but that cannot be taken for granted. The ideological war by the conservative right wing against the welfare state has not stopped. The upcoming election is a choice between social solidarity and collective interest or the agenda of the British and Irish political elites and their economic interests.”

Irish Language Consultation Councillor Maoliosa McHugh

Speaking this week Cllr McHugh said: “It is important that everyone has the opportunity to place themselves on the electoral register as we approach a number of elections over the next few years. We will be working with the Electoral Office over the coming weeks to ensure as many people as possible can exercise their electoral franchise. I would encourage anyone who has yet to register to do so as soon as possible as being on the electoral register not only allows you to vote but in many cases is an imperative to financial transactions such as acquiring a mortgage. People can contact our office directly on 02871886464 for assistance or contact any of your local Sinn Féin representatives to ensure you have your vote in this year’s Westminster election on May 7th. Your vote is your voice. Use your voice and use your vote.”

Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty has welcomed the announcement from DCAL Minister Caral NiChuilin that she has committed to investing in a number of projects based in and around the Strabane and Castlederg area, as part of the overall commitment which was given to building on the success of the City of Culture and to create a lasting legacy for the North West. A range of projects are being supported, from arts and theatre to the purchase of outdoor and event delivery equipment. The investment will also see the purchase of high tech digital media and IT equipment for four cultural hubs such as i-pads, computers, scanners and colour printers amongst other items. Speaking this week the local MP said, “I welcome this major investment announcement from DCAL Minister Caral NiChuilin towards community organizations in the Strabane district and I welcome her visit to West Tyrone this week to meet the groups which will benefit from the funding. I have worked alongside the minister over the past number of months identifying areas of need within the district and where this funding could be targeted best.

their benefits for two years and are now posing as the protectors of the most vulnerable. By standing firm against the London-Dublin Tory axis, Sinn Féin achieved a welfare system better than the one in Britain, by an average of £94m per year. This represents the per capita equivalent of a €2.2bn welfare fund in the 26 counties.

“I would like to commend the groups involved for the hard work put in working alongside DCAL officials to ensure the Strabane district benefitted from this fundingI would also like to commend Sinn Féin Minister Caral NiChuilin for committing to the North West once again by developing innovative approaches to economic and social challenges.”

Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Maoliosa McHugh has said that the consultation launched by the DCAL Minister Carál Ní Chuilín is an opportunity for Irish language enthusiasts to help shape Acht Na Gaeilge. Cllr McHugh said, “The consultation launched by the Culture Minister Carál Ni Chuilín is an opportunity for people to help shape Acht na Gaeilge. “The Irish language is a living language with more and more people communicating through the medium of Irish and these people have a right to conduct all their business through Irish. “Acht na Gaeilge is a commitment under the St Andrews Agreement and will help bring equality to those who use the language on a daily basis including legal rights. “The use of the language is a threat to no one and people should embrace diversity by engaging with the consultation which will last for twelve weeks.” “The consultation can be accessed on www.dcaini.gov.uk/index/quick-links/consultation.htm and I would urge people within the Strabane district to make your voice heard and make a submission before the 12 week consultation period ends.”

Every morning I wake up with my head full of stuff. There are the things I should have done, the things I perhaps should not have done, the guilt feelings around someone I needed to visit, the exercise I did not complete or some other negative self-talk. I found that exercise was really good at dispersing those thoughts and feelings however I soon found ways to let the exercise go. Perhaps the weather was bad and I could not do my usual run or outside stuff. I could usually come up with some really valid excuse not to be bothering myself with exercise or the like. I would then spend many moments of the day ‘giving out’ to myself for not doing it. I found such thinking very demotivating and destructive for me. I then was introduced to a concept called ‘Morning Pages’ which was developed by Julia Cameron who used it as one of her ‘basic tools’ in her best -selling book ‘The Artist’s Way’. Morning Pages involves writing three A4 size pages in long-hand of all the thoughts that go through your mind first thing in the morning. It is just a stream of consciousness of anything that flows through your mind at that particular time. They are written first thing when you are still bleary eyed and perhaps just not fully awake. They do not have to make sense and you can scribble them illegibly if you are afraid someone might find them and read them. You can also dispose of them when you are finished. It is unnecessary to read them back. There is really no ‘wrong’ way to do Morning Pages’. When I heard this first I decided immediately that Morning Pages were not for me. I seriously could not imagine myself waking up and writing three

A concept called ‘Morning Pages’ which was developed by Julia Cameron (inset) and is explained in detail in her book ‘The Artist’s Way’ is a powerful way of extracting the negativity in our lives in such a simple concept.

full pages of gibberish each morning. I was however asked to persevere with them for a month. Even though initially the month seemed like a lifetime to me I committed to doing so. I left a pencil and some writing paper on my bedside table and went to sleep. I woke early the next morning and noticed the paper on the table and got that ‘couldn’t be bothered’ feeling however I remembered I had committed to doing Morning Pages for one month so I got writing. I simply wrote whatever came into my head. Lots of unconnected thoughts, to – do lists and things I did or failed to do the day before etc. Not a whole lot of sense in any of it I thought. Still I continued until I had written 3 full A4 size pages. I was amazed that during the day those thoughts

never bothered me once. It was like taking a stone out of my shoe. It seemed that by writing those annoying things down their energy was spent. I had changed negative thoughts or psychic energy into the written word and they had somehow completely lost their power over me. I still do Morning pages each morning and I am so glad I do as they have liberated me from potential destructive energies of negative self-talk. Have a go for one month and experience the liberating feelings for yourself. Like me I am sure you will be glad you did so. You can also YouTube Julia Cameron and Morning pages and find out more about Morning pages from her directly. Have fun Tom Herron

The walk will take in the beautiful views along the water’s edge and the two bridges of the City on March 21. This walk offers a real opportunity for everybody to participate in, regardless of fitness level, and organisers of looking to spread the word beyond the Maiden City. Speaking to the ‘Herald’, Caroline Crothers from Leukaemia and Lymphoma NI said, “We are looking for Strabane people to encourage friends, family, work colleagues and pets to join you in this fantastic walk. The Arts Academy Now Open In Strabane The high quality of talent in Strabane’s performing arts has been well documented down through the years. Yet despite the undoubted quality we see on the local stage, a central headquarters, where people of all ages can learn and develop within the arts has been lacking. The establishment of the Arts Academy, situated on Market Street, has been long overdue. Where once people asked in vain where they or their child can learn guitar, have singing lessons or learn to play the drums – they now have the answer. The Academy was the brainchild of local musicians David Oliver and Gerry Strawbridge. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ from the impressive Academy facility in Market Street, David tells us that it was an idea he had carried for quite a while. “I know there are lots of people out there teaching music but there has never been anywhere central as such, like a little hub where things can grow and get bigger. I could see that there was room and a need for it in Strabane. By complete coincidence I was chatting to Gerry Strawbridge one day and he mentioned the exact same idea. We agreed that there

ners to top level and also caters for group bookings. “We take all different ages, all different levels. We’ve even had father and son learning guitar together, things like that, which is really encouraging to see. We also have kids’ singing lessons on a Saturday morning, too, which was another big factor in getting this set up. Where did you go if you wanted singing lessons for your child? Now they can come here at an early age and develop the confidence to sing and perform in a fun way that will serve them well as they take it further in years to come,” says David. In an attempt to embrace as many aspects of the arts as possible the Academy will also extend to drama and theatre after Easter. When the space is developed it will also extend to cater for dance. “Down the line I’d like to see the Arts Academy put on shows and events featuring those who have developed their skills here. Grades and qualifications are available of course, but for me the main objective is about experience and fun, and people getting the opportunity to do something that they couldn’t do previously. It’s not all about quality and grading; it’s about the craic and buzz one gets from the Performing Arts,” concludes David.

“It’s a work in progress and I’d like to see it running even better in six to 12 months. Interest is increasing, there’s an appetite out there for it so we need to be able to accommodate that growing appetite. As I said, there are a lot of people doing something similar but for a lot of interested The New Arts Academy on Market Street, Strabane.(below) The excellent facilities on offer. parties out there, they still don’t know where to was no point us doing it independently from each start or where to go when they or their child wants to other,” he explains. • Do not put sofas, chairs, tables, shelves or bookcases near to a window blind, as children love to climb. New European standards were introduced in February 2014 aimed at improving blind cord/chain safety making it a requirement that new blinds must be “safe by design” or be supplied with appropriate child safety devices installed, however, there are still 1-200 million window blinds across the UK that do not comply with the new European standards. Therefore it is advisable that house holders with existing blinds visit window blind manufacturers and retailers to ensure compliance with the new standards. As part of the WHEAP’s under 5s home safety assessment, blind cord cleats and cord/chain tidies are provided if required.

Strabane District Council’s Western Home Environmental Assessment Project (WHEAP), held an Information Day in the local Asda Store on Friday 30th January 2015, where information leaflets were distributed and blind cord/chain cleat hooks and blind cord/chain tidies used to secure the cords were given to members of the public. WHEAP’s Home Assessment Officer Olivia Lagan was joined by Councillor Michelle Mc Mackin, the Chief Environmental Health Officer, Paddy Cosgrove and Niamh Curran, Environmental Health Student. The aim of the event was to highlight the dangers of blind cords in the home to members of the public and to inform them of the preventative steps that can be taken to avoid tragedies associated with them. Paddy Cosgrove, Chief Environmental Health Officer said: “Thousands of homes in Northern Ireland may contain a potentially lethal trap for children, especially those under the age of three. They can become entangled in the loop created by a blind or curtain cord and are often unable to call for help and lack the strength to get the cord away from their neck. It is estimated that children can die as quickly as within 18 seconds of becoming entangled. Since 1999 at least 30 children from across the UK have died as a result of blind cords. 3 of these tragic deaths have occurred in Northern Ireland from 2006, with the most recent being in November 2014 in Comber, County Down when a little girl lost her life after becoming entangled in the blind cords.” The British Blind & Shutter Association (BBSA) has produced a leaflet, via its “Make It Safe Campaign”, to show how to reduce the risk from looped blind cords and chains. This highlights a number of practical, simple precautions to reduce the risk:
