Large turnout expected for Donegal Marathon this weekend From front page Thanking people across the county for their continued support, Dessie Larkin, Chairperson of the Donegal Marathon, said: “The Donegal Marathon is the ‘People’s Marathon’ and we’d like to thank and acknowledge the support of the public, without whom this event wouldn’t be possible. Running has become so popular and there’s still time for anyone sitting on the fence to get on board. The Dublin Marathon has already sold out this year, but we’ll be accepting registrations until this Saturday. I’d also like to remind people that the Team Challenge Cup is a great way to experience a Marathon for anyone who doesn’t feel confident running the half or full race. We’ve been working with the Gardaí and race marshals to ensure the safety of everyone participating in the event including spectators and we’re looking forward to a great day. Hopefully the weather will be in our favour. I also want

to thank the many physiotherapists from across Donegal who will be stationed at the Aura Leisure Centre giving runners complimentary pre and post treatments.” In partnership with Letterkenny Community Development Project (CDP), the Donegal Marathon will host a family fun event at the Aura Leisure Centre on Sunday, 21. Taking place from 11.00am to 1.00pm, the fun day will include children’s face-painting, characters, games and much more. Meanwhile, anyone who would like to get involved with the event and assist with any volunteer roles is asked to contact the Donegal Volunteer Centre on 074 91 26740. For more information on the Donegal Marathon and to register visit the Donegal Marathon website or Facebook page. By bringing communities together through a community tourism initiative for the diaspora this event is supported in partnership with Donegal County Council, Fáilte Ireland and IPB Insurance.

Winner of the Joule Donegal International Rally, Manus Kelly, will officially launch the Donegal Marathon this weekend. Donegal’s fastest man on four wheels will be at the starting line on Sunday 21st August to see the runners off. FOREWORD For many the Troubles are a distant memory and for others they are a reminder of life in the Six Counties under Stormont rule. Martin Monaghan, originally from Ederney in Fermanagh and now resident here in north Donegal is one such figure. Because he was imprisoned in Long Kesh, then Magilligan before making good his escape in the autumn of 1975. His story is an authentic account of growing up in Ederney steeped in the republican tradition and in Irish music where two uncles were leaders of the Pride of Erin Ceilidh Band. Like so many of his generation at the start of the Civil Rights Movement, he had a political awakening inspired by figures like Bernadette Devlin and Michael Farrell. And so in 1969 he joined Oglaigh na hEireann. As the storm clouds gathered across the northern landscape Martin was arrested by the RUC on August 15th 1972 while transporting a bomb near Irvinstown and subsequently imprisoned. This book is essentially a personal account of his place in the Troubles. It is a no holds barred account of State brutality and abuse that so many like-minded people were also forced to suffer. and in Magilligan in August 1974 is presented in graphic detail with amazing clarity of the everyday conditions endured by the prisoners. But Martin Monaghan managed to escape from Magilligan in early November 1975 in the most bizarre set of circumstances as he assumed the identity of another man. That man was a lecturer at Magee College and the New University of Ulster. He was Brian Lacey and he had taken a part time post giving history lessons to the prisoners. Brian and Martin were supposed to bear a similar presence apart from the hair styles. However that did not deter Martin’s colleagues from planning the escape and so it came to pass on the eventful evening. And it was not until 29 years later that both men met up in Letterkenny. The journey to freedom was filled with drama as the escape to ‘safe houses’ in Derry finally ended in Buncrana. Along the way, Martin met and befriended the late Cllr. Eddie Fullerton, Pat Doherty and many more like-minded people here in Donegal as he came to call the village of Carrigart his new home. Martin Monaghan was finally pardoned from completing the remainder of his prison sentence in 2001 and at last was able to return home to meet his family. In the meantime his brother Gerard who was 23 years of age lost his life in a road traffic accident. Martin was not able to attend the wake or funeral for fear of being arrested.

Martin Monaghan pictured with his new book, A Chance Encounter, A remarkable Escape, a true story. Now available in all local bookshops.

Martin escaped from Magilligan in early November 1975 by assuming the identity of another man. He managed to pass through 14 checks without being detected as he made it safely into County Donegal In the intervening years he’s been able to travel freely and now lives quietly here in rural Donegal. This account his life as a republican volunteer is a well paced account that gives an insight into what life was like in the Long Kesh and how people like Martin

Monaghan survived the regime of terror and abuses meted out in the name of democracy by the Westminster parliament. John McAteer: Editor, Tirconaill Tribune

It’s a Family Affair

At present, the Byrne Brothers host a weekly show every Wednesday in Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey from 8pm to 10pm.

Over the past five years Donegal’s Byrne Brothers have been taking the Irish entertainment scene by storm. Their unique brand of traditional Irish tunes and songs rocked up with dance beats have seen audiences of all ages flood to their shows. An appearance on the hugely popular Late Late Toy Show last Christmas, which had an estimated audience of 1.8 million viewers, has proven to be a major game changer; opening the doors of opportunity across the Atlantic for the boys. In many ways, the Byrne Brothers have grown up on stage. Luca, 12, plays button accordion, Cajon, whistle and dances; Finn, 10, plays banjo, mandolin, whistle, fiddle, bodhran and is a two- time Ulster champion dancer; Dempsey, 7, sings, plays bodhran, fiddle and whistle; he is also a dancer and general joker, performing since he was two! The young trio are joined by their dad, Tommy, on uilleann pipes, fiddle, bagpipes, whistles, bodhran and vocals; he is also a ceili caller and dance music producer.

Tommy’s wife, Julie, is from Ballymena but her mother hails from Donegal. The couple were forever drawn to the west-coast of Ireland for this and other reasons. “We’ve always been big into our surfing, and with Julie’s mammy living there, the west-coast was always calling us so we moved to Mountcharles. Music has always been part of our lives and when the boys came along it naturally became part of theirs, too,” Tommy explains.

For four years, the Dubliner ran a show in the Central Hotel called ‘A Slice of Ireland’, which all three boys were involved in. They started off playing bodhran and carrying flags. It soon progressed to playing fiddle and doing a spot of Irish dancing. Anyone assuming that this was under the tutelage of their father would be in for a surprise. “No, Dubliner Tommy has been involved in music for sure they wouldn’t listen to me,” laughs Tommy. many years, with a background that started off in “Donna Harkin in Ramelton is their main teacher, Temple Bar in his home City. so it’s an hour’s drive every week for practice.” “This was back when Temple Bar was a pretty new thing. I played for all the tourists. After that I started to see a bit of the world, playing in the likes of Thailand, Bangladesh and New Zealand. In New Zealand I was part of a show that was very like Riverdance, with about thirty dancers on the stage. I’ve also performed in holiday resorts in the likes of Ibiza, where I met my wife, and Santa Ponsa,” he recalls.

about

yellow pepper Carol Meenan and Kieran are a husband and wife team, passionate about their restaurant.... Back in the 1890s, things were built to last.

Nothing but the freshest home grown produce is used in the fine dishes cooked at the Yellow Pepper Restaurant, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny.

Carol Meean and Kieran Davis are the proprietors of the Yellow Pepper Restaurant on Lower Main Street, Letterkenny. With over two decades in the restaurant industry and based on a foundation of an old shirt factory, this rustic restaurant encompasses the freshest of ingredients with the best value for customers. Many enjoy the amazing vibrant atmosphere that this restaurant creates as a backdrop for an all round excellent dining experience. Your taste buds will be tantalised with the freshest and finest ingredients, Kieran himself grows delicate vegetables that are often hard to buy and difficult to transport. “We have an abundance of vegetables and soft fruits in summer time, the greens

are organic and picked daily by myself, so we design a lot of dishes from that,” he described. The kitchen is headed up by Seamus McGloin and his team, constructing dishes based on the freshest of ingredients. A ‘Donegal Seafood Platter’ of, fresh mussels, squid, salmon skewer and mackerel, along with a cup of homemade chowder, is one of the popular items on offer.

Local Produce

“We take our food very seriously. It has to be local produce. We take the best ingredients we can get,” Carol explained. We have great relationships with local producers and farmers who provide us with the freshest of ingredients. The couple have a simple, shared food philosophy, “100% of everything that we

spend goes into the local economy.” Carol explained how Letterkenny is a great base for tourists to travel around the rest of the North West and how they love the ethical features that the Yellow Pepper Restaurant provides for diners. Another wonderful feature at the restaurant is their very own aging room that allows the Chefs’ to buy meat on the bone for dry aging and wet-aged meat straight from the factory. This is all to do with their ethos and keeping the customer in mind, extra value can be offered to the customer coupled with the extended use of homegrown vegetables. “The idea is that we have an advantage, price-wise and we can pass that onto the customers so that we give really good value,” expressed Kieran.

And that’s why the McIntyre, Hog and Marsh shirt factory lives on as one of Donegal’s best-known restaurants. The original wooden floors, the old stone walls and those iron pillars are a wonderful home for the Yellow Pepper. When we moved in back in 1994, we wanted to have a restaurant which was like the building – based on solid values of quality and attention to detail, and open to improvement and change. We pride ourselves in paying attention. To our meals, our ingredients, and our menus. To our staff, so important to the experience of the restaurant. And above all, to our customers. We also try to add to Donegal’s reputation for friendliness. On those solid foundations has the success of the Yellow Pepper Restaurant been built. With an eye to the past, and the future in mind. You’re guaranteed good food and a warm welcome seven days a week at The Yellow Pepper Restaurant.

We take our food very seriously. It has to be local produce. We take the best ingredients we can get.

People come from all over the world to play and take part. Said organiser, Gerry McLaughlin, “We’ve had acts from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Holland and France as well as from England, Scotland and Wales, as well as both parts of Ireland.”

Appearing: Al Diesan, from Sardinia, arguably Europe’s best Dylan act.

said Dylan before chuckling loudly to Bobby’s relief, who for a brief second, thought that Dylan had brought him all the way there to remonstrate with him. Al Diesan, who has played all the top DylanFests in Europe and also the big one in California, makes his annual pilgrimage from Sardinia to Moville’s DylanFest. Al is arguably Europe’s top Dylan act. To get from Cagliari to Moville and back involves taking six planes, two buses and four taxis.

While in California this year, Al talked one of the USA’s top Dylan acts, Sean Gallagher (obviously an Irish connection there), to come and play at this year’s DylanFest in Moville. Said organiser Gerry, “It’s a mouth watering line-up this year. It will be 4 days of great music, and hopefully, good weather.” Those seeking further info on the festival should see CraicOn.com.

Last week in the Mount Errigal Hotel, the 2016 Loretto Convent Letterkenny Prom took place. The theme this year was ‘a night under the stars’ and the ladies were looking absolutely stunning and the men were suited, booted and looking handsome! There was a special moment when balloons were released in memory of past pupils Tory Johnston and Bronwyn Coyle who passed away. A large crowd of 6th years arrived for the prom after 6pm and they were joined by the 5th years for the ‘after party’ a little later on. A special thank you must go out to the Prom Committee who worked tirelessly all year to stage such a successful and enjoyable event.

WEDDING SPEECH ONE LINERS Are you the best man, the groom, father of the bride, or even the bride herself who sometimes makes a speech these days! Well if you are, here are some of the best ‘one liners’ that you can add to your speech to get the laughs.... “The bride looks absolutely stunning, the groom looks absolutely stunned!”

“She is a great housekeeper - after ever divorce she gets to keep the house.” “Live each day as if it were your last - and each night as if it were your first!” “For newly married couples, there is a progression of rings: the engagement ring, the wedding ring and the suffering!”

“They married for better or for worse He couldn’t have done better, and she couldn’t have done worse!”

“The groom was not a pretty baby - his mother got morning sickness after he was born.”

“Love is blind and marriage is an institution so why go to a blind institution.”

“I walked up the aisle and said ‘I do’. And I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Valuable fashion advice for the mother of the bride or groom

Mother of the bride? this is your guide... After the guests shed a tear at how stunning the bride is all the attention will turn to you, the mother of the bride or groom! Read our eight crucial bits of advice to help you look your best!

Colour Confidence There is no doubt that wearing the right colour, especially close to your face, can make you look radiant and younger. Then think about how your colour choice will look in the photographs. Consider any colour themes that the bride and groom have chosen and also chat with the partner’s mum to ensure your outfits don’t clash.

Dress your body Your outfit should work with your body shape, not the other way around. Wearing an outfit that is not suitable for your body shape could add pounds to your waistline. Follow one simple rule as a starting point. If you are curvy, opt for styles and fabrics that flow with your curves. Go for silk, chiffon, jersey, fine knits etc. If you have a straighter body, fabrics with a bit of structure will work well. Think cotton, satin, fine wool or linen.

It’s okay to be you Why do we always feel at a wedding that we should go for something we wouldn’t normally wear? Just think of the photos. You want to be reminded of what a great day it was and not have a ‘what was I thinking’ moment. If you normally live in jeans then why not opt for a smart trouser suit instead of a dress. If you’re not used to a day in heels there are some beautiful flat styles available. Be true to your unique style and you will look amazing.

Comfort Comfort is paramount. If your skirt keeps riding up, or your shoes are too high or you’re just too hot you’ll spend the day feeling miserable. When trying on, dance around the changing room, sit down, cross your legs, lift your arms – really put the outfit through its paces before you part with your money. bought new shoes, wear them around the house a few times to break them in!

Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise! These days you don’t need to have matching bag, shoes and hat. Introducing a couple of colours can make your outfit more interesting and be more flattering. Toning your shoes to your dress colour can make you look taller and a contrasting clutch can draw attention to a slim waist. If you are undecided

on the hat, or fascinator debate, then try on lots, but consider this. With a hat you will almost certainly get hat hair and you might get unwelcome shadows across your face. Alternatively, a fascinator, or decorative slide can be worn all day with your hair styled around it and are universally easier and more comfortable to wear.

Think beyond the wedding! Buying a more simple, understated dress and jacket and really going to town with the accessories is a great idea. Not only that, you might even wear it after the wedding! You can separate the pieces and choose different accessories to change the look completely. Team the jacket with trousers you have, or wear the dress with a cardigan for meetings, dinner dates, christenings.

Venue These days you can get married just about anywhere so it’s important to think about your outfit in relation to the venue. What you choose for a beach wedding can be a little more relaxed, whilst a formal outfit would be appropriate for a church, or country house setting. If the wedding is set on a lawn, wedge shoes, or flats will give more stability than heels.

Finishing touches If you think you will be changing your hair then discuss it with your hairdresser as soon as possible. Hair never grows quickly when we want it to. Also use the time to discuss styling around your chosen headwear. Good make up will complete your look and clever use of textures and colours will make you look and feel great. Try a make up lesson, and don’t forget, waterproof mascara is a must.

Welcome to Gardener’s World brought to you by John Sumner from the Gardencentre, Letterkenny, each month John will offer his expertise & experience to help you maintain your garden. General Tasks & Garden Maintenance

The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?

Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’

Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year.

Fleshy-leafed plants Some plants with thick water-filled leaves can withstand dry conditions and purple-leafed sedums, house leeks, phormiums, eucomis and succulents will never flag. However their soft stems may well attract vine weevil. Check by tugging the main stem away from the roots. If healthy it will stay attached. 1. Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’ This wonderfully poised, upright sedum combines dark, neatly crimped leaves with ruby-red flowers. These are extremely attractive to hoverflies and bees. Simply the best sedum.

Tighter cattle supplies brings more bite to beef trade as UK prices continue to rise – IFA

IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman Angus Woods said tighter cattle supplies this week have seen more farmers negotiate 5c/kg above the quoted prices. He said factories are finding it much more difficult to get adequate numbers of stock and many are paying a base of €3.85 for steers and €3.95 base for heifers. He said the trade is also being helped by very good grass growth and good thrive. He added that the better demand is also being reflected in the mart with more factory buyers around the ring for finished cattle. Angus Woods said farmers needed to dig in hard on the price and demand more than the quotes. He said the reality is cattle numbers in the factory lairages are very scarce and agents and procurement managers are very anxious for stock.

He said, “Agents have been told not to leave stock behind them.” Angus Woods said cattle prices in our main export market in the UK continue to rise, up another 1p/kg last week. He said UK prices are now up 26p/kg since the end of April. He pointed out that UK cattle prices are up 13p/kg since the Brexit decision in late June. As of July 30th, the UK R3 steer price was €3.46/kg, which is equivalent to €4.30/kg. On numbers, Angus Woods said the weekly kill was at 30,586, with the total kill running 26,203 ahead of last year’s levels. Angus Woods said factories are also stronger for cows this week with more outlets paying €2.90/3.10 for P and O grade cows. Better cows are making €3.20/3.30.

There must be no stalling on further milk price increases – Healy

Speaking this week, IFA President Joe Healy said there must be no stalling by co-ops on further milk price increases, and he would meet them in person to convey this message over the coming weeks. The IFA President said major milk price improvements are both necessary to boost farmer confidence and their badly damaged cash flow and justified by a real market recovery. He called on co-ops that had yet to decide on the July price, especially those at the bottom of the league, to first follow the Lakeland, Glanbia and Arrabawn example by increasing July prices, but also for all co-ops to budget and plan for significant further milk price increases for August and beyond. “Our call for milk price increases is firmly founded in a very real market recovery, which has seen EU dairy commodity returns increase by 5c/l in the last three months, to an early August level equivalent, after 5c/l processing costs, to a farmgate milk price of 25.38c/l + VAT (26.7c/l incl VAT),” Mr Healy said. “Co-ops can be confident about increasing milk prices: the long awaited dairy market recovery has really taken hold. It reflects much slower growth or even decreased milk production in Europe, but

also globally, and relatively healthy demand growth despite the Russian ban and lower oil revenues. Indeed, NZ business bank ASB Markets have predicted this week a 12 to 15% increase in this afternoon’s GDT price for whole milk powder, based on the evolution of NZX futures in the last few days,” he said. IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Sean O’Leary added: “While many dairy farmers I spoke to at the Tullamore Show took heart from the recent milk price announcements, all remained seriously worried about cash flow pressure and their inability to make ends meet as merchant credit, superlevy, tax and utility bills pile in. Farmers need every last cent the market is returning, and thankfully the market is improving relatively rapidly.” “It is now up to all our milk purchasing co-ops to ensure that they first all lift their July milk price in a meaningful way, and then plan for significant additional price increases for August and beyond,” he concluded.

Lamb price stronger with tight supplies – IFA IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman John Lynskey has said the lamb trade is stronger this week with factories paying €4.75 to €4.85 and tops of €4.90 paid. He said factories are finding it difficult to get the numbers and are having to pay 20c/30c above quoted prices. He said weights have also moved up to 22kgs everywhere. On ewes, John Lynskey said there is more demand from the factories and prices have moved up with €2.70/kg available. John Lynskey said the live export trade is more active with buyers moving to put together lambs ahead of the Id-ul-Adha Muslin festival, which starts on September 13th. In the UK, John Lynskey said lambs have also kicked on in price, with the auction marts paying

186p/kg live weight, which is the equivalent of about €5.00/kg deadweight including VAT. On numbers John Lynskey said the latest kill figures for 6th August show the weekly kill back at 44,734 compared to 52,968 for the same week in 2015. However the overall kill is running 2.0% ahead of 2015 levels, according to Department figures. The IFA Sheep Chairman said the Department of Agriculture released details of the 2015 National Sheep Census last week and the key message is that the ewe flock has stabilised and risen slightly by 82,627, and now stands at 2,503,011 ewes.

The Blacksmith’s Hands Story I found this story really struck a chord with me so I decided to share it with you. A young man went to seek an important position at a large printing company. He passed the initial interview and went to meet the director for the final interview. The director looked at his CV, and asked, “Have you ever received a scholarship for school?” “No,” the man replied. “It was your father who paid for your studies?” “Yes.” “Where does your father work?” “My father is a blacksmith.” Then, the director asked the young man to show him his hands. They were soft and perfect. “Have you ever helped your parents at their job?” the director continued. “Never. My parents always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, he can do the job better than I can.” “I have a request for you,” said the director. “When you go home today, go and wash the hands of your father, and then come see me tomorrow morning.” The young man left feeling good about the interview. That night, when he returned home, he asked his father if he would allow him to wash his hands.

his father’s workshop. That night, the father and son talked for a long time. The next morning, the young man returned to the director’s office. The director noticed the tears in his eyes.

His father felt rather strange about the request, but agreed. The young man washed his father’s hands, little by little. It was the first time that he noticed all the wrinkles and scars on his father’s hands. Some bruises on his hands were so painful that his skin shuddered upon being touched. It was the first time that the young man recognised what it meant for this pair of hands to have worked every day to be able to pay for his studies. The bruises on his father’s hands were the price that he paid for his child’s education and future. After cleaning his father’s hands, the young man stood in silence, then began to tidy up

“Can you tell me what you did, and what you learned yesterday?” he asked the young man. “I washed my father’s hands. When I finished, I stayed and cleaned his workshop.” He continued, “Now I know what it is to appreciate and recognise that, without my parents, I would not be who I am today. By helping my father, I now realise how difficult it is to do something on my own. I have come to appreciate the importance and the value in helping the family.” The director looked at him with an earnest expression. “This is what I look for in my people. I want to employ someone who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the hardship of others. You are hired.” You can find this and other inspiring stories at:www.littlethings.com/father-and-son-lifelessons Until the next time Tom Herron

Letterkenny Golf Club Notes

Spence finishes strong to claim the 2016 Captain’s Prize

Keith Spence, winner of Letterkenny Golf Club’s Captain’s Prize receiving his prize from club Captain Ivan Fuery.

Mid July saw Barnhill host the foremost ‘Major’ of the year when almost two hundred members and guests took to the lush fairways of this ‘hidden gem’ to compete for Mr. Ivan Fuery’s Captain’s Prize. Whilst welcoming the large field and stableweather, it was Ulster Cup team vice-captain Keith Spence (12) who took topspot on the podium for the presentation recently. Level par thru first six holes, impending disaster struck at The Isle (7th) where a double bogey followed by a ‘blank’ at Greenhill (8th) had him taking the turn with a mediocre 19pts but, with years of competitive and matchplay golf experience behind him, Keith’s

resolve brought him birdies at 10th (Cornagill) and 18th (Stockade) for an inward nine of 22pts, a total return of 40pts and a better back nine score to relegate Eddie Margey (12) to runner-up spot. Eddie’s outward nine consisted of birdie at Swilly (3rd) and double bogey at 7th but, despite his birdie at 18th, another double bogey at Hunters Home (13th) had him lose out on the ultimate prize. In third place on another B.O.T. was club stalwart Charlie Coughlan (10) whose18pts on front nine was followed by a back nine of 21pts with the help of birdie at 18th which no doubt pushed Eugene Mc Keever (19) to fourth place. Gross prize was collected by the man in form of late, Kieran Sweeney (6) with 33pts gross, student prize won by Conor Friel (5) with 34pts, seniors prize was won by Pat Mc Grath (25) on 38pts and nines prizes were won by Johnny

new car reviews

The Ford S-MAX still bosses the MPV Segment! The Ford S-MAX has always been a popular choice with families in Ireland looking for a large family car, and even with the rise of the SUV, there’s still demand for a good, honest MPV, especially if it has seven seats. The new S-MAX also does a good job of looking sleek and dynamic despite its hulking mass, quite good looking compared to its rivals. The current model arrived in 2015 and the styling is quite a gentle evolution of its predecessor, Ford’s new trapezoidal grille being the most striking change. All round it looks a bit more chiselled and defined.

Upmarket trim The S-MAX is based on the Mondeo and the design and finish of the cabin is very similar. Ford has had a good shot of pushing the new S-MAX upmarket and it all looks pleasing to the eye and the material quality is good. In Titanium models, the dash is built around the Sync 2 infotainment system and touchscreen, which looks very well indeed. There are three individual seats in row 2, all three with Isofix child seat fixtures, and these passengers get loads of legroom and headroom. The S-MAX has seven seats as standard, but is really what is known as a ‘5+2’: the two seats in the very back are for children rather than adults as the legroom is tight, though the seats in row

2 can be slid forward to create more room. The extra seats can fold into the floor when not in use and yield a large boot that can be easily stacked to the roof. With row 3 seats in place, boot space is impacted but there is still room for a few bags. There are two trim levels for the S-MAX on the Irish market: Zetec and Titanium. Zetec models come well-equipped including 17” alloy wheels, fog lights, daytime running lights, quickclear windscreen, Ford Sync, front and rear parking sensors, leather steering wheel, dual zone air con and keyless start. Titanium trim adds Ford Sync 2 infotainment and touchscreen, LED daytime running lights, chrome door line finisher, auto lights and wipers, auto high beam, ambient lighting, lane keeping aid, and traffic sign recognition incorporating an Intelligent Speed Limiter.

On the road, the S-MAX really does impress and even on a tight country road, the car feels good with direct, accurate steering that communicates the grip from the front wheels so well.

Minimal body roll And remarkably for such a large car, body roll is not too alarming either and it feels quite taut and composed on the tight stuff, yet comfortable enough for the rough and tumble of Irish roads. The test car was the 2.0-litre diesel with 180PS and it did a really good job of lugging the considerable weight of the S-MAX around. You can hear a bit of a diesel growl under acceleration but it never gets too noisy in the cabin and in this guise it’s quite economical too returning up to 56mpg.

The new Ford S-MAX hasn’t undergone any drastic changes but then it probably didn’t really A useful option is the handsfree-tailgate, that need them, being a tried and tested Irish family allows the boot to be opened or closed using a MPV for many years now. kicking motion beneath the rear bumper. Power for the range comes from a 2.0-litre diesel But the enhancements in the styling, the cabin, with 120PS, 150PS, 180PS or 210PS, and a 1.5- and the update of tech and equipment will ensure litre EcoBoost petrol engine (160PS).
