Retail expert calls for joined up approach to boost town centre
Golden Wedding Anniversary!
Strabane’s civic, political and business leaders are being called on to come up with a more joined up approach to boost the town’s ailing economy.
By Kevin McAnena Retail expert Glyn Roberts was speaking after a recent visit to the town to see what can be done to breathe new life back into the town centre. The chief executive of Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) met with local traders and councillors on his trip. Fears have consistently been raised about developments outside of the town centre and its knock on effect on other businesses. Glyn said more emphasis needs to be put on bring business back towards the centre: “I think the important thing is that Strabane, while facing a lot of challenges, actually does have a lot of opportunities,” he said. He continued: “I suggested a number of policy initiatives they could look at when I met with councillors and traders, and one of the things that was very clear in the Mary Portas report was the need for a ‘Town Team’ to set up and start addressing some of the problems that are in the town centre. I think what we need to see are more retailers being able to set up in Strabane town centre, and we need to be ensuring that we develop a strong night time economy as well as a strong café culture to complement the retail offerings.” The trip came on the back of a PricewaterhouseCoopers and Local Data Company report, which shows that Chain stores are closing 14 town centre shops a day. During his visit Glyn held a lengthy meeting with Council Chairman Brian McMahon, where he outlined his vision and ideas. He said: “It’s going to take a stronger joined up approach between council,
Retail expert Glyn Roberts
between government departments and traders. So we’ve said that we’re very keen to help regeneration efforts and I had a good meeting with the council chairman and I’m very keen to follow up on the ideas that I discussed with him.” Mr Roberts also said the importance of infrastructure shouldn’t be underestimated: ”What we need to do is think – How can we reinvent Strabane, how can we make it attractive, not just for more retailers but how can we attract more foreign direct investment. I think this is a challenge for the North West generally – how we can get more foreign direct investment, how we can get principally better infrastructure there. While I think it’s good that we’re getting the Derry to Strabane road (upgraded), I think the Omagh to Strabane road is also crucially important. So we need to get infrastructure right, we need to get the corporation tax reduction which will make it much easier to get high level sustainable jobs into Strabane.” He added: “There are challenges there but I think the opportunities outweigh the challenges, and I think with a little bit of a joined up approach and the political will I think we can address the issues facing Stra- Danny & Isobel Duffy from Clady who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 14th Feburary with family and friends in Jacksons Hotel Ballybofey. Strabane Cage Soccer Project at Stormont. Five other councils have received funding due to the success of Cage Soccer.
Strabane Community Safety Partnership has been given an opportunity to showcase their Cage Soccer project at Stormont. The Cage Soccer project was brought to Stormont as part of the launch of Criminal Assets Funding for Northern Ireland. Almost £800,000 of assets seized from criminals in Northern Ireland is to be allocated to community projects to help fight crime. One project singled out by Mr Ford is a cage soccer programme - a mobile arena that can be transported and deployed where wanted - developed by
Strabane Community Safety Partnership (CSP). As a result of the success of Cage Soccer in Strabane, 5 other Councils have received funding through the Criminal Assets funding that was made available. The model of good practise is also set to be developed in a number of other Councils. At parliament buildings young people from the post primary schools in Strabane District played a mini tournament to showcase the project.

LINTON & ROBINSON IN RUNNING FOR TOP AWARD
Linton & Robinson, Strabane has been shortlisted for the ‘Best Community Project’ award, sponsored by brites at the forthcoming Action Renewables Association Awards. Ran in association with Tughans and Travelwise NI, these prestigious awards recognise excellence and reward innovation by organisations in Northern Ireland who are leading the way with renewable energy technologies and sustainability and awareness raising initiatives. Led by Michael Doran, Director of Action Renewables the finalists were selected by a team of judges including Norman Aspley, CEO of Northern Ireland Science Park, Dr Geraint Ellis and Dr Stephen McKay both Senior Lecturers at the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering in Queens University, Belfast and John Manley, Business Correspondent with the Irish News. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Michael Doran commented; “We were delighted at the number of entries received as part of this year’s awards. The standard was exceptionally high this year and gave our team of judges a very tough job to do in determining the shortlists. This is the fourth year of our awards and it is most encouraging to see that the number of companies entering is rising year on year, which is primarily due to their growing level of commitment to the development of the renewable energy industry in Northern Ireland. We commend all of our shortlists and wish them all the best on the day of the awards.” The Action Renewables Association Awards are taking place in the new Titanic Belfast attraction on Tuesday 20th March, 2012, as one of a series of familiarisation events taking place ahead of the official opening on 31st March, 2012. This has been agreed due to the environmental and sustain-
able nature of the awards which compliments the ethos of the new building. Guests will be given a personalised guided tour of the building’s green credentials, as well as the opportunity to meet and speak to the designer of the building Angus Waddington of Todd Architects and enjoy a four course lunch. Nine prestigious awards will be given out on the night including: Best Energy Saving SME (sponsored by ESB IE Electric Ireland); Most Innovative Construction Project (sponsored by Action Renewables); Most Innovative Renewables Installation (sponsored by Dimplex Renewables); Most Sustainable Travel Plan implemented by SME (sponsored by Travelwise NI); Renewable Energy Awareness Award (Best School) (sponsored by RES); Best Training Provider (sponsored by SummitSkills); Best Community Project (sponsored by brites); Best Planner: Renewable Energy Project (sponsored by Action Renewables), and Tughans will be presenting the Action Renewables Award for Outstanding Work in the Renewable Energy Sector in Northern Ireland. The High Kings to open local festival
EXCLUSIVE Popular folk group The High Kings have been confirmed as the opening act for this year’s Rockin’ by the River festival in Plumbridge. By Kevin McAnena The band will perform at the ever-growing community festival on Sunday 15th July, with tickets expected to go on sale this month. The band have enjoyed phenomenal success since forming in 2008, with a huge US tour already under their belts and three dates in London’s O2 Arena coming up next week. They’ve also performed for US President Barack Obama when he visited Ireland last year, and picked up the award for Top Group at the Irish Music Awards 2011. A spokesperson for Rockin’ by the River said their name on the bill is a great coup: “We’re delighted
to have The High Kings opening this summer’s festival – they’re extremely popular and it’s great to be able to bring a band like this to the North West. It shows we’ve raised the bar again in the quality of our festival and we’re looking forward to providing a great week’s entertainment, kicked off with Ireland’s favourite folk group,” he said. The Fureys – the band’s pedigree is unquestionable. The band members all display their versatility and skills as multi-instrumentalists, playing 13 instruments between them bringing a rousing acoustic flavour to brand new songs as well as some old favourites. The High Kings also enjoy an excellent reputation as a formidable live act, and tickets for this one are expected to sell fast – we’ll have more details in next month’s issue as to where tickets are available from.

Northwest gearing up for new fishing season!
The beginning of the new fishing season is upon us and anglers have been eagerly anticipating its arrival. Fishermen all around the North West are gearing up to get the New Year started. The Finn and Foyle are now open for fishing, however with the European Habitat Directive is still in place and catch and release is still in operation, Anglers are asked to return all Salmon to the water safely. A good rule of thumb used elsewhere where catch and release is in place is to try and keep the fish in the water while unhooking and wet your hands before you handle the fish. Think too about the length of time that the fish is out of the water, try and adopt a 30 sec rule. Never keep the fish out of water for any longer. A fish deprived of water for more than a minute can be irreversibly damaged even if it looks alright after being revived. When fishing, where catch and release is in operation, use a single barbless hook for easy de hooking, also it is advisable to carry a pair of pliers to help remove the hook. Always support the fish with both hands and never hold and hang the fish by the tail as this can damage ligaments along the spine of the fish. The members of Strabane / Lifford Anglers Association had their AGM on Wednesday 22nd February in Barrack Street Primary School. The committee would like to thank all those members who attended. There was an excellent turn out for the meeting. Tickets will be available from The Bridge Guns and Tackle, Bridge Street, Strabane. The members of Sion Mills Angling Club had there 2nd EGM on Sunday 26th February in Sion Mills Primary School, where full details of the agreement were be put to the members. The members of the club unanimously supported the new

Cilento Gifts....
for Mother’s Day, birthdays, special occasions... or ‘just because’
A
lthough some gifts are just for the fun of it, most are for special occasions – such as Mother’s Day - and ‘special occasions’ are what Cilento does best! The Strabane store, already a firm favourite with fashionistas all over Ireland, has always stocked a select number of gifts throughout its ladies, men’s and children’s wear departments. Having added to their range over the previous six months, Cilento customers asked for more, says
owner, Lesley Mealiff. “So we began adding to the selection of wedding, engagement, anniversary, birthday and christening gifts”. As a result, Cilento Gifts now has its own dedicated department at the Pavilion store. “There is a wide range of personal and household gifts available” says Lesley. “Gifts to be treasured or for pampering; keepsakes, photo frames and albums; candles and candelabras - we have something for everyone and every occasion from £4 upwards”. With such a diversity of gifts and

such keen prices, it is no wonder this latest addition to Cilento has been such a success. Especially among Cilento Loyalty Card holders who are now able to use their points to purchase the smaller objects among the range. “Some of our customers like to save their points over the year for big purchases such as a Christmas outfit or maybe to treat themselves to a Guess handbag. Others, visiting the shop less often, want to use up their points at the time of their visit, so this gives them more choice in spending points.

As giving our customers what they want has always been the drive behind everything we do here at the shop, this was just another natural progression for us”. So call in to Cilento and check out the new gift department for Mother’s Day - and for all those other special occasions throughout the year. For further information contact Cilento on 02871 884174 or visit us online at... www.cilentodesignerwear.com Cilento is open seven days a week, including Sundays.

Local farmer determined to win RTE reality singing show
Jim Devine the Voice of Ireland? singer songwriter he was good fun as well so it’s all good!
Local man Jim Devine has built up a wealth of experience in recent years with his participation in some high calibre Reality TV Talent shows, and this time he hopes the experience will guide him to victory in RTE’s latest offering ‘The Voice of Ireland’.
Jim if you don’t win the Voice of Ireland, who do you rate as your possible winner of the show, I’m sure you have heard most of them now throughout the Battles? Throughout the battles and the blind auditions the quality has been very high, I like Conor Quinn I think he’s got a really unusual Voice it’s something different he’s definitely very talented also Pat Byrne is right and good Liam Geddes also on my team is excellent and Nollaig o’Conner on Sharon’s team I think is the one to beat from the girls!
By Tommy Forbes Jim tried his hand and his vocal talents in firstly, the ‘All Ireland Karaoke show’ with the late Gerry Ryan on 2 FM ,finishing overall a very close runner-up, Jim has gone on to establish himself as one of the North-West’s foremost vocal performers building a great reputation with his most entertaining JIM D’s Karaoke Road-show and being a regular performer in The Fir Tree’s Hotel, Katy Daly’s nightclub and Strabane Golf club where the popular Douglas Bridge farmer who now lives in Strabane with new wife Orla has built up an impressive regional following. Jim went on to win the Tyrone Heat of the U Factor picking up the cool £2000 first prize in 2009 and then missed out narrowly in the Ulster final held in the Europa Hotel Belfast. The first major television appearance came in the ‘All Ireland Talent show’ last year where under the guidance of mentor Dana he lost out in a nail biting judge’s decision to eventual winner Daniel Furlong, the 13 yr old angel toned choral singer. Not put off by this experience, Jim travelled to Glasgow last year for the X Factor auditions succeeding in getting right through to Boot camp with 4 Yes’s from Gary, Louis & Co, unfortunately when the numbers were drastically cut Jim was left to go home without having the chance to show his talents to the wider British Public. However Jim has showed much determination to succeed in the music industry and is now riding high in RTE’S latest reality offering the very popular “The Voice of Ireland” where he has progressed to the ‘Live Finals’ at the Helix Arena after safely negotiating the “Blind Auditions” and the” Battle stages” he has found himself a prominent member of Westlifes’s Kian Egan’s team. Our reporter went for an informal question and answer interview with Jim about the upcoming televised stages and his life in general.
So how has the whole experience been for you Jim working along with the famous Kian Eagan from Westlife? I have to say of Kian Eagan at the start that I Didn’t know quite what to make of him, he being in a famous band like Westlife I was kind off taken aback at first talking to him but as I’ve got to know him he really is a genuine down to earth sort of guy just like one of your friends to be honest and also Priscilla Samuels who is the voice coach for Westlife and is working with us she is really brilliant, when she talks to you she leaves you full of confidence she knows how to bring out the best in people and leaves you full of positive energy! Jim your through to the live shows, now you will have 1 min 30 seconds to impress the public how important is it to get the right song choice?
always stood by me in everything I’ve done!
all pushing for it I think from the reaction that I’ve had the public are really surprised about the level Has this been your favorite competition to take of talent on show” part in so far? Have you made good friends with any of the Yes definitely this has been unreal a great experi- other competitors Jim? There have been a few ence but I Don’t regret entering any of the others reports hinting that a few of the acts pitted the amount of support I have received from local against each other haven’t really got on? people and further afield they have always got behind me and it has been unbelievable as has been I have made good friends with a few of the comthe amount of friends and contacts I have met from petitors and a few of the contestants who have all over the country. been put out I Got on especially well with Lorna
Jim do you think this may be your final chance for Stardom in this sort of competition? I do believe this maybe my final chance in this type of Reality Show I’m 32 now am recently married and settled with our first baby on the way”
Musical influences Jim for you, what type of music does Jim Devine listen to when he’s travelling up the motorway? I’m a fan of most types of music and I try to sing a bit of everything too, but my first love has to be Motown, Jackie Wilson, Percy Sledge to name a couple I’ve always been a fan although I like a lot of modern stuff as well, Lady Gaga, the Killers and the like!”I would say my favorite band of all time would have been Oasis and my favorite Album “What’s the story morning glory? So when at home how does Jim Devine relax and take it easy?
What about the X Factor Jim, could you see yourself ever trying to achieve success there again? I loved every minute of the X-Factor experience getting through to boot camp was great I could be tempted maybe at another time but with family now I would much rather put all my efforts into this show and give it everything I have! Do you think the experience gained from some previous disappointments can hold you in good Jim Devine with Kian Egan of Westlife. stead for the rigors of this competition? I’ve went into the All Ireland Talent show, the X-Factor and different competitions like the U Factor and stuff I Have learned to hold my nerve better and I hope I have learned a lot in general from all the other shows when it comes to the big stage and really it’s made me more determined to do well in this show, not just for myself but for Orla and my whole family and friends who have
Song choice is everything, get the song wrong and your definitely out of the competition you need a song that people know and can relate to, maybe sing along with, something that will make them want to vote for you, I have had long discussions with Kian trying to get a few that will work for me not just slow Ballads but a few up-tempo ones too to try and show some versatility, yes song choice is so important!
What about the standard of this competition Jordan although we were against each other we Jim, how would you rate it? got on great and although she went out she was most sincere in wishing me all the best, there was I would rate the standard really highly, with the another guy Stephen Griffin who unfortunately Blind auditions they just heard a voice and they also went home I made good friends with him as had to either go with it or not, there are some great well, they were all staying in the same hotel, Kyle singers through they are all great musicians in their Kennedy an American guy from Kansas I’ve made own right, its everyone’s big chance and they are good friends with and Liam Geddes from Dublin a
Well at the minute I’m a bit hyper! Orla and I are expecting our first baby very soon now so there’s a lot of planning and work to be done for that, I’m on the farm during the day that’s an important part of who and what I am, I’m from Douglas Bridge but live now in Strabane I am out singing quite a few nights in the week too, so really there’s not too much time for relaxation but that’s the way I like it! So finally Jim a message for the North West public to finish! Yes for sure I would like to thank everyone for all their great support so far it’s been fantastic. I’m the last person from Northern Ireland left in the show in fact I think in Ulster everyone else seems to be from further down the country, so please tune in to “The Voice of Ireland” I will be on next on the 11th March and please vote for me I will give it my best shot and hope to do everyone proud.

LOCAL SLIMMERS TACKLE ‘NATIONAL OBESITY CRISIS’ close friends. We help each other through our most difficult times, build our confidence together and celebrate our successes together, like good friends do. Having that support from people who are close to you, who care about how you feel and who can truly understand what you’re going through gives you the strength to put yourself in control. And when you feel in control, you have the confidence to make long lasting changes.”
Local slimmers are on a mission to help Tyrone residents to lose weight after a new survey found that 77 per cent of people think that obesity is ‘a national crisis’ and 79 per cent want to slim down themselves. The launch of Slimming World’s Let’s Beat Obesity Together in local Slimming World groups comes as the club’s National Slimming Survey reveals that our down-to-earth residents in Northern Ireland shun healthy lifestyle advice from celebrities and sports stars and instead take their lead from people in their local community, like friends, family and local health professionals. Launched at the Slimming World groups on February 13th, the Let’s Beat Obesity Together campaign will run for 12 weeks and encourage family, friends and the local community to work together to make our town a healthier place to live. With Slimming World groups across Strabane and SionMills, the club is hoping to inspire as many people as possible to join the weight loss challenge for a slimmer, healthier and happier future.
“It’s telling that so many local people see obesity as a national crisis,” says Sinead, Slimming World Consultant in the Sion Mills group. “And it’s no surprise that so many people want to lose weight. When you’re feeling down about your size it can take over every aspect of your life, from your health and happiness to your work and relationships. “I’m delighted that the local people recognise the importance of family, friends and the people around us in helping us to make healthy lifestyle changes. It’s something we know all about in my Slimming World group as, meeting every week to share our ups and downs, our motivations and our practical tips and ideas for healthy living, we’ve all become
The findings of Slimming World’s survey follow recent government proposals that will pass responsibility for managing public health issues like obesity to local services who can use their superior local knowledge to better support the community. Now, with the average person wanting to lose 2st 7lbs, Sinead is hoping to show the local community how, with a powerful package of group support, a healthy low fat eating plan and guided activity programme, it’s possible to lose weight without giving up the food you love. “Losing weight doesn’t have to be a joyless experience,” says Sinead. “You don’t have to go hungry and you don’t have to deprive yourself of your favourite

The Rainbow Rehoming Centre: Finding A Home for The Perfect Pet FIRST established almost 16 years ago, The Rainbow Rehoming Centre for stray cats and dogs has found their popularity reaching new heights recently. By Megan Conroy Founded by Derry woman, Helen Davis, the home based in Eglinton gives shelter to almost 1000 abandoned animals a year. The Rainbow Centre is run by 14 experienced volunteers who take time out of their busy lives to ensure that the animals are cared for to the highest standards.
The non-profit organisation is funded entirely by donations from the public and through extensive fund-raising. Mrs Davis said: “We do not receive any funding from the government and have been turned down by the Derry City Council on numerous occasions. We rely on donations and by organising sponsored dog walks and bag packing events. We have around 20 dogs and 30 cats each time in the centre and have found that the centre is in high demand at the minute. Many of the animals we rehome have been treated cruelly by their previous owners and have been neglected.” Helen first began caring for mistreated animals in 1997 when she ran an adopted pet scheme. “During
Sporting Grants set to Rejuvenate Local Facilities Strabane District Council has announced details of a £250,000 capital investment programme which has been awarded to local sporting organisations. By Megan Conroy
Grants ranging from £15,757 to £50,000 have been awarded to groups who applied and met the eligibility criteria. Sports including Cricket, Gaelic Football and Golf were among those to benefit from the scheme. Council Chairman Brian Mc Mahon said: “Strabane District Council is delighted to award and allocate £250,000 to improve sporting facilities for local people. This important funding programme will improve the accessibility and quality of sporting facilities and the standards of sporting performance across the District.

We are delighted that projects which are socially inclusive, and which focus on facilities for young people, people with disabilities and women in sport are among those supported”. Recipients of this Capital Development funding scheme include: Tyrone Gaelic Athletic Association; Newtownstewart Golf Club; St Eugene’s GFC, Castlederg; Strabane Cricket Club and Clann NaGael GFC. Cllr Mc Mahon added: “It is hoped that the scheme can be continued next year to extend this excellent approach to sports development and further progress the quality of sport and recreational facilities within the Strabane District”
the time that I ran the scheme I was approached by Stuart Keys, who had recently set up the North West Animal Welfare Group and he told me that they would give me some financial support. Myself and my sister then found a site to build a centre. With the help of family and friends we physically built the compound ourselves. We had to move location after two years but have been in our current site for 14 years now.” Unfortunately due to lack of funding the centre can no longer rehome unwanted pets but still ensure that stray animals homed in the council pound are featured on their facebook site. Helen added: “One of our volunteers visits the pound once a week and
takes pictures of the animals, we put them on our website and hope that people will find a home for them. Facebook has been great for us, we have people coming from Scotland, England and all across the North-West coming to see the animals we home.” Before an animal is given to it’s new owner the team at the centre visit their new homes and ensure that it is a suitable environment for a pet. Helen said: “ We want to ensure that all the animals are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve, some of these animals are very vulnerable, we have to take care of them.”

This year Mother’s Day falls on the March 18, the day when sore heads will be rising across the country with St.Patrick’s day celebrations taking place the day before. Mums everywhere will be glad to know that they can look forward to day of pampering and constant compliments while resting their tired limbs. Pessimists may argue that Mother’s Day is an American; commercialised and outdated holiday that is intended to ensure Hallmark does not go into administration. That is not the case however as in Ireland the date holds more significance. Retailers ensure that their stores are filled with luxurious gifts designed for any shopper, whether its chocolates, cards or champagne the date can not be avoided but showing your affection for a lady who has wiped your tears and mended many of broken
hearts does not have to come at an expense. Mother of one, Nichola McNamee said: “My daughter usually gets me a card and a gift but I would be happy with a cup of tea in bed, some people can not afford to splash out but I believe many mums would agree it’s the thought that counts. On-line designers find themselves in high demand this time of year as customers are now opting to purchase personalised, unique gifts some that would be least expected to be highly sought after. It is now possible to have a rose named after your mum. As the traditions of the day itself change, for one girl Mother’s Day means more than buying a gift. Caoimhe Forbes said: My mum is my inspiration, my role model and my best friend. Just by being herself she makes my life all the better. To the world she may be one person but to me she means the world, I make she knows that all year round. Forgetting that Mother’s Day is just around the corner is fairly impossible but finding a way to show your appreciation is easy. Let your mum have a lay-on, make her breakfast and let her relax for the day, show her that her efforts do not go unnoticed.

TRIATHLETE TO REPRESENT IRELAND IN ISRAEL THIS SPRING
Sion Mills man set for European Championships A local man has been selected to compete for Ireland in the ETU European Triathlon Championships in Israel, on April 21. Michael Brogan, originally from Sion Mills and now based in London, will be competing in the Sprint Triathlon distance as an ‘age-group’ athlete. The Age Group system allows for the opportunity to compete against other triathletes of the same age (within a five year band) and gender. A triathlete’s age group category reflects their age on the December 31 of the competition year, so Michael’s category for this year is 40-44. Speaking to the ‘Herald, Michael explained that after learning that he was selected to compete in the Sprint Triathlon he was both excited and nervous. “This has been a goal of mine for at least the last two years and I wasn’t sure how to feel when I got the email from Amanda Mannix, at Triathlon Ireland. Obviously I was over the moon to have been selected and also relieved to be given the opportunity to realise a long held goal. These feelings were replaced almost immediately by nervousness about getting to the start line healthy and in good shape and also apprehension about the training schedule that was needed.” He continued, “Being away from home,
I wanted to pick up the phone immediately to call my family. My parents have been very encouraging over the last two years knowing that I was training with an eye on Age Group selection. I think they were both quite ‘moved’ by the news, as were my sisters, Gemma and Rosaria. I’ve also been getting calls and texts from my brothers Paul and Vincent, who are also away from home,
working in Norway.” Michael is now in the middle of his preparation for the competition. “The distances for the Sprint Triathlon are 750m swim, 20K bike and 5K run,” he explained. “Ideally a training week would consist of three swims, three bike sessions and three runs but sometimes the sessions have to overlap, such as a bike and run combination being called
Pure & Simple
a ‘brick’ session, where you cycle on a turbo trainer for a set time and then run for a set time and then you get back on the bike! A typical week for me would be: 50K plus bike ride followed by 20 minute run off the bike on a Sunday, rest on a Monday, track session, run short reps working on speed on a Tuesday, a 45 minute bike turbo, working on strength and a one hour swim, working on speed on a Wednesday, a one hour group run at threshold pace on a Thursday, a 45 minute bike turbo, working on cadence and a 45 swim session with my swim coach, Sue McRowan on a Friday, a one hour swim working on endurance and a run session working on strength/ endurance on a Saturday. For Eilat, I will try to build in 2 gym sessions as well, working on core and flexibility.” Michael started running when he was 14. His brother Jude was born with Cystic Fibrosis and his family got involved with the fundraising campaign for the Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust. Michael offered to run the Belfast marathon for the Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust and from there his love for athletics flourished. “I still remember that first night my mother and I went out for a five minute run, ‘to see what it was like’! I’ve been a runner pretty much ever since,” he told us. “I joined a running club about six years ago in Trent Park, north London. This club has given me the opportunity to train consistently with some very strong athletes and I feel I have ben-
Open 9-4pm Daily
efited greatly from the club structure. Through the club I have also become a qualified Leader in Running Fitness and regularly lead a group in training. The club has a strong triathlete section which I became involved with about three years ago. I started off by replacing a long Sunday run with a group bike ride, just for a change in training, and, before you know it, you’re talking about gear ratios and hypoxic breathing swim sessions! Before too long you’re researching wet suits and asking cycle shop assistants, “Does this come in carbon?” laughed Michael. Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland. In Ulster we have an Olympic hopeful in Derry woman Aileen Morrison, who is currently ranked 11th in the world. She was the first Irish athlete to take a podium place in an ITU event in the World Championship Series in Hamburg, 2010. We also have Armagh man, Conor Murphy, who competed as an agegroup athlete in 2010, where he won the European and World Championships and has since gone on to become an elite athlete. Such people have been a major inspiration for Michael. “Following the progression of the sport in Ireland and reading about Irish athletes like Aileen and Conor has definitely inspired me in my training. Selection as an age-group athlete has been a goal of mine for the last couple of years and I’m over the moon to have been given the opportunity to compete for my country,” concluded Michael. THE BEAUTY SCENE By Megan Conroy
Stepping into spring with Sixties Fashion As winter finally draws to a close, so does the need for all things dark and gloomy, with High Street spring fashion promising to inject a little colour back into your wardrobe. Last month saw the opening of Fashion Week in New York and London, with celebrities yet again failing to disappoint wearing the latest ensembles from the weird and wonderful designers across the globe. The average woman tends to see Fashion Week as a time to check out the newest creations from designers such as Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs as the perfect opportunity to have a good old giggle at the wacky and downright outrageous clothing they place on their poor suffering models, woman reading this would tend to agree and if that is the case then applaud for the price these items cost, you could take out a mortgage on a ten bedroom mansion. Although Fashion Week is not the ideal location for the typical working woman it is the place however where High Street designers get their inspiration, giving us the realistic shopper a chance to look like Kate Moss without breaking the bank. This year’s spring collection varies from flirty fifties to the swinging sixties, with a modern twist, so those of a slighter older generation can be sure to find a need for that ‘vintage dress’ that is stuck in the back of your wardrobe. Bold colours are a must this year, sunshine
yellows; royal blues and neon pink are dominant among the collections in stores like Topshop, River Island, Zara and Miss Selfridge. Whether it’s floral patterned jeans or printed tees, the bolder the better comes to mind when checking out these looks. Lace is within the midst as one of the essential materials required when designers aim to portray elegance in their masterpieces. A favourite with Louis Vuitton this year, lace is everywhere on the High Street this spring with stores like Primark mimicking the designs. Adding some sparkled jewels to a lace dress gives a more vintage feel. The sixties fashion has been revived so many times that many of last year’s items are in-trend again this season, this hippy look may not suit everybody but it fills the rails of River Island and can not be avoided. To make a statement without over-doing the flower power trend, add a plain tee and some simple accessories to a maxi skirt. When shopping for clothes most of the female race wants to experience that instant, ‘WOW’ feeling and urge to buy. As this is not often achievable, you end up feeling exhausted leaving the shops in a foul mood. This can be avoided with the introduction of a pretty pastel dress to your life. Flattering to most colouring, the plain lemons, soft pinks and mint greens will give that extra girly look to your style, Topshop has an excellent range. Spring is a time of year when the long dark nights are fading, the weather tends to pick up (sometimes, we are in Ireland) and woman everywhere are urged to swap the

knee-high boots and woolly jumpers for skirts and wedges. This can be a very stressful time, especially when u discover you’ve ‘no clothes at all’ and you just ‘have to go shopping’, there is no need to despair these styles are affordable yet look as if they came straight from Milan.

HD Eyebrows - The Latest Beauty Trend to Hit the Beauty Scene Perfecting flawless eyebrows can sometimes be a tricky situation. From over-plucking to disastrous waxing attempts, eyebrows are often a neglected area of a woman’s beauty regime. The latest beauty treatment available in local beauty salon, Classic Beauty, attempts to ease the strain of a monthly wax and offer longer lasting defined eyebrows. A favourite with celebs such as Kim Kardasian, the treatment focuses on creating a long-term design rather than hair instant removal and brow tidying. The seven-step procedure including threading, tweezing, plucking and tinting intends to leave clients with more strong and defined brows. Eyebrows are certainly on the top of the list when it comes to growing beauty trends, with the introduction of the ‘Scouse Brow’ taking the world by storm. When the star of reality show Desperate Scousewives, Jodie attempted to impress her boss of a beauty salon with the heavily made up eyebrow, viewers where sure it would be a short-lived phenomenon. To the surprise of beauty editors the ‘Scouse eyebrow’ became a must for other celebs such as TOWIE stars Frankie and Lauren, even the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton was seen supporting the look on her wedding day. HD eyebrows aim to life the face and define cheekbones with the result lasting up to six weeks. For woman who would prefer a more subtle look, the procedure can be adjusted with a lighter tint. Local student, Ciara Byrne who has tried the treatment recently said: “I loved the result, I would have to have my eyebrows waxed and tinted every three weeks but now I won’t have to. I think everybody should try it, it is definitely less painful.” The treatment is available in Classic Beauty with prices ranging from £20.

Strabane Student taking the Modelling World by Storm Local girl, Sophie Coyle will today be taking to the stage, with the hope of winning the final of Ireland’s Top Model competition. By Megan Conroy Sophie, an A-level student at the Sacred Heart College in Omagh has been battling her way through the elimination process with girls across the country hoping to secure a place in the final. Sophie first took an interest in modelling when she was just 14 years old, “It was a few years ago, I was approached to do an advertising campaign for Omagh District Council to promote the Omagh Leisure Centre, it all took off from there.” With a gruelling study schedule and a busy social life, Sophie does her best to stay focused, “It can be difficult at times to balance the two, I do however try to structure my week as best I can to ensure I get all my school work done before I concentrate on the competition.” In December 143 hopefuls embarked on the journey to become Ireland’s next model, with only 15 girls remaining the competition is intensifying, “Last week was the first time I felt the pressure, as there were 20 eliminations and you just can’t be sure who is safe to stay. The girls are all really nice to one another and offer friendly advice and tips.” Although the modelling industry has come under scrutiny in the past for using underweight models on the catwalk, Sophie has a healthy figure and has remained level-headed, “ My favourite high street shop is River Island, modelling does come with its perks I have been given lots of free make-up, jewellery, hair products and vouchers.” “My confidence had definitely grown as I am more at ease when I am getting photographed, on the catwalk and especially doing public interviews -
Although becoming an successful model is now top of the agenda for Sophie, she has not ruled out other options for her future, “I would like to be an art teacher or maybe a jewellery designer, in ten years time I hope to have achieved all my ambitions, travelled the world, have a job that is worthwhile and most important of all to live a happy life with the people I love.” With plenty of people supporting Sophie in her life, what has been the best piece of advice she has been given? “I have always been given advice from the people who care about and love me and I think the best piece of advice I was given is “never a failure always a lesson” especially at this stage in the modelling competition”

The Sounds of Summer! As the evenings begin to stretch, many of us will now start to weigh up our live entertainment options this summer. As ever there is plenty to pick from come June through to September. However, the one big omission this year is July’s Oxegen festival. The festival, which usually takes place at Punchestown Racecourse in Naas, has been running since 2004. Promoters MCD have reassured unhappy campers that Oxegen will, however, be back in 2013. A series of outdoor concerts in Phoenix Park appear to be the alternative for the Oxegen audience this summer. The newly reformed Stone Roses play the Park on July 5, with all 45,000 tickets unsurprisingly already soldout. It will be the Roses’ first Irish appearance since they played Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork in 1995 as headliners of the Féile Festival. It also marks the first Irish appearance of the original line-up since June,
O2 Arena. Meanwhile Florence and The Machine’s second album ‘Ceremonials’ hit the top of the UK charts and the Billboard Top 10 in its first week. Australian indie rockers The Temper Trap are also on the bill. As Paulie said to Rocky, “hit the one in the middle!”
Meanwhile making it a weak headline vocalist hat-trick are Red Hot Chilli Peppers, who will play Croke Park on June 26. Support on the day comes from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, whose set, if Noel’s recent Belfast and Dublin shows are anything to go by, will be a healthy mix of new solo material and a sprinkling of Oasis anthems. Belfast’s Belsonic festival will take place from August 15 through to August 26. Following last year’s line-up, which included the likes of Paul Weller, The Specials, Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and Paolo Nutini, this year’s lineup, for the most part, is a disappointment. The line-up includes Welsh crooner Tom Jones, popdubstep producer Skrillex, ska-pop nutty boys Madness, power pop Irish act Two Door Cinema Club, James Morrison and the man with the keys to the top 40 chart, David Guetta. While all of the line-up have their fair share of fans, it just seems a little damp for a city that has just hosted the MTV EMAs.
weeks to come. Derry will host its own outdoor concert this summer as well. Massive Attack will play at Ebrington Parade Grounds on Thursday, June 21 2012 as part of the Peace One Day concert. Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band return to our shores in July as well for two outdoor shows at Dublin’s RDS on July 17 and 18. The last time the Boss and the band played in Ireland was in the same venue, on July 12, 2009 and it was a three hour and 20 minute curfew breaking extravaganza. There will be a missing piece to that jigsaw this time around in the giant shape saxophonist Clarence ‘Big Man’ Clemons, who sadly passed away last summer. While the ‘Big Man’ will of course be missed, the Boss, Stevie, Max, Roy, Garry and Nils still have it in them to make the live shows pants-dropping, houserocking, earth-quaking and bootyshaking! Not to be missed.
Madonna, the ‘Material Girl’ herself, returns to Ireland in the summer for the first time since her rain soaked show at Slane Castle in 2004. This time she will be taking over the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on July 24. While Elton John and his husband may have issues with the amount of live singing Ms Ciccone does, it won’t trouble her massive devotional following and there’s no doubting the fantastic visual spectacle her show will be.

Summer in Tallaght I would never claim to be a fan of Aslan; knowing no more than two songs by a band removes me from an opinion, be it positive or negative. However, it would be churlish not to tip one’s hat in admiration towards the Dublin band as they prepare for their largest gig to date, in front of 20,000 people in Tallaght stadium, home of Shamrock Rovers FC.
The outdoor gig, which takes place on Saturday, June 30, will mark 30 years together for a band who have had their fair share of highs and lows. That they are still together to this day and ploughing their own path reflects a passion for what they do. Careerist musicians often call time on their current project as soon as it becomes clear that large scale success is not beckoning. The high hopes held for Aslan on a global scale dissolved many years ago for one reason or another, but that has never diminished the connection they have shared with their loyal Irish following, as they

continue, three decades on, to jump into the van and travel up and down the country. You don’t do that unless you have a genuine love for what you do! Front man, Christy Dignam has faced many struggles in his life, and for him June 30 at Tallaght stadium will surely be a small personal victory that few would deny him. Speaking of the announcement of the concert, he said: “We can’t believe that we are thirty years together this year and to be playing Tallaght Stadium in front of 20,000 people is a dream for us. We have a lot of very special guests lined
If you are to check out one new artist this month online make it SOAK. going head to head with the much younger Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Pink and, of course, Lady Gaga, who has already taken some liberties with Madonna’s back catalogue of sounds and styles it must be said. However, even a simple six song set of ‘Into the Groove’, ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, ‘Live to Tell’, ‘Like A Prayer’, ‘Ray of Light’ and ‘Vogue’ has more colour, shape and variety to it than anything these young rivals have produced, all of which conservatively sticks too rigidly to formula with no daring inclination to reshape it. The re-make, re-model mantra that she took from Bowie et al has always been Madonna’s strength, and the reason why she’s in a position to go head-to-head with ladies half her age. At the time of writing, nothing has been confirmed for Slane Castle this year, although there are rumours of a Coldplay concert, with the band themselves very keen to make it happen. Electric Picnic will return for its ninth year, and be held from Friday August 31 to Sunday September 2 at Stradbally Hall Estate, County Laois. No acts have been confirmed yet but there are rumours of The Cure as potential headliners for one of the nights, which would be very nice given that they haven’t played Ireland since 2004. Hopefully we’ll have more information on the Picnic line-up next month along with the Glasgowbury festival in Draperstown. Until then, it’s time to start saving; these concert tickets are never cheap! up for the day and we would just like to say a big ‘thanks’ to everyone who has supported the band over the years and helped us reach this milestone. We are really excited that younger fans will get the chance to see us live in a big stadium and we are honoured that Aslan will be the very first music concert at Tallaght Stadium.” It is set to be a special day for both the band and their fans. Tickets for ‘Aslan: Celebrating 30 Years’ are priced at €49.65 standing/€54.65 seated including booking fee. Gates open at 1pm.
While it would be easy to assume when listening to this lady that she is perhaps some US alternative artist on the Matador Records roster, she is in fact a 15 year old school girl from Derry! Think early Cat Power or better still, think no-one and simply put ‘SOAK’ into the Facebook search engine. Original recordings such as ‘Numb’, ‘Home’, ‘Trains’ and ‘Leaves’ show a songwriting and vocal maturity beyond her 15 years. With an EP recorded and set for release we look forward to hearing more from this intriguing young lady. You can find her music on Soundcloud by simply logging on to http://soundcloud.com/gardenknome.

HC - ‘The Life Album’
As one of the pioneers of Strabane HipHop, HC has seen it grow steadily over the years into the major live draw it has now become, while remaining one of the main figures at the helm. His latest album, ‘The Life Album’, reflects how much he has evolved since his beginnings as a Hip-Hop artist. Immediately the listener is drawn in with the cruisin’ along grooves to ‘Life S**t’ and ’16 Again’, which tap into the similar cookout, feel-good summer vibe of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Meanwhile, ‘Blitzkreeg’ featuring D.K. and Gerardi2 bites nasty and honestly and sits in sharp contrast to the mellow and reflective ‘Shine’, with its themes of longing and regret. ‘Broken Every Door’, with its David Sylvian on speed sample of ‘Ghosts’, brings the age old theme of social isolation up to the present day to powerful effect. HC and his peers are documenting through music their lives and the life that surrounds them and it’s a fascinating genre to observe. ‘The Life Album’ is packed with a home-made creative energy that isn’t taught at school, but instead simply hangs in the air around the town waiting for someone to catch it. HC has reeled it in on this col-

Newtown Drama Festival reaches climax
To Advertise 71 886759(NI) or 048 71 886759 (From ROI)
Newtownstewart has donned its literary cap once more as the town’s annual drama festival reaches its conclusion. By Kevin McAnena The productions continue tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow, with the winner of the 19th festival set to be announced on Saturday night after the final performance. This year’s stellar line up has already seen plays by groups such as the Ballychannon Drama Society and the Yellow Moon Theatre Company. Festival Director Paul Browne says the bar has been raised in terms of quality: “It’s been going great, the standard of plays has been top notch. Our line up is first class – we have eight nights and six of the groups have won All Irelands and the other two have been very close, so quality wise it’s probably the best festival we’ve ever had,” he said. The festival has become a firm fixture on the local entertainment calendar, and Paul said the week long event, which began last Friday (14th February) also brings a buzz to the town: “The shops do well out of it too, and we have Grange Court self catering apartments which has been full since last Friday with groups coming from all round the country. So it brings some money to the town but it also brings a bit of craic – at the end of the day it is a festival, and everyone can come and watch the play and meet up with the people in the play afterwards and
have a chat with them, it’s very open. They all love coming to Newtownstewart as well, which helps.” Paul also took the opportunity to issue an appeal to the public to show more support for the festival, with attendances showing a drop from last year. So far it’s been the only down side to a great week, and he says people are missing out: “On Friday night we have a Northern Ireland premiere of a play called Jerusalem, by probably one of the best groups in Ireland,” he said. He added: “It has never been seen here before - it’s on in the West End at the minute. If it’s not seen here, then you probably won’t see it because the rights have been withdrawn and I think it’s a great opportunity for people in
the area to come and see something which is brand new and is award winning already. Thursday night’s and Saturday night’s plays are very good as well by two groups that have won All Irelands as well. There’s something for everyone, the three nights are very different. It makes for a better night than sitting in front of the TV.” Two winners will be announced by the adjudicators on Saturday night, with each winner picking up 12 points which they will hope to add to at other festivals to leave them in with a shout of winning the Ulster and All Ireland titles. Tickets for the shows are £7 a night, and to find out the full schedule log on to www.newtownstewartdramafestival.com

Strabane Athletic Football Club Notes Welcome to our monthly round-up of everything to do with your local soccer club Strabane Athletic FC.
SAFC Player Profile
1st Team Sponsored by Toot Takes All Bookmakers (Rodney Porter), the first team have been competing in the Fermanagh and Western Division 2 this season. After winning division 3 last season the current team are looking towards successive promotions and competing in the top division. Currently top of the league on goal difference from Killen Rangers and with a game in hand they are looking at not only gaining promotion but also winning the league title. With a strong squad to choose from and having a top quality training facility to avail off (Holy Cross College 3G pitch) manager Martin Doherty expects his team to be competitive on every match day and with only a handful of fixtures remaining the teams primary goal is finger tips away. After defeating last year’s Irish Junior Cup winners (Woodvale FC) in the 3rd round the team unfortunately went out in the next round to current semi-finalists St Mary’s of Portadown. The club wish them all the best in their pursuit in winning this year’s competition. On that particular match day the club raised £220.00 at the gate from fans donations which was in return donated to the Joe McGarrigle Stay’in Alive Fund.
SAFC under 16’s have been accepted into the F&W Brendan Keogh Youth League which commences this month.
With a very young squad they have had mix fortunes to date. Alongside some very convincing results they have witness a few below average performances. However, the team are still well situated to push for the second automatic promotion place behind run-away leaders Gransha Institute.

SAFC Golf Day Top Goal Scorer: Gary Henderson
They are in the next round of the Blue Ribbon Cup after defeating Championship side Tamnaherin Celtic in extra time and with a steady squad on a weekly basis they aim to put a run together that will hopefully put them in the mix for honours at the end of the season.

Further details on how to sign up will be on the clubs website (www.strabaneafc.com) and Facebook page (Strabane Afc) in due course. Train your mind to relax! Welcome back... In last month’s column I gave you some tips as to how to train the mind to go into a solid mental pre-shot routine, Trigger - on. I hope you have had time to put this into action, as it will keep the mind in the present state and keep you from thinking about your swing, score. Today let’s look at another key mental game tool, used by the world’s best tour players. Trigger off, is also key as it allows the mind to relax, stay patient and remain in the present state in-between shots. In you consider how long does it take to hit a shot or sink a putt? This is a matter of seconds, if you spread that over a total round of golf it means you only actually play golf for around one hour, so what are you thinking for the other 3 hours. You have so much time to think in a round of golf, but what is the level or quality of your thinking, is it giving you an advantage or are you getting in your way. So often players will walk between shots thinking of their score, the shot they has just played, the front nine, the back nine, how other people are playing - all this is doing is taking them out of the present. I coach players to find ways of distracting their minds on the shot they have just played, accepting it’s over and get the mind ready for next shot. The key is to stay in a natural state, when
Some of the World’s best tour players use the ‘trigger off’ technique. Rory McIlroy (pictured).
you have played your best golf, that’s what happened, you just stayed the same and let the score happen, did not react to good or bad shots. Tips to trigger off • Work hard on breathing in between shots • Have light conversation • Have something to eat or drink • Try not to react to a shot you are not pleased with • Work on positive body language until you get about 20 yards from the ball - then • Trigger back on, by going into the pre -shot routine again. See you next month!
