Are your specs uncomfortable?
SINGLE VISION LENSES WITH DESIGNER FRAMES*
If your specs are uncomfortable, they need not be. Titanium frames are strong, hypoallergenic and very light. They come in a range of colours and styles to suit everyone. “It’s surprising at how light our titanium frames are and for men we have a flexon titanium range which are especially good as they can be twisted and bounce back into shape. People are always amazed when we demonstrate the product” explains Wendy Hamilton, Manager at D Mc Govern Opticians and contact lens centre. In our Silhouette rimless collection you will find the lightest range of frames in the world. These are ultra stylish frames and are very
often worn by actresses, actors and models such as Jane Fonda, Helena Christensen and in Ireland the new president Michael D Higgins. Lenses can also be made thinner and lighter with our range of thinned down lenses. “Thick lenses are a thing of the past” says Donal Mc Govern, Optometrist, “With thinned down lenses, the lenses look great and are much lighter.” Lighter specs need not be expensive especially with the free single vision lens offer at D Mc Govern Opticians and contact lens centre for the month of July. Please call to the practice at 20 Castle Street, Strabane, where the staff will be pleased to show you the large selection of frames available and discuss lens options or contact Wendy on 028 71882506.

This year, some great nominations have resulted in a tough task for judges deciding on the winners in each of the four categories. The event, supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition is now in its fifth year and was initiated to help veterinary nurses receive wider recognition of their work. The quality of the nominations reflects growing appreciation of the tremendous efforts nurses put into caring for their patients and animals in the wider community. The winners will receive gift vouchers and trophies to recognise their fantastic contributions to the veterinary nursing profession
Shauna Whelan, NI Student Veterinary Nurse of the Year Knowing your pet is in safe hands means a lot to a pet owner, so Shauna’s efforts to show that she cares are greatly appreciated by clients. As one couple put it, “We have witnessed her talk openly and lovingly to the animals in her care in front of owners and then still continue when the owner leaves the premises.” As

Our man in Poland for Euro 2012 recalls a tournament where Ireland were found to be out of their depth against three of the world’s top sides, but still captured the hearts of Europeans through their singing, dancing and readiness to enjoy the experience, no matter what. Kevin McAnena writes… When people talk of the joy of shared experience, of camaraderie, reverie and solidarity with one’s fellow man, they must surely be picturing the craic there is following the Ireland soccer team to a major tournament. I’m a lover of the game of soccer, but bear no huge affinity with any team so I’m going to be honest from the start here and admit I was a bit of a bandwagon hopper heading to Poland to support the Irish soccer team. Nevertheless, I packed my bags and with four other ultras from Glenelly for Gdansk we began (via Belfast, Luton and Sopot). Croatia saw to it that our hopes were slim to none before the trip got off the ground, but we carried on regardless to one of the many camp sites for fans. For a tournament that had 16 different nations taking place, it was hard to find anyone that wasn’t Irish. In fact, if the Irish side hadn’t qualified you’d wonder who would have been there. The odd Croat, Spaniard and Italian stuck out like a sore thumb in the fan sites and streets which were a sea of green. As if we needed any encouragement to sing, a special Snow Patrol gig for Ireland fans was on the agenda, and exceptional it was too. We even bumped into a few fellow pilgrims from the northwest. “Any tickets going?” A Castlederg girl said she might – we were to text her the next day. So match day two came and the Tyskie flowed. Tens of thousands of Irishmen invaded Gdansk town centre and a Dub on top of a fountain led the singing - “You’re never gonna believe us, you’re never gonna believe us, you’re never gonna believe us…we’re gonna top the group!” Nobody did believe us. The noise and colour was a sight to behold, and our Polish hosts were bowled over by our misplaced optimism and blind enthusiasm. Then, the Castlederg wan texts – she’d already sold the tickets! Panic. At the eleventh hour outside the Gdansk Arena we acquired two for a princely sum, and we stood and watched as the greatest team to ever play the game dismantled Ireland, 4-0. Iniesta, Xavi, Alonso, Fabregas, Torres, Ramos, Silva - superstars one and all. To see these guys in the flesh was a privilege. And still we sang. Louder than ever! A German TV commentator stayed silent for the last five minutes
of the game so his viewers could fully appreciate the atmosphere. Keano wasn’t pleased though. The same boy that felt the Manchester United fans didn’t get behind their team enough, was now crabbit that Ireland fans were too supportive. As they say in his part of the world – ‘langer’. A hellish train journey across Poland followed, but Poznan was worth it. Here we sang all night with the Polish as they too exited the tournament. We picked up their favourite chant which sounded something like “Polska yellow Germany…” I have since learned this to be “Polska biało czerwoni”, meaning ‘Poland in the red and white’. I even discovered I made a fleeting appearance on Polish television singing this, thanks to Youtube. Tickets were much easier to come by for the Italy game, and everyone got sorted. FAI Chief Executive John Delaney actually handing out two free tickets to one member of my travelling party in the team hotel. Poznan’s Old Market Square was a sight to behold beforehand, and the atmosphere was electric. I saw four fellas dressed as the infamous Wexford TD Mick Wallace, while others came as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Wario. The locals’ love affair with the Irish fans continued to blossom, and many donned green for the day, had their faces painted in the Irish colours, and sang with us all night. As we took our seats and looked out across the Municipal Stadium in Poznan, Tony pointed out flags with ‘Lifford’ and ‘An Strath Ban’ dotted around and we wondered if our Glenelly one would catch a camera man’s eye too. Another defeat followed, this time to the Italians, and despite Roy Keane’s comment’s which inferred that the Irish fans don’t care that the team played awfully, there was a palpable sense of anger and frustration in the stands. In hindsight, perhaps we can take some solace in the fact that we were up against the two best teams in the competition, as well as a very impressive Croatian side. So home we went, this time via Berlin, Gatwick, Belfast and Magherafelt. The backlash against the fans sense of fun having already begun as some Irish people flexed their muscles in an activity we are good at – begrudgery. Officials at UEFA weren’t as cynical, awarding the Irish fans for their behaviour and contribution to the tournament. But the dream was over, our star had fallen, and hopes for Rio in 2014 look grim. But, as the bard of Belfast Van Morrison notes in Coney Island, “ah, but the craic was good”.

DERRY’S LONGEST-RUNNING RESTAURANT UNVEILS DELICIOUS LOW-FAT MENU is wholesome. We use only fresh produce, most of which is locally sourced and our ingredients are selected from only quality suppliers. All dishes are prepared daily on the premises and are individually cooked to order. There is no pre-cooking of dishes made in bulk at India House restaurant. All our marinades and sauces are made from scratch using an abundance of rich, pungent spices.
City’s longest-running restaurant India House brings healthy eating to Carlisle Road just in time for the summer holidays. Thanks to India House, established since 1984, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating out. Sukhjit Nagra of family run India House restaurant says If you’re like me, there’s nothing more enjoyable than a night out savouring good food in a relaxed social environment in the company of friends and family. But if you’re watching your weight – a night out can be a nightmare for your diet. I’ve been there, both as a member of Weight Watchers and Slimming World and I know what women want when it comes to eating out – healthy food that’s low on saturated fat but high in flavour.
Low fat, full-flavoured As an on-off dieter for many years, I was surprised how many people, men and women, perceive Indian food as fattening and are warned off it. In fact the kind of authentic Indian cuisine we specialise in at India House is low in fat, and incredibly nutritious. For many years we’ve served a wide selection of healthy dishes that are considerably less fattening than other European, fusion and world dishes. Now we’ve taken our health conscious focus a step further, revolutionising the way people in the North West think of Indian food. We’re now delighted to unveil the results of an innovative partnership with one of the UK’s top independent food labs who’ve advised us on how to slash our fat content to 3 % or lower while

By Kevin McAnena It’s being hosted by the local Tullywhisker Pipe Band, and is being held in the Castle Inn, Castlederg. The entertainment on the night will feature a variety of music from accordion to pipe and flute bands. As many as 73,500 people in Northern Ireland are living with diabetes. Organisers are hoping to raise as much money as possible for the charity, especially as several of their members have first-hand experience of diabetes including Pipe Major, Bert Waugh’s six-yearold grand-daughter who has Type 1 diabetes. Gordon Catterson from the Tullywhisker Pipe Band said: “After the success of last year, we’re
delighted to be holding the charity band night again to help raise funds for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland. Most of us know somebody who has diabetes and the number of people living with the condition is growing every year, so it’s a very worthy cause. I’d like to encourage all those from the Derg Valley area and even further afield to come along to what promises to be a fantastic night of entertainment.” Naomi Brown, National Fundraising Assistant for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland said: “Last year’s event was a great success, raising a fantastic £2035. As a charity, we rely on events like these to provide vital funds for research, care and support for those affected by diabetes and I’d like to thank all those involved in organising the Tullywhisker band night. I hope as many people as possible come along and support the event on the night.” Doors will open at 8.30pm for the event and organisers are encouraging all those attending to make a £5 donation on the night. The money raised will be split between Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and Huntington’s Disease Association.

Goodbye to the Kings Of Our Hearts Walking through the gates of Croke Park I never could have predicted the emotion I would feel when I saw the stadium for the first time. As 80,000 Westlife fans found their places I stood still, in awe of the wonderful spectacle that surrounded me, for the first time in my life I was speechless. By Megan Conroy I will never forget the first moment I heard Westlife, I was nine years old and just coming to terms with the departure of Boyzone from my life, from that very moment Swear it All Over Again was played I was hooked. I did not however anticipate the adventures this boy band from the West
that it was the horror of being seated at the very back row that started the waterworks. Whoever sold them tickets were right pair of sham artists. Those were the days!! Keeping this previous mishap in mind, I was determined not to let the first concert bare any similari-
‘I really had convinced myself that I would marry Shane and live in a mansion in Sligo with him’ of Ireland would take me on. It has been a journey to say the least. Unlike many other Westlife fans who will argue that they spilt prematurely and the decision was made without any consideration for their fans, I disagree. Why not quit while you’re ahead and end an astonishing career on a euphoric high, with your dignity and friendships intact. Well that is exactly what my boys did; they sold out the biggest venue in Europe and put on a performance that would have reduced their harshest critic to tears. My first Westlife concert will forever be a day that I will never forget, or my long-suffering
ties. I arrived at my friend’s house wide-eyed and bushy tailed the morning the Croke Park tickets went on sale, bearing in mind that the first date had sold-out in record time, we were on the ball. “Let’s see if we can get Golden Circle, “I shouted at my poor friend as she frantically tried to type the details into Ticketmaster. To our delight and complete disbelief we got three tickets for the Golden Circle, now we just had seven months to wait. To paint a better picture, I should explain the depth of my love for Westlife before I begin to sound like a raving lunatic. After the first concert I was smitten. I really had convinced myself that I would
mother, who has been dragged to everyone since! Rewind 12 years ago, Westlife were in their peak with sell-out tours across the globe their tickets were like gold dust. Virtually impossible to get your hands on, never did I imagine they would be the most expensive tickets to date. £180 was paid in exchange for two tickets for their first night in the Odyssey Arena. Trouble was I got a little over-excited and burst into hysterics before they even took the stage. My mother will say I was inconsolable but I will argue
marry Shane and live in a mansion in Sligo with him, to my defence I was a young, naïve teenager with love hearts in her eyes, this did however lead to some crazy and almost criminal antics, that incriminated my friends who came along for the ride, Anyone who knew me then, teachers, friends and family were aware of my little fascination with the then five-piece superstars. On one occasion I tried to escape from school when I heard a little rumour about their whereabouts (they were attending a wedding
in Dunnyloop which turned out to be true) and wanted to go and investigate, could I get out? Of course not! This injustice leads to a minibreakdown in school the following day when a fellow student decided to bring in her pictures of her meeting them. In blind rage I stormed out of the classroom ran to the toilets and exploded. Not exactly something I was proud off but that was cruelty. I have been given so much stick in the past about my love for Westlife I could write a book but I will always defend them till the day I die. That’s dedication right there. One teacher found this quite amusing and it became a daily occurrence for us to bicker about them. One day he decides to tell me that they would be in Omagh that weekend turning on the Christmas lights. Assuming this was a wind-up I didn’t believe him however the little voice inside me told me to double check, so I did. Ringing around the radio stations they confirmed it, so I set sail to Omagh convinced this was my moment, finally I would meet them. When you are young, you believe that you can do anything; you’re immune to the dangers that surround you and will get what you want no matter what the consequences are. Well I did anyway. That night in Omagh is a prime example of how you believe you are invincible. Hoards of fans lined the streets that night as barriers were put in place to keep the area secure. Myself and a few of my friends stood patiently waiting for the first glimpse of Westlife. A few hours later we guessed they were a no show and we had been led up the garden path. This was until I spotted Brian walking up the steps and without any control over my body I jumped the barrier. Not looking back, I ran as fast as I could and stopped right below the stage. Singing my heart out to ‘Mandy’ I was blissfully unaware that my friends had followed suit and were now trying to hoard me up onto the stage, they were being watched. Before I knew it we were wrestling some policemen and running up the
street after Westlife. As they frantically tried to get into their cars I seen Shane’s fiancée Gillian, all I can say is I shouted some profanities and took off before the cop caught me. Reflecting back now on the memories of my time as a diehard Westlife fan, I find it surreal they have spilt. The insanity that surrounded them in those early days did die down in later years but their legacy could be compared to Beetlemania. It was evident when they took to the stage that final time that hearts were breaking everywhere, not only my own. When we arrived in Dublin, excited and nervous, the rain was pouring from high heavens. Unfazed by the bleak weather we left for Croke Park a little after schedule. After positioning ourselves in perfect view of the stage the realisation of this event hit home. I fought hard not to get emotional but that became impossible when they
took to the stage. Bursting into a heartwrenching rendition of ‘What about Now’ the boys themselves found it difficult to fight back the tears. They were clearly amazed at the crowds of people there to support them. As we sang and cried our way through the two most amazing hours of our lives, we could not feel anything but deflated when they said their goodbyes. Thanking their fans has always been on the list of priorities to the boys but they could not put in to words how thankful they were for the continued love and dedication their fans have given them through every hurdle they have faced. They have shared their happiness, pain, love and sorrow with us and for that we will be forever thankful to them. That night in Croke Park will be imprinted in the hearts of all their fans.

Locals urged to be vigilant as skimming devices discovered MANY families in the Strabane area were dealt a financial blow last week as fraudsters cleared out a number of bank accounts in the town using skimming devices. BY Megan Conroy It is still unclear as to how many people have fallen victim to the heartless crime which is believed to have been orchestrated by a gang of criminals operating from an area yet to be identified. Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Brian McMahon has urged anyone in the Strabane area who may have used an ATM in the last week to check their bank account balance immediately: “I am aware of a large number of people including a number of work colleagues and close friends who have had their savings completely cleaned out in what was clearly a major skimming device operation targeting a number of different ATM’s in the town area during the week. “ The two ATM machines affected appear to be The Bank of Ireland machine on the Ledford Road and the Ulster Bank machine at the old Long’s site. Mr Mc Mahon said: “The total number of people who have fallen victim on this occasion is still unclear so I would encourage anyone who has used an ATM in the Strabane area within the last week to check your account balance immediately and to contact your bank and have your card cancelled if you suspect any money has been withdrawn without your knowledge.” It is believed that money was withdrawn from ATMs in Galway, Limerick and Tipperary on
separate occasions last week. It is feared the criminals are working on a wider scale when a number of victims were contacted by their banks. One victim Geraldine Brown explained how she had discovered the crime: “The bank rang me that morning to ask if I had made a withdrawal in Pakistan. I initially though it was someone playing a joke on me. They took whatever I had left in my account. They told me it would be investigated and should take up to 5-7 days to get the money bank; Times are hard enough without people robbing hardworking, honest people. I hope they discover how this has happen.” Cllr Patsy Kelly, a local businessman, said: “These devices are a scourge to ordinary decent people, who are being cleaned out by callous, cynical criminals and we must all pull together to ensure that they are sought out and brought to justice.” Victims will be fully compensated by their bank provider but it is still unclear as to when they will be reimbursed.

Hi and welcome back, I want to start today with a question to you... If you could pick ONE mental skill to develop which would make a HUGE difference to your Golf game what would it be? It is a question I often ask people when I meet them for the first time and we begin to do our 1-2-1 sessions. Often, answers come back like better focus, improved concentration or better anger-management. Yet, there is ONE mental skill or discipline I think outweighs almost all and that is Pre – Shot Routine. I would go as far as to say every single one of us should develop a consistent and focused Pre Shot Routine, Why? • It distracts the mind from thinking technical and scores issues. • The mind likes consistency and reacts poorly to a lot of information at one time. • It helps you to control what you can control, over a set time. • By sticking to a set pattern, you develop a trigger and let it go. • The mind will see what you want to do, not fear what you do not want to happen. • The mind is on a target and is not thinking score or about your swing. To confirm this, I was watching some of the best players in the world at the Irish Open at Portrush, I am not interested in swing, or try to teach it, that is the job of a PGA pro, although I am PGA accredited in Golf Psychology, I was more interested in their patterns and Pre – Shots Routines. I was very impressed with GMac and Harrington, the same lead into the ball each time, you could time the routine it was roughly the same each

time. They work really hard at this and train their minds to react each time. If you get an opportunity to watch them take it and you will be impressed. Try this; simple 3 tasks Pre – Shot Routine approach.# Basically from the first tee to the last green for every shot just focus on the same 3 things only. 1. Visualise the shot all the way, including its trajectory and reaction on landing. 2. A Day of Rhymes and Roses After the series of ‘Tennents Untapped’ showcases taking place in Belfast and Derry, as highlighted in this column last month, Strabane Rapper Gerard i2 has now been confirmed to play the forthcoming Tennents Vital festival later in the summer. After impressing the judges, made up of Irish music industry heads, Gerard i2 became the talk of the ‘Untapped’ showcases and will now perform at the event due to be held in the Boucher Playing Fields, Belfast on August 22. The Strabane rapper will play alongside The Stone Roses, Florence and the Machine and Rodrigo Y Gabriela. It is a major achievement for Gerard i2, real name Gerard McDaid, who so far has two self-produced home-made albums under his belt. The ‘Herald’ caught up with him on the day after he learned the ‘Vital’ news, and found a young man buzzing with excitement.
“I played a good gig, well so everybody kept telling me, but I never thought for a second that I would actually be picked to open one of the gigs. When I heard the news I initially thought it was a joke but when I realised they were serious I was just so happy,” he explains. The ‘Vital’ gig will be Gerard i2’s biggest gig to date. Normally to be found raising the roof of local ‘intimate’ venues such as Dicey Riley’s, Katy Daly’s and The Pool Bar, Gerard has no qualms about taking his show to one of the biggest gigs in the country.
“It’ll be the biggest gig I’ve done and could well be the biggest gig I’ll ever do,” he modestly predicts. “There is going to be a lot of attention given to the gig simply because it’s The Stone Roses headlining after reforming last year. It’s the first gig they’ve done in the north for over 20 years, so to be part of that is just mad but I’m going to enjoy it. The smaller the crowd the worse it is for me as a performer, so this is probably the best place for me to be, in front a large audience, so I’ll be happy to get on that stage.” A Strabane Rapper sharing the stage with The Stones Roses and Florence and the Machine is surely a vindication of the work and artistic merit of Hip-Hop music in Strabane. Gerard agrees. “There are probably some people who think that Hip-Hop and Ireland doesn’t go together, but hopefully this will be just one of the many examples proving that there’s no reason why Irish Hip-Hop shouldn’t work. After all, it has worked out ok for me in this case,” he laughs. “The scene is good in Strabane,” Gerard continues. “Everyone has stepped back a little bit for the moment just to record their own stuff: people like Danny Houston, Stephen Mills and Darragh Kelly are all recording their own stuff at present. So on the live front, things are quiet but it’s going to come back pretty soon with a bang.” And it’s not only a scene featuring a few lads in Strabane, but the Hip-Hop community across the country is growing, with many of the artists keeping close tabs on each other. “I know a good few rappers from Dublin and Cork and few lads around Belfast,” explains Gerard. “It’s still very underground but hopefully it’ll become a bit more visible as time goes by. There are some die-hard Hip-Hop heads that want to remain underground and that’s fair enough. Personally, I like underground Hip-Hop but I also like some Dub-Step and commercial dance music, so I’m still making the kind of music that I like and music that excites me.” One of the many interesting characteristics of Gerard’s music is his choice of samples, which he finds from delving
Gerardi2 into old record collections. He recording studio is coming down with vinyl – a welcoming sight in 2012! “I love vinyl,” he enthuses. “Sometimes I would go through hundreds of records before I’d find something that I think might work in a song. I get most of the vinyl from my dad’s collection. I also gather stuff from charity shops. Sometimes when I listen to a record I can already picture where it could sit in a song. It might be a chorus or it could just be a simple thing that you could turn into a loop that would essentially make a song.” However, on top of the loops and beats, there needs to be lyrics. How did Gerard feel he has developed as a lyricist over the past few years? “I think I’m getting stronger and stronger with the stuff that I’m doing. They always say you should write about what you see, and that’s something I’ve always done, but I’ve tried to be a bit more imaginative now as well
and think outside the box a bit. While it’s important to represent aspects of yourself and your own life I also think there’s scope in detaching yourself from what you write and seeing where that takes you. I’m never saying anything just for the sake of saying something. Ultimately its entertainment and the shows are amazing craic with everyone bouncing together. Saying something is important but an audience has got to be entertained as well,” he explains. So what can the – no doubt Strabanimalistic – audience look forward to on August 22? “Well I now play with Chris ‘Smokes’ Patton on drums and that is working out brilliantly. I may even go for a full backing band for the ‘Vital’ gig but we would really have to see if that can work as there are a lot of samples and so forth to be taken into account. But we’ve got from now till the end of August to get ready and I can’t wait!”

PROFILE
Malcolm Nisbett Here is a short profile of the new owner of the Ostán na Rosann Hotel. Malcolm, originally from St Kitts in the West Indies has been involved in the hospitality industry for more than 25 years. He started working in hotels whilst studying Mechanical Engineering in college. He soon discovered the career he really wanted. After graduation he travelled to Canada and the United States. During his time in New Jersey USA, he obtained his degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Upon return to his native St Kitts, it wasn’t long before his talent for the industry was noticed by Mr Arthur Leamon. Arthur owned the then famous Golden Lemon Hotel, which was listed as number twentythree in the top 100 inns of the world. He appointed Malcolm as Assistant General Manager. With its international clientele, fine dining and reputation for top notch service, Malcolm discovered his passion for the business. During this time he met and married his Irish wife and in 1995 moved to Ireland. Over the years, his love for all aspects of the hospitality industry has led him down many paths. His advice and expertise has been sought on several occasions, particularly in the setting up of new restaurants and catering ventures. He currently lives in Dublin with his wife and two teenage daughters.

A-Levels- Goodbye! What comes next? What happens next? This is the frequently asked question many young adults who after 14 years of continuous education, find themselves examining, After months of strenuous revision and nervewrecking exams, their option - to enrol in university of course! By Megan Conroy From the moment you step inside those big shiny gates as a fragile and terrified 11 year old, teachers preach the importance of a university education to whoever will listen. The prospect of studying nine different subjects would not appear to be a daunting enough task for a young adult but preparing yourself for your future is crucial. Those peers do fail to mention the other options you have once you leave secondary school. Clearly the importance of education can in no way be undermined or disputed; if it wasn’t for university educations we would not have a team of highly-skilled doctors, solicitors or teachers that are essential in our society. However a successful career may not necessarily come as a result of a gruelling education. In today’s society the list of options available for teens after school is endless. Colleges for higher education offer many extensive courses that are aimed at a more vocational angle, which in hindsight would prompt success in a person’s chosen field rather than a three year non-practical degree. Take for instance, a young woman who has a dream of opening her own childcare business. Her careers advisor would suggest a degree in childhood studies,
to survive without your parents watchful eye looking over you. That lesson is learnt only by experience, being thrown in head first without any premonitions. Going to uni will provide every teenager with that life lesson but at 18 are you emotionally ready? Although I believe uni is a carving stone that shapes the lives of many, it is evident that schools do not in any way prepare students for the transition. The moment any child achieves their goals, whether it is winning first place in the egg and spoon race at Primary School, passing a spelling test or securing the grades they need to go to uni, parents are overjoyed at their achievements, the pride they feel comes second to none. Therefore it is understandable that every three years learning the methods and theories parent wishes their child the best start in life. used in early education, sounds ideal? Not par- Is sticking the rules of society always the best ticularly. The careers advisor most certainly way? will fail to mention to this girl that a course With many teenagers opting to postpone their offered in a higher education college will not step into higher education, it can be questioned only provide her with the needed qualifications if they have the world sussed better than their but also the amount of practical experience she peers. The phenomenon of gap years has taken would require. the travel industry by storm. Setting off across The pros of going to university will always outweigh the cons. You are given that muchdesired independence from your parents, you move in with your closest friends and have the full advantage of going out seven- nights- a – week and still rising for a 9am lecture. For any 18 year old the prospect of living the student lifestyle is exciting. As a prior student myself I would completely agree with the philosophy that those days surviving on beans on toast are the best days of your life. I should also mention however that I went to college at 21, imagining living that lifestyle at 18 is unnerving to me! Throughout school you are taught the ABCS, how to count without a calculator and how the world came to be, you are not taught how
the world with nothing but your bare essentials strapped to your back is the goal many aim for. Although it could be argued that claiming you are not emotionally ready for Uni at 18 but are to travel across the Southern Hemisphere is a contraction could be right. It could also be argued that the benefits of the Gap Year experience could prepare any young adult for three years living independently. Whether you are preparing to pack your suitcases into your parents car for that move to student halls, planning your trip abroad or are still undecided what your next move will be after the summer, take that well-deserved break as these decisions are not a matter of life and death.
Summer Activity Programme introduced at Riversdale CHILDREN across the Strabane District are set to enjoy of summer of fun activities due to a new initiative introduced by Riversdale. The summer promotion will allow for youngsters aged 16 and under to enjoy a range of sporting activities for £1. Council chairperson Thomas Kerrigan said: “Strabane District Council wants to encourage children and young people to increase their participation in sport and physical activity during the school holidays. “The council also wants to provide this service at an affordable price, as a result of this promotion young people throughout the district will be able to avail of all the activities Riversdale have to offer whilst at the same time having fun and making new friends.” The promotion applies to all activities before 5pm Monday to Friday and during normal opening hours on Saturday and Sunday. A wide range of activities are included in the promotion such as swimming, squash, badminton, table tennis, indoor hockey, five-a-side football, indoor bowls and use of the fitness suite. For those who wish to use the gym, Teen Gym sessions in the cardio suite will be offered to 14,15 and 16 year olds at £1 per session. Any teens wishing to participate in Zumba, circuit and spinning classes, they will be ran on a first come first serve basis on a Monday and Wednesday. Mum of one, Danielle Gillespie has welcomed the initiative: “It is difficult during the summer months to find things to do so that the children do not get bored; the reasonable prices mean that parents aren’t paying ridiculous prices that some leisure centres charge during the school holidays.” Parents are advised to pre-book the activities to avoid disappointment on arrival and are subject to availability. Children aged 7 and under should be supervised by an adult at all times. Full terms and conditions for this promotion can be found at www.strabanedc.com

With the help and support of their Slimming World group, Simon and Tracy Bartlett have lost 15st 6lbs between them to turn their life around and be crowned our Couple of the Year 2012. “We’d always struggled with our weight but saw it balloon after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Churg-Strauss” says Tracy. “I spent years in and out of hospital and had to take steroids daily which made me constantly hungry. It had a knock-on effect on Simon because he’d be right there beside me comfort eating too.” “We joined Slimming World because we realised that we had to do something before it was too late. We agreed that we needed a complete lifestyle change and one that would involve healthy eating and encourage us to build activity into our lives. Plus we needed support – and we found that in our inspirational, encouraging group. “We couldn’t believe we could eat foods like potatoes and pasta, have as much as we wanted and lose weight. But we stuck to the plan and whenever I felt hungry because of the steroids, I’d reach for my favourite Free Food snacks like vegetables and dip, fruit and fat-free yogurts. I lost 7½lb in the first week and Simon lost 6lb! “We swapped takeaways, junk and convenience foods for home-made healthy meals like steak, Slimming World chips, mushrooms and peas. We love to start the day with a big breakfast of bacon, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans and mushrooms. We also enjoy our favourite biscuits, sweets and crisps in moderation – we literally can have our cake and eat it! Food Optimising isn’t a ‘diet’, it’s a way of eating for the rest of our lives. Slimming World couple of the year 2012, Simon & Tracy, Our Consultant is so caring and understanding – pictured before and after their amazing weight loss journey.
nothing is ever too much trouble for her! We get so much inspiration and support from our friendly group. They share tons of meal and recipe ideas to keep us focussed for the week ahead. “As the weight came off we also started walking more and we were soon enjoying weekends exploring the countryside. We had no hobbies before, now we love walking our dog, swimming and Simon cycles to work every day. We both love our new-found energy, health and zest for life! “I’ll always suffer with Churg-Strauss, however losing weight has helped me to manage my condition by improving my health and making it easier to breathe. Slimming World has given us the tools to continue our journey, and with free lifelong membership to group*, staying at target will be a breeze. “As a couple we look forward to a future full of fun and adventures. We’ve booked camping trips for the summer and I can’t wait to try weird and wacky things like zorbing and bungee jumping – things I’d never have dreamed of doing before. Life is out there and you only get one shot. I just wish I’d found Slimming World and realised that years ago!” *When you achieve your Personal Achievement Target with Slimming World, you’re awarded free lifetime membership. This means you can attend your group for free whenever you’re within 3lbs of your target – giving you a top-up of motivation whenever you need it, and providing your fellow members with stacks of inspiration and ideas. Nationalists slam Last ever chance to see parking fi ne increases the great Charley Pride Country legend to bid farewell to loyal Irish fans!
Car parking price increases have the potential to further decimate trading in Strabane, according to a local councillor.
The greatest and arguably the most popular country singer in the world, Charley Pride, is coming to Ireland for his very last concert tour, to entertain, greet and meet his loyal Irish fans and bid them a final farewell. For the past 40 years, this wonderful performer has remained one of the Top 20 bestselling country artists of all time. On RCA Records, he is second in sales only to Elvis Presley.Despite all his success, Charley Pride is still a very humble man with a great love of people and of course, as his fans know, he has a great sense of humour which adds to the entertainment value of his live shows. His hits are legendary, like “Chrystal Chandeliers”, “Anybody going to San Antone?”, “ Kiss an angel good morning” “ All i have to offer you is me”, “Every Heart should have one”, “I’m so afraid of losing you” “Does my ring hurt your finger?” etc, etc. Since news filtered out of Charley’s farewell concerts at the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran on Friday and Saturday October 26 and 27 next, tickets have been snapped up, fans ensuring that they will not miss his last shows. Sadness has been mixed with happiness that they are being given the opportunity to say “farewell” and “thanks” for the memories. Showtours, who have been promoting music festivals in Bundoran for close on 20 years, have just announced spectacular “Charley Pride Farewell Music Festivals” for Bundoran

Patsy Kelly was speaking after his part, the SDLP, voted against a proposed rise in charges at the Assembly. He commented that at a time when many motorists are being hit by higher fuel costs and overinflated motor insurance premiums, it is morally wrong to be demanding that they fund a £7.5million shortfall in the Department of Regional Development’s budget by imposing increased car parking fines. “As well as being ethically wrong, it is also financially unsound to be relying on parking fees as revenue to fund a government department. Even if the 50per cent discount is availed on a £90 parking fine, this is far too severe and is disproportionate to the offence.” Mr Kelly continued: “Towns such as Strabane are being decimated by parking restrictions as it is. This has the potential to have a further impact on the footfall on our local high-street. This will also do little in the way of revitalising our town centres and encouraging people, particularly those who are disabled or retired, to shop locally.” “In the past I have called for the minister to come to Strabane to see for himself the affect already stringent carparking restrictions are having on the town centre. I reiterate that call. As a trader
and as an elected representative I can see at first hand the detrimental effect this is having. Despite the opposition, the proposal was passed with the combined support of the DUP and UUP. Sinn Fein also opposed the vote, and West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty wants the DRD to review its service. He said: “While I recognise that the cost of delivering a cost effective management system it is important that this is not skewed to raising money at the detriment of local traders and residents. Towns like Strabane and Omagh have a very high instance of penalty notices compared to towns of a comparative size across the North and people are finding it hard to park and shop without receiving a penalty notice. Our town centre businesses already have their backs to the wall and this will be yet another blow in their efforts to survive. “I am calling on the Department of Regional Development to carry out a major review to ensure that the proper traffic management is cost effective in delivering a service that allows the free flow of traffic while also accommodating the local business community.”

Are you a BB outdoor girl? Are you out walking or at the gym but still want to look good? Then follow our BB guide to getting fit, flirty and looking good with-out the make-up! It is a must that you are protected while you are outdoors with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor). The higher the number you wear the longer protected you are ie: Factor 15 would normally give you 3 hour protection. Also most importantly the SPF protects against UVA and UVB. The UVA is the ageing ray and the UVB is the burning ray, therefore we would advise to look for both.

Their previous Balor performances of Forgotten (July ’11) and Silent (Oct ’11) were two of the very best shows we’ve seen in recent years. The Wheelchair On My Face promises to maintain these incredibly high standards. Starring Sonya Kelly from The Savage Eye, it’s part memoir, part theatre and part stand-up comedy. Sonya tells the often hilarious story of a short-sighted 7 year old getting her first pair of glasses. She realises that the world is more than a swirl of moving coloured blobs, that the people she’d been apologising for bumping into were really lamp posts and that she had been feeding bread to crisp packets in her local park. Maggie’s Tavern 18th Annual Darts Cup The conclusion of the Maggie’s Tavern 18th Annual Darts Cup was played out last week at Maggie’s Tavern. The two Semi Finals and Final were held on the night and was supported by a large and spirited gathering of darts fans. The first Semi Final featured John Flood’s versus John O’Brien’s Hardliners. This turned out to be the game of the night and only the final game in the best of five separated the teams. John Flood got off to a great start with Dom McFadden finishing on double eight. Hardliners responded with two in a row to go ahead with Liam McGuire finishing an 86 checkout and followed that by finishing double five. John Flood took the fourth game with young Joe Flood finishing a very tight game on double one. The fifth and final game saw both teams with several chances to claim victory. Hardliners claimed the game with Joe Kirk finishing double two. John Floods team included, John Flood, Joe Flood, Dermott Ward and Dom McFadden. OB’s Hardliners featured Liam McGuire, Danny McCallion, Joe Kirk and Gerard Porter The second Semi Final featured Jackie Corcoran versus The Glencar Inn. Jackie’s team started well by taking the first two games with Anthony Whoriskey finishing well on double twenty and then finishing a 59 checkout. Jason Orr claimed victory for Jackie’s team in the third game by finishing his favourite double sixteen. Glencar Inn were very unlucky in all three games and could not manage to find their true form. Jackie’s Team included Jackie Corcoran. Jason Orr, Davy Duncan and Anthony Whoriskey. Glencar Inn were represented by Charlie Shiels, Martin Crerand, Andy McLaughlin and Pajo Rafferty. And so the final of The Maggie’s Cup 2012 was contested by OB’s Hardliners and Jackie Corcoran. Jackie’s team just could not repeat the form they showed in the semi final win and came up against a

Footballer creates dream job opportunities for Northern Ireland teenagers When former Northern Ireland International Footballer David Campbell was injured out of the game just 5 years after playing against Brazil in the 1986 World Cup Finals, he could never have envisaged being the instigator of football career opportunities for thousands of young people across the World. The former Brian Clough protégé from Eglinton, Northern Ireland was hailed by many as ‘the next George Best’ during his early career which saw him play for the European Cup winning Club Nottingham Forest during the late 80’s. A career-halting injury age only 25 meant his future in football looked uncertain.
However a desire to turn his adversity into an opportunity saw him create David Campbell Soccer, now an award-winning organisation based in England which has expanded to include a recently launched initiative across 10 States in America and the soon-to-be launched football education programmes for Northern Ireland. The football education programme has been operating in England for 10 years with remarkable results, re-engaging young people back into education. Run in conjunction with schools and colleges, the courses cover all aspects of the football industry whilst specialising in coaching at all levels from Children to League, allowing for a
wide range of industry-related careers. Uniquely the project offers formal introductions to jobs as part of the course and with this years’ launch of David Campbell Soccer USA, there are hundreds of job opportunities in America also on offer. Says David Campbell, ‘I am genuinely excited to be offering this opportunity to young people across Northern Ireland as it’s a genuine through-route into a career in football. Interest in the courses is incredible so I know this is going to be an exciting opportunity for Northern Ireland with life-changing career chances for students age 16-19 who are selected to take part’.
In the first year, starting September 2012, five schools and Colleges across Northern Ireland will be hosting the courses; which in England attracts thousands of applicants annually. De La Salle College (Belfast), Holy Cross College (Strabane), Laurelhill Community College (Lisburn), Lisneal College (Londonderry) and Ballyclare Secondary School are the first 5 hosts chosen and have already attracted hundreds of applicants. Final interviews for applicants age 16-19 are taking place across Northern Ireland in the next few weeks with the first courses beginning in September 2012. For further information, call the soccer hotline on 0151 474 8811.

Time to Speak Up! what i think... Usually I begin writing this column with something that has happened during the month, something that has featured in the tabloids and captivated the readers; this month is different instead of expressing my opinion on a pointless topic, writing words with no real emotion or depth I plan to tackle an issue that unbeknown to you has cause for grave concern in this country. Every day a girl in this country wakes up, looks in the mirror and points out the flaws and imperfections they see which to the naked eye are non-existent. Fixating their eyes on their figure and probing the curves with disgust, to the average person this may seem like a typical womanly procedure but what happens when this daily routine becomes an obsession? Something that can grab hold of you with a force stronger than you or anybody around you can stop. Fighting with yourself in the mirror, comparing yourself to the airbrushed celebrities plastered across the pages of the glossy magazines wishing you had their shiny hair, toned stomachs and plumped lips may sound familiar but when you question your behaviour are you worried? Obviously you feel like you are like every other girl, you want to look beautiful and therefore if that means shedding a few pounds to do so, then why not? I can give a more realistic answer to that question, its simple- Anorexia! Before I go into the details of the horrific effects this terrifying illness can have on a sufferer and their family, I want to make it clear I am not trying to dismiss the need to live a healthy lifestyle but just simply
explain how easily it was and could be to fall victim to the disease. I was firstly introduced to the nature of eating disorders when I was 15 and studying Home Economics at school, we were taught how they are firstly diagnosed, the symptoms, the affects they have on families but most daunting of all, we were shown images of girls similar in age to me who had suffered. I remember vividly thinking that there had to be a reason to why this was happening. Where they bullied? Did they need to lose weight and just got carried away? Or did they really want a body like Britney Spears? Looking at the situation now, I believe all these factors play a role in the development of an eating disorder. After all those years the curse of eating disorders is still rife in this country. They haven’t magically disappeared, girls and woman are still suffering and what is the common reaction when you hear about the latest victim, shock. It baffles me to why people are mystified that the illness still exists, not only does it still exist, girls as young as 9 are now being diagnosed. What shocked me most recently was when I was stood behind a child no younger than 6, she turned to her mother
and said: “I want those diet tablets.” So in a world where a child is aware of dieting tablets, what are the chances that a young woman will not give in to the pressures of society? The taboo that surrounds the subject needs to be extinguished once and for all, not only do the victims feel shame but the solution the government has for sufferers in this country can be only described as careless and disgusting. One particular girl who suffers from Anorexia has not only had to battle the illness but also the NHS for treatment. Where is the fairness? An alcoholic can be treated for their disease but a young woman in her late teens who has cried out for helped has been classified as someone with a “mental disorder.” Sending a woman to a psychiatric hospital for treatment does not sound like a realistic solution to me. When asked why there were no facilities to treat the woman here, the answer was blunt. “We do not have any, you will have to go to England and pay for the treatment” In a world where image is everywhere it is hard to imagine that eating disorders will ever evaporate into thin air, but in a world where freedom of speech is a basic human right I think people should speak up for the people who can’t fight for themselves, For anybody who has read this and can relate in some way then I would urge you to send an e-mail to the health minister and express the need for a treatment centre in Northern Ireland for eating disorders.
