SAFTAD activity update THE SA Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors (SAFTAD) association is going to try and expand its membership to include more SA distributorships, agents and manufacturers. This decision was taken at this year’s SAFTAD AGM, held during the organisation’s annual tackle trade show. “The current members represent about 80% of the industry in turnover, but we certainly do not represent 80% of the companies active in the industry,” says the chairman, John Pledger. An organisation representing a bigger percentage of the industry will have more clout when negotiating with government, he explains. SAFTAD is already recognised by government as the representative of the fishing tackle industry, as Pledger was invited as SAFTAD representative to join discussions between government and fishing bodies on
For membership enquiries and information about next year’s show scheduled at the same venue on 23rd and 24th July 2011, contact Mary-Ann Hodgskin on Tel: 011 943 4921. Fax: 011 943 4859. Cell: 083 795 5588. maryannh@mweb.co.za.
issues like fishing permit fees and the management of water resources. As a result, the increase on saltwater fishing permits will be considerably lower than the fees proposed earlier this year, which caused such an outcry (at the time of going to press the new fee structures were not yet available). Recreational angling currently resorts under two government departments – the Department of Environmental Affairs, in particular Marine and Coastal Management, for saltwater, and
the Department of Water Affairs, which manages freshwater resources. “We made it clear that we will not consider paying for a freshwater angling license (currently there is no fee) unless the income is used to clean up dams and rivers,” he says. Other decisions taken at the AGM include the use of shell schemes for exhibitors at next year’s show, instead of the current cloth-covered metal frames, and also that only paid-up SAFTAD members will in future receive the address lists of visitors to the show. The current committee was re-elected: John Pledger (chairman), Mary-Ann Hodgskin (secretary and treasurer), with Howard Joscelyn of Apex Walker Brands, Abdullah Mia of Mias Wholesale, Ahmed Hoosen of Sensational Angling, Mark Pledger of Rapala VMC and Dave Levene of Stealth Fly Rod & Reel as action committee members.
SAFTAD membership secretary and treasurer Mary-Ann Hodgskin (left) has a long history in the industry as she used to work for Rapala VMC SA for twenty years before she left to start her own business, Unlimited Musicians — booking bands, organising events, functions etc. John Pledger approached her to help organise the annual SAFTAD show about five years ago — and has been doing it ever since, with the help of a few staff members. She is also responsible for helping to organise SAFTAD’s finances, membership applications, invoicing members and exhibitors. Closer to the show, preregistrations, the visitor registration system, allocation of floor space, security, cleaning of the hall, lighting and all the other things often taken for granted by exhibitors, keep her very busy.

SAFTAD show 56
SAFTAD Show sets new records ONCE AGAIN, the annual SA Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors show in Johannesburg at the beginning of August began and ended on a high note. With more exhibitors, more visitors and more floor space booked than before, this highly focused trade only show has demonstrated that the fishing industry is trading strong right through the recession The 1800m² floor space utilized by exhibitors at this year’s SAFTAD show, was a 29% increase on last year, says SAFTAD chairman John Pledger. “We lost 17 exhibitors that were at the show last year, but gained 20 new exhibitors.” A total of 58 companies showed their latest products to 686 visitors from 268 Southern African companies. Representatives from 54 of the companies visited for the first time. The 248 retail companies that sent representatives is a 14% increase on last year — this year this number included 107 fishing specialist stores, 79 outdoor stores, 59 stores selling sport and outdoor products, including fishing, and 3 dive shops. There were also 11 suppliers – distributors, agents and manufacturers, 11 media companies and two tourism establishments (a lodge and tour operator) represented. There were several industry trends evident at the show: • More and more women are becoming recreational, and even competitive, anglers – and this was evident in the growing number of women showing their own ranges at the show; or otherwise manning stands to explain product features with knowledge and authority. Pink rods, reels, bags and other accessories on most stands were further testimony to the growing importance of ladies in fishing. Most international brands now
also have products for ladies… although we have been told that some men enjoy using the lighter tackle in pink or purple. With the interest that will be generated by the Ladies Match Fishing World Championships at Bloemhof Dam at the end of October, interest in ladies angling is bound to grow even more; • There is also much more emphasis on the younger members of families, with combo’s and other products for kiddies – some as small as toddlers – being introduced by most brands. This is testimony to the growth of recreational angling as a family sport; • Despite the recession, more new brands and distributorships were introduced this year than at any SAFTAD show before. Several top European brands, with products that cover all fishing facets, were launched into the SA market – some of them through distributorships that are new to the industry; • Many exhibitors adjusted their ranges to reflect the current economic climate by introducing budget lines, or more affordable alternatives; • Among the interesting new product trends that were evident, are: o Pole fishing, so popular in Europe, is taking off in SA as well, with several exhibitors introducing equipment for this category that often draws thousands of spectators; o Several exhibitors launched preserved fresh bait – notably sardines – as a more natural, but lasting, alternative to artificial and fresh bait; o Spinning is growing in popularity, when judged by the many products introduced for fresh- and saltwater.

really big fish. The waterproof reel series comes with a completely sealed drag system, while the jigging and spinning rods are also designed for the angler who enjoys a hard fight. The thin, yet strong, PowerLite blanks of the jigging rods, fitted with Fuji heavy-duty reel seats and guides, are braid-ready and jig-weight-rated from 165gm-500gm. The Van Staal GT Spin rods offer custom quality with off-therack convenience. They also reintroduced the Japanese brand Ryobi to SA, with the Safari 5000 Metaroyal leading the pack with aircraft-quality ball bearings, Multi-Max anti-reverse, G-Stopper bail and a watertight FS drag system capable of a genuine 12kg of power. The attention grabbers on this stand were, however, the Quantum freshwater bass reels and rods — especially the signature series developed by American bass tournament pro angler Kevin Vandam, who has won more than $4m in prize money exclusively using Quantum reels. He also contributed to the extensive research and development that went into the whole range of Quantum reels and rods. The latest addition, the Smoke baitcasting reel, shows that small packages can pack a lot of power - weighing a mere 190gm, it is the lightest aluminium reel on the market, and offers precision and high performance through the Infinite ACS cast control system, a layered PT ceramic drag and seven super-smooth PT bearings, plus an antireverse clutch. It is complemented by the ultra-light, advanced design Smoke Lite Micro Guide casting rods in carbon graphite that should please even the most serious bass anglers, as it has passed the test on the toughest fish pound-for-pound in the world: the Papuan black bass. ‘This range offers really
ADRENALIN says that their objective is to meet the needs of every angler and they therefore ensure that the right products that will suit the needs of anglers in the SA market leave their factory. As sponsor of the Protea Ladies Angling team they cater for the growing ladies market and have introduced new bass and carp rods in pink. They also support youth angling through sponsorship of competitions and a children’s home in Robertson, where they promote angling as a constructive way for youngsters to spend their leisure time. This is in line with their philosophy of giving something back to the community. They believe that their entry level junior carp and bass Killer series, with bass rods wholesaling at the exceptional price of R35 ex VAT and a 10’ carp rod for R58 ex VAT, as well as an expanded range of combo’s starting at R69 ex VAT for an attractive rod, reel and line, will further encourage youngsters to start fishing. They have also expanded their Adrenalin accessory line with new knives, side cutters, scissors, tackle boxes and carp accessories. A new HMG (carbon) 12’ spinning and casting 3-piece rod was also well received.
Apex Walker AS ALWAYS, there were many interesting new items for the regular stream of visitors to the Apex Walker stand to see and examine. Apart from introducing new brands, they also showed several new additions to existing ranges. Among the new ranges they introduced is Van Staal, the robust rod and reel range that was built to withstand extreme challenges, and land the
