~~M~~

Brethren,

This month I'd like to share a brief excerpt from a book in my Masonic library at home, called The Craft and It's Symbols by Allen E. Roberts. The excerpt says "You will learn that Freemasonry does not remain static. J. Hugo Tatsch, a Masonic historian, pointed this out in a recently discovered letter he wrote in 1935: "The more I delve in American Masonic History, the less dogmatic I become on all points involved. Our Masonry developed with the country, and in studying the subject, we must look upon it in the light of contemporaneous events and not by present day customs and standards. The structure of Freemasonry is constantly changing and it is to this fact that we owe its preservation. The principles are transmitted unimpaired, but the vehicle through which they are expressed changes as the years go on." I find this passage particularly fitting for many reasons, chief among them is it serves as an allegory to the progression through the degrees as well as chairs of the Line. Masonry is precisely about not remaining static. A Mason with unused working tools remains precisely static. I am not implying one must become an officer. Hardly. I am simply pointing out my agreement that Masonry is about working on one's self - always improving - much like our intent for our country. A Mason is not satisfied with the status quo. He is an instrument of change. That change comes from the only place one truly has control over - himself.

Sincerely & Fraternally, Dennis G. Tyson Master
