Brethren, this has been to say the least a busy last part of my term. Some things did not go the way I would have liked but we had a good lesson in the workings of the code and the ancient land marks this year. Yet, all that’s happening makes me realize how proud I am to be a Mason. The end of my year is time to let the new officers coming in take over and show there abilities. We will be Michael J. Clark, P.M. having a busy next couple months and Worshipful Master 2011 need the support of all the Brothers to finish the year. Our planed trip to Virginia City was very special and we were well received. Everyone who attended enjoyed the visit. I want to thank Hap Hendricks, Jeff Byrnes and Chet Hayes for their support as well as Brother Brett Valentine from Dhahran. Escurial Lodge No. 7 has a lot of History and their secretary gave us some old pictures from an outdoor degree in Key Hole Canyon when M. W. Don Hines and W. Joe Bureski were still very active. I think we’ll get some frames and display them. If any Brothers have anything they would like to do or have done please give me an email or note and we will do our best to try to make it happen. You may want to send it to the incoming Master or secretary for there input. The dinner this month is for all Masons there wives and family’s so if can get names or number of attendees would be helpful.
Remember; God, Family and your job is to always come first!

October, the time of all hollows eve, when the ancients believed that the mist between this world and the next was at it's thinnest. You might literally pass right between the two. For the ancient peoples of Great Britain, France and Germany, this was a time of huge celebration, a time to connect with their ancestors and Scott Keiser renew their faith. To many today Senior Warden this isn't much more than silly superstition, but is it really. Faith is what is important and the fact that they took time not only to connect with their history and where they came from but, to renew their faith and commitment to One another in the here and now. In a time my brothers where Nellis has had more than one crisis in faith, let us renew our bonds of bf brotherly friendship and love. Let us concentrate on what is most important - each other. Let us stand together united and make our lodge strong in unity and faith. Fraternally, Scott

Some new Symbolism A Quick Response code or a QR code is a type of barcode first designed for the automotive industry. It has become popular due to its fast readability and large storage capacity. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. We are seeing these QR codes everywhere. Uses extend from commercial tracking to entertainment and from product marketing to instore product labeling. Many of these applications target toward mobilephone users who may receive text, add contact to their device, open a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), or compose an e-mail or text message after scanning a QR code. They can generate and print their own QR codes for others to scan and use by visiting one of several paid and free QR code generating sites or apps. QR codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, on buses, on business cards, or on almost any object about which users might need information. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the telephone's browser. This act of linking from physical world objects is called hard linking. For those of you who have embraced the smartphone scanning technology, we will begin including them in each Trestleboard so the reader can hard link to certain information such as our website, other local Masonic websites, and to the Grand Lodge website. In the near future we may even link the minutes of meetings, upcoming GL resolutions and any other important information.

American History and Nevada Masonry (Bro. Brian Higgins) After the chartering of Carson City Lodge #154, in 1862, under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of California, the Masons of Virginia City decided to act. The brethren were led by William H. Howard, Past Grand Master of Masons of California, but at the time a resident of what was the premier mining camp in Nevada, Virginia City. He may be said to have been the individual most responsible for founding a Masonic lodge in Virginia City. But however resolute the brethren in Virginia City may have been to establish a Masonic lodge, a dissonant note was heard amid the harmony, caused by regional animosity brought about by the concurrent War between the States. Both sides of the Mason-Dixon line were represented in Virginia City by sympathizers who had come seeking gold and fortune. From various historical sources concerned with the history of the Comstock lode it appears that there was unusual bitterness among adherents of both factions in Virginia City at that time. The Union sympathizers had no established headquarters in the town, considering the whole community their field of operation. They represented the majority of the citizens of Virginia City, including many Masons. The Secessionists, most of whom were from proud Southern families, congregated at the Virginia House, the best hotel in town. Prominent among those domiciled at the hotel was Charles Fairfax, the recognized leader of the Confederate cause in Virginia City. William H. Howard was another frequent guest of the Virginia House, and being a native of Tennessee, and for many years a resident of Louisiana, was strongly Southern in his outlook, and an acknowledged supporter of the Confederate cause. His Southern sympathies effectively excluded him from the confidence of those Masons who were supporters of the North. Although Brother Howard led the movement to organize a Masonic lodge in Virginia City, it was rumored that his Southern sympathies were the reason for depriving him of the honor of having the new lodge bear his name, as requested by the prospective members. Whether or not this is true (there is no documented proof), when the Grand Lodge of California issued a charter to the brethren at Virginia City to organize under dispensation, the wish of the petitioners was ignored, and the charter was issued under the name “Virginia Lodge #162,” instead of “Howard Lodge #162,” as hoped. The authority granting permission to organize under dispensation was issued January 15, 1863, by order of Grand Master William C. Belcher, Grand Lodge of California, and on May 24th, 1863, a charter was issued. William H. Howard had the honor of being the first Worshipful Master of the new lodge. The names of the necessary officers are recorded, along with the names of 26 Master Masons, and seven Entered Apprentices.

The unexpected name given to the new lodge elicited expressions of disappointment, dissatisfaction, and disapproval by the brethren at Virginia City for its failure to honor Howard, but he graciously accepted the decision, and pointed out to the brethren that he had been so honored once before, while Grand Master of California, by having Howard Lodge #96 of Yreka, California, named after him. And yet, it is proof that Brother Howard had confidently expected the new lodge would be named after him by the fact that he had previously ordered a complete set of officers’ jewels to be made, wrought from native silver mined from the Comstock lode itself (at no small cost), and with each jewel engraved "Howard Lodge." Brother Howard continued thereafter to work untiringly for Masonry, not only for Virginia Lodge #162, but throughout the district of Northern Nevada, attending and assisting the other lodges. To him may be further accorded the honor of having been instrumental in organizing the Grand Lodge of Nevada, which first met in Virginia City, in 1865. Sadly, he did not live long after, for Past Grand Master Howard died in 1866, only a few hours before the second annual meeting of Nevada Grand Lodge was convened. His body was borne to the meeting rooms of Grand Session, accorded Grand Honors, and there lay in state for the duration. (Source: Torrence, Masonry in Virginia City --Chapter III)
