Winemaker Dinners — Thursday, April 28
1
HOST: NIKKI & WES CHRISTIAN , Kansas City, MO
CHEF:
MICHAEL & CHRISTINA CORVINO , Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room
Michael is a highly acclaimed Kansas City chef known for his approachable, contemporary American dishes that are as beautiful to behold as they are to taste.
WINERY 1: JH WHEELER
Wheeler Farm is an homage to Charles H. Wheeler, founder of the St. Helena Vintners Club and visionary of what the Napa Valley could one day be. Today, the property is owned by Bart & Daphne Araujo, who have restored it to its vinicultural greatness, producing incredible expressions of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. You may recognize the Araujo name from the Eisele Vineyard property, which the couple recently sold to the famed Chateau Latour of Bordeaux.
WINERY 2: TOR
There are few modern names as iconic as that of Tor Kenward. Starting as a tour guide, Tor spent 27 years at Beringer Winery before “retiring.” Soon after, he would start the legacy that is Tor Wines, alongside his wife, Susan. If the wines here weren’t already hard enough to get your hands on, Phil Mickelson was spotted drinking Tor’s Black Magic Cabernet Sauvignon directly from his Master’s Cup!
2
HOST: GAYE & MARK COHEN , Mission Hills, KS
CHEF:
LINDA DUERR , The Restaurant at 1900
Linda’s experience throughout the years at Lidia’s, Frondizi’s, J.J.’s and most recently, the River Club, has culminated in widespread acclaim. In the Restaurant at 1900, she serves modern, American cuisine in a beautiful and contemporary setting.
WINERY 1: BOOKER
The story began in the 1920s when the Booker brothers purchased 100 acres of land within what is now the Paso Robles AVA. In 2001, Eric and Lisa Jensen purchased the property with the intention of creating the best wines in the region. The Jensens took everything they learned during their time spent at Saxum and L’Aventure and did just that!
WINERY 2: DUMOL
For many, DuMOL is the pinnacle of what the Russian River Valley has to offer. Since 1996, Single Vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah from cool sites have been the focus. Although their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has recently received great press!
3
HOST: NICKI & JEREMY FRY , Olathe, KS CHEF:
COLBY & MEGAN GARRELTS , Rye
Colby and Megan are a culinary power couple. They are award-winning chefs and respected cookbook co-authors, featuring progressive American cuisine using local and regional ingredients.
WINERY 1: DARIOUSH
Darioush and Shahpar Khaledi founded Darioush winery in 1997, but that isn’t where their story began. Growing up in Northern Iran, Darioush learned the ins and outs of winemaking from his father, a vintner in the historic town of Shiraz, located in the Zagros Mountains. Every aspect of Darioush’s namesake Napa Valley winery is based around his Persian heritage, including its amazing architecture.
WINERY 2: PEAY
Peay Vineyards is a first-generation Sonoma estate started in 1996 by Nick Peay, his wife Vanessa Wong (formerly of Peter Michael), and brother Andy Peay. Located along the “true” Sonoma Coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 54 acres of estate vines create the ultimate expression of cool climate Rhone and Burgundian varietals.
4
HOST: BETHANY & TREY HUMPHREY , Mission Hills, KS
CHEF:
JOHNNY & HELEN JO LEACH , The Town Company
Johnny intertwines rustic roots and refined beginnings that embody the Kansas City experience as we know it today. Along with his wife, executive pastry chef Helen Jo, the two have created menus that celebrate local culinary traditions with elevated, modern traditions.
WINERY 1: AXR
Founders Kelly Trevethan, Mark Schratz, and Don Van Laeken have brought in Alpha Omega winemaker Jean Hoefliger to create one of the most exciting new projects in Napa Valley. Together, the team at AXR creates ultra-premium examples of everything from Chardonnay to Syrah to Cabernet Sauvignon.
WINERY 2: VÉRITÉ
Located just outside Healdsburg, Vérité is a project of love founded by Jess Jackson of Jackson Family Wines and winemaker Pierre Seillan. The Sonoma property focuses on individual expressions of the three key Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Vérité has garnered more 100-point wines than any other estate in the world.
5
HOST: GRETCHEN & NEIL KARBANK , Mission Hills, KS
CHEF:
RYAN BRAZEAL & JESSICA ARMSTRONG , Novel
A graduate of Johnson County Community College’s culinary program, Ryan made his mark in New York City before opening Novel. The restaurant moved to the East Crossroads a few years ago, with an expanded menu, full cocktail program, and Jessica’s gorgeous desserts getting equal billing.
WINERY 1: LARKMEAD
The roots of Larkmead Vineyard date back to 1884, making it one of the oldest family-owned winemaking estates in the Napa Valley. Since 1948, the Solari family has held ownership over the property, which is under current stewardship of Kate Solari-Baker and her husband Cam Baker. Famous mostly for their 100% Cabernet Sauvignon expressions, Larkmead has seen many prestigious winemakers through their doors, including Paul Hobbs and Dan Petroski.
WINERY 2: SENSES
Senses Wines is the dream of three childhood friends. Chris, Max, and Myles partnered with critically acclaimed winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown (Schrader Cellars, Rivers-Marie). The team produces wines from coveted vineyard sites throughout Northern California, in both Sonoma and Napa Valley.
6
HOST: TERESA & TOM WALSH , Mission Hills, KS
CHEF:
BRANDON BRUMBACK , The Savoy Kansas City
Brandon returns to his home city where he began his career at 16 years old. After culinary school, he took on influential roles at many high-profile restaurants, including Napa Valley’s Bouchon and The French Laundry, Chicago’s Blackbird, Grace, Ria, and Roister.
WINERY 1: APERTURE CELLARS
Andy Katz made his name as one of the most well-known photographers of his generation. During his global travels, alongside his son Jesse, the Katz’ experienced many of the best wine regions in the world. Their adventures came full-circle when Andy and Jesse opened Aperture Cellars, a winery dedicated to the best cool-climate sites in Sonoma for Bordeaux varietals. Today, Jesse is producing the wine and Andy turns their love of grapes into photographs, uniting the two art forms.
WINERY 2: JONATA
Kansas native Matt Dees leads the team at Jonata, sister winery of Screaming Eagle, located in the Santa Ynez Valley just outside Santa Barbara. Praised throughout his career by Robert Parker Jr. of the Wine Advocate, Matt is known for putting a Bordeaux touch on his non-traditional red blends. If you find yourself in the area, Matt’s newly built winery is absolutely stunning. Truly the Screaming Eagle of the Central Coast.
