44th Annual Nelson County Fair July 16th thru July 21st Nelson County Beekeepers will have a honey booth at the Nelson County Fair. We will be hosting a Honey Competition for ALL of our members, whether you are in the county or not. We also welcome any non-members who keep bees, but they must live or have hives in Nelson County. Schedule as Follows:

Friday 13th is Set Up and starts at 8:30 am

Monday 16th Honey Judging at 12:00 pm

Monday thru Friday from 5:00 pm to 10 pm

Saturday 21st 3:00 pm to 10:pm

Sunday 22nd Break down starts at 1:00 pm

We usually lock up at 9:00 pm each evening. Volunteers should come before the start times to get into the fair and get your car park behind Samuel's Hall building. Bee Club display is located inside.

For those of you that have put your names on the list to work the Honey Booth, I will have passes for you at the Extension Office to be picked up on Friday 13th during business hours. If that is a problem please contact Susan Zhunga (507-8789) to make other arrangements to pick up your passes. Your name must be on the work list get a pass. These passes give you free entry and parking while you are working. We are guests at the Fair, so please do not give your pass to anyone else, unless they are schedule to work.


Page 4 HONEY FOR SALE For Members Only - who would like their honey to be sold at the Fair, please pay attention to the following regulations. Honey labeling is required a. The word HONEY and must be the largest word b. Name ( what ever you choose), Farm, Personal

c. Location – Address (and/or phone # ) d. Weight – oz & grams The words “Pure” “Natural” and “Raw” are acceptable. Contact information on the label is required by law. This information goes on the bottom third of the front of the label. Must have at least 12 jars for sale. A squeeze bottle for tasting is required. All honey for sale must be dropped off at the Extension Office on Friday the 13th during business hours, or brought to me at the Fair grounds during the set up time which starts 8:30am. Also can be dropped off Sunday the 15th between 3 and 4 pm. You can call me if you have any questions. (Susan 502-507-8789) Below are the only sizes to be sold and prices we will be charging at the Fair. The club will retain $1.00 per bottle sold. The members will receive their proceeds at the meeting on July 26th.

Honey Contest All jars to be entered into the contest must be in 1 lb clear glass queen line jars. The only exception, is the Black Jar contest. Those jars must be the small 2oz jars or any small unused food jar, baby food size, with the glass portion painted black. This honey will be judged based on taste alone. All jars must be free of any markings, labels or any type of identification. You will be given a contestant number when honey is dropped off. Schedule for drop off and pick up are at the beginning of this newsletter. Honey will be classified according to it's color. From the lightest to darkest. Only one jar per category per person. One jar only per person for Black Jar competition. Contestants will be judged by the following standards: Prizes money and ribbons will be awarded by the Nelson County Fair. 1st place $5.00 - 2nd place $4.00 - 3rd Place $3.00 - and Black Jar (Best of Show) $10.00 plus the Rosette. Addtional PRIZES – Club Members Only 1st place $25.00 - 2nd place $15.00 - 3rd place $10.00 Black Jar $25.00 Thank you all in advance for your participation and your


Page 7 help. We hope this 2nd annual Honey Show at the Fair is as successful as the first. Wait until you see the New and Improved air-conditioned building. Samuels Hall was renovated over the winter with tremendous improvements and upgrades.
