The Nelson County 4-H Market to Market Ham Club took the time to visit a hog farm, in order to discover where their “green hams� may have come from. Mr. Jay Filiatreau took the Ham
Club members from barn to barn via hayride, all while explaining the hard work and cost that goes into raising pigs for food. Members had excellent questions and one of the best parts? At the end of
the meeting Mr. Filiatreau grilled delicious pork burgers! Many thanks to Mr. Filiatreau for having 4-H out to the farm, we look forward to touring again next year!

4-H Teen Council The Nelson County 4-H Teen Council was excited to take part in a leadership workshop presented by the State 4-H Secretary Rebecca Hayes.

Eight excited 4-Hers enjoyed the first in a series of 4-H Electricity workshops. The 4-Hers and many of their parents toured the Salt River Electric warehouse and learned about the equipment needed to keep the
lights on in our community. They also got a behind the scenes look at the grid and the computer system that monitors outages. The group is very grateful to the leaders Billy Marks and Tracey
Hopper for sharing their extensive knowledge with the group. They are looking forward to learning about circuits next month.

8th Grade AP environmental Science students at Bardstown Middle school are learning about mass, velocity, the nitrogen cycle and much more
through their participation in the 4-H Unlocking the Mystery of the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach program. The students will continue
participating in 4-H science activities throughout the spring including the 4-H speech contest and possibly a field trip to the Environmental Camp!

On our March 6 cooking club meeting, “The Dicers” learned how to make sausage gravy and biscuits. We also watched a video on how to make it, and the leaders spoiled what his secret ingredient was! We had an amazing time with about 35 kids attending our club, and everyone that tasted it, said it was delicious!

4-H encourages young people to set and achieve their goals. To that end, the Kentucky 4-H Achievement Program was created to reward ambitious and accomplished young people throughout the state. 4-H’ers can start accumulating points as soon as they start 4-H and begin earning recognition in the sixth grade. 4-H’ers at least in the 10th grade, and who have reached Level V can apply for the gold award. Each district can submit 10 applicants for the gold award. Of the 70 statewide applicants, 30 are selected. The competitive program consists of an application, and a panel interview portion. Gold Competitive Achievement winners receive a full scholarship to the Teen Conference on the University of Kentucky Campus June 13 – 17, 2016 and an $800 scholarship towards attending National 4-H Congress Conference.

of communicating effectively. We participated in a skit, which was a simplified way of explaining how a bill becomes a law. The lobbyists even persuaded the voters with candy. We held rapid
fire debates, in which two people debated a simple issues like whether flat bill hats should be worn in public. Next month we plan to visit the capitol.
What is a 4-H Project? What is a 4-H Project? 4-H members participate in projects where they are asked to accomplish a task, i.e., make something, develop a skill, raise and/or train an animal, etc. There are numerous projects available to 4-H members including: foods, clothing, public speaking, aerospace, wood science, livestock, health, gardening, photography, and MUCH MORE! Members DO NOT have to be a member of a project specific club in order to complete a 4-H project. 4-H
members begin by exploring their interest. They may select one or more projects, and receive a project manual which guides them through the activities. 4-H projects are age appropriate. The 16 year old 4-H member will be expected to do a more advanced project within their area of interest, whereas the 10 year old might be working with and introductory activity. One of the most important aspects of 4-H project work is that the 4-H member decides what they want
to learn and do as they explore their project. This allows the project to be self-paced, and gives children important skills in setting and working toward their goals. NOW is the time to be working on your 4-H projects!
