Spotlight of the Month National 4-H Week and Cloverbud 4-H Fun Nelson County 4-H celebrated National 4-H week by hosting a 4-H Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, October 4th. This event recognizes volunteers, sponsors, 4-H families and community partners. A week before the vent, 3 members of the Nelson County 4-H participated in a 4-H walk, where they visited most of the downtown merchants to invite them to the event and thank them for their support of 4-H. They were each given a flyer that they could post in their window recognizing 4-H week. On the day of the event, we also hosted an introduction to 4-H for our youngest members, the Cloverbuds. Nineteen 5-8 year olds, 3 teen volunteers, and 4 adult volunteers participated in activities such as woodworking, rubber tire stamp making, nature prints, and introduction to communications projects, and 4-H yoga. The Cloverbuds also learned about food safety by participating in a Glow-germ activity. Once they passed the test and showed their hands were clean, they learned about measurements and food presentation by completing Pumpkin Patch dirt pudding snacks. This also served as their service project for the day, as they made around 50 desserts to be served at the luncheon. Around 80 guests including local, state, and federal governmental leaders attended the luncheon. At the luncheon, they were served a nice lunch and had the opportunity to visit information booths about our 4-H clubs. Representatives from the clubs shared their knowledge of 4-H and even got to be interviewed for local media. It was a fun day impacting around 50 folks before the event, around 80 the day of the event and many more who were able to see the event highlighted in local news.

Wearable health trackers and smart watches, have allowed us to monitor ourselves like never before. During 4-H National Youth Science Day, 4-H’ers will learn how these technologies work as they design their own in an experiment titled Incredible Wearables. 4-H National Youth Science Day promotes the organization’s science-related programming efforts. Annually, during the month of October, millions of young Americans participate in the world’s largest youth-led science experiment. In Nelson County, we’ll conduct the experiment in around 20 classrooms 4-H’ers will use engineering principles to

build a functioning wearable health monitor using a low-cost, small computer and sensors. They will learn how to track their physical fitness using the monitor and analyze the data from the technology on a computer, tablet or mobile phone. Young people will also learn about careers related to the wearable technology industry which range from fashion designer to mobile app developer. To find out more about the 4-H National Youth Science Day experiment or how to get involved in science-related 4-H projects, contact the Nelson County Cooperative Extension Service.

Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences Academy Congratulations to JT King for being accepted into the Natural Resources and Environmental Science Academy. The NRESci Academy is a three-year program designed to teach youth about their natural environment. In the program, scholars participate in hands-on investigations to learn about Kentucky’s water, forest and wildlife resources. Each year of the three -year program, scholars concentrate on a different core area (water, forestry, wildlife) and interact with experts in each of these disciplines. Scholars participate in a variety of field exercises, including stream sampling, forest

measurement data collection, wildlife survey, insect collection and identification, and much more. Scholars also have the opportunity to visit natural areas throughout the Commonwealth, and learn about the diverse natural resources in our state. Scholars who have graduated from the academy in good standing may apply to be NRESci Teen Ambassador (a one-year commitment).
