Nelson CPR Station Rehabilitation: Regional Visitor Gateway-Business Opportunity Centre The Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce successfully negotiated the transfer of the heritage train station from CP Rail in the summer of 2010. Since that time the Chamber has been working methodically to complete the project.
and the Nelson Kootenay Lake Destination Marketing Organization will be housed. A range of private and public sector uses will fill the remaining portions of the building, adding to the vibrancy of this new place of business.
The Regional Visitor Gateway-Business Opportunity Centre is the biggest restoration project of a single 10,000 square foot heritage building in the City of Nelson, undertaken by a Non-Governmental Agency at a total cost of $3.5 million dollars.
This Regional Visitor Gateway is a main component of a major downtown/waterfront renewal project the City of Nelson is embarking upon; namely the land redevelopment of underutilized industrial property at the west end of historic Baker Street. The RVG is a cornerstone of this Downtown Waterfront Master Plan land remediation and seen as a catalyst for further new land use, real estate development and other economic opportunities.
The Station project will fully restore one of the area’s most treasured landmarks, due to CP Rail’s historical economic importance to this region and the building’s architectural significance. Inside the building, a full service Regional Visitor Information Centre will complement an interpretive display that showcases the area’s character, businesses, investment opportunities, heritage and cultural diversity. The Regional Visitor Gateway will feature a special “Made in the Kootenays” marketing showcase. Next door, new offices for the Chamber of Commerce, the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership,
The Board of Directors of the Directors of the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce would like to thank our municipal, regional, provincial and federal supporters. Special thanks to the Provincial Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation, and the Columbia Basin Trust. We look forward to visitors being able to enjoy the space in late 2015.
