Back to school week For her 5th birthday last week Katie Goulter, above with dad Tim, got plenty of great presents, but she won’t get the most exciting until this week – her first day at school. Katie will join her older sister Jem-

ma, 7, at Tahunanui School and thousands of other Nelson students this week as they wrap up their summer holiday and head back to the classroom. Primary schools welcome students

back on Thursday, while secondary schools start accepting students for the 2011 year today and Wednesday. Motorists have been urged to take extra care around schools, especially before and after school.

“It’s pretty exciting seeing all my old friends and new friends. It’ll be pretty scary meeting my new teacher but then it’ll be really exciting.”

whether to adopt the recommendation. Aldo says now is the time for Nelson to move forward, get heavy traffic off Rocks Rd and finally fix the city’s traffic problems. Although, moves to favour the Southern Link are certain to attract protests, especially from those in the Victory community, where the motorway is proposed to be built. “We need to protect our waterfront, it is an iconic piece of Nelson and we can’t keep pushing more and more traffic onto it,” says Aldo. Aldo says he is confident the cost of a new motorway won’t be left for Nelson ratepayers to fork out for. “Ideally the government will pay $1213 million and we have $18million in roading funding that could be released by NZTA.” The stage three report will be available from council this afternoon.

• Nelson celebrated its 169th anniversary yesterday. The day marks the date of the arrival of the first New Zealand Company boat, the Fifeshire, on 1 February, 1842. • Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says library members should be the priority in relation to all library policies, and is calling for a survey of members about the policy of free public internet use. Currently, the Nelson library offers free internet use to the public, which Aldo says is disadvantaging library members at certain times of the day when the computers are tied up by visitors to Nelson - despite recent changes to the computer booking system to favour library card holders. He says he plans to discuss this issue further with councillors and staff this week.

Flags fly for Anniversary Day On Nelson Anniversary Day 2000, Addo Mulders Snr was a proud man. He had chaired the committee which raised almost $100,000 to erect a statue at Tahunanui of the first European to see New Zealand, Abel Tasman. On January 31, 2000 the statue was officially unveiled by Nelson MP Nick Smith and each year since Addo has returned to signify the day. “Every year I come here and I put up two Nelson flags to commemorate our anniversary, but this year is special. This year it is January 31 again, the first time it has been that since the statue was unveiled.” Addo was down at the statue on Monday morning polishing the plaque and admiring the bronze artwork. Nelson City Council had arranged for it to be cleaned the week before and Addo says he was thrilled to see it in all its glory.] “Our anniversary day is special and it’s nice to be able to do something special on it. The flags look great.” Abel Tasman, a Dutch sailor, reached New Zealand in 1642 in Golden Bay. PERFECT SETTING: Nelson City Brass Band trombone player Adrian Laurence plays at the picturesque surroundings of Modellers’ Pond. Photo: Phillip Rollo. The Nelson City Brass band kicked off Brass on the Grass on Sunday with Modellers’ Pond the first port of call. The brass band will be performing a number of picnic mini-concerts throughout the summer in some of Nelson’s most beautiful parks and reserves. The first performance started on the weekend in Tahunanui near the Modellers’ Pond and then the barbecue area at the beach. While the sun didn’t come out, a crowd did and the music was a complementary backdrop to the busy trains. Next it’s off to Wakefield to the Faulkner Bush and Richmond’s Washbourn Gardens on February 20; Miyazu Gardens and Queen’s Gardens on March 6; finishing off at Isel Park later a week

later. Concerts start at 2:30pm and 4:30pm. Musical director Mick Dowrick say the miniconcerts were organised after a busy Christmas period which found the 2011 calendar empty for the brass band. After a conversation with both local councils he decided on spreading the performances throughout Nelson and Tasman in areas home to each of the band members. “We’ve sort of attracted a bit of a crowd and it’s a good chance for us to keep up the practice,” he says. With a range of music being performed, bring a picnic and listen to some relaxing brass band music in some wonderful settings. Gold coin donations appreciated.

Bikewise month rolls on in February Nelson’s cycle lanes may find themselves busier than normal this month as Bike Wise Month clicks into gear. February is Bike Wise Month and Nelson and Tasman residents are being encouraged to dust off their saddles for a series of biking events and promotions around the region. Funded by the NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health, Bike Wise Month is New Zealand’s annual celebration of the bicycle – invented nearly 200 years ago – and the health, environmental, social and financial benefits cycling uniquely offers. Nelson City Council encourages cycling not only by supporting Bike Wise month activities but also providing over 25 km of off road cycle ways, providing cycle lanes on many major roads and supporting Upcycle classes – aimed at giving new and returning cyclists better skills and confidence. This level of support for cycling from council has won it the

national Cycle Friendly Award on three previous occasions. Nelson City Council transport and road safety adviser Margaret Parfitt says Nelson is a fantastic place for cycling and the aim of Bike Wise Month is to encourage more people to give it a go. “Cycling is a fun, safe, healthy and environmentally-friendly form of transport that locals of all ages and abilities can enjoy,” she says. “It’s also an extremely cost effective way to get around – you’ll save on petrol, car maintenance and parking, and there’s no need for a gym membership.” A series of events are planned for Nelson and Tasman throughout Bike Wise Month. They include the annual Go By Bike Day on February 16, Bike Wise business challenge and mayoral Challenge rides in Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay. For full details go to www. bikewise.co.nz.

Sale helps library weed out old books Thousands of used library books will be up for sale this weekend as the Elma Turner Library weeds out some of its ageing stock. The sale will strongly feature biographies, cooking and gardening books but will have a selection of all sorts, and most are selling for only a dollar or two. Friends of the Library bumper summer book sale organiser Jill Blechynden, has spent hours sorting the books in preparation for the sale and says it is one of the biggest load of books to be “weeded out” by the library. “There is an extraordinary amount this year; we are even running out of storage space for them all.” Each year the library brings in around 15,000 new items and customer services librarian Andrea King says they need to make room. “Items need to have worth to keep their spot in the library. We are weeding out all the time because a library is more than a place to house books. It is a community space and we need to keep making room for those spaces.” Books that are sold tend to be one’s that the library has more than one copy of, or books that are outdated or haven’t been used in a while. Andrea says the library is very mindful of what it does take from its shelves. “Books about New Zealand rarely get sold and we are especially keen to hold onto books from our region.” The book sale is this Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 1pm. It is being held in the activity room at the library and all proceeds go to buying more stock for the library.

Buskers set to take over Nelson streets for festival The buskers are back. From the streets and squares of the world, the whacky, weird and unfathomably flexible buskers are on their way to Nelson for the annual Busker and Street Theatre Series. The series is part of the Summer in Nelson programme, organised by Nelson City Council. The name ‘Buskerburgoo’ was coined last year, derived from the porridge (burgoo) served on ships in Lord Nelson’s day, and event co-ordinators Adi Tait and Michaela Blackman say it’s descriptive of this year’s programme – which just like burgoo is an eclectic mixture with a few strange surprises. “We’ve got a whole range of acts so there will be something for everyone. It’s a wonderful event and we can’t wait for to get started again,” says Adi. The buskers will perform at the Top of Trafalgar St on Thursday and Friday this week from 11.30 - 3pm and on Saturday from 10am - 1.30pm. At the same time there will be roving theatre from locals and some out of town performers. The family friendly Buskers On Stage is at the Church Steps on Saturday, 5 February from 7pm and on the following day from 6pm, with food stalls so people can make a night out of it. Organisers urge you to bring chairs and cushions. The adult cabaret show When Buskers Go Bad is back at The Boathouse this year, on Thursday from 7.30pm and Friday at 8.30pm. “This cabaret show really works better indoors where people can sit down and enjoy some outrageous action as the buskers get ‘unleashed’,” says Adi. “Going by past year’s attendance we’d advise early bookings.” Tickets are $30 presale + $2 booking fee or $35 at the door. Book at Everyman 249 Hardy Street Ph 548 3083 or BALANCING ACT: Damara Sylvester aka La Rouge, is one of the locals that will be performing around the streets online www.everyman.co.nz. of Nelson during the Buskers Festival, which starts on Thursday. 10 TUESDAY 1 February 2011

Bands set to do battle Nelson’s top bands will be heading in to battle at the Belgrove Battle of the Bands on March 19. The competition is in its fourth year and gives local acts exposure, great prizes and a chance to play in front of a rocking crowd. There are a variety of categories that the prizes are issued to - including overall best act, best musician ship, best guitarist, best bass player and many more. The music kicks off at 11am at the Belgrove, south of Wakefield, and will conclude at 1am. Each band will perform a 30 minute set. Heavier acts will be allocated with later timeslots to suit the audience. Children are welcome, but everyone must be at least 18 years-old after 8pm. With the closure of the Phat Club, organiser Mark Patterson says community events like this are key for bands to get exposure. “At the end of the day it’s an opportunity for them to perform in front of a large crowd. It’s really hard to get exposure with music. It’s more of a chance to get out there and perform and compete for something,” he says. Presale tickets can be purchased in the next two weeks for $15 from the Belgrove, Bays Brewery, Marbecks, Beggs Music Works. Gate sales will be $20 while under 14 year-olds will get free entry. Bands interested in entering can call the Belgrove on 5418105. The competition is open to any band from Nelson and Tasman, and any age is welcome. Five bands have already entered in the competition with a limit of 13, so spaces are filling up fast.

WORKING TOGETHER: Builder Richard Cole, left, and construction project manager Don Robertson, right, with dental theripists; Wendy Shearer, Esther Ludemann and Kerry Angell with plans for the new Oral Health Community Dental Hub, which work begins on today. Photo: Andrew Board.

Work starts on oral health site The regions fifth Oral Health Community Dental Hub was blessed at a dawn ceremony this morning The first sod was also turned for the dental hub that will service 4500 children in the Nelson City area. The clinic is expected to be completed by the end of June, with equipment installed in July. This is the next step in a process that started in 2006 when consultation was carried out with an aim to provide a more modern Oral Health Service with access to modern equipment and facilities. There is also a change in focus for the service from treatment to prevention and education. This is the last of five new hub clinics to be built in the Nelson Marlborough

district. Other fixed hubs sites are at Parklands School in Motueka, Henley School in Richmond, Nayland Primary in Stoke, and beside Innes House in the grounds of Marlborough Girls’ College in Blenheim. District Manager Medicine, Child, Women and Oral Health, Pat Davidsen says it is an important step forward. “This is another exciting step on the journey to having a greater community focus for Oral Health and give greater colleagial support for oral health professionals.” The focus of the new clinics would be on prevention of oral health disease and education to improve the health status of our children, he says. Generally across the district current

School Dental facilities do not meet health standards and do not allow for introduction of modern care practices. This is largely due to older facilities that need to be upgraded and isolated professional practice. The Nelson clinic will have three dental chairs with a staff of eight which included an educator position. It will have X-ray facilities, new upto-date equipment, and electronic records. The new fixed clinics open early in 2011, the first of two mobile clinics for rural areas would be delivered June 2011 and the second in April 2012. The closure of school dental clinics will be staged as the new fixed clinics are completed.

Thanks to Caci Medispa Nelson you can make your permanent mistake not-so-permanent with tattoo removal. CACI Medispa Nelson is the only laser tattoo removal in the top of the South Island, the Medlite laser permanently removes tattoo ink with the energy of light. The light is delivered in short, high intensity pulses, resulting in maximum pigment destruction. The rapid absorption of light energy into the tattoo colour causes the tattoo ink to destruct. It is then removed by the body’s natural filtering system. This gradual elimination process can take up to six weeks after treatment. The number of treatments required depends on the amount and type of ink used and the depth of the ink in the skin. Caci’s registered nurses will consult with you regarding approximate number of treatments needed and the cost of your treatments. Caci also offer the Freedom Hair Removal Programme, this takes away the uncertainty and doubt of how long it will take. And once completed, they offer the Caci Freedom two year guarantee to treat any stray hair growth. For more information on what Caci has to offer give them a call on 0800 458 458.

14 TUESDAY 1 February 2011

Letters to the editor Dear Sir, On the 18 January 2011 you published a story by Alan Turley entitled Huria Matenga-The Grace Darling of New Zealand. This story is also recorded in the Wakatu Marae and is on two different Poupou (one by Ngati Tama and one by Ngati Koata). The Ngati Koata version of this story differs from the popular version which you have published. According to our tribal history it was Hohapeta Te Kahupuku who swam to the boat. Our historical recollection of the event is the same as the evidence presented to the Commission of inquiry into the Mates death. I refute the story as written by Alan Turley and suggest that the real hero of the rescue was Hohapeta Te Kahupuku. I believe the source that Alan Turley has used was from the book “Wrecks of New Zealand.” Unfortunately the

researchers did not appear to use reliable information (articles from the time or material from the Inquest inquiry on the death of the mate). Rather it appears they have used the popular story of the day which still continues to circulate misinformation. I would appreciate it if you could publish my comments in an effort to portray the correct set of events. Sincerely, A.M Hippolite, Research Officer-Ngati Koata Trust. Alan Turley replies: I have no argument with the points that Mr Hipolite makes. As he suggests, I based my story on the popular version that is part of our history. I have no reason to rewrite what is the commonly accepted historical version. I wish Mr Hippolite every success as he tries to rewrite history correctly.

The only change to her class is a pre-warning to new members that if they think she is getting bigger, it’s not that the class isn’t working, she is in fact pregnant. Valmai teaches Zumba on Monday nights at the Suburban Club and at the Golden Lodge bed and breakfast on Thursday nights. She has always had a love for dancing and music, so the combination of Zumba was something she jumped at. Valmai and her friends were involved in doing Zumba and it became a regular once a week thing, before more people started coming along and she took the role of instructing. “I’ve always loved dancing since I was young. I was just doing it for the fun of it. More people started hearing about it,” Valmai says. Valmai was two months into her pregnancy before she found out and immediately stopped Zumba and went to the doctor. But she was itching to get back on her feet and on the Zumba floor, and after being given the green light from her doctor, Valmai was back instructing. “If you’re already previously fit before you get pregnant then you should be fine. The doctor said just don’t do more of it.” Since carrying on with Zumba, Valmai has not felt any more strain and says it’s actually more fun. The baby has even picked up on the routine. “It stops moving and sits there. But as soon as I turn on the music I feel a few kicks.” She says she will stop when she feels uncomfortable, which she hopes she doesn’t. But otherwise she will only stop when she is in hospital giving birth and the first week of motherhood. Valmai encourages any other women, who are pregnant and being active, to have regular checkups with their doctor. Especially if they are not previously fit. The class has become much closer due to the pregnancy and have enjoyed watching the stages. “It’s like a little community we’ve got going on.” With her mother stressing that the pregnancy could occur in the middle of a Zumba lesson, Valmai is not nervous. WORKING OUT FOR TWO: Zumba instructor Valmai “You get to know the feeling of your body, and nothing Palatchie is still taking Zumba classes despite being six unusual has come up yet. If it does, you have to be responmonths pregnant, Photo: Phillip Rollo. sible and stop.”

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) is underway on a significant restructure, intended to improve support for frontline clinical activities, it announced last week. The proposed reorganisation comes from the recent executive leadership team restructure as well as from measures highlighted in recent draft Rutherford Initiative reports. Nelson Marlborough DHB staff can make submissions on a range of recommended changes. Chief executive, John Peters says the proposed changes represent a significant restructure for the way the DHB functions and affect a large number of staff. He says he will consider staff feedback before decisions are made. “I would like to thank all staff for their continued professionalism during this time of change, which in some cases started with the redevelopment of the leadership team last year. “These proposals outline the way these directorates of surgical medical, clinical services support, community based services, and Marlborough Services will be resourced and managed to improve their ability to support front line clinical activities. The process incorporated Rutherford Initiative where it made sense to do so. “The proposals aim to make operational reporting lines clearer and clarify roles and responsibilities giving the service directors and general managers the opportunity to work more strategically.” The Rutherford Initiative began 18 months ago in response to the changing economic climate. The name of the initiative comes from the Lord Rutherford quote: “We haven’t got the money, so we’ve got to think”. Under the initiative, staff, external experts and management are brought together to find smarter ways of working to find $20m worth of savings and efficiencies from annual revenue of $391m. This is the level of savings necessary for the DHB to break even in 2012/13 financial year. The DHB has already identified $7m in savings.

Stoke/Nayland on top after solid win over Waimea Phillip Rollo

Two Nelson In-line Hockey players have been selected to play for New Zealand in Australia and the United States this year. Josh Stove, 14, and Tessa Nicholas, 15, above, have both impressed national coaches enough to represent their country this year. This is the second year Josh has made the NZ under 14 team but the first call up for Tessa, a goalie, to the NZ junior woman team. The Nelson duo will head to the Gold Coast in April to defend the Asia, Pacific

and Oceania titles that both their teams hold and then to Los Angles for the WAU Junior Olympics. For Josh especially it is the beginning of a long-time goal to earn a college scholarship and play in the US. While busy training, the players are also trying to raise the $7000 needed by each for the two trips. They are trying to find sponsorship in between sausage sizzles. If you are keen to hear more about their sponsorship package, give Alethea Stove a call on 027 233 3222. Photo: Andrew Board.

Another century to Mark Douglas saw Stoke/Nayland remain unbeaten after its round two victory over Waimea College at Marsden Rec on Saturday. Mark’s 102, in blustery conditions, saved a middle order collapse when youngsters Ben Gully and Mitchell Drummond fell cheaply around him in the Car Company Nelson Cricket one-day competition, which started in the new year. Peter Younghusband entered the fray with Tom Ingham sitting on a hat-trick ball in the 21st over. But Peter flourished under the pressure as he played a cool supporting role for Mark, with the pair reaching a 130-run partnership. Peter finished the innings 60 notout to give Car Company Stoke/

Nayland a score of 279/7. And it was Peter who featured strongly again in the second innings. The legspinner picked up four key wickets to seal full points for Stoke/Nayland after they bowled Waimea out for just 223 runs. Elsewhere, Wakatu slumped to a defeat at Victory Square. Chasing Waimea Toi Toi United’s 204, Wakatu were sitting comfortably at 150 for four but crumbled with victory in sight. They were all out for just over 180. Cricket action continues with the Kelvin Scoble trophy this weekend. The top three Nelson teams mix it up with the top to from Marlborough. The three Nelson teams to qualifly for the trophy are Stoke/Nayland, Wakatu and Waimea Toi Toi United.

Places filling fast for triathlons April seems a long way off for the Taylors Nelson Women’s Triathlon but the long standing annual event is always a sell out with its maximum of 500 lining up at Branford Park each year. Numbers are closing in on 200 already and to entice everyone to register early all entrants signed up for the start line by February 6 go into the EarlyBird Draw of a $150 voucher at Relish Waterfront Dining plus their entry fee refunded. The same prize is also on offer

for the 7th Port Nelson Blokes Day Out Men’s Triathlon happening a week earlier on April 3. Also planned for that afternoon is the Port Nelson Kauri Kids Aquathon. All events can be combined with each other in the Nelson Insurance Brokers Generation Challenges setting the whole family an achievable goal to get involved with their respective event. Training programmes will be released next week on www. nelsonevents.co.nz where online entry can also be made.

Closing in on capacity as well is Nelson Events next trail run on April 16 with the 25km circuit around Lake Rotoiti in the annual Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake with less than 100 places left. Fitness requirement is being able to comfortably complete a half marathon in 2hours 45 minutes and for most this is within their ability. If not they are welcomed to join the NBS Nelson Striders on their weekly runs or walks to build up to the necessary standard. Kite surfers flying high Andrew Board Nelson kite surfers are enjoying a breezy summer and the favourable conditions are seeing them multiply, as more people take up the sport. There are around 100 regular local kite surfers that make their way to Tahunanui beach on windy days and this summer has had more wind than last year, meaning more kites in the sky. The city’s two kite school owners say they have been kept off their feet teaching new people the sport. Kite Surf Nelson owner Shane Anderson says he has been busy with locals over the summer. “Last year we had a lot of tourists but this year it has been a big swing towards locals which is cool. A lot of people see the kites in the sky and want to give it a go.” Kitescool owner Warren Mitchell has a similar feeling, saying the sport continues to grow each year. “It’s definitely a growing sport and especially in Nelson, because it is the best spot in the country for it by far.” Kite surfing seems to be a sport for all ages and abilities as well with the oldest kite surfer in Nelson aged 69 and the youngest, nine. Local kite surfer Grant Ruthven says he can see why the sport is becoming so popular in Nelson. He makes his way to the beach at least three times a week and says it’s the perfect activity in so many ways. “I came to Nelson about three years ago and that’s when I first got into it. I saw people doing it at Tahuna and had just come off a snowboarding season in Canada so thought I’d give it a go. “It’s a good work out and the kite surfing community is great, it was a great way for me to make new friends here as well,” he says. Grant says he was hooked on the sport after just one lesson. “Learning to handle the kite was the hardest for me but after that first lesson it was cool to feel the power in the kite and I just wanted to learn more. So that night I bought my first kite, it’s been awesome.” All three say Nelson is one of the best kite surfing beaches in the country because of its safe rock free-waters and steady sea breeze. Warren says kite surfing is becoming so synonymous with Nelson that it is even appearing in local art work. “Lots of people are talking about it and it is a real attraction for Nelson.”

IN BRIEF ShooTing Five members of the Cable Bay Pistol Club are travelling to nationals this weekend at the Otago Pistol Club in Patearoa. Bruce Harvey, Ross Seddon, Nigel Rout, Danny Hill and Brian Bishop are off to the three-day event where Bruce is hoping to regain the open title that he let slip last year. With the top four places from last year there it will be a good match. rUgbY It is understood Nelson College has secured the services of New Zealand Secondary School representative and former Waimea College flanker, Steve Soper. Steve played for the Waimea College 1st XV for the past two seasons, either on the side of the scrum or in the backline but has decided to play his last Press Cup season with the former champions, Nelson. FooTbAll Gagame Feni had a busy match for Canterbury United in their 2-1 win over Hawke’s Bay United last weekend. Handed another start, Gagame spent most of the match ghosting past opposition defenders with his silky footwork. And on one occasion he beat three men in the box. Although he showcased his footwork, a key finishing touch was the only ingredient missing for the striker. Gagame played a full 90 minutes. cYcling The hardy group of competitive track cyclists kept the handicapper, Rex Clinton and starter Ralph Greenfield, on their toes on Wednesday night’s close track racing for the second week in the Track Cycling $500 Series. Young fliers Callum Greenfield and Jacob Anderson jostled all evening for various places whilst Ann and Peter Rigg took great advantage of their good handicaps to score some well deserved places. Steve Gundry was always breathing down the other rider’s necks with some powerful finishes but just a whisker out of the major placings.

Nelson want cup back

EXPLOSIVE: Nelson star Andrew Moore in action during a local meet. Andrew has been one of the regions top performers in the Mahar Cup over the years. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Athletics Nelson want the Mahar Cup back where it belongs, after losing it to West Coast last year. The Nelson club will be hosting the 75th edition of the competition between Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast this Saturday, and are focussed on bringing back the cup they lost last year for the first time in 12 years. The cup has come under scrutiny in the past few years due to rewarding points for participation as well as victory. And as numbers of competing athletes has decreased, participation has heavily influenced the winning club. Athletics Nelson head-coach Greg Lautenslager is confident his athletes can dominate on their home turf. “I think we will recapture the cup, but it will depend on the team and how many athletes come out and compete. So it’s really up to them. I want the Cup back, but how bad to the athletes want it back?” he says. Hazel Bowering-Scott will be one of the Nelson athletes to watch. Likely to compete in a selection of the 100m, 200m and 400m, Hazel is capable of setting Mahar Cup records in all three disciplines. Shot-putter Dale Pritchard will be another targeting the record books while the 1500m should be very competitive with Nelson’s Matt Lambert and Craig Lautenslager going up against West Coast star Josh Komen. The Mahar Cup begins on Saturday at 9:50am with the women’s hurdles.

NEEDS GAME TIME: Goal keeper Coey Turipa on the bench for Canterbury Utd in its recent game at Trafalgar Park. He is moving to Australia to get more game time. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

OVER THE NET: Sarah Baldwin from Nelson compete in the Slammin in Tasman beach volleyball tour at Brightwater over the weekend. Her team was one of four female teams to enter the competition, which also stopped off at Kaiteriteri and Rabbit Island over the long weekend. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Coey Turipa is heading over to Australia hoping to kickstart his footballing career. The former Nayland College goalkeeper has signed with Brisbane Premier League side Redlands United after struggling to break in to the Canterbury United starting eleven. The former New Zealand under-17 representative has failed to progress in New Zealand football after a stellar FIFA World Cup Nigeria campaign, training regularly with the Wellington Phoenix and being a star for Nayland College. He moved to Wellington last year to play for Central Premier League side Miramar Rangers, but moved back to Nelson when Suburbs’ shot-stopper Eddie Newman departed. But he now hopes the recent move will get him noticed in the Australian system so he can crack A-League heavyweights Brisbane Roar’s youth team. Coey will head over to Cleveland, Brisbane on February 4 and he will join former Miramar teammate Michael Eagar at Redlands. Michael was a key figure in helping Coey pick up a contract in Australia. The club will pay for his accommodation in an apartment with two other teammates, as well as helping Coey find employment. Coey says he was disappointed not to get an opportunity with Canterbury United after he finished the ASB Youth League season in second place. But he had to be realistic in his first year of national league football. “I was training as hard as I could down in Christchurch but couldn’t manage to get a game. I wasn’t expecting to start for Canterbury United at the start of the season because I was just new to NZFC. But it was hard to sit on the bench every game because you know you will only get on if the keeper gets injured, and that hardly happens,” Coey says. Coey’s goal to impress with his new club, try make the Brisbane Roar and push on from there. “This is an excellent opportunity that I couldn’t say no to.”
