‘It’s the least we can do’ Mayors back drive to open accommodation for quake survivors

The Christchurch earthquake has devastated a city so closely linked with our own and now it’s time for Nelsonians to help, say the regions two mayors. Already dozens of businesses, groups, schools and regular Nelsonians have dug deep to support the cause with donations and fundraisers, and today the city is due to come to a standstill as people observe a two minute silence at 12.51pm, the time of the earthquake one week ago. Nelson has sent teams of emergency workers to Christchurch to help find survivors and recover bodies. Nelson City Council has also opened its camping grounds to Cantabrians seeking refuge from the aftershocks and damage to the garden city. And today Nelson Weekly jumps on board to do its bit. Plenty of people are offering houses and baches on TradeMe and Facebook and a new initiative, Quake Break, aims to do it in an easy and effective way says Weekly publisher Steve Page. “Folk are hurting and we need to do what we can to help. This is a way that will give people a chance to relax and de-stress in our beautiful region before returning to rebuild their city. “On our website, www.nelsonweekly.co.nz, is a simple link to fill in for Nelson and Tasman people who have a house to lend, free of charge to people needing a rest from Christchurch.” Quake Break is being run in conjunction with Radio Network, a Christchurch Newspaper, Richmond Mall and Nelson Weekly. Aldo and Richard say they are proud to see the way the region has responded to the crisis and both OPEN FOR CANTABS: Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, left, and Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne say they support councils will continue to help its southern neigh- Nelsonians opening their homes, baches and whatever else they have to offer, to earthquake-stricken Cantabrians over the coming months. “Money really. Because if you can donate money then it can be channelled in to areas that need resources. Every penny, every cent counts.”

“All the banks and supermarkets that are taking donations is helpful. It all adds up and hopefully it gets that infrastructure rebuilt and helps families out.”

“Volunteering is great, but they’ve got enough people down there already. So just thinking about people and just being there for them.”

“All we can do is give donations. I think they just really need money and perhaps supplies really.”

Performing arts centre another step closer

An Air force C120 unloads patients from the Christchurch earthquake at Nelson Airport yesterday. It was the third time it has been at the airport with patients transferred to Nelson Hospital.

Nelson City Council took another step towards a performing arts centre, last week including it in its draft annual plan. The proposal will see a conference centre and a performing arts centre built at Rutherford Park with a total budget of $58 million. If the proposed project goes ahead it will be done in stages over the next four years. The first step is the development of concept plans and costings and an integrated plan for Rutherford Park this financial year. If council decides to proceed following the draft annual plan process, detailed design work and the subsequent consent processes would come next with construction beginning in the 2012/13 financial year. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says council needs to be bold and decisive. “We’ll be listening to the feedback we get from the community on this very topical issue and making the best decision we can.” The project, which if adopted after the annual plan consultation with the community, includes; the development for Rutherford Park and the surrounding area including preliminary concept plans for the Trafalgar Centre northern upgrade works, and integrated conference facilities and a performing arts centre.

A BUCKET TOTALLY FULL: Nelson City Council staff Chloe Light, Eleanor Rounce and Viv Rounce collect money for Red Cross at the Opera in the Park. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Opera brings joy to 8000 fans Another stellar Opera in the Park thrilled 8000 fans on Saturday night, while Red Cross collectors were just as thrilled, collecting $15,000 for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. The gratitude did not just come from the collectors either with tears flowing from Christchurch guests in the audience who were offered free tickets by Nelson City Council while taking refuge in Nelson. Red Cross member Bob Askew organised a bucket collection for the earthquake appeal and says there was so much money it has not all been counted – but he estimates the final tally at $15,000. “The giving was unprecedented at any public event I’ve been involved with. Collectors were blown away by people’s generosity – a lot of

people gave $50 and $100 notes.” The Topp Twins welcomed the Canterbury guests to the show and told them the rest of New Zealand would be with them – not just now, but for the rest of their lives. The other stars at Opera in the Park were tenor Ben Makisi, lyric soprano Aivale Cole, soprano Xing Xing, folk duo Lipscombe and Swan, soul singer Bella Kalolo, and the Vector Wellington Orchestra under Marc Taddei. Special guest Simon O’Neill, fresh from La Scala and Carnegie Hall, says Nelson Opera in the Park should go on tour. “This is a great show – when you have variety that is really well done it is unbeatable. Nelson has honestly got a recipe here for a great night out.”

COLURFUL KIDS: Hampden St School deputy principal Rachel Rae with students Sam, Milan, Ari, Alex, Ben, Hannah, Emma, Rosie, Aria, Samantha and Lola celebrating Purple Cake Day, today. Photo: Andrew Board.

Purple Cake Day will take on added significance today with some of the proceeds to help Christchurch children in need after last week’s earthquake. Haiti earthquake survivor Emily Sanson-Rejouis has pledged to double the efforts for the inaugural Purple Cake Day and offered proceeds to help children in need in Christchurch, as well as children in Haiti. Emily lost her husband Emmanuel and two daughters, Kofie-Jade, 5, and Zenzie, 3, in the Haiti earthquake on January 12, 2010. Following the earthquake, Emily established the Kenbe La Foundation (‘Kenbe La’ means “Never Give Up” in Haitian Creole), a registered charitable trust, to provide educational opportunities for children in need. The Foundation has since established Purple Cake Day; a specific day to set aside each year to celebrate children and empower them to help children in need worldwide. “In Nelson, we are in shock about Christchurch, like so many people around the country,” says Emily. “For me particularly it is ‘deja vu’ as it has brought back the sounds, smells and flashbacks from my experience in Haiti. The disaster yesterday creates a parallel in so many ways between my direct connection to children in Haiti and now children in Christchurch. “The focus of Purple Cake Day fundraising this year was nominated originally as Haiti but we have a calamity on our doorstep and it is natural to want to respond to that also where we can. I think more than ever Purple Cake Day is relevant to motivate even the youngest members of our community to get out there and do what they can for others in need. It can be a positive tool to direct support to the children in Christchurch affected by the earthquake.” Emily was this morning due to help kick off celebrations for Purple Cake Day at her old school, Hampden St. Hundreds of schools around New Zealand are participating in the day and in Nelson school children are writing messages of support and flags of hope to send to kids in Christchurch. Meanwhile, in the heart of downtown Nelson there are more than 60 businesses getting staff to wear purple, dressing shop windows in purple, planning to bake and sell cupcakes, and displaying donation boxes.

24 tonne of Nelson water sent to Chch More Nelson businesses chip in for earthquake relief Andrew Board

While Nelson people open their homes, wallets and hearts to the people of Christchurch, our city’s businesses are also doing their bit to help. Enza Foods, based in Stoke, joined forces with Sealed Air to send 24 tonnes of drinking water to those in need in earthquake-ravished Christchurch. The water was pasteurised and sealed in 3kg plastic bags by volunteer staff on Saturday and made its way to Christchurch on Monday. Radio station Classic Hits is helping distribute the water to needy Cantabrains. Enza factory manager Alan Warne says staff were happy to volunteer their time to help pack the water. “I think everybody is shocked about the earthquake and by volunteering we feel that at least we can do something. If it goes well and there’s a need we can do another run. Dozens of Nelson businesses and groups have moved to help support victims of last weeks horrific earthquake in Christchuch. Emails to the Nelson Weekly inbox have been flooding in since last Friday and include Riverside Pool which is donating its entire proceeds from all of its Aqua Fitness classes for this week; Soundstage, which is offering free lessons to Christchurch children staying in Nelson; PBT Transport are collecting food and water to deliver to Christchurch; Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, which is hosting a concert with all proceeds going to the relief fund and many more, including Quake Break, organised by Nelson Weekly and in conjuction with the Radio Network, Richmond Mall and APN Newspapers. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio told Nelson Weekly yesterday it was heart-warming to live in a city which is proving itself to be a supportive neighbour.

Museum exhibition welcomes 10,000th visitor The Nelson Provincial Museum welcomed the 10,000th visitor to its Port Nelson Haven Ahoy exhibition on Sunday. And this weekend it is preparing to open it to more folk for free to celebrate 140 days since it opened – the same time it took to travel from England to Nelson on the Clifford. At 10.15am this Saturday 5 March, to mark the end of the voyage, the Museum has arranged for a 45 foot sailing vessel called the Steadfast to sail into the harbour and arrive at Wakefield Quay. Members of the Nelson Yacht Club are intending to be out in force to meet them. On board the Steadfast will be a family representing all those brave families that migrated from England. They will be met at Wakefield Quay and may travel to the Museum by horse and cart. To celebrate, entry to Port Nelson Haven Ahoy will be free for the day. Those families who attend the arrival of the Steadfast will be

Three year-old Ryan Thelien slides down the slide at the opening of a new playground at Rutherford St Kindergarten. Photo: Phillip Rollo. A brand-spanking new deck and playground were opened at the Rutherford St Kindergarten on Friday, much to the delight of the children. With both deck and playground needing an upgrade, new senior teacher Mary Davies says it “refreshes” the whole centre. The deck will be a busy spot for the children with mat time, lunch time, puzzles, board games, a vegetable garden and other activities all being held on the new structure. But the new playground has been the biggest hit with the children. “Oh yeah totally. They’ve been on it non-stop,” she says. Parents helped fundraise towards the upgrade with one cello player in particular holding a concert at Deville’s to raise some money to improve the previously aging structure. On Friday they had a special opening for the two new features with the deck given a special Maori blessing. Children, along with their parents were also greeeted with a shared lunch, once they hopped off the playground.

given a free open family ticket to use at any time up to 17 April. The celebration comes on the back of the strong visitor numbers going through the exhibition says an excited chief executive Peter Millward. “It was the second to last visitor on Sunday afternoon and that’s 10,000 since it opened on 4 October last year. Nearly 3500 regional school students will have visited the exhibition when it closes on 17 April. This is a fantastic response and is probably close to one in three of the region’s primary aged children.” As the closing date of the exhibition gets closer the Museum wants to encourage as many regional children to enjoy the exhibition as possible. This is a unique opportunity to gain some understanding about early life in the region. Lots of people have commented that they will never again complain about a 10 hour plane flight, let alone a 4 hour ferry trip, says Peter.

Hundreds of classic cars will be on show this weekend, replacing the traditional parade around Nelson as organisers aim to scale-back the popular show. The Nelson Classic Motoring Society will host its annual show at Richmond’s A&P showground’s with more than 200 cars expected. Spectators are encouraged to come along, check out the cars and chat with the owners. It is the eleventh year the society has hosted the show, with previous years seeing a parade go through the streets of Nelson

and Richmond. But this year orgainsers decided it was easier to host it in one place. Cars from Motueka and Blenheim will join Nelson club members, but club president Geoff Chilton says the show is not just for club cars. “If anyone in Nelson has an unusal car they are more-than-welcome to come along.” The show is open to the public from 3 to 6pm on Sunday March 6. Entry is a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Hospice.

Nelson man navigates using only stars, sun and moon Andrew Board

will be hoping to catch fish to add some fresh food to their rice, Weetbix and dried meat diet. The journey will be documented by film-makers, celebrating a skill that was almost lost. In 1975 a group of Hawaiians sailed to New Zealand using it, sparking inter-

est in the dying art. Since then several Pacific nations have studied it, including New Zealand. Mani, a legal compliance manager at Sealord, says learning it has not been easy. “I’ve been studying over the past ten years and it’s a constant struggle to remember it all. Just the little things like at what degree that star will rise at, that sort of stuff is crucial. If it’s a cloudy night and you can only see one or two stars you need to be familiar with them to get your bearings from it, so you need to know about all of the stars.” The crew is made up of two navigators, a captain with the rest workers on the 80 foot canoe. The crew will rotate shifts so the boat is operated nonstop. Mani says it will be a great feeling when the boat finally makes it to Hawaii. “It is crazy when you look up and you can picture that people 1000 years ago were using the same technique. But the big buzz will come when we see land, it will be the greatest feeling.” Although the five boats will travel together, Mani isn’t anticipating seeing much of the others as they try to race each other to Hawaii. But he is under no illusions about how serious the voyage is. “Without a doubt the hardest part will be selfdoubt because you have people’s lives in your hands so it’s quite a lot of pressure and really fullon.” Mani is also raising money and awareness for Starship while doing the voyage. For more information or to donate visit www.fundraiseonline. co.nz/starnavigation/.

Looking up at the stars at night is a serious business for Nelson man Mani Forbes. He doesn’t just see the solar system, he sees a map and it’s the only map he will be using to navigate a team of sailors from Auckland to Hawaii this winter. Mani has been learning celestial navigating for the past decade, a technique used by Polynesian sailors and believed to be used by Maori when they first arrived in New Zealand. Mani will put his years of study to good use, navigating a boat with 16 crew to Hawaii. If successful he will become only the fourth New Zealander to be a qualified pure celestial navigator. Celestial navigation means sailors use no modern equipment, including GPS, watches, compass or even maps. They find their way by watching the stars, sun, moon and can figure out where they are by seeing what birds are around and what they do. “We learn that so if we see a particular type of bird and it is going in one direction at a certain time of day we know what area we are in,” says Mani. The ten week voyage, due to start in August, will make one stop at Tahiti and will involve five vessels from three South Pacific nations, including two from New Zealand and one each from Samoa, Cook Islands and Tahiti. Mani says he has had several trips already using the technique, including a return trip to Norfolk Island and several around the top of the North Island, but this voyage is an entirely different proposition. “It’s a huge challenge, because the canoe isn’t modern we won’t have a fridge that you can just walk to and get a cold drink, little things like that will be difficult. It’s usually the men- STAR POWER: Nelson man Mani Forbes is navigating a canoe from Auckland to Hawaii using only the stars, sun and moon for guidence. He will tal challenge that is the hardest. “ Each crew member will have a ration of one be only the fourth celestial navigator in NZ when finished. Wetlands success exciting for Nelson, say experts Andrew Board A project to restore pockets of land around the Glen to its original wetlands is being hailed as a tremendous success. Wetlands – or swamps – were prominent in Nelson before they were filled in with the arrival of European settlers but a Nelson City Council project has reversed the demise and in the process saved a plant native to the region. The plan to create wetlands at the Glen started in 2009 when council decided to do something different and save a piece of the region’s history, says Robert Fryer of Nelmac. “It was a bold move by the council and a very important one. It’s extremely exciting for Nelson.” In the process of creating a shallow pond, Nelmac have planted 9000 plants on the edge that will eventually migrate into the pond and create a wetland area. Residents of the Glen appear to be right in behind the project as well, with more than 100 volunteers turning up to help plant the vegetation. The area has thrived since it was planted a year ago and one of the plants that are doing particular-

ly well is lucky to even still exist. Baumea articulata was a plant native to Nelson that was all-but extinct, it loves wetland areas and is now thriving in its new home. Staff at Nelmac found a few remaining plants on Rough Island and propagated them at its nursery. Robert says the project is one of the most satisfying he has ever worked on. “It’s not every day you get the opportunity to work on a project like this and seeing it come through and really thrive is really rewarding. In a few years this area will be a selfsustaining eco-system.” The area at the Glen will be neighboured by a playground and recreation space and Robert says the wetlands will grow and return to how a lot of Nelson was. “We’ve lost our wetlands around Nelson so it’s really cool to be involved in recreating them.” The project is something that has not been tried before in Nelson says a Nelmac team leader Richard Hilton. “It’s pretty rare to be able to do what we’ve done, but the plants are thriving because they are meant to be here.” The wetlands should be self-sufficient in five years time.

RETURNED TO NATURAL STATE: Nelmac’s Richard Hilton and horticultural parks and reserve operations manager Robert Fryer at the Glen with the recently developed wetland and the Baumea articulata, a native plant to Nelson, saved by the project. Photo: Andrew Board.

Secondary school students get down to business Business studies students were thrown in to the lion’s den last week when they had to create a hypothetical product judged and critiqued by the region’s top businessmen and women. Business studies students from Nayland College, Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls all took part in the three-day BusinessNZ Challenge at Nayland. Students were divided into ten teams of eight and using the latest business theory, create a hypothetical product, set up a

company and prepare a business strategy to produce and BusinessNZ Challenge the product. On the final day each team’s business ideas, creations and discoveries went on display at a business expo where students had to try win over each judge with a business presentation that usually included a bowl full of candy as a sweetener. Products and ideas ranged from an iPod application that replaces workbooks at school, tooth brushes

shaped like a mouthguard, even an umbrella for a bike. It is an intensive, positive, business experience, and for most students it is the first time they have encountered such experiential learning. Pearly Whites finished the week as the top corporation, followed by iBag and Plugs, a wireless headphone idea, was third. Nayland College business studies teacher Murray King says Pearly Whites

were head and shoulders above the rest of the groups. “They stood out because they were very professional. Their presentation, the judges commented on that as well.” All the students worked well together during the challenge despite only meeting on the day. He credited the professionalism that the Nelson College students showed. “The Boys College boys, they did their school really proud.”

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• Five container ships, six large fishing vessels, several small vessels, a tanker, a log ship, and a Super Yacht all kept the port operators busy over the past week. • The harbour master staff were kept busy at well with speed being a constant issue around the port. I had occasion to talk to a couple of men in a small run about that were wakeboarding too close to shore and not carrying an observer. • Instead of the appropriate fines (approximately $400 worth) they agreed to do the right thing in the future and wakeboard in the appropriate zones. • The Police have been involved in some rescues this week. My understanding is that there are now 5 more citizens grateful to be alive after being washed away from their kayaks, rafts or lifejackets as they were caught out by the weather in various incidents, well done Police and Nel-

son Surf Rescue. • Perhaps it is worth noting that all Maritime Incidents are now being reported to this office and it is my duty to report them on to Maritime New Zealand. Maritime New Zealand may then investigate and prosecute if they see it as appropriate. • Many of the incidents this summer were avoidable. Fatalities have been avoided by luck, excellent work from the Police and Surf Rescue, and by other boaties putting themselves at risk to effect a rescue. Many thanks to you all Please always check the weather, check your vessel is fit for the conditions If in doubt- don’t go out.

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Simon and Jodie Bixley are the proud owners of Signature Homes Nelson. The couple have been operating in Richmond for just over a year, having bought the Signature franchise after a very successful stint managing another major building franchise in the area. Jodie and Simon have now lived in the Nelson area for the past four years, and they are really enjoying raising there family here. The couple are raising their three children in the area, Gus, 3, Will, 7, and Jade, 9. “We love the people here, and we can’t think of anywhere else we would rather live”, says Jodie. we took parts of a standard plan and came up with a design that captured all our personal needs. “During Construction we were communicated with extremely well with numerous calls weekly. Dylan (project manager) was very well organised, due to this and the willingness of all the Signature contractors to go the extra mile we were able to move into our house approximately 4 weeks earlier than we first anticipated. “We have been through a number of Signatures competitor’s homes and we can openly say that our home has the best finish of them all; the painters have taken great care and done a fantastic job along with all others involved in our home. “We are over the moon with our new home and have no hesitation in recommending Simon and the team to anyone who wishes to build. Everything we asked for we got and everything Signature said they would do, they did. Thank you very much.” The aim of Signature Homes is to provide a top quality job for their clients. “We love keeping them happy and being able to build lovely homes for them,” says Simon. The process of building a home can often be perceived as tricky. However, at Signature Homes they aim to make it as stress-free as possible. “We want to find out what their needs are and really concentrate on what they’re looking for,” says Simon. Signature Homes also provide New Zealand’s most extensive guarantee programme, which is exclusive to Signature Homes. It is very thorough in protecting clients from things such as budget blowouts. “We make sure we don’t go over their budget – when our clients say to us ‘we’ve got this amount to spend’, that’s what we stick to. “Sometimes this can be tricky, because there are unknowns out there with earthworks and

engineers and things like that, so we have to do a very thorough investigation initially to get all that right and keep to that budget,” says Simon. Giving their client what they want is the number one priority for Simon, Jodie and the rest of the Signature Homes team. “We tend to look at their lifestyle, how they live, and things like whether they are big entertainers or not,” says Simon. Where a client has special requirements, it can mean that the best course of action is to go down the design and build road to create something unique. However, Simon says that the company has recently launched new range of pre-priced and highly cost-effective standard plans, which can also be adapted to suit their client’s preferences. “These have all been specifically engineered and designed to make sure that the home is very economical to build, but they still get the protection, guarantees and reputation that Signature Homes offer - there is no difference in build quality in our cost effective homes, than in our design and build homes,” says Simon. Signature Homes believe they are a very client-driven business. “We really focus on what they want; it’s not about us, it’s about the client, and it’s

about the folks that are carrying out the work. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have a very good business because you to have reliable and reputable people at the coalface,” says Simon. Jodie and Simon believe the perception of Signature Homes has changed since they purchased the franchise a year ago. “When we first purchased the franchise the perception of a Signature Home was the upper middle and upper end of the scale, but the fact is they are very affordable homes that first home buyers and those on a modest budget can also afford. It’s not unaffordable to build your own home through Signature Homes,” says Simon. First time buyers can be re-assured that with Signature Homes, you will be looked after. “It can be quite daunting; it’s a lot of money that people

are handing over, but we want to make sure they understand what is happening and be a part of it, because it is really exciting, and it should be an experience they remember for all the right reasons”, says Simon. Signature Homes also have a very unique system to follow through with the construction of a home. “Right from the very first time we meet with a client; all communications are entered into our online database. There are literally hundreds of steps that we have to follow to ensure that every single box is ticked and that due care is taken. This makes sure the project flows smoothly, from the moment you walk in to our showroom or show home, right up until maintenance procedures are performed years after we hand over the home to you. The system streamlines all of the design, pricing, ordering and construction processes.” Handing over the keys of a completed home is very satisfying for the couple. “It’s quite a special feeling,” says Jodie. “Handing over the Bradley’s home was fantastic and the comments they were making were great. Adrian was saying that he’d been through a number of our competitors’ homes recently and none of them were finished to the same standard as this one which was very pleasing to hear. We thank all of our people for that, the people that have actually done the work because it gives us faith in what we’re doing,” says Simon.

Nelson man Stefan Herbst has thought of one active way to support earthquake victims in Christchurch, organising a social football tournament. Stefan, who works for Opus, decided he wanted to help and the idea of a tournament, where people can have a bit of fun and still donate to a worthy cause, appealed. “What happened was just so awful and I know a lot of businesses out there would be keen to form a social team and have a bit of a kick around while raising money for the Red Cross earthquake appeal,” he says. The six-a-side tournament will be held at Saxton Field and Stefan already has a few teams confirmed, with Sport Tasman helping run it. The, as yet unnamed, tournament will be held on Sunday 13 March from 9.30am. Team registration is $250 with every cent going towards the relief fund. “Each team will get several games and we will have a barbeque and try to make a great day of it.” While business-house teams have already signed up to play, Stefan is not ruling out any team who would like to take part, including family and social teams. Adrenaline junkie off to Belgium as riding cycle continues to flourish Teresa Hattan Tom Delany is addicted to adrenaline. The rush he gets from cycle racing is what drives the 18 year-old to compete at the highest level he can. Tom says cycling is his passion and he wants to go as far as he possibly can. So when the opportunity to compete in Belgium came knocking, the ex Nayland College student jumped at the chance. Tom leaves in three weeks and says he is starting off in the amateur scene in Ghent, a city in Belgium. The Appleby resident has been involved in competitive cycling in New Zealand for the past five years and is training hard ahead of his next big step. “At the moment I’m putting in mega time on the bike before I head over there.” Being overseas for seven months, the duration of New Zealand’s cycling off-season, will give Tom the opportunity to train for coming events here. “I’ll be back home to race the tour of Southland.” Tom says the best part about cycling is the adrenaline you get in a race. “The feeling you get is like nothing else.” Cycling is certainly a competitive sport for those like Tom who are serious about it. “It’s all about trying to cross that line first and beating everyone else.” Tom says he doesn’t have a preference between team or individual sports, but says cycling is

certainly a team sport. “I’m racing in a team over there so we’re all helping each other out trying to win the kermese, which is a type of race over there.” The trip to Belgium came about after Tom got in touch with Nathan Dahlberg, a former Tour de France rider. “He knows the guys over there and he’s basically coordinated it. I’m racing for a team that’s called Don Fredo, an under 23 team. “I’m going there to start as an amateur and then try and work my way up to be professional, that’s what I really want to do.” Eventually Tom wants to compete in the most well-known cycle tour, the Tour de France. “That’s my big goal.” Last year the teenager was selected to represent New Zealand in Australia. He was racing in Canberra and placed eighth overall and first equal in the KOM [King of Mountain] classification. Tom also placed eighth overall at the Tour de Vineyards. Tom says he will be working on strength and endurance in Belgium. “I’m going to be doing lots and lots of hard races, hopefully up to about three times a week of racing so it’s going to be real good.” Belgium is the centre of cycle racing according to Tom. “That’s where it’s at. They have major big races there and it’s where everyone goes so I’m really looking forward to that.” Tom says he appreciates the help and support offered by Avanti Plus and the Tasman Wheelers.
