Study into Southern Link due

The NZTA study into the road dubbed the Southern Link could be announced within the next few weeks, but councillors and NZTA are remaining tight-lipped, refusing to comment to media. NZTA said earlier this year that the study into the highlycontroversial road could be finished before Christmas. The study was initiated by the government after a Nelson City Council study in 2010 found that traffic flows didn’t justify a new arterial route. The plan is controversial because it would mean the road – which would take traffic from St Vincent St to Whakatu Drive and would become State Highway 6 – would run through the middle of Victory. There is also debate around whether there is enough traffic in the region to justify spending tens of millions of dollars on a new road.

Supporters of the link say it will take the State Highway off Rocks Rd, allowing it to be developed into a world-class promenade. Another argument in support of the road is the vulnerability of Rocks Rd as a secure arterial route to the city. In 2011, the road was washed out for months after a massive storm, leaving just one route to the city, via Waimea Rd. Nelson Weekly spoke with six councillors for their thoughts on the study and whether they supported the road. All refused to comment on the record because an email had gone out telling them to keep quiet on the issue until after the announcement. NZTA spokesman Anthony Firth also refused to comment. ‘I didn’t even know I was pregnant’

Imagine only having eight hours to prepare yourself for becoming a parent? That was the reality for Nelson couple Charlene Wells and Eamon Parkes, who didn’t even realise Charlene was pregnant until she went into labour on Thursday morning. Now they have a healthy 7lb 9oz baby boy named Carlo.

“I had back pain on Wednesday night which got worse, so we went to A&E early on Thursday morning,” says Charlene. They ran some tests on Charlene to see what the cause of pain was.

They also suggested doing a pregnancy test – which came back positive - and then an ultrasound confirmed that she was in fact between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant. Charlene then gave birth to Carlo on Thursday after 12 hours of labour.

Surprise baby the ‘best gift ever’ for new parents FROM PAGE 1 Charlene says there were no obvious signs of pregnancy and, because the placenta was at the front of her uterus, she did not feel any kicks or movement from her baby. She had no morning sickness, and no obvious baby bump - just what she thought was a bit of weight gain. “I was quite shocked,” says Charlene. “It never crossed my mind that I could be pregnant.” The couple say that they had never planned on having children, but they are now absolutely “over the moon” with their bundle of joy. “He’s the best gift ever,” says Eamon. They have been blown away by the support of the Nelson community, who have been donating various baby items such as clothing and blankets to them after a friend posted the news on the ‘Pay it Forward Nelson’ and “Nelson Garage Sale’ Facebook pages. But despite their happy news, the couple have been given 90 days notice to move out of their current rental due to the owner putting it on the market, and they are on the hunt for a new place in Richmond.

Recycle bin rules enforced Locally Owned and Operated

Needles, nappies and a samurai sword – they’ve all been found smuggled into bags put out for recycling and those that collect the recycling have had enough. Nelmac, which runs the kerbside recycling for Nelson City Council, says it’s collected recycling put in plastic supermarket bags to “help out” but an increasing amount of non-recyclable rubbish is being smuggled into bags. That’s prompted Nelmac to enforce an already existing rule that all recycling must be in an open crate so those picking up the rubbish can see what’s in there. “Over the years people have just got a little bit looser around it,” says Nelmac’s marketing and communications manager Angela Mockett. “I suppose new people come to the city, our guys have tried to help by not being massively rigid all the time when they have thought people don’t understand, but some people are using the recycling system to get rid of anything they don’t want and at the end of the day someone has to pay for that.” She says the main reason for

A team of qualified professionals with that X-Factor! A Nelmac runner snapped this shot of bags that were put out for recycling, not much of which is recyclable. the enforcement is safety for staff. “With the bins they can go up to it, they can see what’s there, it’s either good stuff or it’s not and they just pick it up and chuck it in, they don’t have to touch it, they don’t have to wrap their hands around it like a plastic bag and risk getting a syringe in their hands, or anything like that,” says Angela. A similar enforcement of glass bottles put out for collection was introduced last year and Angela says understanding from the public was very good. But Nelson resident John Hogan says the new rules make it tough for a lot of families. “We’ve put plastic bags of recycling out with a full blue bin for years. We’re a family of seven so we can’t fit our recycling

into one of those pathetic blue bins.” John says he called Nelmac to complain and was told they could buy another blue bin for $20. “But I’m not that keen to spend money on bins. I could just get rid of the recycling in a wheelie bin, which is defeating the purpose of having the system.” Angela says people can put their recycling in any sturdy, plastic bin and hardware stores sell them for as little as $8. People can also drop off their recycling for free at the refuse centre on Vivian St, Tahunanui. Nelmac also say that paper tied in plastic bags creates a real hassle for staff and they urge people to stack them loosely at the bottom of the crate.

Rural water restrictions on horizon: Nelson’s outlying rural areas are on the verge of implementing water restrictions due to dropping river levels. The Nelson City Council warn that, without more rain, restrictions for rural Nelson residents who take their water directly from streams and wells are just around the corner. Council estimates this affects about 500 households and they are being kept up to date with the situation by mail. They allege that Schaeffer, after 2008, made further representations to them that they were part-owners of a vineyard and winery in New Zealand. Mullen says he and his trust have personally paid Schaeffer US$1.6 million, while Lee says he paid US$700,406. The day before the royal visit, Schaeffer failed to dismiss a lawsuit brought against him in the Nelson High Court by James Murren and Daniel Lee. James is chief executive of MGM Resorts International, a multi-billion dollar Las Vegas hospitality business, while Lee is also the boss of a casino company in the same city. Murren and Lee say they and others discussed forming a partnership with Schaeffer in 2002 that would own a vineyard and winery. They say Schaeffer sought capital contributions from

Jetstar now flying to Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

Jetstar’s entry into regional New Zealand begins today with the first flights to Nelson arriving this afternoon. Jetstar announced in September that it would begin flying to Napier, Palmerston North, New Plymouth and Nelson to challenge Air New Zealand on regional routes. The first Jetstar flight to leave Nelson will depart at 2.55 this afternoon,

bound for Auckland, with an official function at Nelson Airport from 1pm. Jetstar communications manager Phil Boeyen says the first flight is sold out and bookings are strong for the rest of the month. “Bookings have been very encouraging and the support from the regions, including Nelson, has been very welcoming.” At the celebration this afternoon, Nelson mayor Rachel Reese will greet Jetstar CEO

Jetstar’s Q300 plane that will be flying from Nelson today. David Hall, there will also be a welcome from a kapa haka group and a water arch

will be formed for the Q300 to drive under. Nelson Airport manager Rob Evans says Jetstar’s arrival is “great news”. “It reinforces that Nelson is a desirable destination. Jetstar are a significant airline and these three to four extra flights per day will make a big impact on the region.” Nelson is now serviced by six airline companies, Air New Zealand, Originair, Kiwi Regional Airlines, Sounds Air, Air2there and Jetstar.

Opera in the Park confirmed for February Nelson’s largest outdoor concert has been confirmed, with performers from around New Zealand set to take to the Trafalgar Park stage. Opera in the Park was unveiled as part of the Summer in Nelson festival’s programme this week. It will be held on February 13 and will feature Dave Dobbyn, Jackie Clarke, Anna Leese, Jared Holt, Modern Maori Quartet and Orchestra Wellington. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says the event is always a highlight. “Because of the name people think it’s all opera, but it’s a great range and I’m sure the

line up will be very popular.” Councillor Gaile Noonan says a highlight of the event is the number of families that come down with a picnic to enjoy the music. Earlybird tickets are $15 and a new initiative this year is ‘pay it forward’, which encourages people to buy tickets that will be passed on to recent refugees in Nelson. Festivals team leader Axel de Maupeou says Opera in the Park is a huge event and they want to involve new Nelsonians. The Summer Events programme will be delivered to homes this week.

“Everyone agrees that the toxin phase of any restoration project in New Zealand is not people’s favourite part, but it is a necessary part of restoring eco systems in New Zealand in the face of the plagues of introduced species.” The list of pests includes mice, rats, stoats, possums, deer and goats. “New Zealand has no native mammal species except for bats, so basically any mammal found on the site is a pest,” says Hudson. The project has been 13 years in the making and Hudson says this is just a step closer to the prize. “It will not just create a restored eco system behind the fence but it will bring this wildlife back to the whole region, people will have rare native wildlife in their gardens and back in their daily life - that’s the vision for this whole project.” The sanctuary is expected to be open as a visitor attraction in 2017. “The goal is to create a fully-restored ecosystem on Nelson’s doorstep that will restock Nelson with the vanished native species that once called Nelson home.” The pest removal operation is set to cost $220,000, all of which was secured in 2013 with a grant from the Canterbury Community Trust.

Brook Waimarama Sanctuary are about to take the next step in creating a protected, native sanctuary – pest eradication. The trust have filed for resource consent applications to remove all pests from the area. General manager Hudson Dodd says the trust is expecting the decision to take a while. “It’s a drawn out process but we expect a decision on that in March next year. If it’s approved then we would be aiming to proceed with the operation as early as winter of 2016.” The eradication process involves three aerial drops of poison and hand-baiting of Brodifacoum, a rodent poison in the form of pellets that has been altered to remain harmless to a number of native species. The eradication is expected to be a six month process which Hudson says will be contained to the fenced area. “It’s impossible to give guarantees but we’re taking every step we can to ensure a safe and successful operation. The site will be secured by the fence so there won’t be people taking their dog for a walk and getting it poisoned, and the buffer zone is within the fence to ensure there is not accidental overshot distribution of the pellets.” Hudson says that while people may disagree with the eradication, it must be done.

Speed drop at black spot to stay Road safety improvements at the intersection of Main Rd Stoke and Elms St are one step closer to completion, with Nelson city councillors voting to move forward with a permanent speed reduction at Thursday’s works and infrastructure meeting. There have been two crashes at the intersection this year, which resulted in a temporary speed reduction from 80km to 50km in August while a crash reduction study was carried out. Two options were considered for the

upgrade. Option one was recommended at Thursday’s meeting, which will see a permanent speed reduction on Main Rd Stoke between Saxton Rd and Salisbury Rd to 60km, along with minor improvements. This comes at an estimated cost of $150,000, which will be accommodated within the existing minor improvements budget. Option two was considered to be “too cost-prohibitive,” and would have involved modifications to the intersection layout in order retain the 80km speed limit, with an estimated price tag of $650,000 -

reducing the speed to 60km is a “very costeffective” way of making the intersection safer. “We’ll now go out to the community with that decision, and we’d like to see the work get done as soon as possible,” he says. Eric says a small sub-committee of councillors will be formed, and a community meeting at Saxton Field is planned for early March. Other engagement with the community will include letters to adjacent residents, businesses, stakeholders and landowners.

Waimea Motors An exciting change is coming to Waimea Motors in Richmond when it becomes an NPD site from January 1. Putting customers first Barry Milne knows a thing or two about the fuel industry and why Waimea Motors has been a success. “I believe our site is so successful because we are focused on our customers’ needs. We know many of them and they are regulars because of the service we provide,” he says. “One of my staff members has been with me for over 25 years and that’s what customers enjoy seeing familiar faces and being looked after.” That won’t change as Barry and his team will be staying on at Waimea Motors. Barry and Cindy Milne at what will become NPD Waimea Motors

Back to where it all started The Mobil station in Gladstone Road has been in the Milne family for 54 years and owner Barry Milne says the timing is right for the change. “Myself and the staff are hugely excited about the changes coming with NPD.” NPD has enjoyed some rapid growth throughout the South Island over the past couple of years and view Waimea Motors as a future Flagship site and a valuable addition to their Retail Network. NPD’s General Manager, Barry Sheridan, says “we are very excited and proud to have

Waimea Motors, which is a very high profile site, join our NPD Retail Network”. Waimea Motors is a real family affair — it has been in the Milne family since 1961, purchased by Barry’s parents Peter and Jo along with two other business partners. From late 1961 the firm changed suppliers to Mobil and in 1975 Peter and Jo became the sole owners of Waimea Motors. Waimea Motors was also the birthplace of NPD which the Milne family started in the 1960s. In the 1990s Barry took over the running of Waimea Motors.

— “I believe our site is so successful because we are focused on our customers’ needs.” — The changeover on January 1 will mean that NPD card holders will be able to use their NPD cards for fuel savings, SuperGold card holders will be able to save 15 cents a litre. In addition, Waimea Motors will accept all supermarket dockets, which means a guaranteed saving of 12 cents a litre, irrespective of the value detailed on the grocery docket.

Joins “NPD are very competitive and are serious in the retail market. Now is the time to go with them, there are great opportunities,” says Barry Milne.

Improving the local experience Barry admits being situated on the left hand side heading out of Richmond town is an advantage, but he says it’s down to personal preference why people buy their fuel from them. “We are born and bred local people and we’ve never shifted. Waimea Motors has been in the family for 54 years and it’s all about loyalty.”

“The site will be a 24/7 Retail Model offering the ability to purchase all grades of fuel from all dispensers on the forecourt and the truckstop outside of normal opening hours. All dispensers can be accessed via the OPT (Outside Payment Terminal) located within the kiosk at the truckstop area. In April/May we plan to remodel the site with our new NPD Retail branding. This will be complemented with a whole new and larger canopy, new and wider spaced pump islands with all new pumps. It will be far more user friendly and will enchance the traffic flow movements for all customers.”

“The planned revamp in April/May next year to the forecourt and the change to NPD branding and colours and what they have to offer is a huge attraction, not only to us but our customers.”

— “We are born and bred local people.” — GM Barry Sheridan looks forward to the many and mutual benefits this new and valued Partnership produces. “Partnering with Waimea Motors enhances our retail network across the South Island. It will be one of our biggest retail sites offering a great service and range of quality products to the market.”

The company has built an enviable reputation for service with the focus on their customers’ needs.

“We believe NPD Card gives the best value to our customers.” Barry Milne is confident of attracting more customers to Waimea Motors because of what NPD can offer with the NPD fuel cards, SuperGold card discounts and supermarket docket savings. The sites remodelling enhancements will also assist with this aspect.

Your Voice

We spend more online: While I am both sympathetic and empathetic towards retailers in Nelson, (as I have previously run a family retail business in the Nelson CBD, and I have friends and family in retail), I am spending more and more online. Quite simply, many retailers in Nelson, and in New Zealand, are guilty of horrendous price gouging. I accept I’ll pay

PENKETH PROPERTY LAW

a little more in NZ because of a smaller market, and perhaps a little more still for being off the beaten track in Nelson. What I won’t accept, however, is paying 2-300 per cent (non sale) more than customers do abroad, on anything from whiteware, branded shoes, to electronics. I like to think I am loyal to other Nelsonians, and I won't buy online for the sake of saving $10-20, as in your article. I prefer physical stores. However, even if the government does implement GST, it still wouldn’t make financial sense in many instances to buy local. Interesting article. David West.

What a friggin idiot! Who the hell does he think he is??? Donna Fuller.

Gone are the days when one can leave their house and cars unlocked, as this shows that these days you can't trust anyone. Simon Scowen. I bet those people whose cars he stole would love to teach him a lesson for being so damned stupid coming up with a pathetic statement like that. A total waste of oxygen. Darryn Gray. New Nbus route for Stoke: Atawhai needs more bus times and later buses...PLEASE. Nancy Holden. Nelson has public transport?? Brian Gower. This is awesome, what a great tool for Stoke! I've always thought the N bus has been a great addition to our community and now it's extending and obviously listening to the needs of the community. Well done. Lauren Penney.

That's amazing. Debra Baker. House built for Hospice: What a generous offer. Awesome. Angelia Harris. Well done, you guys. That's awesome. Sharon Fisher. That's awesome. What a building team you must have! Carmel Green. Cyclist hit by van on Tahuna Dr: They actually need to make a pathway right in through and around the whole region in Nelson for cycling. Just like how they have one in Victory area as it's far too dangerous for them to be on the road with vehicles, there's been so many accidents or near accidents with vehicles and cyclists around Nelson. Tanita Rotana. Water restrictions likely: Build some dams, Libya doesn't run out of water and it's desert. It's called planning, sadly very little here. Brian Gower.

Santa’s in town

Santa took to the streets of Richmond on Sunday for the town’s annual Santa Parade and this weekend it’s Nelson’s turn. The Nelson Santa Parade is from 1pm this Sunday, December 6. It starts at the top of Trafalgar St and will make its way to Trafalgar Park. Once at Trafalgar Park, the Christmas Carnival will kick into action.

Santa’s warm-up in Richmond attracted big crowds on Sunday. Organiser Kim Quint says this year’s parade was amongst some of the best Richmond had seen. “I think it was actually one of the better ones because we have tried over the years to really slow the parade down, it gives people a chance to interact with the crowd and for the crowd to actually see

I think the calibre of floats was really good, people put in a lot of effort.” Waimea JAB Rugby Club won third prize for best float with Ray White Real Estate finishing in second place, while the big prize went to Grace Church, whose float depicted the nativity, along with a live band. A special mention also went out to the Scouts and the Nelson Speedway.

Neighbours 'saved my life' Locally Owned and Operated

Simon Bloomberg

Bill Morris reckons his neighbours saved his life and his house, after they got him to safety and then helped fight a fire that destroyed the garage on his Main Road Hope property on Monday. The 87-year-old was asleep in his house when a fire started in his nearby garage at around 3pm. The flames were so intense they started blistering the paint on the back wall of his house 10 metres away and Bill says "another five minutes and I would have been a goner". "I was lying there asleep and Dick (Barker) from next door came in and said 'your shed's on fire, we'd better get out'. I looked out and all I could see in the shed was a sheet of flames, so we got out quick. "We had to go out the front door - it was too hot at the back. The paint on the house was starting to blister and it would have gone up too if someone hadn't grabbed the garden hose and hosed the back wall down."

Above: Bill Morris stands where his garage used to be at his Main Rd Hope property. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Left: The garage was destroyed by fire last Tuesday. Photo: Brittany Spencer. Bill was full of praise for his neighbours Dick and Marianne Hart-Biggs, and her friend Tony Inwood who hosed down the

back wall of his house. He also thanked the fire fighters "who did a mighty job". "Everyone did a good job. They

were all fabulous. "They are such good neighbours. Everybody minds their own business but if you need help then

they are all there." Bill says he has also received plenty of support since the fire with his son Robbie, neighbours, and members of the Wakefield Church, checking to see if he is alright and bringing him food. "They are all looking after me so well," he says. Bill says he was insured and work has already started clearing the remains of the garage from the property. "I've been paying insurance for 62 years and never had a claim, so I suppose I'll make up for it now," he says. It's been a tough year for Bill, who has lived on the same property all his life, after his wife of 62 years passed away in February. However, Bill remains cheerful saying he feels incredibly lucky to have such good neighbours and that the fire didn't happen late at night when everyone else was asleep. Bill says the fire inspectors told him that the blaze was started by a rat chewing through wiring in a chest freezer, causing a spark that ignited the rat's nest.

Big turn out for House for Hospice open day

Douglas Building Contractor’s House for Hospice opened its doors on Saturday for an open home, despite the fact it had already sold. The four bedroom home was the brainchild of Douglas Building Contractors owners Andrew and Ange Douglas. The couple gathered support from several local trades to create the house and will donate all profits from the sale of the

house to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Around 200 people turned up to view the house, but real estate agent Mitchell Wilson says the house had sold in August. “We wanted to give everyone the chance to come up, see the house and support our suppliers. There were a few people who were very disappointed that it had sold, but everyone thought it was a beautiful home.”

Movember comes to a close

Best mo winner, Dale Carston, and judge Shawn Stormann at the mo party at Founders Brewery.

Nelson’s finest moustaches were on show at Founders Brewery on Sunday to bring the month of Movember to a close. The brewery team joined forces with Stormy’s Man Cave Barber shop for a Magnum P.I themed ‘mo party’, which managed to raise over $600 for Nelson Hospice and the Movember Founda-

tion - a global charity committed to “changing the face of men’s health.” Shawn Stormann from Stormy’s, plus the crowd, were in charge of judging the best mo’s, with categories ranging from ‘best ginger-stache,’ ‘best babystache’ and the ‘ugliest mo.’ The grand prize for the ‘best Tom Selleck mo' went to Dale Carston, who is

one of the barbers at Stormy’s. Shawn says he was impressed with the range of mo’s on display and the support from everyone involved. The fundraiser also included a photo booth, food carts, live music from Nelson bands Bat Hawk and the ImMOgrants, and a Magnum P.A beer which is still available at the brewery.

Fun day for Toy Library The Nelson Community Toy Library is getting ready for its annual family fun day and fundraiser, which will be held this Saturday from 9:30 – 11am. On offer will be a bouncy castle, Flossie, face painting, a visit from Santa, a cake stall, tea and coffee for parents, and a raffle which includes some great prizes that have kindly been donated by local business owners. This year they will also be running a garage sale with deleted toys and other good quality children's and baby gear that has been donated by committee members.

Buying the Cable Bay Cafe was not on the agenda for Mandy McKellar, but a quick decision two months ago saw her not only buy the Cafe, but move to the bay from Christchurch to run the business. Now in her fifth week of trading, Mandy can make a mean long black and, under the guidance of café manager Justine Williams, is getting the hang of frothing the milk too. Cable Bay Café’s philosophy is to create deliciously fresh home-made food, with all ingredients sourced locally. Dishes include classic mince on toast, Asian-style chicken salad, a fillet steak sandwich, brunch options and Justine’s gourmet fish ‘n’ chips. Justine also has a passion for baking which keeps the cabinets full of mouth-watering cakes and slices, while the regular options include delightful smoked fish pies, chicken pies and filo parcels. Cable Bay Cafe is both a child and dog-friendly destination, set in a beautiful location just 20 minutes north of Nelson and a stone's throw from the beach. Opening hours are Wednesday-Friday, 9.30am - 5pm and Sat/Sun, 9.30am-7pm. Private functions are welcomed. Modern day life is a constant rush of work and family, and often our bodies are not given the attention they need to maintain physical well-being. Dhyana Diekmann is passionate about helping people regain those feelings of good health and inner peace through deep tissue massage. Rebalancing is a form of deep tissue massage, combining the techniques of rolfing – manipulating the body’s connective tissues in order to release stress patterns and postural integration. The Dhyana Diekmann technique acknowledges the unified function of mind, body and heart, as our thoughts and feelings affect our body’s well-being, and vice versa. Dhyana’s work can assist in the release of muscular and emotional tension, extending flexibility, enhancing vitality and creating a sense of expansiveness. From the end of December, Dhyana will be welcoming clients to her new practices at 3 Atarau Way, Tahunanui, and Equilibrium at 10 Church St, Nelson. A ten session series is recommended to integrate the entire body, with 60 or 90 minute sessions available. Contact Dhyana today on 027 777 0880 for more information on the body work technique or to book a session. Roller Sports Club gets a splash of colour Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

What was a “dingy grey wall” at the Nelson Roller Sports Club is now a work of art, thanks to Texan artist J Muzacz. The aim of the mural, according to rink secretary Debra Jane, was to brighten up the space and “bring the outside in” to the rink, which is home to inline hockey, speed skating, artistic skating and roller derby. Debra says the mural “totally transforms” the whole building, which is located in the Tahunanui Reserve. “We are in such a beautiful reserve, and we wanted to bring all that in,” she says. “We’ve had to do so many major repairs to the building over the years that we haven’t been able to do the fun stuff – like brighten it up.” She says the project was very much a “whole club effort.” They set a goal of two years to save the money, find an artist and get it painted. They found J Muzacz through Facebook and Debra says they couldn’t have found anyone better to do the job. “He came in and his enthusiasm was just amazing

artist J Muzacz and members from the Nelson Roller Sports Club stand in front of their new mural, which “brings the outside in” to the skating rink in Tahuna. Photo: Kate Russell. – he put in some really long hours and he did so much research into making sure all the little details were correct.” Before Muzacz started work, volunteers prepped the wall themselves and then it took him around five days to paint it, which included some 12 hour sessions. He says the mural, which saw him go through around 100 cans of spray paint, was “a lot of fun” to paint. “It’s very unique to this environment and space – you’ll never see another one like it, that’s for sure.” Muzacz, who is heading back to the States this week has also

been involved in brightening up other parts of the region during his time here, including three murals along Milton St. Deb says that she hopes they can eventually brighten up other parts of the rink, but in the meantime, the new wall will be sure to inspire skaters – new and experienced. The Nelson Roller Sports Club holds public sessions every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3pm, and on Friday nights from 6:30 to 9pm. Entry is $8.00, which includes skate hire. They are also available for birthday parties and private sessions.

Nelson’s ‘community heroes’ celebrated Locally Owned and Operated

Nine Nelsonian heroes were celebrated last night during an awards ceremony at The Petite Fleur. As part of the 2016 New Zealander of the Year Awards, the nine Kiwibank Local Heroes were presented with specially-made medals to officially recognise their achievements. Mayor Rachel Reese was on hand to present the medals and congratulate the recipients on their awards. “These fine people embody the qualities that have long held our community together. Their charity, selflessness and generosity have touched upon the lives of so many and make our community a better place to live. That’s why we stand with them tonight and honour them as Nelson’s very own local heroes,” she said. The recipients of the Kiwibank Local Hero Awards for Nelson were Sue Netto, Laurie Christian, Graeme James McConnell, Penny Molnar, Pam Harwood, Colin Agnew, Dr Kay Sneddon, Aine Byrne and Chris Bascand. Now in their seventh year, the annual Kiwibank Local Hero Awards are the ultimate recognition for good deeds in the community. This year, 292 medals will be presented nationwide with one

Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year winner to be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Awards Gala in February next year. Kiwibank CEO Paul Brock said Kiwibank was proud to support local communities celebrating their outstanding citizens during the past seven years. “The Local Hero Awards are very special. They recognise good people in our communities. People whose sacrifice, optimism, and commitment make others better off. “They might not see their deeds as

special. But we know otherwise, so these awards are a way of saying thanks.” In December, the judging panel – comprising representatives of all the awards’ patrons, presenters, sponsors, community leaders and independent experts – will decide the 10 Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year semifinalists, with three finalists to be announced in the New Year. All national finalists will attend the New Zealander of the Year Awards Gala where one will be named the 2016 Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year.

Climate change parade attracts 500

Saturday’s Climate Change parade had just under 500 people out in the sunshine, walking from Tahunanui Beach to Anzac Park. The event raised climate change awareness and called on our country’s leaders to make a change ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris that begins today. Organiser Emily King says she wanted the event to be a fun and positive demonstration rather than an angry protest. “We had students out the front singing and dancing, everyone enjoyed the speeches and the minute of silence for those affected in the Paris attacks was very poignant.” Parade helper Leigh Marshall says the public were very supportive. “We had a lot of toots and waves and people joining us along the way. We care about our planet and environment and we just want our leaders to care for the environment.”

Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game

The trout fishing season in the Nelson Tasman area is well underway, and this year our rivers and lakes are providing superb fishing for keen anglers. However, with higher temperatures we see an increase in pressure on our rivers and lakes from locals and tourists, and a risk of

spreading unwanted water weeds and organisms such as Didymo. Our rivers and lakes are under constant threat from the unwanted introduction of pests and it is up to all individuals to ensure their equipment is clean and free of pests before moving between waterways. These pests are easy to transfer, but difficult and costly (or impossible) to control. This summer, freshwater advocates will be out and about at holiday hotspots as part of the Check, Clean, Dry campaign. Their role is educating the public on the campaign's message, as well as giving away useful cleaning items so it’s easier for everyone to do their part.

Council buys land to develop Nelson marina Nelson City Council has agreed to purchase 3065 square metres of land along Akersten Street. This area includes the existing hardstand facility, as well as a wharf, jetty and other infrastructure associated with the operation of a hardstand. The agreement is still conditional and subject to due diligence, which will be completed by June 30, 2016. Due diligence includes condition assessments, transfers of consents and requirements associated with the operation of the hardstand. The cost of the land has yet to be released, but the council has set aside $1.5 million for the development of the Nelson marina. If finalised, the purchase will secure access for marine users to hardstand facilities that are close to the existing marina. The hardstand provision at the marina is an issue that has remained unresolved for many years. This had been identified as an important issue for this council, and a provision for the funding of a hardstand area was outlined in the council’s long term plan. Mayor Rachel Reese says she is pleased to see progress on this issue. “Entering into this purchase agreement shows the council’s intent to commit to the marina area. This will address the needs of many marina users, and it is fortunate that such an opportunity has been made available after so many years.”
