Band-mates reflect on NZ selection Nelson’s top young brass band members had some reinforcement last month as 36 other players from around the country joined them in Nelson for a week-long camp for the Secondary Schools Brass Band of New Zealand. Jarrah Dowrick of Nelson College, Danielle McQuinn of Nayland College and Madeleine Buront and Paige Newport, both of Nelson College for Girls,
were selected in the national band after making it through a gruelling selection process led by Nelson selectors Nick Sharpe and Mick Dowrick. The selection capped off a great year for the four-some, who were also members of the Nelson Vivace Youth Brass Band, which won the National Youth Champs in July. Mick says an influx of brass players
at a youth level in Nelson is great for the region and hosting the secondary school band showed Nelson had a quality setup. “It’s kudos for us as a region that we have been selected to host the band two years in a row.” The band played to an estimated 4000 primary school students and finished its week with a performance at the Theatre Royal.

“There’s another bulge coming a few years down the track and it’d bump up again after that.” The decision on which teachers could face the axe involves a long process he says. There are some positives in having a smaller amount of students though. “One good thing about the roll going down is students from outside our zone are able to come in and enroll. It means we fit our facilities a lot better and we’re not going to be squeezed for rooms, and there is a lot more ability for teachers to not have to move around classrooms.”

Nelson teachers and parents will march to the church steps on Saturday, protesting a change in funding for early childhood education. The protest is being organised by the Nelson Kindergarten Association and will start at three seperate points from 10am, Anzac Park, Suter Art Gallery and Smith City car park, with each group meeting at the church steps at 10.30am. The governement made significant cuts to funding earlier this year, putting presure on centres that carry mostly fully-qualified teachers and especially hurting kindergartens, which are committed to having all of its teachers qualified. “For many centres it will mean they will have to get rid of qualified staff and replace them with unqualified staff,” says teacher and representative for the New Zealand Educational Instidute, Virginia Stark. Costs are expected to rise for parents as well and money for resources will drop. “It’s esstential that we have qualified teachers working with children. We study for three years for a reason.” The protest will feature speeches and music with local politicans also invited.

Nelson rescue leader tops NZ It’s an individual award that was won by the team, says Nelson Tasman Emergency Group team leader Barry Rowe. He won the award for best team leader in the country at a national Resex competition over Labour weekend, featuring emergency response exercises. Fresh from helping in the Christchurch earthquake, the Nelson response team, or NZ-RT2, took a team of seven to the Resex competition in the Hutt Valley. NZ-RT2 is a registered volunteer organisation established in 2002 to enable the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management Group to better fulfil its requirements under the 2002 Act. It has strong direct connections to the New Zealand Fire Service, Rural
Fire, Land SAR, Cave SAR and St John. It currently has 21 active members, but may recruit up to a maximum of 24. Barry says the competition was a good indicator for the Nelson team and shows they are right up there with the best in the country. “We won two awards, team leader and one of the activities which was great considering we only went with seven and other teams had up to 12 people.” Eight teams from around the country participated in the event. “The team that went were very highly talented bunch. Any one of them could have led the team.” The team consisted of Tania Jones, Ian Watts, Juliet Westbury, Becky Marsay, KeBarry Rowe, of the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management Group, was judged best ven Alderton, Paul Newport and Barry. team leader in New Zealand at a recent competition. Birchwood goes potty for gala It’s a dirty way to raise money, but students at Birchwood School don’t mind a bit. After planting and learning how to garden last term, students of Room 6 at the school are now putting their skills to good use by painting 100 pots, which will be planted with a mystery seed to be sold at the school gala this weekend. Students painted the pots, donated by Bunnings, last week with old test pots the school had lying around. The pots will then be filled with dirt and have a seed planted in each. Teacher, Anna Fitchett says the project has been great fun for the students. “It’s been a good experience and they have all got involved. They will plant the seeds and have used their own designs on the pots. It’s great to see their creativity.” The pots will be for sale at the gala this Sunday, November 7, Brooklynn Cricton, 8, paints a pot that will be filled with dirt and plantat Birchwood School ed with a vegetable to be sold at the Birchwood School gala this weekfrom 11am to 3pm. end. St Barnabas fair attracts good, festive crowd
7
Hundreds of people flocked to the annual St Barnabas fair on Saturday, delighting organisers. “We’re very happy with the turn out. It’s a beautiful day. I had to go across the road a few minutes ago, and I heard the band and I thought ‘wow, it’s happened and it’s good’,” says fair convener David Featherstone. David was one of the three conveners along with Anne Egan and Marie Dale. The fair had everything for young and old, as balloon animals and face painting provided children with smiles, and the music, cakes and white elephant were another regular for the adults. “The crowd here at 9am was just amazing. We’re blessed with the beautiful morning, and that’s Eru Brown and Kyan Harris at the St Barnabas fair at Isel Park on the essence of a good fair I think.” Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Nayland College student Duncan McDougall, playing nine-square during lunchtime. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Nayland kicks off new playground trend Phillip Rollo From Pokemon cards to marbles, every school goes through different trends which eventually die out. But a group of Nayland College students have kept a traditional school yard game alive, playing nine square everyday since the beginning of 2010. “Every morning tea, every lunch time. We still play rain, hail or shine,” says student Isaak Neate. Nine square has also helped the students behave during the lunch hour. “There was a bit of tomfoolery going on with fruit wars, and me and Duncan McDougall thought, well, these squares have been here for years we better use them.” As the year wore on, more serious aspects came in to place, including a tournament which featured six different teams. “It was my idea to start with, and I told the sports council that we should run it,” says Ben Alder. The tournament was an immediate success. “Very, we even got the principal down to give out awards and spot prizes.” So starting this week, Nine Square 2.0 will take place in the quad, with nine teams now entered, including an all girls team. “It’s a big problem. There was rule that no females could play. But they’ve started their own team.” One student suggesting that girls have enough sports to play. “It’s a bit like netball. Guys don’t play that. This is our sport for the guys,” says Aaron Dempster. But the girls team will be allowed to play in the Nine Square 2.0 tournament and could upset the front running boys teams Abo’s Army and the WWE Superstars. With the competitiveness of the nine square at an all time high at Nayland, Ben says he had emailed other schools in the hope of organising an interschool competition. “We approached Boys College, but they didn’t reply, maybe they were too scared. But I think we’ll follow that up next year and push for it.” With only weeks remaining in the school calendar, the boys aren’t worried about nine square coming to an end as they managed to have “a few kick arounds” in the past holidays, and there’s always someone willing to start up a game on a Saturday night. “We always take chalk to a party.”

Organ donors give Church new sound The campaign was dubbed ‘be an organ donor’ and those who did have helped bring new life to St Andrews Church, raising $22,000 for a new organ. St Andrews old organ had been at the church for 40 years and its sound was starting to get a little “irregular” says organist Lois Diaper. “There was a fund set up some time ago for a new or-

gan so we decided to resurrect it and we’ve worked quite hard with various fundraisers, we also got a grant from the Presbyterian Savings and Development Society which gave us enough.” One of the fundraisers was named “be a key person, become an organ donor” which raised a significant amount of money from within the 100-member strong church by “selling” keys of the organ to people. It arrived in the middle of October and was hoisted into its second story position thanks to an Accessman scissor-lift. The churches other organist, Jennifer Norriss, says the organ is a pleasure to play. “It’s lovely and it has some great features, the trick now is not to muck it up,” she jokes. The organ has been tuned to a pipe organ but is electronic so comes with a fraction of the maintenance of a pipe organ. The new sound is just “wonderful” they say and has struck a chord with church members who are thrilled with it says Lois. “We’ve even had visitors to the region come and play it and they have been delighted.” To help celebrate the new organ Alan Kay Grey, organist and minister of music at the cathedral, will be playing a recital at the church on Sunday, 21 November. “We are really looking forward to hearing him play.” Lois Diaper, left, and Jennifer Norriss of St Andrews Church in Stoke with their St Andrews is one of about half a dozen churches in new $22,000 organ which arrived last month, replacing their old “well-used” orNelson to have an organ. gan. Flower Bradley, of Stoke, getting used to place names. If she wins a radio competition she will be the voice of electronic Tomtom’s that directs drivers to their destination. Photo: Andrew Board.
The sound of an annoying american voice telling drivers where to go via an electronic “TomTom” in their car will be a thing of the past, and it could be replaced by Nelson woman Flower Bradley’s. Flower entered a competition on the Edge radio station to become the voice of the TomTom and in the process, win a car. She has made it to the top five from hundreds of entries and has been flown to Auckland to meet the other finalists. The winner of the competition was annoucned Monday afternoon, just after Nelson Weekly went to print. But Flower says she’s had a great ride, win or lose. “It’s been really fun and I’ve had a great time, it will be really weird if I win, I bet my ex-husband won’t be buying one if I do,” she joked. Flower says she never thought of her voice as being quintessentially kiwi but did work on radio for a few years.

BC4BC raises $36K for Nelson’s breast cancer fight Garden in need of a new look? An army of pink-uniformed women and men leapfrogged, jumping-jacked, and danced around the Nelson College for Girls gymnasium on Saturday during the inaugural Boot Camp for Breast Cancer (BC4BC), helping to raise a total of $36,000 for the event. The event’s sponsors donated $10,000 while individual registrations and individual sponsorships brought in over $16,000. The silent auction, with 50 items valued at nearly $10,000, brought another $5,800 into the Jenna Eathborne and Steve Fitzgerald at the BC4BC at Nelson coffers. Another $4,000 in donations was also received. College for Girls gym on Saturday. Photo: John-Paul Pochin. All money raised at BC4BC for the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust stays in the top of the South. Founder Kate Coote says, “I have to say, our first year was a smashing hit. The event committee is truly awed with the support we’ve had.” This year’s event aimed to raise money to help purchase a portable ultrasound machine to be used for surgical outpatients at Nelson Hospital. An ultrasound machine would allow guided biopsies to be taken in clinic rather than on a separate visit, reducing stress and waiting time for patients and their families. More than 30 teams pulled, balanced, ran and went home wet but happy after the second annual Bowater Motor Group Top Team heat at Saxton Field on Sunday. The day was the second of three heats in the competition with the final being held at Moutere Hills at the end of the month. Organiser Hayden Bryant was rapt with the response and the spirit in which the event was participated in. “It was better than last year I think, we’ve had great feedback from teams.” In case you were wondering, the Nelson Weaklies did not qualify for the finals; it did make the top ten though... of Daryl Jones bounces out of the giant obstacle James Scoltock gets a shower while competing at 12 teams in its grade. • The previous Strong NNW winds on Sunday made for great kite surfing at Tahunanui Beach and the Haven. Please remember all kite surfers are to stay out of the swimming area inside the black buoys off Tahunanui Beach, even if there are no swimmers. By entering this area, experienced guys set a bad example that others may follow. Please try to avoid this. • All vessels are encouraged to exercise caution when approaching the cut in large seas and strong tides. Stay on the leads going in or out. • The planned flare demonstration that was postponed occurred last week. I hope you were able to witness what a flare looked like and thought about what to do if you sight one: Try to relate its location to a landmark behind the flare or use something nearby you can relate its location to; stay in the same place; call the police and advise your name, contact number and location and the time of sighting. • There have been several ships entering and departing the port during the last few weeks. The Russian Fishing fleet have returned for the maintenance period. The dredge the Kawatiri from Westport has finished her maintenance dredging for the port, Thanks guys for a job well done. • Log ships, car carriers, container vessel and a flurry of activity amongst the fishing fleet and sailing vessels has meant the port has been very busy. A warm welcome to the HMNZS Taupo in for a few days R and R.

Street ambassadors Chokerman Race is a thrilling spectacle back on the beat Nelson people venturing out after dark will again notice Street Ambassadors spreading safety messages from this Friday. The team, in their distinctive orange vests, will be on duty each weekend from 9.30pm till 4am as the summer party season warms up. Nelson City Council’s Safe City Adviser, Ingrid Beach, says council has been involved in delivering this service since 2004. “Our Street Ambassadors now have a very good rapport with the young people who are out partying over summer. Because of that, young people know there are people they can talk to if they are in need of help or advice throughout the night.” Feedback about the Street Ambassador Service is that it plays an important role in reducing trouble on the streets over summer and
keeping Nelson a safe place for everyone to enjoy. The Street Ambassadors work in pairs throughout the weekend nights, delivering safety messages, offering advice and assistance when needed and intervening with the aim to stop trouble before it starts. Street Ambassadors don’t work alone. They keep in touch via cell phones and radios with Police, Maori Wardens and Nelson Community Patrol volunteers, who monitor the closed circuit television cameras on the weekend nights. Street Ambassadors team leaders are qualified to administer first aid. The ambassadors are all experienced youth workers provided by HYPE-GS (Help for Young People at Events and Gathering Spaces). The Ambassadors will be out on the streets until the end of March.

Rex Kelly has sap in his veins. “I’ve been a logger all my life and for as long as I can recall I’ve loved the forestry industry; the serious commercial aspects and the sporting challenges as you’ll see at Pigeon Valley on the weekend,” says the Brightwater man. Rex is in charge of organising one of the great spectacles of logger sports – the grueling Chokerman Race at the 2010 Logging Weekend. “At this stage we’ve got eight teams competing but I wouldn’t mind betting a few more come out of the woodwork before and on the day,” says Rex. He explains, the Chokerman Race, in which two teams of four competitors square off, is run in such a way as to promote a real head-to-head challenge rather than a one horse race. The competitors begin each new challenge together with time and performance points and penalties deciding the ultimate winner. Splicing a wire rope to start the race is followed by crosscut sawing, tree trimming and blocking-up by different members of the team up with some energy-sapping runs over tough courses between each stage. Rex promises some thrilling contests so spectators should be at Higgins Park by Rex Kelly is gearing up for the Logging Weekend at Pigeon Valley 9.30am on Saturday to soak up the atmosphere before competition begins soon after. So you’ve got a great party planned and you want to add some pizzazz! How about a multimedia slideshow? Stephen and Katrina were busy planning their son Jack’s 21st. They had everything arranged. The band was booked, the cake and key ordered, catering and venue confirmed and invitations sent. It was going to be a grand event. But something was missing. They had great photos, videos and some newspaper clippings to celebrate Jack’s coming of age. But how could they present to their guests the happy memories of his growing up years? Well, they phoned “No problem,” said. “You bring us what you’ve got and we’ll do the rest. Remember to bring in his favourite music on a CD and we’ll set out a presentation that everyone will love. We can even supply a projector, screen and DVD player. Your guests will love it and we can come and video the evening.” So that’s exactly what Stephen and Katrina did and their guests had a wonderful party. Appleby and Redwoods Valley hosts community picnic
Over Labour weekend the Nelson Kildunne School of Irish Dancing sent dancers to the 60th National Feis (Irish Cultural competitions) in Christchurch. This is the first time anyone from Nelson has been. The dancers performed well says coach EJ Ryan with the highlights including Holly Dickison, winner of the 9-11 novice section and Emily Lauer, runner up of the 7-9 novice section. The team is from back left; EJ Ryan, Tessa McBride, Ali Burrell, Dayle Snowden, Ella King and Terri Snowden. Nelson group hosts Theatre Royal concert As part of their build up to the NZ women’s barbershop competitions, Nelson Bays Harmony is hosting a concert at the Theatre Royal this Saturday. The “Sounds Excellent” concert showcases a number of local performance groups who are excelling in their musical fields. From a cappella harmony to chamber music and vocal solo what these
performers have in common is the passion and dedication it takes to turn talent into excellence. Award-winning youth vocal ensemble Belle A Cappella; Anna Grahame, 2010 Top Female Vocalist at Excel School of Performing Arts; members of Nelson Youth Brass, currently NZ Champion Youth Band; Trio Dohnanyi, winner of this
year’s Chamber Music contest; Nelson’s leading world music choir, Mosaic; Octapella, a small choir with a great sound; Nelson Bays Harmony, award-winning women’s barbershop group; and special guests from Wellington Revelry quartet. More details of the Sounds Excellent performers can be found at www.nelsonharmony.org.nz.
Calling all residents of Appleby and Redwoods Valley, past and present. Planning and preparation is well underway for the annual Community Picnic to be held on Sunday 7 November at Rabbit Island and everyone with a connection to the area is invited to attend. Last year, a community picnic was held as part of the Appleby School Reunion celebrations and there were numerous requests for a similar event to be held on a regular basis. “In this day and age, when we are all so busy, it’s important to take time out to get together as a community,” says one of the organisers, Sue Davies. “Rural communities and the people living in them have changed significantly over the years and nowadays we often jump in the car to head to town, driving past neighbouring properties without even realising who lives there. This is an opportunity to put the ‘community’ back into the Appleby and Redwoods Valley Area.” Appleby School is well known as the ‘hub’ of the local community, but once children move on to intermediate and secondary schools, many families find they don’t have a lot of opportunity to
meet up with other locals. This picnic provides a chance for everyone to catch up with friends, and even make some new ones. “It’s kind of like a street party, but on a much bigger scale,” says Sue. “It will be low key with a focus on old-fashioned fun. There will be egg and spoon races, three legged races, sack races and tug-o-war competitions to keep young and old busy. There will be no fundraising, no raffles for sale and no stalls – in fact you can keep your wallet at home. “We want to make it a fun event for people to attend, as well as a nice simple one to organise. The aim is to make it an annual event, taking place on the first Sunday of every November.” If you would like to come, just turn up on the day. Make sure your neighbours know about it and bring them too. If you used to live in the area and want to catch up with old friends, it would be great to see you there. The picnic will be held in the Old Domain at Rabbit Island (signposts will be out) and the fun kicks off at 12.30 pm. Bring your own picnic food, a rug and chairs. If you need any further information, call Sue on 544 9894.

Nelson’s mudflats a popular playground Contributed by Alan Turley They caused quite a stink in Nelson for many years. The old open sewerage tanks were located directly behind Trafalgar Park, where the number two ground is located today. After being allowed to settle for a time, the untreated sewage was discharged direct into the Maitai River estuary from where it made its way past the main wharves, a fishing mecca for all the local kids, and on to the open sea. The Maitai River was also popular with the local kids, where many happy hours were spent eeling and catching fresh water crayfish and cockabullies. It was also popular with the older set as an ideal spot for catching whitebait during the season. It was in the days before all the harbour reclamation and the tidal mudflats came right up to the stone seawall at Haven Rd, along which ran the railway line to the Port. It was also the days before established boat marinas and fiberglass boats. Some of the privately owned wooden launches and yachts were moored in front of Wakefield Quay, where they were subjected to the extremes of high tides and stormy conditions. It was not uncommon for boats to
break their moorings during a storm and end up at Wakefield Quay. Just below the Trafalgar St Bridge, where Trailways now is, was Nelson’s unofficial marina. Here, various home built jetties were constructed from timber piles and walking planks. ‘The Boats’ as it was known, was a great play area for the kids of Nelson who clambered all over the Nelson mudflats from above. eDay back on again this weekend Nelson and Tasman residents can dispose of their old PCs, computer peripherals and mobile phones at eDay this Saturday. eDay is being held at over 50 drop-off locations throughout New Zealand, including Stoke and Lower Moutere, and is expected to divert 1,000 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) from landfills. The community drive-through event is an opportunity for households, schools, community groups and small businesses to clear out their garages and cupboards of computer equipment and old mobile phones, to be recycled for free. Last year’s eDay in Nelson and Tasman diverted 52 tonnes of e-waste from local landfills, with over 980 cars dropping off unwanted computer equipment. This year, the local event is being held at Enza, 484 Nayland Road, Stoke and K & F McLean, 88 Hursthouse Street, Lower Moutere between 9am and 3pm on Saturday 6th November. Local organiser, Mary Curnow of Nelson Environment Centre said eDay is giving locals the chance to dispose of their e-waste in an environmentally sound way. Future bright for football After conceding only one goal all tournament, Nelson Suburbs U-19’s shook up the entire South Island club championship in Christchurch, dispatching every team with ease on route to a 2-0 victory over Western in the final. “We shouldn’t have even conceded that goal. The ball was out, it bounced over the line and Darrell Hannah picked it up, and they got a free kick cause he handled the ball, and they scored off that free kick,” says coach Brendan Crichton. The statistics were one for the record books as goalkeeper Coey Turipa kept five clean sheets and scored a goal himself from a penalty. “Coey asked me, but he was already halfway up the field when he asked. I just said ‘yup, go for it’, it put a smile on his face.” While it is rare for a keeper to score, it is not often that a keeper scores the same amount of goals as he concedes in a tournament. Coey was barely tested in the competition, but says he enjoyed scoring. “I did a bit of a celebration, a forward roll. I made one amazing save against Hornby who we beat 12-nil, so that would’ve been pretty embarrassing to let that one in.” Billy Scott captained the side in the absence of Suburbs young player of the year, Adam Smith, who filled one of the guest spots for Tawa at the Napier City Rovers U-19 Youth Championship. “Billy brings a big physical presence there, he held the midfield together really well.” While Brendan had praise for everyone in the team, the defense in particular, he was impressed by the two College-Metro guest players, and two Suburbs youngsters. “I thought Adam Leckey and Jono Drew were very good, Jono especially. I hadn’t much to do with him before, but he did well. Even the young guys like Cory Brown and Fox [Slotemaker] contributed really well. I think the future is quite promising, arguably we’ve got the best young players in New Zealand.”
IN BRIEF
Steve Booth of Wakatu bowls in his sides second division win over Royal.
FOOTBALL Top performances for Nayland College and Nelson Suburbs hasn’t gone unnoticed, as devastating striker Gagame Feni was selected in the Canterbury United ASB Premiership squad along with goal keeper Coey Turipa. While Coey will be first choice for the U-19 squad in the National Youth League, both will benefit from the new ruling that requires two U-19 players in the match day squad. Suburbs players Adam Smith, Alex Ridsdale, Billy Scott and Matt Shaw have also been selected in the U-19 squad. Canterbury’s first game is away to Team Wellington on November 7. CriCkET Wakatu batsman Campbell McLean was the hero on day one of his sides game with Waimea Toi Toi United at Victory Square on Saturday in the Car Company Nelson Cricket first division. Campbell scored 182 runs in his sides total of 393, before nicking out. Wakatu has WTTU on the ropes in its innings at 57 for 3. Meanwhile Stoke/Nayland had a tough day, watching Motueka smash 497 for 9 at the Marsden Rec. Day two in both games will be played this Saturday. SkATEBOArDiNg Three of Nelson’s top skateboarders flew up to Auckland last week to take on the best of the country in the Cheapskates National Skateboarding Championship. Many of the region’s top swimmers entered what is the first of the summer swim meets. As the name suggests, most events at the Hot 100’s are swum over the 100m distance. In the 12-13 years age group, Ellie Rukuwai from Nelson South continued her dominance of this age group, winning the individual medley, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. There was excellent racing in the 14 and over age group involving Ryan Cheyne from Nelson South, Fraser Neill from Nelson and Kaiori McGuinniety from Nelson South. Ryan won the individual medley, breaststroke and freestyle with Fraser winning the butterfly. Chasing them all the way led Kaiori to recording a number of personal best times. Big bangs both off and on track Wayne Martin If the oohs and aahs were anything to go by at the Coca Cola fireworks night at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway last Saturday night then the show was as good or if not better than years gone by. Both kids and adults alike in the big crowd were entertained both on the terra firma and in the clear night sky above the track. The stockcar class is fast becoming the entertainers at each meeting with full fields and a plenty of contact and good old fashioned racing that is to be expected from this grade. The best Nelson car for the night would have to be Calab Russ with a first, second and a third place. The other big promotion for the night was the Mark Thorne Memorial for Sidecars. This was a closely fought battle between the pairings of Nathan Ching, Brad Kirk and Dallas Kelman, Adie Drake with the later pairing taking the silverware.
The first round of the TQ Midget club champs were also a on the program for the night and with a good field that was bolstered with cars from Christchurch the racing was good, close and clean. Pick of the locals were club stalwart Richard Cuthbert and Jason Riley. The Superstock club champs were also on offer as we saw the return of Craig Boote. While Craig didn’t get it all his own way he did have a say in the final outcome of which once the dust had settled saw a new club champ in the form of Shane Harwood in the ITM Superstock. Streetstocks and Ministocks made up the rest of the meeting and also did not disappoint when it come to the action. Special mention must be made for ever improving Leitham Schwass bagging a podium in his Ministock, The next meeting is scheduled for the 13th Nov with the main promotion being the hit to pass for the Stockcars and Production Saloons Best Pairs.

situations vacant
Here’s a great opportunity! We have a vacancy for a full time reporter at the popular Waimea Weekly. A chance to not only be in charge of what you write but also what you publish! Firstly we need PASSION, for our community and the job. Then we need ability to write, take a good photo and be pretty rounded in your ability to report on a variety of subjects. We need DEDICATION to constantly putting out a top quality publication, and someone who can work on weekends when needed. We offer a good remuneration package to the right person, which includes a company car and a politically incorrect environment to achieve in. In other words we are relaxed and enjoy a sense of humor in the workplace. We are not necessarily after a trained journalist, but if you have passion and can write - then we’re definately interested in what you can offer. We are the market leader and a privately NZ owned newspaper which is rare in todays environment! If you would like to work with us, then email us now on sales@waimeaweekly. co.nz to arrange to discuss this further.
