Nelson roasts over Waitangi weekend Many Nelsonians spent the national holiday weekend trying their best to stay cool, as temperatures rocketed into the 30’s. Tasman Bay was packed with people over the weekend swimming, boating, kayaking and even paddle-boarding. The official Metservice high for Nelson was 28.7 degrees Celsius, but unofficial gauges around the city had it into the early-30’s. The hot weather was caused by Cyclone Yasi, that crashed in Queensland last week, and cranked the heat onto most of the South Island, with other centres recording temperatures into the mid-30’s. While many tried to shelter from the heat, some businesses were in their element with one ice-cream vendor saying demand over the weekend was the highest so far this summer. Allan Weldon, owner of Delizio, says his trade was noticeably busier over the weekend. “The sorbet flavours were the most popular, probably because they are the most refreshing.” The fine weather is forecast to continue through until next week, according to Metservice.

Nelson retailers face eftpos cut-off Andrew Board
Hundreds of Nelson businesses have been warned they will have their eftpos cut if they do not upgrade their terminals by the June deadline. As many as 655 Nelson terminals on the Paymark eftpos system need to be upgraded to meet new security standards by June 1, or they will be cut off from the system. Previously, banks have been lenient with busi-
nesses that have not upgraded in time, however they are promising a hard line this time. Local eftpos company Viaduct, says it has been busy upgrading hundreds of businesses in Marlborough, the West Coast and Nelson but there are still many more that need to change, despite Paymark and banks’ repeated warnings. Currently there are three versions of eftpos software in the market place

– 5.1, 5.2 and the new version 6. It is only the 5.1 software that needs to be upgraded. Viaduct Nelson branch manager Ged Svarc says businesses face being stranded if they don’t comply with the deadline and he is warning against businesses doing it at the last minute. “There has been plenty of demand but we expect that to pick up as the cut-off looms, but if people leave it too late there is no guarantee
we will get to everyone in time.” The upgrade has been spurred by security upgrades globally. The new terminals need to be able to read cards with a chip, which lowers the risk of fraud because they could not be copied as easily as the current magnetic strip cards. Of New Zealand’s estimated 120,000 eftpos terminals, 40,000 have old technology,

“I just came past there yesterday and it was blocked off so you have to go driving for bloody miles. It’s just nonsense!”
“I support it. I think it’s a really nice area to have tables and to sit. It’s nice to be outdoors rather than inside a cafe.”
“It doesn’t really affect me. There’s plenty of other places to park and I don’t hang out down there.”
“It already looks like it is and it’d be a really nice little cafe area. Wellington has those sort of areas and maybe they could put more seating out there.”

The upgrade has been timed to be in place before the Rugby World Cup begins in September, when millions will be spent by visitors to the country. Nelson retailer Nicola Gear, of Colourplus Nelson, says she upgraded her terminal last month because she could not afford to be without eftpos. “We just lease our terminal, but when I saw they had to be upgraded I got onto it. Wedding day turns to memorial service for Nelson family Riki Keane was the only Nelson man killed at the Pike River Mine disaster last year. Next week he was due to marry his fiancée, instead his family will host a memorial service for him. Riki’s mother Tracey speaks exclusively to Nelson Weekly reporter Andrew Board. PAINTING THE TOWN: Ruby Roberts, 5, gets her face painted by Meredith Thorpe at the Market Day on Trafalgar St. The packed market was a hit with locals with crowds flooding in to check out the different stalls. What a difference a year makes in Stoke community Andrew Board
Zealand Foundation’s World of Difference programme, which provides the same Gordon Tamihana was given a year to grant to around six other New Zealanders make a difference. each year. A short tour of South Stoke’s House 44 and Last week his year came to an end, a year that has been challenging but “amazing” says Gordon. He applied for the grant at the urging of his wife, left his job and went into the year with the aim of training youth workers who could make a difference in the community. Now House 44 has four qualified youth workers and so much more. Gordon was able to help organise the building of the community gardens, watched as volunteers painted neighbours fences and as the community became more close-knit and productive. “I think the highlight for me, which A YEAR WELL SPENT: Vodafone Foundation winner Gordon Tamihana has just completed a year working excites me quite a bit, was when we at House 44 in Stoke after winning a year’s worth of wages. had a meeting with one of the officers from the Stoke police station and he told us that the crime rate in this area has dropped way down. So he told us whatever was happening in the house was working. That’s one of my big buzzes.” House 44 began in the mid-1990’s after a mother, who lived in the house, lost her son to suicide. She vowed that no other child on the street would see life so bad as to do the same, so she opened her home to the community. A few years later Housing Corp donated it to the community and it’s grown ever since. As part of the grant, Gordon came with $30,000 that was to be used to benefit the charity. With it he was able to buy a container which is used for office space, a new van and other bits and pieces. House 44 manager Jane Worthington says she is thrilled with what has been accomplished over the past year. “Gordon brings with him a natural ability to talk with anyone and everyone and that has brought new benefits. We’ve been lucky to have Gordon, he has set up some great programmes here that will last for some time.” Gordon says the area no longer deserves its old, negative reputation. “If [the TV show] Myth-busters were here, the myth that the area wasn’t nice would be busted – Not true,” he jokes. Gordon is now planning to move to the North Island with his family after more than a decade in Nelson. He wants to continue to help people.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• The Supply vessel Unimar set to sea, the tanker the Kakariki finished her discharge of fuel cargo for the port and departed, the Milburn cement carrier arrived and discharged. Two large fishing vessels took advantage of the slipway for repairs. Four large container vessels, several fishing vessels and a log ship all made for an active port. • Further activity consisted of the Eyebright Mile swim race to Tahunanui Beach on Sunday. I gather the presence of some Orcas may have deterred a few of the Thursday night Nelson Sea Swim swimmers. The Orcas came into the Harbour to feed but were only here briefly. • Good weather and high tides have kept Tahunanui Beach full. Thanks to all the kite surferers and wind surfers that are staying outside the designated swimming areas marked by the black buoys. • Our staff continue to talk to a few about speeding. Please remember if you are within 200m of the shore or 50m of a swimmer the speed is 5knots regardless of the type of craft you navigate. • The high tides and rain have also brought considerable debris into the harbour again. Please take care and keep a proper lookout. Have a great time boating in one of Nature’s prime locations, but keep an eye on the weather.
Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Boarders settle in at Nelson College A new school year means more than just new teachers, classmates and school for some Nelson students – it also means a new home. Described as a sleepover with all of your mates, the year 9 students at Nelson College say they have made an easy transition to the boarding houses. One hundred and ninety three students board at Nelson College and they come from all over the world, but the main area is the West Coast. Director of boarding at the school, Annette Taylor says the school has a great reputation as a boarding school. “We’re the oldest state school in the South Island and we work really
hard to make it their home.” The tortillas for lunch on Thursday were a highlight for the boys, who say the food has been one of the most impressive experiences since moving in. Charlie Rowe came to Nelson College from Tapawera and he says it’s easier to enter as a boarder because of the previous days he spent meeting new friends at Fell House. “You’re not just coming out of the blue and not knowing anyone.” Charlie has been enjoying living so close to the city where he can hang out with mates in the afternoon. For others, the reason behind the move is purely sporting. Jacob Goessi from West-

But in the beginning, students are encouraged to stay at the boarding houses for the first month to get used to the new living situations. The three boarding houses - Rutherford, Fell and Barnicoat - compete against the day houses in a range of activities including an athletics day and swimming sports. LOVE ME: Nelson SPCA is playing match-maker this Valentines Day. The centre is celebrating its annual Second Chance for Love adopt-a-thon on February 12 and 13. It is a great community day out, and a fantastic opportunity to spend time getting to know the animals in the centre, until you find your soul mate – or they find you. Centre manager Donna Walzl, above, says there will be plenty to see during the weekend, including dozen of cats, kittens and puppies ready for a new home. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nelson’s gateway open for inspection We see the ships coming through the Cut, the cranes are part of our skyline and the log piles, fishing boats and fruit trucks remind us what makes Nelson tick – now Nelsonians can find out more about what goes on at Port Nelson at its open day this Sunday. “The port is at the heart of the Nelson community - as our gateway to the world and as a link in the employment of many families,” says Port CEO Martin Byrne. “We’re expecting a lot of interest from people who’d like to see what happens down here from the point where trucks arrive at our gates through to when cargo is loaded on board ship.” Displays of machinery, food stalls and a bouncy castle for kids will be centred in and around Shed #2, from an entry at the Coastal Berth, accessed from near Guyton’s fish shop. Port tours will depart from this area – because of international security around ports, photo ID is required for everyone over 16 years old.

Kindy’s gather for protest Early Childhood Education centres across Nelson banded together last week in a show of solidarity. ECE centres in Nelson have had to increase their fees this month because of government funding cuts. Peaceful protests were held on Friday across the region by centres wanting to raise awareness in the local community. Fees across the Nelson centres have increased from $5 to as much as $35 a week to compensate for the average cut in funding of $39,450 across 25 centres. Adding salt into the wounds, from the start of February incen-
tives for teacher-led centres, where more than 80 per cent of the staff are qualified, will also be reduced. However, this is expected to save $280 million over a four years. Nelson Labour MP Maryan Street claims that the effect of the government’s cuts from the ECE sector will be felt mostly by those who can least afford it. “The vast majority of families who use ECE centres are low to average income households,” she says. “These fee increases come on top of having with the increase in GST and paying the post-Christmas bills for struggle families.”

Torenzo Monopoli is motivated to be a fashion designer so he can be around pretty girls and make lots of money. The six year-old Nayland Primary School student has always loved material, texture and colour and, with help from his parents Jason and Jennifer, will be entering a costume into the Nouveau Design Awards held at the Spring Grove Drill Hall later this week. Jason and Jennifer, owners of local company Orange Dog, say they have no idea where their son got his creative fashion ideas from. “It’s not immediately obvious, but he’s slightly autistic. I don’t know if that’s helped, because he can be quite focused on some things and he definitely thinks different.” Children entering into the costume design section of the show can get parental help with the actual creation of the costume, as long as the child designed it. After printing off some underlays for his son Jason found that Torenzo had designed a very colourful and imaginative costume. “It wasn’t until he started doing these that I thought maybe it was going to be his thing for now, so we started looking at some fashion shows on YouTube and he started getting quite critical. He’s picked up some sort of flair from NOUVEAU AWARDS: Torenzo Monopoli, 6, and his parents somewhere,” says Jason. Torenzo’s parents say it has been Jason and Jennifer, have been working on a costume for the fun being involved in a family Nouveau Design Awards at the Spring Grove Drill Hall later this activity and the outfit is pretty week. Re: Huria Matenga. In seeking to rewrite history, Mr Hippolite appears to ignore official documentation and reports from that period. A closer look at the Delware rescue reveals that it was actually a joint effort. Five Maori were involved. While Julia, James and Robert Martin (Huria, Hemi and Ropata Matenga) were in the water rescuing folk) Elijah (Eraia, who held the rope) and Grey (Koreopa, who tended to the injured) were on shore. When the Government of the day decided to honour the rescuers with gifts, they rewarded all five. However, it was during the presentation speech to Huria Matenga by Mr Goodman M.P.C. that the comparison to Grace Darling - the then recent English Heroine - was first made. It captured the public’s imagination and a legend was born. What a shame that Mr Hippolite appears to want to demean a Maori women’s heroic endeavors and replace her and with a male hero. Respectfully I ask, please don’t tarnish the memory of Huria Matenga. She should be left to rest in peace as the true heroine of the seas she really was. The New Zealand Rugby Union is bringing its trophies to Nelson this Saturday. But, it won’t want to rely on space in the Tasman Rugby Union’s trophy cabinet to house them while in town – it’s rather full. This year the Nelson Bays under 16 and 18 teams won South Island titles and the Tasman Mako under 20 team completed the hat-trick for the top-of-the-south, also winning the South Island crown. All three captains – Mitchell Drummond, Willis Scott and Mitchell Thwaites – are products of Nelson College 1st XV and are a part of the Tasman Academy. This weekend though it will be the silverware of our national teams that will be on display at Trafalgar Park with the NZRU bringing down the Bledsoe Cup, Trinations trophy, women’s world cup, under 20 world
championship trophy and Hillary Shield. NZRU General Manager of Community Rugby and Provincial Unions Brent Anderson says the Trophy Tour, which starts in Nelson and will tour every provincial union, will also include the ultimate prize at this year’s Rugby World Cup – the Webb Ellis Cup. As well as having the trophies on display, there will be fun skill-based activities and entertainment on the day and the children’s rugby mascot Rugger and the Ruggerbees will also be around for entertainment. “We’re encouraging people to visit the road show, have their photo taken with the trophies and try their hand at some of our rugby skills activities,” Brent says. The trophies will be on display this Saturday between 10am and 4pm..

IN BRIEF
New coaches for defending champs
STOKE’S NEW COACHES: Gary Alsop and Jason Hulena are the new coaches of the two-time defending champion Stoke senior rugby team. Photo: Andrew Board. Andrew Board New season, new coaches, but the same goal for the Stoke senior rugby team as it gets set to chase its third championship in as many years. After two successful seasons with Stoke, former coach Bill Liddell left at the end of last season to coach Nelson College’s Press Cup team. The vacancy was filled by Gary Alsop and Jason Hulena who, interestingly enough, did not know each other until the appointment. Gary, a coach of 14 years, took Marist last season but before that was due to help Bill at Stoke, until he had to pull out due to family commitments. Jason coached the Stoke women’s side in 2010 after moving to the region from Thames Valley, where he coached senior rugby for five seasons after a successful
playing career. Despite not knowing each other when the appointment was made late last year, they say they have a similar philosophy and are looking forward to working together. “We’ve sat down and had a few good chats and we are focused on the same goals, which is really good. Rugby is about more than play on the field, we want to get the culture strong as well,” says Jason. Stoke has retained the core of its championship winning team from last season. Although, there are two big holes at hooker and first-five-eight after the departure of Troy Liddell and Kris McNichol. “But we have players that can step into those positions and we are confident by the time the season kicks off we will be in a great position,” says Gary. The Car Company senior rugby compe-
tition kicks off in late March with Stoke in line to face an away game to Huia first up. This year’s competition has been extended to include Riwaka, the sixth side in the league. There were hopes Wanderers would also be able to field a team but they are fading as it has failed to secure key players it needed. Jason says Stoke’s preparation for the season is on track with the club training twice a week and good numbers arriving to the fitness sessions. “We are really happy with the amount of guys we have turning up and no doubt there will be a few more that will roll in keen to play once the fitness sessions die down.” • Any players interested in playing senior rugby at Stoke can come along to training at Greenmedows each Monday from 6pm, or call Jason on 027 462 6504.

SpEEDwAY The Nelson Tigers had to settle for third place over the weekend after a late call resulted in relegation for the stockcar team. The team of Dale Ewers, Brendan Higgins, Jared Gray, Shane Harwood and Brett Nicholls travelled to Palmerston North over the weekend to attempt a hold on their national title. But it wasn’t to be. After winning the semi-final the team were told one of the cars had cut the pole line so they were relegated. “It was very, very disappointing. It ruined the weekend,” says Dale. In the race for third and fourth the team took their frustrations out on the track and came away with the better placing. Dale says the Tigers will certainly be back next year to reclaim their national title. crickET Car Company Stoke/Nayland sealed a comprehensive 95-run win over Nelson rivals Wakatu after defending a strong total of 336. Captain Ryan Edwards top scored for the visitors at Victory Square with a total of 68 off just 45 balls. Peter Younghusband, Nathan Todd and Ben Homan each took three wickets. The future of football in Nelson has arrived. FC Nelson formed late last year to be the biggest football club in the region, combining four proud and successful clubs into one large amalgamated club. Metro, Nelson United, Nelson City and Tahuna joined forces under the FC Nelson umbrella streamlining administration and academy coaching for its youngsters and an opportunity for its top team to push for entry into the Mainland League, involving the top clubs from Canterbury and Nelson. But members of the four clubs involved say the forming
of FC Nelson will not force the contributing Clubs to lose their rich indentity, with teams still playing in their old colours and playing on their traditional home grounds. The benefits of the merger are obvious though, with talented players able to continue playing for their favourite club and have access to top coaching and a pathway to top senior teams. The top senior team will also access players from a wider base to help their push into the Mainland League. The club will have more than a dozen senior men’s teams in three divisions, women’s teams and of course, plenty of
junior teams from midgets all the way up. The merger has the backing of the regions governing body with New Zealand football introducing the ‘Whole of Football’ plan two years ago. The plan encourages mergers to help manage administration, sponsorship and youth development. FC Nelson is currently looking to appoint top people into key roles within the new club, including president, treasurer, secretary and club captain. The Club is looking for a level of professionalism for these exciting roles. Expressions of interest from coaches interested in being

involved with junior teams at all levels are also sought, with the club also keen to appoint a key coach to develop the clubs youth programe. Clive Beaumont, General Manager at Nelson Bays Football says this is a huge move and one which will bring great benefits to the club. “The advantages are there are more people to do the finite number of jobs to be done in one club as opposed to the same number of people being divided amongst four clubs. This will lead to a better experience for all players from first kicks through to senior football and a better experience for all volunteers. NZ Football has introduced the whole of football plan and the new club forms a significant critical mass of players through which Nelson Bays Football can roll this out.” Be a part of the excitement of being a part of the biggest football club in the top-of-the-south by heading along to a registration day for the following contributing Clubs. Nelson footballer makes an impression on ‘Nix ON TARGET: Richmond Athletic star Jordan Yong heads the ball at training. Jordan scored a goal for the Wellington Phoenix reserves last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Nelson’s Jordan Yong has starred for Wellington Phoenix ‘A’, scoring on debut for the club’s reserve team. The Richmond Athletic star got the call up by Wellington Phoenix assistant coach Jonathan Gould for the ASB Challenge match against Canterbury United at Linfield Park last week and did not disappoint, firing the ball past goalkeeper Tom Batty in the 31st minute. The former Norwich City product was an interesting addition to the squad after suspensions to Manny Muscat and Ben Sigmund and constant injuries to squad member Diego Walsh meant the reserves were not able to call upon the handful of first team players who usually play in the midweek ASB Challenge games, with all professionals, instead, traveling to Adelaide. It was Jordon’s first game of the season since a playoff match against Coastal Spirit last September, but Jordan had a busy game despite being short on match-fitness. He freely played alongside his unfamiliar teammates and it wasn’t long before he had put his name on the score sheet. His goal was the only score for the visiting side, with the game finishing 4-1 to Canterbury. He played a full 90 minutes on the left side of the midfield. Nayland College striker Gagame Feni scored for Canterbury. There was plenty of positives from the Phoenix assistant coach, who is a former Scottish international goalkeeper and a Celtic custodian. “We obviously had a reasonable amount of players called up in to the first team so it was a chance for him to play against Canterbury, and he chalked himself a goal, which is good to see from him,” says Jonathan. “He’s very direct when he gets on the ball. He’s got a fantastic strike on him and he’s got a trick.” In October, Richmond manager Rick Gower had arranged for Jordan to train with Welling-
ton. There, he is spent one week with the mixing it with the first team. With a bye in the coinciding round, Jordan got his first opportunity with the reserve side in a practice match against the Phoenix. Jordan also scored back then, but more impressively, he put the ball past All White regular Mark Paston. “That was decent. That in itself was a good opportunity for me. I learnt a lot of things off some of the experienced pros. They were pretty good to me as well,” says Jordan. Jordan originally moved to New Zealand hoping to kickstart his footballing career. After leaving school at just 16 years of age, he joined the Norwich City academy on a two-year scholarship but failed to earn a professional contract. When trials with lower league clubs came to nothing, Jordan decided to move to Richmond with team mate Joe Green. Jordan had a stellar debut season with Richmond, scoring ten goals, but also suffered some niggling injuries which have marred his career thus far. Jordan is now focussing on the season ahead with Richmond before making any plans on his future. While he recently received an email offering a trial with a top Victorian Premier League side, Jordan is one hundred percent committed to the Richmond cause for the coming season as he hopes his performances can lead the club to Mainland Premier League promotion. But with a burning desire to play professional football, he is unsure of what his future holds. Jonathan is confident that he would be a useful acquisition to any ASB Premiership team. “I think he’s definitely good enough. His pedigree, he’s come from Norwich who have a pretty good record of producing youngsters. That alone would say for me that ASB clubs should look at him. He showed that he could benefit a couple of teams around the country.”
Hockey team off to master NZ champs Self-described as team of hockey mums, the Rewa women’s masters team, is ready to clean up the competition at the New Zealand Masters Games this week. Rewa is the oldest club in Nelson but it is the first time they have sent a women’s masters team to the national masters. The team has been hard at work, practicing since October and although they are hoping for a win, they are looking forward to the experience and just want to have a bit of fun at the Whanganui-hosted tournament. Coach Joe McKnight has been putting the team through their paces and the team says it is ready to do battle. At the games, Rewa will be entered in the seven-aside grade and play three matches a day. The team would like to thank sponsors; Harvey Norman, Nelson Nursing Services, Rustix Hair Design, Planscapes and Handy Hire for making the trip possible.
READY TO MASTER NZ: Joe McKnight, coach, Keryn McKay, Sharkie Aitken, Jacinda Beyer-Rieger, Chris Borland, Kelly Shatford, Tracey Bovey, Bonita Savage, Raewyn Evans, Felicity Jordan and Danita Rewa of the Rewa women’s masters team will be heading to Whanganui this Thursday to take on the best of the country in the seven-aside hockey tournament at the New Zealand Masters Games.
