Houses vie for most colourful Screaming Whangamoa House students silenced their peers at the Nelson College for Girls house athletics day last week, with a well choreographed chanting performance. Multiples of bright colours swept through the Saxton Field athletics track, with every one of the 1000 students dressing up in the most incredible way. Maungatapu House, whose members wear blue, were the eventual winners on the day, though Whangamoa stood out when the school congregated in the middle of the field for its chanting competition. Students got the day off academic studies to compete in a number of athletics events and participation was at an enormous high with all students competing, even one on crutches. Costumes varied from superheroes to lions, even a Maitai hotdog made an appearance. The day was also a fundraiser for the Christchurch earthquake appeal, with the sale of sausages and house-coloured armbands raising money. Including a mufti day held earlier in the week, A BIT OF COLOUR: Julia Thompsett, Ellie Bell, Rebecca Scholfield, Megan Hogarth, Nicole Drummond, Maise O’Donnell, Isabella the total amount raised by the school Castle, Caroline Fergusson, Laurien Hemm, Harriet Williamson, Libby Gray, Kayleigh Inglis and Nicole Cant at the Nelson College for Girls house sports day last week. Quake victims provide boost to Nelson economy Fleeing Cantabrians have injected a shot in the arm to Nelson’s economy. The number of people travelling north from earthquake-ravished Christchurch has seen the region’s population swell and that is having a positive impact on Nelson businesses says Uniquely Nelson manager Rowena Richards. “I’m afraid it is very good for us, we don’t like to gain from somebody else’s misfortune but yes, there are quite a few Canta-

Quake Break generates massive response • Still more Nelson volunteers are required for the Rugby World Cup, set to kick off in September. Interviews of about 30-45 minutes will be held between 9am to 6pm at the Trafalgar Park Pavilion, on March 16 and 17 for those keen to help out. Nelson volunteer manager, Ian Littleworth says there are a lot of prospective volunteers who have been interviewed but there is a need for more. Candidates need to bring photo identification such as a current driver’s licence and a photocopy of that ID. Where possible you can preregister online at www.rugbyworldcup.com. • The Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit begins work this week on the installation of a new waste water pipeline across the Waimea Estuary from Monaco to Bells Island. Chairperson Donna Hiser says that it will be a great relief to soon have the new pipeline in place as it is known that joints in the current pipeline are at high risk of failure.
A campaign to give Cantabrians some time out in Nelson has had an overwhelming response. More than 100 homes, bachs and rooms were offered by Nelsonians to Christchurch people through Quake Break, a drive initiated by Nelson Weekly. Publisher Steve Page says he is thrilled so many people have opened their homes, and their hearts, to earthquake-stricken Christchurch. “I’d like to thank the readers for the registrations to date and the
fantastic response. At this stage, and for the next week or two, we will be coordinating the list of local accommodation offered, then by a website, Christchurch folk can go online, match what they want, then contact the locals direct by email.” Steve says Quake Break is in it for the long haul as it appears many Christchurch people are still hesitant to leave as security and repair take first place at home. “But when they are ready we will also be ready. We have already made con-
Driving food to Christchurch Sitting at Trafalgar Park watching the Crusaders at the weekend, Nelson woman Alice Whitehead had the hunger to help those in need. So she came up with an idea to deliver food and other non-perishable items down to
Christchurch. Alice has linked up with a group called Comfort for Christchurch, who will put together and distribute care packages full of canned food, muesli bars, bottled water, biscuits, baby wipes and any
tact with several Christchurch families and we believe there will be a big uptake in a month or so.” Quake Break was announced last week and is in partnership between Nelson and Waimea Weekly, Radio Network, Richmond Mall and a Christchurch newspaper. To register your home or bach for the people of Christchurch who need a break from rebuilding and aftershocks visit www.nelsonweekly.co.nz and follow the links.
other items people can think of that would help those who need it most. Alice is depending on local businesses and local people to donate one or two items. Every little bit will help. She says if people can collect the items in a bag or in boxes then they will organise a group to
pick them up later in the week before driving them down to Christchurch to be distributed. Handy Van Rentals have jumped on board with the concept, donating the use of a van for the trip. For more information email Alice at aliceannewhitehead@ gmail.com.
o2b... “MOBILISED BY GLUCOSAMINE, POWERED BY KRE-ALKALYN!” Hi, I’m Greg Buckett. You may have read about my life long struggle with Arthritis, resulting in an artificial hip and shoulder replacement at age 25, many of you have come into the shop over the past few months and kindly asked how I’m doing nowadays? I am pleased to say that I have just competed in the Kaiteriteri Beach Adventure Race (KBAR), organized by Nathan Fa’avae, and proud to have mixed it up on the same tracks as pro multi-sport world champions Richard and Elina Ussher, Marcel Hagener and Nathan Fa’avae who also competed on the day. Glucosamine Plus gives me the mobility in my joints to enable me to be a viable competitor. Plus Kre-Alkalyn power got me across the KBAR finish line, none worse for wear, in a personal best time. Come on down to the o2b Healthy shop for information about our locally made and rapidly expanding sports range. Painting the town red (and black) Andrew Board An invasion of red and black has swooped into town to show its support for quake-shaken Canterbury and its rugby team and many Nelsonians are promising it won’t be going anywhere soon. More than 10,000 people packed themselves into Trafalgar Park last Friday night to watch the Crusaders topple the Waratahs and those fans will get another opportunity to watch their heroes in action again this Friday night, when the red-andblack machine – actually playing in red and black this week – take on the Brumbies. But the city’s support for the seven-time champions went far deeper than a rugby game. Local man Mark Currie printed 1000 red t-shirts with all proceeds going to the earthquake relief
fund – he all-but sold out and raised $20,000 for the Red Cross appeal. “I’m well pleased with how it went, I would rather have made $20 million but this is a start,” he says. “People were giving me hugs so that was nice.” He says he won’t be printing any more t-shirts for the Brumbies game this Friday but will consider doing some for the Crusaders first game back at AMI stadium in Christchurch. Retailers also got behind the match and the cause, dressing their stores up in red and black last Friday and Uniquely Nelson manager Rowena Richards expects that to last for the rest of this week at least. “Everyone knows how important it is to support Christchurch and retailers got in behind it and it will probably last next week as well.”

Red Devils pad stormed by police Red Devils gang headquarters was stormed by the Armed Offenders Squad last week. Police searched the property, after it received information from the public. Police simultaneously executed search warrants on the homes of two men believed to be the president and secretary of the Red Devils gang. Tasman District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles says the search warrants came as
a result of information from the public that the gang and the properties of its members were involved in drug offences and that the bar at its headquarters was back operating. Superintendent Knowles said police had recovered a number of items of interest and were conducting follow-up enquiries. No arrests have been made yet.

Purple Cake Day saw hundreds flock to the end of Trafalgar St for singing, dancing, a wearable arts show and a celebrity cake making competition. The day was dedicated to the Kenbe La Foundation, a registered charitable trust, to provide educational opportunities for children in need. The foundation established Purple Cake Day as a specific day to celebrate and connect children from around the world. Another five star car from Hyundai Hyundai’s new i20 has gained the maximum five-star safety rating during the latest round of testing by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The i20, one of Hyundai’s newest small cars, was tested under the organisation’s tougher new rating system. The updated range of safety tests are now more stringent and require vehicles to be equipped with the most advanced safety technologies available. Raising the benchmark for the small car class, the i20 five-door model scored exceptionally well in all four categories assessed – adult occupancy, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist – resulting in the highest possible overall rating. Notably the i20 attained 88 per cent in the adult occupant protection tests, including the new whiplash assessment, outscoring the Honda Jazz in this respect, as well as in the other three categories. The car’s active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners and six airbags – front, side and curtain – played a key role in achieving success in the tests for frontal, side barrier and car-to-pole impacts. Another small car, the Suzuki Alto, only achieved a three star rating. Equipped with high levels of standard safety
Advertorial equipment, the i20 scored an impressive six out of a maximum seven points in the safety assist category, receiving top marks for its seatbelt reminder and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). “The i20’s five-star rating is recognition of Hyundai Motor Company’s commitment to providing our customers with world class cars and the highest level of safety.” says Philip Eustace, Executive Director Hyundai Motors New Zealand. “It follows the success of the multi-award winning i30, which also achieved the maximum score, demonstrating that Hyundai is developing cars which bring excellence, value and safety to consumers. Hyundai was the first car maker in New Zealand to include the life saving benefits of electronic stability control as standard across our entire range and we are now seeing other companies follow our lead.” The Hyundai i20 has an extensive list of active and passive safety equipment as standard, including six airbags, active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. The i20 is being assessed for sale in New Zealand with no confirmed launch date as yet.

Nelson Arts Guide revived and looking for artists A $20,000 grant and a team of keen art lovers have brought back to life the Nelson Arts Guide. The guide has been produced bi-annually since 1996 but with the demise of Nelson Bays Arts Marketing nearly two years ago the guide has been left languishing until a new team picked up the project this year. Now local artists to being called on to help fill it. Dancing to a new shoe-fitting tune
The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Four container ships, a cement carrier, a car carrier, fertiliser, seven large fishing vessel movements, several smaller ones, an American super yacht at the coastal berth, a log ship, and a large oil rig tender all made for a busy week. • There were incidents when some smaller vessels decided to race the larger ship through the cut. This has been identified as a major risk to all vessels. Please avoid entering the cut or getting within 500m of the large vessels as they navigate the port. • The police have confirmed there were two serious incidents last week where they were advised of kayakers in difficulty. Once again I wish to pass on this department’s thanks to them and those involved in the retrieval or rescue. Both incidents could have had very different outcomes. • Tahunanui Beach – Last week a fourth black and white buoy has been placed near Rocks Rd/Magazine Point. The black and white buoys clearly mark the designated area from the shore to the buoys, is for swimmers only. Motorised craft, except surf rescue, are not allowed inside the black buoys. • Non motorised craft (kayaks, ding) are only allowed to exit or enter the area in a straight line access way from the Rocks Rd side of the new buoy to the beach in front of the circular car park. • Last week we were also subject to some very strong winds and big seas. It was with surprise that I saw some smaller vessels approach the cut with the clear intention of “going out”. I was very pleased to see them think better of it. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.
Few people think twice about putting on shoes, so spare a thought for Sonia Malpas who is consistently doing so. Sonia, of Atawhai, has recently completed a bronze level certificate towards a diploma in Pointe Shoe Fitting – a system to fit ballet shoes on dancers’ feet. Little is known about the system in New Zealand but it is popular in Europe and the United Kingdom, where its inventor Esther Juon originates from. Now Esther is joining her Nelson apprentice this week to help spread the word. The system encourages support higher up the foot of dancers, not just around the toes. The system is now used in well known ballet companies including the Bolshoi, the Renaissance, the London Ballet and the New Zealand School of Dance. Sonia says she got into ballet shoe fitting after her daughter became involved in ballet and a chance encounter with Esther, who is now living in New Zealand. “She assessed my daughter’s feet and her old pointe shoes. She educated us in a way that never before had we been able to gain access to such information. It made perfect sense to me with my qualifications in biomechanics and as a parent; and it made perfect sense to my daughter as a

Esther and Sonia are hosting a workshop for parents and dancers this Friday, 11 March from 7pm at the Peta Spooner Academy of Dance.

Museum celebrates voyage to Nelson It took about 150 days to sail from England to Nelson in the early 1840’s, in that time close to 11,000 have paid to learn more about their voyage. The Nelson Provincial Museum on Saturday celebrated 150 days since its exhibition Port Nelson Haven Ahoy! opened with a sailing into Nelson Haven of the Steadfast, a replica ship carrying a local family, representing those who migrated to Nelson. The exhibition has been a runaway success since it opened last October and Museum chief executive Peter Millward says the sailing of the Steadfast was the perfect way to
celebrate. “It was beautiful, the plan from the start was to celebrate 150 days with this idea and it fell into place perfectly.” Once the Blackham family made it to shore they were driven to the Museum on a horse and cart. Students from Nayland College’s drama class also took part in the day. Peter says he is expecting another rush of people to visit the exhibition before it closes in April. “Nelsonians are very proud of their history and the stories that have come out since the exhibition started has been great. We have had a lot of families through whose fore- MODERN BACKDROP: Dave Walker leads the Blackham family and five Nayland College drama students from Wakefield Quay to the Nelson Provincial Museum. Mayoral Challenge opens new underpass More than 75 keen cyclists braved the morning rain and rode in the annual Bikewise Mayoral Challenge, which officially opened the Orphanage Creek underpass, in Stoke. Participating riders got a first hand experience of the new underpass, which was opened by city councillor Paul Matheson. Riders had the option of three routes: the 3km Family route, the 11km easy route and the 26km Tearfund poverty cycle route. NCC Transport and Road Safety advisor Marg Parfitt says the highlight was the young boy who won a brand new bike. “He was delighted as he had outgrown his old bike and was riding his Dad’s old clanger,” says Marg. He rode his new bike at the Weetbix Tryathlon Yvonne Ferguson cycles along the railway reon Sunday. serve on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo

CLASSIC MINI: Stoke’s Lance Adams and his 1972 Austin Mini weren’t put off by the threat of rain and turned up at the classic car show at the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond on Sunday. Lance’s 1310cc vehicle was purchased over six years ago but it sat in his garage for a long time and has only been on the road since October. Photo: Teresa Hattan.
Motorcycle poker run ‘welcomes all’ Riders and drivers from all walks of life are encouraged to join the ninth annual Nelson Bays Poker Run, say organisers. Interest in the fundraiser is already strong with many bikes coming from Nelson and out of town. Last year more than 120 people attended. “Persons from all walks of life, from the hard out bikers to whoever, with all makes of motorcycles are welcome. It’s just a fun day out for everyone to have a good time, meet new friends and an opportunity to generate something to go back into the community,” says organiser Mark. In the past the run has raised thousands for St John with proceeds this year going to MediMax, giving something back to a group that is in-
volved with helping motorcyclists in the Nelson region. The run has several stops throughout the Nelson Bays region with riders getting a poker hand at each stop, the overall winner is set to take home $1000, with $500 and $250 for second and third respectively, along with several other prizes. Hot-rods and classic cars are also welcome to join the run, as they have in previous years. “The day is really neat, there is no tension at all and the riders are supportive of each other, in fact there hasn’t been an incident or accident to date and we want to keep that going,” says Mark. Registration is between 10am and 12noon at Isel Park in Stoke this Saturday, March 12.

Not a franchise…Not a nationally owned company………. A local family business… with local roots…it just means more. Many locals will remember Hubber’s Furnishing and their store on Halifax St, and may wonder what exactly happened to them. Well, here’s their story… Gerald and Eileen Beattie established their furnishing business in 1993 and quickly built a reputation as a market leader in their field providing quality soft furnishings and flooring. For many years they operated from their Halifax St premises but in 2008 they were offered an opportunity they couldn’t turn down. Gerald joined the Flooring Xtra buying group, subsequently expanding the company into something bigger and better, some might say something Xtra! By joining New Zealand’s largest buying group, Hubber’s were able to access a more extensive range of product at the most competitive prices, while remaining totally locally owned and operated. Because Gerald still makes all of the business decisions he has been able to maintain the high standards that were an integral part of their business, ensuring they offered exceptional quality products backed by outstanding service, and that their prices were the best around. To display the larger product range bigger premises were required and relocating to their new showroom in the Raeward Fresh Complex in Richmond meant they were still close to Nelson residents, but also

Get ready for some brilliant speedway action as the annual Stock Shock hits town this weekend. The event, now in its fourth year, is slightly different to last year’s show though. Due to circumstances beyond their control, Nelson Speedway has had to reduce the normal two nights of action down to one. “We usually get a lot of entries from north and south but this year unfortunately for us two weeks ago the North Island champs got put over top of this weekend, which has meant the North Island vehicles can’t come now,” says Nelson Speedway president Kris Carpenter. “That compounded with the earthquake in Christchurch and subsequent moving of the Crusaders games and one of them being on the Friday meant that we looked at it and thought people were having to make a choice and we didn’t want them to have to do that, so we thought we would take one day out of the equation, still go with the Saturday and hope that we get the support for it.” This Saturday still promises to be a great sporting event for the whole family with lots of action on the track to keep everyone entertained. Stock Shock has attracted a new sponsor this year, Brian Stanaway Roading Ltd. “They picked up the sponsorship after last year’s sponsor decided not to continue with it. He’s new this year and he’s been really good about it and been really supportive,” Aniseed Valley Rd, RD1, Richmond says Kris. Kris says the crowd can expect great entertainment, as the night will be run in a three heat format with points being accumulated over three heats. The Woody - 027 485 9757 association is also putting up performance money Brendan Higgins - 027 457 6753 Fax (03) 544 4364 woody@waterwell.co.nz for the competitors, so they will all be vying for that.

“Because we haven’t had to pay the travel money for the North Islanders, the sponsorship money has now been freed up so there will be prizes for performance and the most action kind of stuff. Kris says this will mix things up a bit as the money available to the competitors is sure to create more action. The main event on the night is the stock cars, but other classes will be supporting this category. Gates open at 6pm with racing starting at 7pm. Gate prices have remained the same at $15 for adults, $7 for children or $30 for a family. Next year Kris says the event will pick back up to two days again.

Alex Jordon accepts running scholarship at top US college Phillip Rollo The man who coached Olympic champion Michael Johnson to the fastest 400 meter time of all time has his sights set on a new global superstar, Nelson’s Alex Jordan. Alex confirmed during the week that he will be taking up a four year scholarship worth more than $210,000 with the most prestigious track and field college on the planet, Baylor University - home to super-coach Clyde Hart. The 18 year-old currently holds the fastest 400m time in New Zealand this season and has been sought after by more than 16 colleges throughout the United States before verbally confirming the scholarship at Baylor, where he will join a legacy of world beaters. Clyde’s pupils have won Olympic gold medals in the 400 meters in three straight Olympic Games with Jeremy Wariner winning the event in 2004 and Michael capturing Olympic gold in 1996 and 2000. He has coached eight Olympians who have won a total of nine Olympic gold medals, one silver and two bronze. Clyde, along with head-coach Todd Harbour, has already set Alex the target of breaking the New Zealand men’s 400m record in his freshman year. “We’ve talked about that. The New Zealand record is 46.09 seconds for seniors and my goal is to eclipse that record. If I didn’t do that in the next couple of years I’d be pretty disappointed,” says Alex.
Alex will attend the university in Waco, Texas and could leave as early as August. He is planning to study kinesiology for four years. Alex says the biggest drawcard was the history of the 4x400 meter relay team, which has won 18 national championships, the most in collegiate history for that event. “It excites me. Running with a crowd of 30,000 thousand people. It’s the standard you want to be at. That was the biggest pull, the coaches and that are great, but I want to put on that green and gold singlet [of Baylor], and then you know it’s game time.” The former Nayland College student has relocated back to the region for the rest of the year, after severe damage closed his training facilities in Christchurch. The closure of the QEII athletics track means Alex will now train in Nelson and says he is keen to race at any opportunity throughout the rest of the season. While in Nelson, Alex will study two papers at NMIT on a Prime Minister’s scholarship and train according to his Baylor training program. There is a strong possibility that the coming New Zealand Track and Field Championship in Dunedin will be Alex’s last national championship for four years. So he is going to run in the senior men’s division and aim for the New Zealand title in both 400m and 200m as well as target the Men 19 record. “I like winning. But to win I’m going to have to run a fast time.”
