SPCA appeal to end with open day Sassey and Bolt are two puppies that love attention. This Saturday they, along with all the other animals at the Nelson SPCA, will be two very happy animals as they will get plenty of attention at the centres annual open day. The open day is the grand finale to the organisation’s appeal week and centre manager Donna Walzl says it will be

a day for the whole family to come along and check out the local SPCA. “There will be plenty going on so it should be a great day; we will have rides for children, face painting and other fun stuff.” The day will also be the grand opening for the centre’s newly-built aviary, re-laid shop and will even feature a blue-tongued lizard.

The open day will also be an opportunity for people to adopt animals. Among them are Sassey and Bolt, four kittens, several dogs and birds. Everyone is welcome to attend the open day this Saturday from 10am to 2pm. To donate money for the appeal week, keep an eye out for collectors in Nelson, Stoke and Richmond or pop into the SPCA.

• Nelson City Council is patting itself on the back after processing 100 percent of Resource Consents and Land Information Memorandums last month, a “milestone achievement” it says. Manager of Resource Consents, Mandy Bishop, says 32 non notified consents and 40 LIMS were processed in October, with days to spare under the Resource Management Act guidelines. The non-notified consents were completed in an average of 13 days and the LIMS in four days, both within a 10 day requirement.

The line up for Opera in the Park has yet to be announced. However, a consideration in yesterday’s decision was the $22,000 which would have had to be paid to some performers already committed to the event, if it failed to go ahead. Tickets will go on sale next month.

Stoke, NZ’s top town? Stoke leads a nationwide competition as New Zealand’s best town. But can it stay in the lead? Emma McCashin of McCashin’s Brewery, which brews Stoke beer, thinks so. “Why not, Stoke is a great town, it has a huge dynamic of people and it also has a great beer named after it,” she joked. The competition is part of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Best Towns and Cities Awards for 2010. This online-only award will be given to the community, town or city that obtains the most votes, signaling they’re the best place to be in New Zealand. Stoke had 129 votes at lunchtime on Monday, 84 votes ahead of its nearest rival, Christchurch. Nelson has just three votes.

Stoke School principal Peter Mitchener says the school has a real focus on community and it was great to see other parts of the town show that same pride. Stoke/Nayland cricket captain Ryan Edwards also alluded to Stoke’s sporting success over recent years. “The cricket team is the three-time defending champions, the rugby team has won the past two titles and we have so many great facilities like Saxton Field right here in Stoke.” Everyone that votes in the Kiwi’s Choice Award goes into the draw to win $300 worth of grocery vouchers from New World and Four Square supermarkets. Buzz around eDay, tonnes collected Almost 60 tonnes of old computers, cellphones and various other electronics were collected in Stoke on ‘eDay’. eDay’s aim was to increase community awareness of the benefits of recycling electronic equipment, and offer more sustainable options than burying it in landfill. “They contain valuable minerals and metals that we shouldn’t be mining the ground for, we should be mining our old computers,” says co-ordinator Karen Driver. The day was hugely successful, but the next goal is for a permanent drop off point rather than just the one occasion. “There’s a nationwide solution that we are working on, and it should be in place mid next year at the latest.”

With a collective time of 63 years served, it should have come as no surprise that Nelson duo of Shirley McBurney and Jeanne Taylor would be honoured with a long service award. But it was still a thrill for the Save the Children stalwarts. Jeanne received her pin last year at the national AGM in Wellington, while Shirley was presented with hers at the start of the month. Jeanne is retiring from the committee of the Save the Children’s Nelson branch after 31 years and says it has been a big part of her life. “When I first arrived in Nelson I didn’t know anyone and needed something to do. It’s a good cause to work for and it’s been a great 30 years.” Shirley couldn’t attend the national AGM due to a prior commitment so was presented the pin at the Nelson AGM by CEO Liz Gibbs. Shirley, who has volunteered in the Save the Children shop for 32 years, says it was nice to be acknowledged but wasn’t keen on being the centre of attention. “Fortunately it was much more bearable because it was in front of people I knew in Nelson. But it was a bit overwhelming, I always enjoy seeing other people get recognition but when it comes to yourself, it can be a little bit embarrassing.” Both say the knowledge that they were helping children was the motivation behind their long service. “I had lived in Africa, so saw firsthand the need for charities like this. “That is the best part, Honoured for long service in the Save the Children charity are Shirley knowing that you are helping.” McBurney, left, and Jeanne Taylor. Primary kids off to be video stars Students of some Nelson primary schools will have the opportunity to create their own masterpiece at the first ever Kidz Cannes Film Festival, starting today. Primary school pupils from Nayland, Tahunanui, Birchwood, Stoke, Enner Glynn and Nelson Christian Academy are taking part in the project at Tahunanui School today, Wednesday and Thursday. Kellie McRobert of Nayland Primary says the workshop is a great way to get kids creating in a new environment. “The older kids are split into teams of five with

students from different schools and the younger ones in teams of seven. They have to create a 30 second clip using laptops, cameras and their imagination.” It is a joint initiative of the Whakatu cluster, to which all the participating schools belong. Kellie says the hope is that the film festival will grow over the next few years to include other Nelson schools and eventually other South Island schools. “But at the moment we want to get these children into it and bringing some of that excitment back to their schools.”

Tahunanui community steps up at fun day Tahunanui was a hive of activity on Sunday as it hosted its community family fun day – Stepping out in Tahunanui. Around 500 people took part in the day which encouraged people to try different sports and activities around the suburb including golf, netball, Tai Chi, bowls, indoor bowls and even Zumba. The day ended with various community groups demonstrating what they do and a draw for those that participated, at Burrell Park. Prizes were courtesy of Tahunanui businesses. Organiser Trish Duthie, of the Tahuanui Community Centre, says she was overwhelmed with the support on the day. “It has been just excellent, better than I had planned for. I’m really, really happy Tahuna has embraced the day and we can look forward to doing it all again next year now.” The day was entirely free and was held with support of Tahunanui businesses, clubs and people says Trish. Italian exchange full of new adventures

Exchanging cultures: Margherita Gasparinetti, 17, of Italy, with her host sister Karamea Fossett, 17. Both girls attend Nelson College for Girls. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson College for Girls student Karamea Fossett, 17, knows what it’s like to welcome a new member to the family, she’s done it three times now. But next year it will be her turn to be the newbe in a forgein country. Karamea is travelling to Belguim next August as part of the AFS student exchange programme. She says she is excited about heading to a new country, but for now is playing host to Italian exchange student Margherita Gasparinetti, 17, from Treviso, near Venice. Margherita, also studying at Nelson College for Girls, says she is enjoying life in Nelson, a far cry from what she is used to. “It is so different, the town is different, like the houses are very different.” Margherita is the third exchange student the Fossett family has had in the past few years. Last year they hosted a girl from Costa Rica and earlier this year, one from Finland. Karamea says it was an adjustment at first but she enjoys having an addition to the family. “When we first got our student last year it was kinda weird but when she left it, it felt like the house was empty, they become part of the family. The best part of having them here is that we get a new family in a differnt country and learn about their culture. It teaches me to put myself out there as well and make all sorts of random friends.” Margherita says the longest she was away from home before the exchange was just a few weeks, but two months into her year in Nelson she is yet to get homesick. “I really love it here, it’s so nice so no, I haven’t got homesick.” She says she has already had a couple of firsts in New Zealand, like kayaking, tramping and even has a river clean up planned with other exchange students in the region later this month. The girls are unanimous that the experience is enjoyable. “It is fun, it’s nice to share your country and learn something new,” says Karamea. To enquire about hosting an exchange student call Suzy on 547 7845 or visit www.afs.org.nz.

Birchwood gala a smashing success The sun shone brightly on Birchwood Primary School, as crowds in their hundreds flocked to the gala. Activities were spread throughout the whole school, but the most popular event was being able to smash two old cars with a selection of hammers. And it did not take long before the front bumper came off. “It was going really well. Especially for the boys,” says board of trustees member Danielle Hampson. Plenty of kids kept coming back for seconds to an event that proved to be quite a hit. As well as the smashing cars, the white elephant was popular, along with the mini ferris wheel, horse rides, go-karts, a challenge course race between the board of trustees and the Nelson Giants, and the numerous quality food stalls. Danielle says they are rapt with the success of the day. “It’s fantastic, absolutely brilliant.” The school gala only occurs every three years and the funds for this year’s event will go towards a new playground for the junior syndicate.

William Schwass hammers away at one of the old cars ready to be ruined at the Birchwood School gala.

They each received their awards at a dessert evening at Nick Smith’s meeting room in Annesbrook last Monday night. Next week we profile another Neighbour of the Year.

• A busy week this week for the Port and the Harbour Master. A new tanker brought fuel and petrol to the port. Three Container vessels, several fishing vessels, the cement ship and the Anatoki fertiliser vessel all kept the resources occupied. • The Harbour Masters’ vessel was on the water last week and spoke to many people about water safety. Congratulations and thank you to all for your co-operation and safety awareness. • A few kayakers and small boat gave cause for concern when sighted close to the stern or bow of a large container vessel alongside the wharf. Please remember to keep clear of all commercial vessels by at least 50m. You will not know if the vessel is preparing to depart and you need to maintain a safe distance from propeller wash and bow movement.

Blackwood St resident Bill Higgins reckons if he won lotto he wouldn’t move anywhere, “this is the best street I’ve ever lived on”. It appears his neighbours rather like having him around as well. Bill won the Good Neighbour of the Year award for Tahunanui at a ceremony last week, after he was nominated by other residents on his street. He was one of four winners Nelson Weekly will be profiling over the next month. Bill’s story of helping four widows that live on the street, touched a chord with the judging committee, lead by Neighbourhood Support coordinator, and awards organiser, Kim MacDonald. He modestly says his efforts to be a great neighbour aren’t much, but he likes to help out where he can. “They always know that if they need a hand to sing out, I quite like helping other people.” Bill changes light bulbs, helps with plumbing, water blasts fences, lifts furniture, drives people to do their shopping, helps put lids on neighbours home distillery’s, but the most touching says Kim, was when a neighbour died while on the toilet. “Bill stayed with him and held him until someone arrived. It’s that sort of neighbour we could all use. Keep up the good work Bill.” Receiving the award in front of a crowd of people was a “bit embarrassing” for the former truck and bus driver, but he says it was nice to get the acknowledgment. “I didn’t know I was going to have to get up in front of a whole bloody crowd of people, and then they kept going on about all

Living with Type 2 Diabetes By Mike Milstein As we age we all deal with chronic issues. But, what happens if you also have to deal with something like diabetes? According to Roz Loasby, who has successfully met the challenge of living with Type 2 Diabetes, it’s about being disciplined and positive. Roz was diagnosed as a border line Type 2 diabetic in 2007. The doctors tried medication, but further tests in 2008 classified her as a Type 2 diabetic. Roz contacted the Nelson office of the New Zealand Diabetes Association, where she met Margaret Jamison, who gave her lots of reading material to help her learn as much as she could about Type 2 diabetes. She then went on a six week course, which met once a week, where instructors explained “why you have diabetes, what you can and shouldn’t eat and what isn’t, and what help is available in the community. They give you wonderful insights. It’s really worth going on for anyone having Type 2 adult onset diabetes.” Whereas Type 1 diabetes occurs when “your body doesn’t produce enough insulin to keep you active or provide the energy you need, Type 2 diabetes is triggered when your cholesterol level is high and you are probably overweight. You produce insulin but your diet keeps the diabetes going so you have to change your diet. That’s the most important factor. My sugar and cholesterol levels were high. I needed to get them down and, generally, get healthier.” “Once in the system you are monitored by your doctor, which is excellent. I get called in every three months to monitor my health, every six months the doctor checks my blood and sugar levels, and I get a full check up once a year.” Roz, who is 68, says “I didn’t think

I was “doing too much wrong on my diet until my cholesterol level increased and my blood sugar needed monitoring.” In part, she thinks, “it’s an ageing thing. People get to my age and are often diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Regarding the cholesterol issue this is also genetic on my part because my father had it, my sister has it, and I have to monitor my cholesterol level and reduce it through diet and exercise.” It’s straightforward. “Medication is necessary to get the cholesterol down. You also need to watch your diet. Roz had breast cancer, which she is cleared of now, prior to being diagnosed with diabetes. When asked how she has gotten these challenges, her answer is “my faith, my family, and the community. People here in Nelson have helped me through the breast cancer as well as being there for me now.” Roz believes it is important to be positive and have goals. “Being positive is the main thing. I encourage people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes to look at it in a positive manner. There is nothing to be frightened of. Just get all the information you can, take the advice that people give you. Life is much easier if you do. I’ve embraced it and it has made a difference in my life. My cholesterol is down, my weight is down, I enjoy exercise, and I’ve met a lot of people who have become friends in the process.” Note: This article summarizes an interview aired by Fresh FM that was conducted by Dr. Annie Henry and sponsored by Age Concern, Nelson. If you want to share your thoughts with the Conscious Ageing Network or wish to know when interviews will be aired and when CAN articles will appear send an email to agewell@ihug.co.nz.

A unique aspect of Stonehurst Farm Agistment is the support and encouragement that is available. Whether you’re highly experienced or just getting into riding you will associate with like minded horse owners. There is a club culture developing that creates a lot of opportunities for fun, learning and good times with your horse. Part of this diversification means the trek horses and associated equipment will be auctioned

by PGG Wrightson. The sale will be held at the Haycock Rd property on Saturday the 27th of November starting at 1 pm. “It will be really sad to see these much loved horses sold but what we are hopeful for is that local folk will buy the horses and keep them here at our new facility” says Suzanne. Iconic hanging baskets keep Nelmac staff on their toes Mike Gaffa knows how much Nelson’s hanging baskets are loved. He is in charge of doing 800 of them each summer to hang on the streets around the CBD. He speaks with Nelson Weekly about a typical day for him in our fortnightly series, Your People At Work. I start at 7:30am, what we do in the morning is we get the whole team together and have a 15-20minute meeting so everyone is sort of on the same page and everyone knows what tasks they have to do for the day. I have also another person who’s under me, Bruce, who I give tasks, so he can put it on the ground so it works smoothly. Our prioritised job is the hanging baskets, so I grab the apprentice and we go and do some work on those. We are running this basket project for the council, but it’s actually a community initiative on the council’s side of things to bring volunteers in to give people a chance to be a part of the baskets. It’s a great community project that’s been going on for ten years now. They love it. And a lot of people that come here go home and start making their own hanging baskets. I started choosing the upcoming varieties of flowers for the baskets in May, two or three of us sat down and nut out what was successful the year before, what new varieties there are, what we think we do well, what things of interest we might add to the basket. On the 1st of July I’m sowing the seed, and then we pick it all out and have the flowers all ready for the second week of October for the volunteers to come make

Mike Gaffa of Nelmac is in charge of getting our hanging baskets up this summer. up the baskets. The team here can vary really. Paid Nelmac staff, there are only four of us on site. We also hire a couple of temps at peak periods throughout the year. And we have numerous amounts of community service and volunteer groups that come through. So it can be five people in a day or it can be 12-15. Six hund r e d and fifty baskets go up in town. We used to spray them in the early days. But we

thought there would be problems with the public complaining so we came up with an idea that we do a crop rotation, so we grow an extra 200 baskets, so we would have used 850 in the whole project. Any vandalism and we replace it with a new basket as well. About 20-30 baskets a year are lost to vandalism, which is pretty small compared to the whole project. People want them up there, they look forward to them coming out in summer time. People who travel New Zealand say our baskets are the best. Tourists are amazed by our city because we have so many baskets in such a small area. It’s great for Nelson and it’s become quite iconic. But it’s not all baskets for me. I can be pulled away with phone calls, admin sort of stuff. Everyone wants an answer from me usually. Anyone coming on site wants to see me, so I can be doing 101 different things in a different morning with-

out being specific in what I do. There’s water quality issues through streams and stuff, so people are wanting to put plants through there and bring the water quality back up. That’s where we come in to choose the right type of plants. We’re into restorations of esterarys and sand dunes. Watering on a day like today is high priority, so making sure we get round, do the watering rounds. I started as an apprentice and worked 23 years with the council and now we’ve been two years with Nelmac, but on the same site. It’s a job I’m passionate about, which gives me great reward. I wouldn’t say it’s hard. But it can be quite demanding at times. I play sport, I do gardening when I get home. I’m a pretty outdoorsy type of person anyway. It’s not a big issue if it rains. It’s predominately inside and outside work, so on a rainy day we just continue on. The last kind of jobs for the day are just making sure everything is watered because that’s a big thing. We might have to make sure the irrigation is set up for the night, close down glass houses or open them up. Make sure the machinery is put away. Might be a little bit of paperwork that I have to tie up for the end of the day, I’m supposed to finish at 4pm, but it’s more like 4.30-5pm, as ya do. One thing in our favour here in Nelson is our amazing climate. It gives us the opportunity to grow a wide range of plants. We’ll just keep expanding the nursery really. Once you’re in it, you’re in for life. For me that’s great. There will always be a demand. We’re all about making things happen really. If there’s a problem, we’re out finding a solution to fix the problem. I’ve probably produced a million trees for this city and the hanging baskets for ten years, it’s thoroughly rewarding.

Nelson rowers take on world’s best Two Nelson rowers took to the water in the World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, near Hamilton, last week. Former Nayland College student Ian Seymour and former Nelson College for Girls pupil Robyn Munro both rowed in the New Zealand eights, the glamour event of the sport. Ian, who began his career as a single sculler because he was the only rower at Nayland, progressed to doubles, fours and eights. He was a part of a men’s team that exceeded expectations making

the final against a vaunted lineup including eventual champions Germany and hot favourites Great Britain. New Zealand finished fifth, above the highly ranked United States in Sunday’s final. Robyn raced in the women’s eight which qualified for the B final, where it finished second. Nelson rowing coach Tim Babbage says it was exciting to see two locals on the world stage. “It hasn’t happened since the early ‘90’s and shows that our programme is working. The racing was amazing.”

IN BRIEF FooTbAll Gagame Feni got an early taste of ASB Premiership football when he came on for Canterbury United in their opening match against Team Wellington. It didn’t take long for the young Solomon to get amongst the action, breaking down the left hand flank and setting up the second goal. Gagame threatened throughout the match, hitting the crossbar before being subbed off

in the 4-2 victory. Billy Scott and Alex Ridsdale started for the Canterbury Youth team in their 3-1 loss to Wellington. Coey Turipa came on in the second half. While Joel Wiechern played at centre-back for Wellington. SporTS AwArDS International track star Hazel Bowering-Scott claimed the major award at the Nelson College for

Girls sports awards, the Rose Bowl, for national excellence in sport. Hazel earns the prized trophy after a stellar year on the track, highlighted by representing New Zealand at the Youth Olympics in Singapore. The underwater hockey team claimed the Annette Taylor Trophy for best team performance, after finishing second at nationals.

Anna Driver is the Intermediate-aged champion of Nelson Bays tennis after beating Emma Kynaston 6-2, 6-2 in last week’s final at Nelson Lawns. The thirteen year-old Nelson Intermediate student had a breeze of a final compared to Brittany Pellowe from Enner Glynn School in the year 5 and 6 tournament. Brittany won the first set in the Primary School Tournament against Holly Mace, of Hampden St School, in a tie-breaker, 8-6. Holly fought back to win the second set, also in a tie-breaker, 8-6 and the two girls battled it out in a super tie-break third set which was finally taken out by Brittany, 10-8. In the boys competition at the Tasman Tennis Centre in Richmond Ben Hazlett beat Nic Clark to take out the primary competition 6-1,6-0. In the intermediate grade Sam Edens of Waimea Intermediate beat Cameron Thomas of Broadgreen, 6-2, 6-1. The Plate final was won by Nicholas Mellor of Nelson College prep over Max Winterton of Broadgreen 6-0, 6-1. Record entries were received for the annual tournaments with 128 children from around the region participating. The number of participants were up 30 percent on last year and have doubled in the past two years says Lynnie Nevin of Nelson Bays Tennis.

The Nelson Motorcycle Club is gearing up for another hot summer of motorbike action in 2010/11. From the gnarly supercross action at the Rat Track to the high speed adrenaline of the Port Nelson Street Races, NMCC is there in the thick of it.

NMCC is the oldest affiliated motor cycle club in New Zealand, founded in 1908. There are currently more than 300 local members and 10 life members in the Club. Club committee member Heath Botica says there’s a lot of misconceptions from some of the public, about the club and its purpose. “They’re not a bunch of hoons out to disturb the neighbours and blat around making noise. These men and women of all ages and backgrounds are sportspeople, who feel passionate about what they do.” The club works hard to make an event a real community affair and will rotate its activities around the community. “We don’t want to out-stay our welcome and are also conscious of not taking advantage of the generosity of the land owners who kindly offer property for riding. It is becoming more and more difficult to find locations suitable, as many rural areas are being built up.” While there are a number of events being run, not all are affiliated with the club. We want to raise public awareness that the club has a responsibility to the community and we don’t wish to inconvenience people, we just get out there with friends and family, to enjoy our sport. Riding in a controlled environment a great opportunity for kids to get out and burn up energy, get that adrenalin rush while obeying the rules. It gives them a safe

environment where there are some strict regulations, which come down from the national level. It teaches the kids that there are consequences of not following the rules - and also teaches them how to deal with speed, thinking ahead and controlling a vehicle says Heath. “If some of the ‘boy racers’ out there were into motor sport, they wouldn’t be tearing up the streets at night.” The next big event the club is hosting is the Morley Honda Beach races at Rabbit Island on 3 January, Endurocross at Richmond Showground’s on 6 January and the Supercross at the Rat Track on 9 and 10 January (which will feature Josh Coppins), plus many more fantastic events. For more information on the club or event details visit them at www.nmcc.org.nz.

Stoke aiming to win yet another championship Accessman Stoke don’t have too much room left in its trophy cabinet after winning the Nelson Bays division one rugby title for the past two years and the seven’s tournament last year, but the club’s seven’s coach Ant Holder insists there is room for one more. “We’d like to defend it and that’s what we’re aiming for, but also to introduce a

few of the young guys to the club.” The Turf Hotel Tasman ClubSeven’s Tournament is being played this Saturday at Trafalgar Park with teams coming from most of the major rugby clubs in the region. The first game kicks off at 9.50am and the tournament will go until 7pm that night.

Ten teams have registered including two from Stoke, Nelson, Marist, Riwaka, Huia, Tapawera, Rangers, Waimea Old Boys and Waitohi from Picton. Ant says the Stoke teams have been training for several weeks and he is looking forward to seeing how the teams go. Several Mako’s will also take part in the tournament.

Welcome again to your regular golf updates, news and tips from Craig and Jonti at Sharpies Golf Nelson. It’s a great time of year to be playing with lots of growth and plenty of events on. A reminder to local golfers that haven’t already entered the Kina Open that entries close very soon and I know that this year they have some amazing prizes on offer like a round of golf at the beautiful Cape Kidnappers with free flights to get you there Many courses are about to start if they haven’t already their twilight business house competitions during the week, so give your local course a call to get involved. Tip of the week: To hit it high and launch your golf ball, tee the ball high and just inside your left foot, angle your shoulders away from the target and place about 60% of your weight on your right foot. This “lean-back” setup creates the perfect conditions for you to hit the ball on a slightly ascending angle so you catch the ball on the top of your club’s face. When you’re playing a shot downwind or are playing a soft golf course, a higher trajectory will help you maximize your distance. Learn to launch it high and you’ll see huge dividends Sharpies special of the week: Footjoy shoes now in stock, and the new summer range of Loft8 clothing has arrived.. Nayland celebrates its top sporting stars Phillip Rollo Two record breaking team performances headlined the Nayland College sports prize giving, with national runners-up the 1st XI football team edging the fourth placed Senior A Basketball team to take the prestigious Howat Cup for excellence in sport and the Andrew Trophy for outstanding team performance. After thrashing former champions Mt Albert Grammar 4-1 on route to the New Zealand Secondary Schools Premier Football Championship final, the 1st XI justified selection over the Nayland boy’s best ever basketball result. “For basketball and football to achieve what they did on a national level, for a co-ed school from the South Island provincial region, it was just outstanding,” says sports director Brendan Crichton.

“It’s going to be hard to replicate that.” After two consecutive years of shared individual winners, it was the team performances which dominated the sporting accolades. “You look at last year with Alex Jordan and Coey Turipa, they were on the world stage, where we probably haven’t had that as much this year for various reasons.” While the calibre of individual performances were still high at a national level, it was the history breaking feats that stood out. “The individual achievements happen on a regular basis, but for a team sport to get to a national final, that has only happened three times in the schools history of like 45 years.” The co-educational school proved that they can match it with the best. “We’re a strong sporting school. The opportunities at Nayland are exactly the same as any other

school in Nelson.” The Nayland College trophy for outstanding junior team performance was even harder to split, with the boys and girls volleyball teams sharing the award with the boys basketball team after all three finished third in the South Island. Other major award winners on the night were referee Jamie Hoult who took home the Gowan’s Trophy for outstanding contribution to sport. The Higginson Cup for sportsmanship was shared by footballers Adam Smith and Phoebe Evans. Senior A Basketball captain Aaron Dempster won the D’Arcy Cup for all round sportsman. Julia Hodgson received the Monica Robinson Cup for best all round sportswoman. While Angus Riley and Sara Reidie won the Olley Cup for all round junior sportsman and the Keeper Cup for all round junior sportswoman respectively.

Golf tournament a hit with AMP On Friday, AMP Powerhouse Financial Services hosted their eagerly awaited regional golf tournament, at the beautiful Greenacres Golf Course, located on Best Island. The tournament has been running for over 20 years and was a chance for this local insurance advisory business to treat over 100 of their most loyal clients to a round of golf. This year’s Stableford competition was hotly contested, with many fantastic prizes on offer. Most prizes were sourced locally, with one great local business, Sharpies Golf, stepping up to the plate and donating many of them. First and second prizes were sponsored by AMP, and marked the launch of their new first prize, entry into the AMP chAMPionship National Golf Tournament. This year’s first prize winner, Warren Tilley, received the all expenses paid trip to Millbrook Resort in Queenstown, for himself and his wife Carol,

next January. Once there, he will participate in the AMP chAMPionship National Golf Tournament, representing our region and battling it out for AMP’s national title. Another winner on the day was local charity, The Fifeshire Foundation, who was the recipient of a generous donation as a result of a raffle, held on the day. With AMP Powerhouse matching the amount raised, proceeds topped $1000. The day was wrapped up with the launch of, “The John Towns Cup”. The cup will be awarded each year to the best gross scorer on the day for Golfing Excellence. This year the winner of this new prestigious award was Craig Vercoe. AMP Powerhouse Financial Service would like to extend their thanks to the President of Greenacres Graham Sherlock, the staff at Greenacres Golf Course, the local businesses that helped to make the day another success, and of course all who attended on the day.

Team NonStop took centre stage at the ultimate NZ Moto Trials event for 2010, with four wins over last weekend. Jake Whitaker, current NZ and Australian Champ rode a blinder of an event confirming without a doubt that he is worthy of the No.1 plate. Spectators watched in awe as Jake rode from point to point on the very much world class sections says Stephen Oliver. “Jake is riding high and has confirmed that he intends to contest the WCT Series in 2011. NonStop and Goldpine are very proud to be partners in waiting in helping this talented star to reach his lifetime goals.” Another NonStop team member, Nick Oliver, having stepped down from competition for most of this year returned to the AGrade and once he had honed his skills again on day one, managed to secure another Team NonStop first placing for the weekend. In addition to his success, Nick took the NonStop built machine, which his father Stephen fabricated, to victory. This was the ‘Sheronda’s’ first outing (so named after its Sherco, Honda Montesa heritage). The titles didn’t stop there for NonStop though, with another team member, younger brother Peter Oliver, also winning. Peter had not competed since the 2009 Championships held in Welling-

ton but he scrapped in on day one by one point and very quickly found some of his old form to win his grade overall by a healthy margin. Nick and Peter encouraged older brother Andrew to compete after a six year break from the sport, when he won the NZ Junior title back in 2004. He finished with a well deserved 6th placing after his great efforts all weekend. Not to be outdone by the younger members of the NonStop squad, founder of NonStop Adventure NZ Ltd and father to the Oliver brothers, 50 year old Stephen, proved without a doubt why he is considered to be one of New Zealand’s leading coaches, with the experience and skill to take fellow riders to the next level of skill while having a fun ride. Stephen was on top of the podium all weekend with a pearl of a ride on day three to stay clean all day in his class. The NZ Juniors grade was won by Liam Draper from Auckland, who celebrated his 14th birthday over the weekend. As an added bonus the North v South shield went to the South Island, just reward to the Pioneer Club for an outstanding event. Mention must go to local Christchurch rider Glen Smith who rode superbly all weekend, helping to secure the win for the South Island.
