Crusaders game just the ticket The most successful Super rugby team in history is coming to town and it may be the start of more to come. The Crusaders are in talks with the Tasman Rugby Union to bring two of its Super Rugby games to Nelson in 2015. But first, organisers are hoping for a sell-out at Sportspark Motueka on Friday, February 7 when the Crusaders host their southern rivals, the Highlanders. Tickets are now on sale for the biggest rugby game to hit the region this summer as both teams will bring their entire squad to the region – including close to 20 All Blacks. Tickets went on sale yesterday but the game is expected to be a sell-out and tickets to the covered stand are already close to sold. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the game is a great opportunity for the region to show its support for the game and encourage the Crusaders to

City parking fines quadruple Parking fines in Nelson city have quadrupled since a new company took over the contract to issue tickets. Environmental Inspections Ltd took over the contract from Nelson City Council in October, marking a dramatic rise in the number of tickets slapped on windscreens from the month before.
In September a total of 487 tickets were given out, compared with 1236 in October and 2076 in November. But while the number of tickets has increased astronomically, the council says it’s likely to be due to a crossover in staff that saw just one fulltime warden and a part-time warden patrolling in September, which were replaced

council recorded 385 fewer tickets than this year. Overall the number of tickets issued is down in 2013, compared to last year. In 2012, 17,792 tickets were given out with fines to the value of $1,199,389.

parking fines quadruple FROM PAGE 1 This year there have been 13,421 tickets issued to the value of $1,133,700. NCC’s manager of communications, Angela Ricker, says staffing changes throughout the year could account for the reduction in tickets. “[Or] the enforcement message is getting through and people are parking correctly, thereby avoiding infringement fines,” she says. The price of the infringement fines has not risen since the change of contract, says Angela.

bring more games here in 2015. “It’s absolutely crucial we get a huge crowd. They have two games that they have to take away from Christchurch because of the under 20 football world cup and we don’t want them to even consider anyone else.” The game is the only pre-season match the Crusaders will play in the South Island in 2014 and will feature up to five local players, including Tasman Makos captain Shane Christie.
One of the men who helped bring the game to the region, Shane Drummond, says he’s looking forward to a huge day. “This is the third pre season game we’ve got to Mot and at the first one we had 10,000 people. Because Waitangi Day is the day before we’re hoping it will encourage people from out of town to take the day off in between and make a long weekend of it. But the 5.30pm kick off means locals can still work and come to the game.” The other main organiser, George Sturgeon,
Crowd doing a Mexican wave at the last Crusaders pre-season game in Motueka in 2010. is currently finding a sponsor to bring the Crusaders’ horses with them. Tickets are selling for as little as $15 and are available from Nelson School of Music, Theatre Royal, Nelson

Retailers brace for shopping rush The big Christmas shop has begun. That’s the message from retailers who are bracing themselves for their busiest time of year. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says the next two weeks will be all go in the city. “This week signals the start of the serious Christmas shopping period, the fortnight before Christmas. Last week the rain was a bit of a dampener but this week is fine and people are really in the Christmas spirit now.” Retailers say it’s going to be a “modestly good Christmas” she says. “I don’t think anyone is saying it’s going to be a bumper but the figures are up.” Figures released by Paymark – which processes 75 per cent of the country’s eftpos transactions – show Nelson had growth of 6.5 per cent compared to last November and as a country, transactions are up by 8.6 per cent for the first seven days of December. Gus Beullens, the owner of Trafalgar St Menswear shop Gustave’s, says he’s looked back on figures from the last time Christmas Day fell on a Wednesday, which was in

stores were reporting back a really busy weekend. “Things are really buoyant, particularly the more gift oriented stores, but clothing too.” Cathy says the atmosphere in the CBD is really positive. “People are feeling good out there, it’s busy and the atmosphere is good. She says the opening of Kmart in Richmond hasn’t had much of an impact on the city. “Everyone’s been out to have a look but the type of things you’re buying at Kmart are nothing special. I think the novelty factor is over, I don’t see it having an ongoing impact on the city.”

Nelson duo sign US record deal Phillip Rollo Reporter UpgrADE for Brook: Nelson City Council’s Works and Infrastructure Committee has given the green light for the revised plans to improve walking and cycling in the Brook area. Feedback from the community saw significant changes to the original proposal. Nelson musical duo Broods have inked an international record deal, setting them up for world-wide stardom. Caleb and Georgia Nott, both former Garin College students, were in Los Angeles on Thursday to sign a deal with Capitol Records in the US and Polydor in the UK. The two labels will be jointly releasing Broods’ debut EP in February and a full length album in August. Last month Nelson Weekly reported that the Notts were poised to sign a deal in the US. Capitol Records is one of the world’s leading record companies and boasts an alumni of 50 Cent, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elton John, Foo Fighters, Frank Sinatra, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg. Broods’ first single “Bridges” has already reached 300,000 views on their Sound Cloud page and frequent airplay on New Zealand radio stations within just one month of its release. The track is also receiving early play on KCRW in Los Angeles and Radio
Nelson brother and sister duo Caleb and Georgia Nott have just signed a record deal with Capitol Records in the United States. Photo: Stephen Tilley. 1 in the UK, sparking US music magazine Billboard to ask whether they were “New Zealand’s next pop wonder”. “Bridges” was produced by Joel Little, who will be helming Broods’ forthcoming EP and album. Joe’s work with Lorde has resulted in one of the year’s biggest singles and albums, with “Royals” and “Pure Heroine”, respectively. Georgia was the lead singer of The Peasants when they won Rockquest in 2011 while Caleb played guitar the year prior when the band was called The Peasants of Eden and finished second at the national final.
Glen Common, the co-founder of Smokefreerockquest, says this was a pretty special occurrence that needs celebrating regardless of what happens from here. “Things could go huge for them and I really hope it does,” he says. “We bumped into them at the NZ Music Awards and they seemed very excited then. You could tell things were going very well for them.” While the group had been performing together well before entering the secondary school music competition, Glenn believes
Smokefreerockquest gave them encouragement to keep going. “That’s probably the key. There are other musicians of a similar ilk but these guys have really stuck at it. They certainly had the talent, they got an opportunity and it looks like now they’ve got the ink signed on the paper.” When The Peasants won Rockquest in 2011, they worked with Joel who produced their only single “Letting Go” as part of the first place prize. Garin College principal John Boyce was unaware that the Notts, who are now based in Auckland, had signed an international record deal at the time of calling, but labelled it “enormous” and a “very big deal” when he was told. “That’s wonderful,” he says. John described Caleb as an “all-rounder” when he was at school. “He was into sport and he was always a great guitarist. While Georgia “played sport and things”, she was much more focussed on her music and drama, John says. “She was into the arts and threw herself into it. She was also one of our school captains last year.”

Support builds for Nelson’s Gigatown bid Nelson City Council could be set to get behind the region’s bid to become the next Gigatown. Gigatown Nelson is on the agenda for this Thursday’s council meeting and mayor Rachel Reese has already signalled her support for the venture both online and to the Nelson Weekly yesterday. Gigatown is a competition between town’s in New Zealand and the town with the most amount of points by September next year will be crowned “Gigatown” and will have internet speeds of a gigabyte a second, around 100 times faster than most high-speed broadband. The competition is being run by telecommunications company Chorus and the winner will be the first town in the southern hemisphere to have internet that fast. The group behind the Nelson bid is hopeful the council will actively participate in the campaign and echo Rachel’s backing, who says she is “delighted” to see the community come together for the competition. She told the Weekly that the council “fully supports” the effort to make Nelson the first Gigatown. And Nelson is already making its mark in the competition with a number of locals getting involved

says Gigatown Nelson ambassador Clare Atkins. “We were slow off the blocks but momentum is building with some very active support. We now have 743 likes on Facebook and are now in twelfth place and pushing for eleventh.” The competition is based on collecting Gigatown points through social media by using the “hash tag” #GIGATOWNNSN. The fact Nelson has skyrocketed up the rankings is a positive sign says Clare. “We’ve just had a very active weekend too and are hoping to get 10,000 bonus points for doubling our number of signed up supporters. “We are in for the long haul and building momentum to last until September - we need people to help us in whatever way they can but mostly be signing up, spreading the word and getting active on social media.” Currently sitting in first place is Wanaka with 48,7387 points. Come in and experience the Bowater difference!
Nelson is becoming increasingly diverse, according to the latest census, with more than 20 per cent of us born outside New Zealand. The latest information released by Statistics New Zealand from this year’s national census also shows we earn less than the national average and fewer of us own our own homes. In releasing the results, Government Statistician Liz MacPherson said information from the 2013 census shows the New Zealand population is growing more ethnically diverse, and that as a nation we have a lower rate of home ownership than in 2006, yet the number of dwellings has increased and Nelson mirrors those results “The Nelson region reflects those trends. The 2013 census results showed Nelson has the thirdhighest percentage of residents who were born overseas, after only Auckland and Wellington. More
than 1 in 5, or 21.2 per cent, of the Nelson region’s population were born overseas, up from 18.6 percent in 2006.” In all, around 46 per cent of Nelson’s overseas-born residents were born in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and another 12 per cent were born in Europe (excluding the UK). In Tasman, 17.4 per cent of the population was born overseas, with immigrants from the UK, Ireland and Europe dominating the figures. Nelson’s home ownership rate is 68.4 per cent, hardly changed from the 68.6 per cent in the 2006 census. The median income for people aged 15 and over is $27,200, up 13.8 per cent from the last census but still behind the national average of $28,500. Nelson Art expo confirmed for 2014 The South Island’s largest art expo will return to Nelson next winter, its third year in a row. Organisers confirmed the show will go on next year after declaring this year’s event a stunning success, with 4500 people walking through the Trafalgar Centre doors over the course of the three day expo. Nic Foster says he’s delighted the Nelson Art Expo will return next year, saying it has
secured the support of key stakeholders, including artists, sponsors and support from people attending this year’s expo. “We had a fablous response this year, selling $130,000 worth of art, which is phenominal.” The Nelson Art Expo is held each July at the Trafalgar Centre and attracts around 120 artists from Nelson, Tasman and around New Zealand.
Nic says they’ve already had several dozen bookings from artists keen to be involved in the 2014 event and that, combined with the support of sponsors, was enough Nic Foster for them to go ahead with it again next year. “In the last couple of weeks we’ve had major interest from sponsors and artists so
we decided to go again.” He says they want to bring in more people, with around the same number of artists. “We get between 150 and 180 applications and we can then choose who will go in. That means the quality is really high.” Nic says the team is aiming for around 6000 people through the doors for the next event and more details will be released in the coming months.
Another building to come down after failing quake test Another Nelson building is set to come down after failing an earthquake strength test. The building currently houses Bowater Hyundai but its CEO Chris Bowater says the safety of his staff and customers is of paramount importance, pointing out that the building has undergone some strengthening allowing them to safely occupy for the short term. The Hyundai dealership will move across the road, to the corner of Rutherford and Hardy Sts where Bowater Honda currently is. Bowater Honda will move to a recently refurbished, centrally located premises at 82 Achilles Ave, backing onto their Bowater Toyota dealership. Chris says the cost of fully strengthening the building to the new building code
was “not commercially viable” but he is excited about what the move means for the business. “Some would say Bowater Hyundai outgrew that building a year ago so it gave us the push we needed to move the businesses around. The changes mean we can better accommodate Honda in a more central location and we can upsize our Hyundai operation, which has seen rapid growth over the past few years.” Chris says they aren’t rebuilding on the site in the short term, so it will be cleared and it will become a larger used vehicle sales yard. He says Honda will move into its new premises in early January and Hyundai will then move out of its current building in mid to late February, paving way for the building to come down.

Marine pest found at Port Nelson Divers have discovered a pest in Nelson Marina it was revealed yesterday. A regular survey by NIWA divers uncovered the marine organism known as Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii) for the second time this year in Nelson's marina. The initial survey at the beginning of No-
vember found one immature specimen under a pontoon at Nelson Marina. As a result, Nelson City Council and the Ministry of Primary Industries commissioned a more exhaustive search of the area. This uncovered eleven further fanworms, again in the Nelson Marina. The fanworms were sent to NIWA for ex-
amination to see if any were reproductively mature. The good news is that none of the specimens showed signs of being able to reproduce. The fanworms have established populations in Lyttleton, Auckland and Whangarei harbours. As the recent finds have been around the
marina, NCC is asking recreational and commerical boaties to pay particular attention to cleaning and antifouling their boats before leaving Nelson for the summer holidays. If you spot anything that could be an unwanted organism, please report it to MPI 0800 80 99 66.
Golden Girls ready for Christmas shows For 14 years Nelson’s Golden Girls’ have been shining at rest homes, anniversaries, birthday parties and hospitals and they say there’s no end in sight. The five piece singing, dancing and acting group have been busy so far this month visiting various rest homes in the lead up to Christmas. Maria Clinton says the group have performed 876 shows since 1999 and she has each recorded in A4 books, detailing what they performed and when so they can keep the show fresh next time they visit. “Our shows are put together like a jigsaw to suit audience and age. We keep it light and fun and love to see the smiles.” The Golden Girls have 14 Christmas shows planned over the next few weeks, including its first of the season at the Wood Retirement Village last Friday. Maria says the group doesn’t get a lot of money out of their gigs, but they enjoy doing it because of the smiles they get and knowing that they are doing a nice thing in the community.

Rutherford Day proposal for our most famous son Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz He was the Brightwater born physicist who split the atom and became known as the father of nuclear physics. And if one local man gets his way, we’ll be honouring Ernest Rutherford with a recognised day of remembrance next year. Tony Flewellen has set August 30, 2014 the anniversary of Ernest Rutherford’s birth in his sights as the first ever Rutherford Day. He says his passion for science, particularly the philosophy of science combined with the recent reading of a biography of Rutherford has spurred him on to create the day of recognition. “After coming to understand what an amazing bloke he was I thought it was only right that perhaps we honoured Rutherford in the same way he chose to honour us. When he was elevated to the peerage he took the name quite proudly, Baron Rutherford of Nelson, he had a lot of choices open to him but he chose Nelson and I think it is probably time to return that compliment.” He says despite place names and memorials around Nelson, more could be done to remember Rutherford and

Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. his achievements and that’s been the motivation behind pushing a special anniversary day. “There’s place names around the place and most of us are familiar with Rutherford house and Rutherford St, but I think there is probably a whole generation of Nelsonians now who’ve grown up not really knowing the full story behind those names.” He says while the idea is in the very early stages of planning, he’s got plenty of ideas about what the day could potentially be for Nelson. “It’s in gestation at the moment but it has the potential
to be a lot of things. I would like first and foremost for it to be a day where we honour Rutherford’s memory. Secondly it is a chance for us all to focus on the sciences in our region and the way they contribute to our economy because it’s a huge part of what we are in Nelson. And it could also be a chance to honour some of the academic work that goes on.” He says he is hopeful that the community will get behind it and encourages the public to support the idea. “August 30 next year will be the inaugural Rutherford Day – I’m quite sure of it.”

Church spread Christmas spirit
Members of the Grace Church have gone about spreading the Christmas love by making shortbread, distributing it to homes around Richmond, making a UV nativity scene and erecting a giant star above the hills of Richmond. Ken Polglase believes the “real meaning of Christmas” was being lost from the community, so as a church, they decided to “refocus” the community towards the birth of Jesus Christ. “We’ve done a number of things like the shortbread with a card attached to as many letterboxes as we can in Richmond,” he says. “The whole focus is putting the focus back on Jesus.” About 9500 pieces of shortbread had been baked over the past few weeks with 50 members of the church helping out in teams. “Initially we were going to
make them star shaped but logistically it became too difficult but they’ve got a star imprinted. Groups are marking off streets and taking them around. It’s very much been a team effort with different people doing different things.” The eight metre high star was set up on Saturday night and will be up until Christmas Eve. It is visible from Richmond, and can be seen above Champion Rd. “We’ve had a team working on the structure. They assembled it on Saturday. With the wind it took a few attempts. But a team of men from the church made it their project to get it up there. Already we’re getting feedback. We just want to lift the awareness in the community that it’s not just about Santa Claus and that there is a real significance about Christmas.”

Nelson man shocked KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER Reduce condensation and save energy over Lotto win with Double Glazing
Single Glazed
A Nelson man is still reeling after winning $666,667 with Lotto first division last week. The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, checked his ticket on Sunday following the draw and got “a real shock to the system” when he saw all his numbers come up. “I’m very humbled to have won this much money,” the winner said. “I think it’s still sinking in.” With the money now in his bank, the Nelson winner is starting to make plans to spend his windfall, but was relatively coy about what that might be.

“I certainly won’t be doing anything crazy with the money,” the winner laughed. The winning ticket was bought from the Black Cat Store in Nelson. The total first division prize of $2 million was shared between three tickets bought in Nelson, Mosgiel and Auckland, with each winner taking home $666,667. There have been seven Lotto first division winners in the Nelson or Marlborough region in 2013. This is the third Lotto first division ticket sold at the Black Cat Store in Nelson.

‘I’m lucky I’m still alive’
Woman has heart attack, cancer and car crash all in one year Katrina Erceg can’t wait to see the back of 2013, for her it really has been a year from hell. She’s had a major heart attack, cancer and a major car accident all within the past 12 months and she says – despite the shocking misfortune – that she feels lucky. Lucky to be alive. Katrina has lived in Teal Valley for decades and is also the secretary for the Nelson North Country Club. In March this year she had a heart attack while in her home. Her daughter rushed her to the hospital after the attack which left her fortunate to still be alive. While in hospital she asked the doctors to have a look at a lump that had developed on the side of her face. It was cancer. So shortly after recovering from her heart attack, Katrina went to Christchurch for surgery and radiation treatment. The surgeons were able to get all of the cancer out in a six hour operation and Katrina says she was lucky the radiation didn’t knock her around “too much”. That surgery was done on the Tuesday after Easter and the surgeons told her she had six months of treatment ahead of her. Just as she started to feel back to normal, seven months after the operation, Katrina was involved in a massive car accident on State Highway 6, near Wakapuaka. The accident happened

Firefighters removed her from the wreck and she was back on her way to hospital in the back of an ambulance. She was again lucky to escape with just bad bruising and says she can’t wait for New Year’s Eve. “It will be good to have this year behind me. I don’t want to go through that again,” she joked, in remarkably good spirits considering her experiences over the last nine months. “What a shocker.” She says she has a naturally laid back
personality, which has meant she hasn’t got “too uptight” about any of it. “Let’s hope [misfortune] comes in threes but I do wonder what’s next sometimes.” She isn’t going to sit around and sulk about it though, when visited by Nelson Weekly she was in the middle of making cupcakes and sausage rolls for the Nelson North Country Club’s Christmas party for kids that was held over the weekend. “I don’t dwell on it, I’m just praising that I’m so lucky to come through it all.”

Teen mums finish NCEA
Local young mums who swapped their babies for books this year have had their hard work recognised as the school year ends. The students who attend Nelson College for Girls' Teen Parent Unit hosted by Auckland Point School were commended by their teachers and members of the community at an inaugural prize giving on Friday. The school was celebrating its first full year of operation as well as the girls' achievements, says head teacher Philippa Trewavas. And she was proud to acknowledge their efforts. “The students over the year have had no shortage of enthusiasm. Each student set clear goals for themselves, most of which have been achieved.” She says the unit was extremely grateful for the support received by Soroptimist International of Nelson who “worked tirelessly to help make it possible”.

Tuesday November 26 The Tasman Visual Art Group's fifth annual summer exhibition attracted a great crowd two weekends ago who ended up voting for Betty Salter to win the People's Choice award. Betty's large oil painting 'Aoraki Sunrise' was the winning piece and the relatively new group member says she was thrilled to take home the accolade.

Tuesday November 26 The 41 local Special Olympics Nelson athletes who attended the National Summer Games in Dunedin two weeks ago did the region proud bringing home a ramge of medals across the many different events. Coordinator Lois Aitkenhead says she was thrilled that nearly everyone achieved personal bests while at the games. Despite being up against 1200 entrants from all over the country the group took home 21 gold medals, 25 silver medals, 13 bronze medals, 12 fourth placings and 21 fifth placings. Tuesday November 26 The Stoke local with 35 pen pals has had a huge response after featuring in the Nelson Weekly two weeks ago. Tania Read let us know that she has had friends and family ring up after they spotted her in the paper. She was also stopped at the Nelson Airport open day by people who recognised her and couldn’t believe the effort she went to and she’s had an elderly man get in touch withy her to share his tales of pen friends that he’s had over the years.

Nelson’s musicman ready to party Andrew Board It may not be the most likely place for celebrity interviews, but from a small study in a Washington Valley home and surrounded by records, CDs and 45s Grant Smithies picks up his phone and talks to some of the world’s most famous musicians – from the Rolling Stones to the Spice Girls. In fact, he conducted those two interviews within the space of 24 hours just last week. Grant is New Zealand’s top music columnist, reviewer and critic. Writing for the national Sunday Star Times and reviewing music on Radio Live. He lives and breathes music and says he’s lost count of the number of international acts he’s spoken to from his Nelson home. “It becomes something that you just have to do each week, like talking to one of your mates except you have to do a bit of research. Sometimes calls get cocked up and you’ll come home to an answer phone message, like one recently from Graham Norton [the British host who hosts a TV show on TV3] saying ‘hello there, I missed your call’.” But Grant doesn’t just share his passion through newsprint and radio waves, the former DJ also hosts dance parties three or four times a year and they’ve become something of a Nelson institution. So popular are the parties that it always sells out and Grant often gets disappointed fans that have missed out on tickets or who didn’t know when the next party was.
Nelson’s Grant Smithies with some of his record collection that he will be playing at Deville Cafe on Saturday, December 21. Photo: Andrew Board. “They’re really fun and we always get a great turn out,” he says. Grant’s next party will be held at Deville Café in central Nelson on Saturday December 21, and he says it may just be more popular than usual. “This time of year everyone gets sick to death of Christmas carols and Christmas music, so this will be a good chance to come along, listen to something different and enjoy a great night away from Christmas music.” And the music will be different. Grant says he loves anything with a strong bass line
but is particularly fond of soul, Jamaican, salsa and funk music and people can expect something which they perhaps haven’t heard before. “I think people like the diversity of it and the excuse to get out there and bust out these alarming dance moves that you haven’t done for years – you get to see all that kind of stuff from the turntables.” Grants’ range of music will come from his vast vinyl collection, along with some CDs, 45s and even the odd downloaded song. He says some of the music will be stuff he’s
loved for decades and some will be from CDs he’s been sent in the past few weeks to review. “I think there’s a bigger audience of people who want to go out and dance. People from any age from 20 to 60 are keen to go out to something that doesn’t start at midnight and go until three in the morning. Where you’re going to hear a range of music, I think they’ve taken off for that reason. Because I have so much music and it just accumulates as part of my job, I can just play great dance music from all different eras from all over the world.” Grant says the DJ gigs are “heaps of fun” and the perfect way to round out his job as a music writer. “One thing that’s great is being able to turn something you’re really into, into your job. And I was really into writing and music and I just kind of mashed the two together. Now I get to write about music, talk about music and go and play music to people a couple of times a year really loud. And I get to do it in the town I want to live in as well. So I’m happy and I feel a lot of gratitude that it’s all turned out that way.” So from prodding the likes of Ronnie Wood and Mel C last week, Grant will turn his attention to the dance floor of Deville’s next weekend and promises a “great time”. “This is a chance to go out to hear fresh music, decently loud and crystal clear. I won’t be playing Snoopy’s Christmas so people can rest assured.” Tickets are $20 from Deville Cafe and it will sell out.

Standing room was limited as a packed Queen St witnessed a stunning visual hit of festive spirit at the annual Pak’n’Save Santa Parade. A wide mixture of floats cruised down Richmond’s main street, starting at the residential end in the east and making their way down past Sundial Square in the heart of the CBD. Kim Quint of Richmond Unlimited praised the participants for their creativity with everything from marchers, pole dancers, zumba dancers, animals and bands following Dave Walker’s steam traction engine down the road. There was plenty of festivity amongst the Kids
at Christmas theme. Overall winner of the best float Glen James Jewellers had the crowd reaching out to touch the floating foam that was bursting out onto the road to replicate winter snow. Kim says it stood out because of how animated they were with the crowd. “They were very bright and colourful, it was for kids and adults alike,” she says. “It was really good.” For having the best float Glen James Jewellers get a $500 voucher from event sponsor Pak’n’Save. Second place was Wakefield Preschool while a joint Nelson-Tasman kindergartens float came in third.

Red Cross volunteers recognised for service
“Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to function”, Red Cross Nelson service coordinator Amy Wilson told the volunteers. All of the 325 Red Cross volunteers and members were invited to the Nelson Golf Club on Friday for a Christmas afternoon tea, a thank you for all their work over the year. Volunteers help out Red Cross in a variety of ways including meals on wheels, community transport, community visitors service, knitting group, response team, youth programmes and working in one of the three shops. “We want to show people still care,” president Max Clarke says. Red Cross has active volunteers who have been involved for 50 years, and as part of the “thank you” afternoon tea, the organisation recognised the volunteers who had reached significant service milestones, including six who had reached
20 years. One of those was Richmond woman Maryann Anderson who has done the same meals on wheels run ever since moving to the region. “I’ve just continued doing it, one day a week,” Maryann says. “You get a list from up the hospital and you just deliver to the clients who are on it.” Maryann volunteers because “some day I’d like think someone will do it for me” and for the friends she has met. “There are some lonely elderly people and they’re just glad to see a face I think.” She says she has enjoyed every moment of the 20 years and while she admits she might not be able to reach another 20 years, she “hopes to do it a bit longer yet”. “You don’t expect anything for it, because you like to volunteer your services, but it’s nice to know you’re appreciated.”

Summer festival set to launch
Nelson’s summer entertainment programme has been released with community events planned through until March next year. Busker shows, lantern installations, open-air movies and street music are included in the Summer in Nelson lineup, which is presented by Nelson City Council and will launch this Saturday. The calendar includes Opera in the Park in February, which returned to a crowd of thousands last year following a one year break. NCC’s festivals director Sophie Kelly says Summer in Nelson is designed to appeal to all ages with most events being family-oriented. “We want families and friends to get the most out of their summer and enjoy great entertainment together.” Mayor Rachel Reese says it is important to provide both locals and visitors with a wide range of summer events that have free entry or an affordable ticket price. “This season’s line-up promises that – plus an impressive range of talent will have something for everybody’s tastes.” Kicking off the programme this Saturday evening is the Lantern Celebration at Centre of New Zealand, which will see people carrying brightly lit lanterns up the hill, where they’ll be treated

Thanks for article: Thanks for attending the Let's Wheel the Wheels inaugural event. Hopefully it was a small insight into the world of the disabled in Nelson. Thanks also for the small article in Nelson Weekly. It is factually correct - and the accompanying photo is delightful. Shala is happy with both! Given good weather again next year, it is hoped that it will be a slightly larger event. Thanks again, Christine Chapman.

We are thrilled to have been selected to renovate Subway Tahuna. We congratulate Gary and Moira on their fantastic new premises
Ph: 021 44 9396 A/H: 546 5051
Subway’s famous subs and wraps are now available in Tahunanui. New Zealand’s largest quick service restaurant chain has opened its newest franchise in Tahunanui last week and its owner says he’s excited about a busy summer ahead. Gary Beckett owns three other Subway stores in Greymouth, Motueka and in central Nelson and says the new store, in the old Hell Pizza site next to Mobil, is the 59th Subway in the South Island. “The new Subway restaurant is a huge asset to Tahunanui and it’s incredibly rewarding to be providing employment opportunities to the local community,” he says. “Tahuna is a welcome addition to my current store portfolio.” Gary says his new restaurant fills a need for healthier eating options in the area and he’s proud to have business partner Moira McDougall working alongside him to manage the Tahunanui restaurant. Moira has fourteen years’ experience with the Subway brand in Nelson. Subway’s South Island development agent, Stan Greene, says they’re looking for even more sites to grow the brand. “It feels like only yesterday we were opening a Subway restaurant on Bridge St. This rapid growth in our locations has been driven by strong demand from
our customers by both existing and new franchisees. And we’re actively looking for more sites to grow our network even further." He says the decision to open a store in Tahunanui was a no brainer and he was open to the challenge. "If you look at Subway's model of one store per how many people in the population, Nelson
is underserved compared to the national average, so there is a gap in the market that we are able to fill." The Tahuna store couldn't be in a better spot either, based out of a great main road location making access easy and convenient. Gary says he's been with Subway long enough to know the recipe to its success
Subway Tahunanui's Moira McDougall, left, and Jaimie Cotton in the new store. Moira is the manager the new Subway on Tahunanui Drive.

The new Subway store on Tahunanui Drive. The store opened last week and is the second in Nelson, after the Bridge St store in the CBD. comes down to the food. "It’s definitely a product who’s time has come. People want healthy, delicious food as well as great variety. Subway is all of those things." With the store open just in time for summer, it's already exceeding expectations with a steady stream of customers heading through the doors in its first week. Subway fans will already be familiar with the
menu, but new customers can look forward to a huge range of salads and sandwiches and wraps that can be tailor-made to suit. The store will also offer catering, whether it’s a party for children or adults, business meeting, event or function, picnic or sports event. Think Subway Tahuna for quick and easy catering. Ask the team in store or visit www.subwayexpress. co.nz to order online.

The Waimea River has been given the all clear after it was surveyed for toxic blue green algae although Tasman District Council staff will continue monitoring for the district's waterways for the algae which reached dangerous levels last summer. The council has been testing water quality weekly in a number of rivers around the district and so far they have found no signs of the algae which produces toxins that are poisonous to dogs and humans. But resource scientist Trevor James says they have been extra careful about monitoring the sites for the algae after it was found in the Maitai River in Nelson late last month. Nelson City Council issued a warning advising people to keep out of the lower Maitai River after the algae was found in high levels. The algae was found from the Maitai Motor Camp downstream meaning that many of the Maitai's popular swimming holes will be out of bounds. Trevor says the algae usually only reached dangerous levels during periods of low flow in the summer so it was unusual to be found in high concentrations in the Maitai in November. He says Cawthron
Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Institute scientist Susie Wood is working to find out what is causing the algae to bloom and why it has happened earlier in the Maitai this year. "We are not sure what is causing it to grow and why it is only found in some rivers. It could be something to do with the fact that the Maitai and Waimea rivers have dams which changes the flow but that's just a hypothesis." The algae, which is black or dark brown and has a musky smell, represents a very real danger and Trevor says council will be diligent about monitoring sites on the district's rivers. Last year a dog died after eating the algae in the lower reaches of the Waimea River. "We looked at the Waimea last Tuesday and the levels were very low so it's not a problem yet. We have integrated the surveys with our water quality testing at swimming sites so we'll be doing it weekly and then twice weekly over Christmas and into February." Sites on the Motueka, Lee, Roding, Wairoa and Takaka rivers were also clear, he says.

Two months ago Nelson man Peter Hanna launched a fundraising project to raise money for the house where he stayed while helping his wife battle cancer. The house is used by dozens of Nelsonians each year and is across the road from Christchurch Hospital. Two weeks ago a fundraising concert held in Hope raised $9000 for the cause and in January Brightwater man George Paki Paki is cooking a hangi for the fundraiser. Specsavers raise cash for charity Specsavers Richmond and Specsavers Nelson have raised more than $560 for local organisation the Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust and its national charity partner, The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, through its new charity initiative, the Specsavers Community Program. Specsavers Richmond and Nelson store partners, Mick Toll and Amanda Rowe, say their teams are looking forward to giving back to the community that supports them, especially during the Christmas season when these funds are really needed. “We are thrilled to give our customers the opportunity to help us give back through our Specsavers Community Program and we are delighted to make our first round of donations to the Nelson Tasman
Region Hospice Trust and The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. We hope these donations offer some assistance to such important causes, especially in the lead up to Christmas. “If this is what we can raise just three months into the Specsavers Community Programme, we can’t wait to see what results we will have at six months!” says Mr Toll. The Specsavers Community Programme, which raises funds for selected local charities around the country and The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, provides customers with a token for each pair of glasses purchased at a Specsavers store. Customers can then use the token to select which charity they would like to support and a subsequent donation is made by the store.

A community picnic is being held in Tahunanui this Sunday and organisers hope it will be nice and relaxed. Picnic in the Park was also held last year and attracted a good turnout says organiser Jo Lavington of the Tahuna Community Centre. "Last year the picnic was a really relaxed,

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Merry Christmas to you all. We trust it will be a safe and happy one for every boater out there. • Whilst it has not happened in Nelson there have been recent drownings around the country and it is evident that each of these could have been avoided had the person been wearing a lifejacket. • There has been lots of public interest recently and we make no apology for the fact that we are concerned about your life and your wellbeing. Nelson has the largest tidal range in the country and it is the unseen current that has caught many a kayaker, paddle boarder, boater by surprise. • In the last few weeks in our region there has been a man rescued in a rubber dinghy with a broken oar (no secondary form of propulsion), a launch rescued due to being out of fuel (enough said), and two guys rescued after falling out of their launch, small vessels nearly run down at night due to no lights (dumb), one kayaker on a sit on kayak towing another sit on kayak with two guys on it - no lifejackets (dumber), three people attempting to get to the boulder bank on a kayak no lifejackets, two rescued (dumber still) and kayakers and yachties playing chicken with big ships. • Let’s all put the brakes on and take 5. 5 seconds to think about - Is this a good idea? Is it safe? Do I have safety equipment? Am I capable? Am I endangering myself or others? • Boat safely this summer and think of the reasons you should, think of your family. Have a Merry Christmas on the water, without alcohol.

Nelson to get behind Philippines The organisers of a fun day to raise funds for disaster relief in the Philippines have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity they are receiving from the Nelson-Tasman community. Helping Hands Nelson have organised the community fun day at Auckland Point School this Sunday (Dec 15) to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Philippines earlier this year. The group has been asking people for help and two of its members, Philippine woman Juliet Barton and her stepdaughter Ariel, say the response to their request has invariably been "yes". "Our budget is zero so we are really grateful for all the support we are getting," Juliet says. "All the people we have asked to help have said yes. "All the entertainers are performing for free and everyone is donating their time. It shows Nelson may be a small town but it has a big heart." Ariel says the entertainment will include live music from Paul Ubana Jones, Trudi Wilson, Paul Madsen and Papercity. There will also be food stalls, spot prizes, games, bouncy castles, a team of huskies and miniature horses. "It's been a huge team effort to get everything organised. Everyone has been working really hard and doing everything they can," she says. Juliet says the earthquake and typhoon devastated the Philippines and

she is so happy she has had an opportunity to help out. "It has been terrible. Thankfully my parents and family over there are fine although my parents' house was destroyed by the earthquake and then hit again by the typhoon." Ariel says there will also be a fundraising performance from Bryce Wastney and Steve Mitchell in the Bel-
Aire Tavern in Tahunanui starting at 7.30pm this Sunday. An art auction at the Tahunanui Community Centre was also planned for March with proceeds from all the fundraising events going to World Vision and Red Cross. The fun day will be at Auckland Point School from 10am to 4pm. Admission $2 for adults, $1 for children and $5 for families.

This coming weekend Nelson Bays Police are taking part in the single biggest policing operation in Australasia. New Zealand and Australian Police are all taking part in Operation Unite. It's a united voice challenging people to change their anti-social drinking habits. Here in Nelson Bays we will have a large number of officers out on the streets over the weekend conducting hotel checks and checking for drink drivers. We'll also be doing controlled purchase operations to see if those selling alcohol are doing so responsibly and not making sales to minors. There will be zero tolerance for drunken disorderly behaviour and breaches of the liquor ban. We want to send a really clear message to the community that it's not ok to get so intoxicated that you can't look after yourself and it's not okay to get a skin full of liquor and go around looking for fights. What we want is for people to be able to go out and socialise safely in Nelson Bays. We know that a significant number of offences are committed when the offender has consumed alcohol and the majority of alcohol related offences are committed near licensed premises. Alcohol is the single biggest driver of crime in our community. It simply shouldn't be that way, but for things to change, the community needs to stand up and take some ownership of this issue. Coming closer to Christmas we know more people will be consuming more alcohol and the reality is that will create more problems for Police to sort out. While Operation Unite is aimed at all alcohol related harm, we will have a second operation running across the weekend which will target drivers on rural roads. There will be compulsory breath checkpoints popping up in out of the way places. My message to anyone who is driving is don't take a chance - if you are going to be drinking make some alternative arrangement for getting home.

• It has been one of those days. It began this morning when I dropped the toast, butter [and honey] side down. Banking clouds made the sky look as if it was about to drop buckets. But it didn’t, so I had to water plants and deal with a cold spiteful wind at the same time. Then the sun came out, so off came the sweat shirt. But 10 minutes later, the cold set in again. Dropped something, retrieved it, stood up and banged my head. I could go on, but the day ended with a delicious blueberry muffin thanks to Peter, and all is well again. If our chat is a little cranky on my part, all of the above, are the reasons why! • So. The summer veges are in the garden, a-growing [and a-blowing] by today’s efforts. It’s time for a bit of fun. • Plants, just like people, have personalities. We are all aware of “the life of the party” type of person. They can be fun, but we are all aware of some who are not! And come to think of it, there is always some self-appointed leader on a bus tour. The one who is always first on the bus, thus ensuring the best seat. This self-same “leader” is also first off as well, and is a confirmed first up at the food bar. And so it goes on. There are the loud mouths, the shy violets, the hard workers, the slackers, the supportive types, and the gunnas. They are always “gunna” do this and that. But probably the most reliable of the col-

lection, are the “supporters” because they can be relied upon to lend a hand and give a bit of support when needed. And of course there are the “flamboyants” as well as those who like to do their own thing, regardless. • A shrub called kalmia latifolia likes to be different. It begins life with a pink bud that resembles a star made with a cake icing tube. No wonder it is often called the icing sugar shrub. It is a fascinating thing, liking conditions that rhodos and camellias prefer. • There is another shrub called brunfelsia, also going by the name Yesterday Today and Tomorrow. Three shades of mauve bless the shrub at the same time. I forget how it goes, but as the flowers develop, they change their colours giving a fascinating effect. A woman wanted to give a gift to a friend who was about to deal with a serious operation. She chose the brunfelsia because of the special country name. • A plant that does its own thing, regardless of its cousins, is hydrangea ayesha. It produces flowers that resemble the flowers of the fragrant lilac. Alas, ayesha doesn’t have the fragrance, but she is indeed different. Pink or blue blooms depending on soil. Remember, lime for pink flowers, acid for blue. The oak leaf hydrangeas like to be a bit different too, with foliage resembling oak leaves. They colour up nicely in autumn too.

‘creating a garden you love’
• Conical shaped flowers add to the difference. The shrimp plant is really different. Can’t remember its botanical name. Too hard to spell as well! But the country name says it all. The flowers really do look like hanging shrimps, colour and all. Can be grown as an indoor plant as well, and I must add it flowers for ages. • Thinking about the pushy person on the bus. There are perennials and shrubs that behave like their human counterpart too, so be sure to seek advice when buying. • Mention should be made regarding the supporters. In the plant world these are often called companion plants. They quietly offset the loud noisy plants in the garden and make a valuable contribution to the general effect. Never underestimate their value. • Think about a play or musical performance. Yes, the performers are great. The costumes likewise. The props are magnificent. But the audience has eyes only for the performers. At the end of the performance they come forward and bow in acknowledgement of your appreciation. • But what would have happened if the stage crew, the make-up, and costume departments and the tea lady had gone on strike, what would you have then? Nothing! Catch you later, Jill.

American football season over after 'strong' season
Nelson Knights quarter back Nathan Rais in action during the Junior Ripper Gridiron League final at Saxton Field on Friday night. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The cry of “hut, hut, hut!” doesn’t echo around Nelson very often, but for the past ten weeks it could be heard at Saxton Field as one of its paddocks had been turned into an American football pitch. The Junior Ripper Gridiron League concluded on Friday night and head coach Mark Rais, who ran around in a full black and white referee uniform during the season, says it was another big success. The aim was to get children playing a new sport at a time that would generally be their offseason. But having been told that some of them had been researching their favourite players and had been glued to the TV screens when the NFL was one, Mark believes there is an interest here in American’s biggest sport. “The most important thing was to make sure they enjoyed it, you don’t want it to be a tedious sport,” he says. “For people that never met, they’re now friends and that meant a lot.”
The age of players varied between nine and 16 years, with competitors of both genders. Each player was put into one of the two evenly matched teams, the Nelson Knights or the Tasman Hornets, and given a position for the season. “A lot of them came from different backgrounds; track and field, rugby, some came from soccer, but to have that mix brought a different set of skills. It’s good to see them at a time that they’d be inactive that they are out doing something.” Mark says it was a huge help having a team of coaches – defensive coordinator Shane Tinetti, offensive coordinator Greg Lautenslager and personal trainer Devon Scott – on board too. “I think they had a lot to do with the training and the level of play we had this season, that’s helped a lot.” The next season will begin in September with registrations happening in August. The age restriction will be changed slightly to make it just for 10-16 year olds.

Makos name squad for 7s comp
Local mountainbiker makes NZ team
Nelson mountainbiker Scott Barr's dream of becoming a professional rider became a little more real last week when he was named in the newly formed national junior development squad. Scott is one of eight cross-country riders selected for the Torpedo7-sponsored squad which will be training for under-19 races at the national mountainbike champs in Rotorua in February and the Oceania champs at Mt Hutt in March. The 16-year-old Waimea College student will also race in the New Zealand Cup which will be held in Canterbury on January18-19 and Nelson on February 2-3. "I really want to race full-time so this is a big step along that pathway for me," Scott says. "It's going to be a big advantage good training with the squad for nationals and then the Oceanias." It is the first time that Scott has been named in a national team although his selection is no surprise after recording a series of impressive results at national level. He first came to the selector's attention when he won the under-15 national secondary school's title in 2011 and followed that up by winning the under-17 nationals last year and the under-17 New Zealand Cup this year. Scott is determined to continue producing top results and has been training hard on the trails around the region. "I mostly ride on the Codgers tracks or around the Richmond Hills and sometimes I get out to Kaiteriteri. I also do a bit of road riding which is good training and it's also nice to get out with other riders." Scott says he also enjoys getting out with his father Darrin, who is also a keen rider, once or twice a week. "'It's fun riding with dad although he has trouble keeping up now."
There is plenty of speed and strike power in the Tasman Makos sevens squad which was named last week, and the team’s manager believes they are a real chance to reach the quarter finals of the Bayleys National Sevens for the first time. The 20-man training squad features full-time Tasman Makos Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Billy Guyton, Mitchell Scott and Robbie Malneek, while a mixture of top club performers and youngsters complement what is probably the strongest squad Tasman has sent to the national championship. Manager Mike Kerrisk says, providing Tevita and Billy are released from their Super Rugby squads, the team is more mature than they’ve had in the past. “There are some really good leaders this time round and we’ve got genuine pace and a good understanding of the game,” he says. He singled out Mitchell and James Lash as two players that will be key to Tasman’s success. “Mitchell Scott will be a key strike weapon for us and his speed is vital. James Lash has proven to be really effective in the game of sevens, he controls the game really well and he’s a guy that has really stepped up.” Bryce, who is part of the All Blacks Sevens squad, will also be an added boost. “Let’s hope he can come off this international campaign keen and injury free. He’ll know a lot of the key players in the opposition teams as well so we’ll be relying on his experience and knowledge to develop game plans against these teams.” The full training squad is: Daniel Baxter, Te Puoho Stephens, Sione Holani, Dan Hytongue, Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Daniel Van Waas, Willie Umu, James Lash, Mitchell Scott, Ryan Setefano, Billy Guyton, Nanai Naturanga, David Havili, Robbie Malneek, Latham Jones, Kerehama Barrett, Hana Corbett-Burrows, Pelefoti Siaki and Eliot Smith. The squad, coached by Sam Gibbens and Gary Stevens, will be cut down to 12 before the National Sevens in Rotorua on January 11 and 12. They travel to Kaikoura this weekend for games against teams out of Canterbury.

Swimmers slash personal bests Ninety-four swimmers from the region competed at the Christmas Ribbon swim meet on Saturday hosted by the Tasman Swim Club at the Nayland Pool. The Tasman Swim Club, formerly the Nelson Swimming Club, has recently changed its name to more accurately reflect that the majority of its swimmers are based and train at the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond, and to also remove the confusion that exists with another similarly named club the Nelson South Swimming Club. There were four standout swimmers at the meet who all swim for the host club. David Price, 14, led the way by recording an impressive seven personal best times from all of his races, including slashing a huge 90 seconds off his 1500m freestyle and almost 15 seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Cassandra Hagan, 12, not to be outdone also recorded seven PBs from seven races and she took an impressive 32 seconds off her 800m freestyle time, and added icing to the cake by making NZ Junior Champs qualifying times in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Kaleb Johnston, 12 recorded four PBs from four races including the biggest PB of the meet as he smashed 93 seconds off his 1500m freestyle time while Xavier Anderson, also 12, rounded off the four stand-out swimmers also recording four PBs, taking a massive 60 seconds off his 400m freestyle time. The Nelson South Swimming Club entered 25 swimmers and the standout swimmer was Joe Banner, 13, who claimed four PBs from five races. Jet Persico, 12, also from Nelson South swam well to record three PBs and knocked four seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Gabrielle Hannen, 14, was another Nelson South swimmer to impress as she slashed 19 seconds off her 400m freestyle best time. One of Nelson South’s top nationally ranked swimmers, Eddie Neill, 16, broke the Nelson-Marlborough regional record for 16 year old boys in the 400m Medley taking the record off his older brother Fraser. Some of Nelson South’s swimmers found it tough go-
PRIDE OF THE SOUTH: Geena Gross and Emily Jensen celebrate after winning the ASB Women’s League football final with Mainland Pride for the first time in the club’s history. The Nelson pair, who have both represented New Zealand at age-grade level, played in defence as Mainland beat Northern Football 4-2 at North Harbour Stadium on Sunday. The ASB Women’s League is the top women’s football competition in New Zealand. Former Nelson College for Girls student Juliana Los is also a member of the Mainland squad.

Waimea Swimming Club entered 17 swimmers and the swimmers to impress were Oliver Stark, 11, and RubyLou Stuart, 11, who both swam very well to record four PBs each from six races. Oliver took six seconds off his 200m freestyle best time while RubyLou dropped her 200m Medley best time by seven seconds. Competitors from Motueka and Golden Bay were also in attendance.
