Nelson, Trafalgar Centre This weekend 14 & 15 April

Women’s Lifestyle Expo draws hundreds of stall holders The Women’s Lifestyle Expo returning to Nelson this weekend is held nationwide but the Expo also prides itself on having the best of the local companies from each region exhibiting beside the national companies. Renee Murray from Expo Organisers, Peacock Promotions, says the Expo is so popular because of the mix of exhibitors we have. “For example small business owners that work from home selling homemade crafts exhibit beside companies like Air NZ Holidays. This mix means we appeal to all ages and types of women because there really is something for everyone. Many of our exhibitors also only sell from online stores so the Expo is a great platform for them to showcase their products and visitors can check out their goods up close.” One of the many local companies looking forward to exhibiting at the Expo is Kelly More from More2 U who will be promoting her Mad Millie Cheese Mak-

ing Kits and new pizza ovens. You can find out how these ovens work and also see a Mozzarella stretching demonstration at 1.30 each day in the Expo Demonstration Zone. Kelly’s shop stocks Mad Millie Kits including cheese, pizza, pasta and preserving kits plus they offer after great sales support, technical advice as well as creative food ideas and recipes. Talk to Kelly at the Expo to sample her cheese and find out how you can make your own cheese at a hands-on cheese making workshop held a few days after the Expo. With around one hundred companies involved this year Renee Murray says “you are assured of a great day out. Bring your friends, mothers or daughters or simply enjoy a day to spoil yourself.” For more details please see www.expos. co.nz or to keep in touch with all the Expo news join the Expo’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WomensLifestyleExpo.

Rockers need more men They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach – Off Your Rockers choir also think it may get them a few more male voices. “All the ladies are very good looking, extremely welcoming and they’re extremely good cooks,” laughs Katie Holland the choirs musical director. The band has taken out some adverts

recently in an attempt to attract some male voices, adding a bit more roll to the rock of this very unique group. Off Your Rockers choir is a Nelson group for older singers who don’t fit the standard choral tone. “We haven’t quite got on to Metallica but we do sing Salmonella Dub, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan and a bit of Queen,”

says Katie. “A lot of young people hear what we do and say ‘you can’t sing that, that’s our music’,” she adds. Choir founder Robyn Beckingsale says she felt compelled to start the Nelson group after watching a movie three years ago.

Old toys attract new fans at show

Stoke Hall housed some serious pieces of mechanical ingenuity over the weekend – the Starship Enterprise, a battleship, windmills and a chocolate producing robot – and it was all part of the Meccano Magic Models Display. John Stark, an enthusiast with some fantastic Meccano clocks, says it was a great weekend with steady attendance over the long weekend. “Everyone was having a great time, especially the kids. It just happened the kids were of all ages,” says John. Some of the Meccano models were constructed by some of New Zealand and Australia’s top model builders, including many experts from the Christchurch Meccano Club who were looking for a showcase venue after the shakes of 2011. John says 1300 people attended the show over the weekend making or- Latia and Talia Grey check out a moving Meccano Windmill while wearing headbands made by a Meccano built braiding machine. “Young at Heart”, was a documentary on a choir of senior citizens from Massachusetts who cover songs by Jimi Hendrix, Sonic Youth and other unexpected musicians. Robyn says she put an ad in the paper about starting something similar in Nelson saying, “those under 60 need not apply”, and got over 80 responses.

After the most recent advert for male voices, the group had a “good response” with three new guys coming along – but they still want more. Robyn says there is absolutely no pressure and anyone interested can just come along and watch if to see what it’s all about. There is no audition and no scary solos. “The atmosphere is relaxed, it’s about having fun and enjoyment but we also like to make our performances sharp,” says Katie.

Glass plates reveal our past

After just 16 months Nelson Provincial Museum puts 18,000 images online Andrew Board For decades Nelson’s photographic history has been stored on wooden shelves deep in

the region’s museum, only a few lucky eyes seeing snapshots of our past. But that history is rapidly becoming available to the public, thanks to the Glass Plate

Gebhard Krewitt and Errol Shaw with one of the glass plates that they are photographing as part of the Glass Plate Negative Project at the Nelson Provincial Museum’s Isel Park headquarters. Photo: Andrew Board.

Negative Project which has already put a staggering 18,000 images from the shelves online. The glass plate project was started in November 2010 by the Nelson Provincial Museum and more than a year on its head Cliff Riordan says progress is going extremely well with 43,498 (as of last week) images now processed and 18,000 of those online. However with a total of 150,000 negatives on glass plates the project will run for at least another three years. The plates are simply photographed with a high quality digital camera, a Canon 5D mark II. Cliff says a cash donation from a local benefactor and funding from the lotteries has secured the project for some time which is hugely significant for the region. “This is a really important project, you’ll always hold on to the original collection, that is paramount, but digitisation allows us to record it and make it available for members of the public because physically handing the objects is risky. So by creating a digital copy it means the public can access the photos and enjoy them.” Images from the project are printed in Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly each week, which has prompted information from readers about some of the photos, many of which little is known about. “It’s a real buzz when people see a relative or place they recognise in the paper, it’s a

long process in being able to get that information but it really adds value to our collection. “A classic example was the motorcycle photo at the Richmond racecourse where we had the photo but no information and someone from the public had the same photo with all the information.” Cliff says each of the staff have their favourite photos, including one staff member who had been researching a lunatic asylum in Nelson. “She knew there was one but she wasn’t 100 per cent sure where it was but through the collection recently there was a photograph of the building taken from a distance and in context with the surrounding buildings and that was enough for her to figure it all out. The discovery was really amazing,” says Cliff. “It brings the region’s history to life.” Nelson Provincial Museum has one of the best photographic records of its region’s history in New Zealand and Cliff says the project to get these images online for everyone to view and use will be a huge positive for the region. Three volunteers have been working away at photographing and recording information attached to the photos before they are cleared by the collections curator and then posted online. The collection can be viewed by visiting www.museumnp.org.nz.

Hunt on for region's top bride NEWS IN BRIEF

Brides stuffing their wedding dresses into storage or listing them on TradeMe after a summer wedding may want to hold off for another few months as the Bride of the Year event has been confirmed for 2012. Bride of the Year gives all brides married over the past two years the opportunity to try on that dress again in a special evening dedicated to brides. Heather Harley has been organising the show as a fundraiser for Nelson Hospice for years now and says this year’s show will include entertainment along with

drinks and nibbles and plenty of high heels, make up, hair spray and beautiful dresses. The show also gives brides an opportunity to get into their dress again and strut their stuff with judges awarding one with the Bride of the Year crown. But Heather says the competition aspect is nothing compared to the fun brides have. “It’s a really great night, lots of enjoyment for the brides and all the people who turn up to watch.” The show is organised by volunteers,

meaning every cent raised from the show goes straight to the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust. The show is also supported by local businesses who donate items for the silent auction run on the night. This year’s show is being held at the Hope Community Church Hall on Ranzau Rd on Saturday July 14 from 7.30pm. If you would like more information or to register please call Heather on 545 1644 or 021 058 2396 or email heather. harley@xtra.co.nz.

RSA turns its hand to cooking comp

INFLUENZA

It seems servicemen, abroad or returned, can't get enough of Anzac biscuits. Kiwi and Australian soldiers in World War 1 were sent Anzac biscuits from home to help keep their spirits up and because they kept well during the journey from New Zealand to the other side of the world. And it seems they found a taste for the iconic treats. The Nelson RSA is hosting an Anzac biscuit baking competition to coincide with this year's Anzac Day celebrations and is inviting members of the public to submit their best biscuits. Barry Pont from Nelson RSA says the competition is intending to get more involvement from the community. "We've just undergone rebranding and part of our future is more engagement with the community. We would like to get more families to join the RSA." The competition is split into four age groups; up to intermediate school age, college school age, open and retired age and upwards. The biscuits will need to be delivered to the Ken Ching room at the Suburban Club on Friday, April 20 before 2pm. The biscuits will then be judged and packaged up for the Great Kiwi Breakfast on Anzac Day. Prize giving for the competition will be held after the breakfast on April 25. Entry forms for the competition can be picked up at the Nelson Suburban Club.

FIRE AT THE GLOBE: Nelson's historic Globe Hotel went up in flames in the early hours of Good Friday. Accommodation guests were all evacuated before the fire was put out by the Nelson Fire Service. Senior officer Craig Davies told Nelson Weekly a heat pump was the likely cause of the fire at the hotel on St Vincent St, near the Warehouse. The quiz is being held on "Black Friday", April 13 from 7pm at Nayland College. Coach Ant Holder says there are heaps of great prizes up for grabs. From My Desk Get ready to be wowed….. Meeting up with some girlfriends this week, I wanted to have a look at some dresses. I had in mind that I could throw on a jacket, dress it up with some boots and the extra layers would make the dress a winter outfit, but if I just had some lovely heels on, I would be sorted for these fabulous sunny autumn days, so I dashed into Portmans. Our lovely Manager at Portmans, Monique threw some looks together for me, a black and gold intricate lace dress, a jacquard full skirted dress, also an incredibly tailored outfit, all that I could get different looks from, so perfect for extending my wardrobe. The ideal solution and also dresses that are so reasonably priced, in fact on looking around the lovely store I excitedly find some other options……. Maybe next week! I hope you all have had a lovely Easter holiday weekend, enjoy your week and I look forward to meeting you here at Fashion Island.

Work will begin on a new crematorium at Gardens of the World in Hope, following a blessing of the ground ceremony early this morning. Tasman District Council gave funeral director and Gardens of the World owner Francis Day consent to go ahead with the gas-fired crematorium, before neighbours opposed the idea, tak-

ing it to the environment court. The court gave the project the green light and Tasman District Council Kaumatua Andy Joseph blessed the ground at 7am this morning with contractors starting work on the site soon after. Other crematoriums are based in Wakapuaka and Motueka.

Artist Fiona Sutherland shows off her freshly designed sculpture that has been placed at Saxton Field. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Art meets sport You’ve probably seen the sculpture on your way past Saxton Field, but the city’s latest piece of public art is just one of the first in a long line of displays that could make their way into the public’s view. Nelson City Council arts and heritage adviser Debbie Daniell-Smith says a fund is set aside, as part of the NCC art strategy, to encourage public art in every capital works project. When the spillway on Orphanage Creek at Saxton Field was complete, she went on the search to find an artist that could design a piece that best suited the area, and she couldn’t be happier with the results. “I think what is lovely about it is that you can see it when you go past. If you’re sitting on the bus you can see it. It’s fun,” says Debbie. Fiona Sutherland is the artist behind the Saxton Field piece and says she is proud to have another piece in such a significant part of Nelson. She also

created the popular “Goddess of Flight” piece at the Nelson Airport. Her latest artwork is made from darjit, a paper pulp material mixed with cement. Darjit, when wet, is able to be shaped similar to clay. It depicts two boys, from the orphanage that used to be suited in the location, in a boat with a collection of wildlife that can be found within the area, including the white heron, paradise duck and inanga fish. “To have another one in Nelson, where I live, is just fantastic. I feel very privileged,” says Fiona. Fiona started the piece around Christmas and the final pieces were put in place over the weekend, following its placement in the creek the week prior. The next site Debbie says would be a realistic option to combine public art with a capital works project is the upgrade of Rutherford Park, along with the gateway on Trafalgar St.

Gardening / This Week

TUESDAY 10 April 2012

Gr wing Things With Robyn Hollis

What a great week we had – Johnno had his fill of the Aussie surf and I did a really grand impersonation of a “beached whale” for two days or so before the need to move and spend money drove me from the beach. Weather was excellent, warm and sunny and the break was really good for us both. Spent last weekend being a Nana again so that was also very exciting – boy – they really grow fast these little people. I wonder why it is that when you are home and waiting for veges to produce you can be looking daily for some fruit, beans or a stray courgette to pop in the pot, and then the week you go away everything (including the weeds) decides to grow at an amazing pace. We came back to two giant courgettes– or zucchini, or even in one case a marrow, and have been eating them for a week stuffed with lamb mince, stir-fried with ginger and garlic, and there was still enough to make into a delicious Courgette and Apple Relish. Oh, all right I will give you the recipe! COURGETTE AND APPLE RELISH 750 g courgette, grated 1 1/2 tbsp sea salt 600 g apples, peeled and chopped ( I used Eve as it is a sweet apple) 4 med onions peeled and chopped 250 g raisins, chopped 150 g brown sugar 500 ml white wine vinegar 1/2 tsp garam masala 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp turmeric Place courgette in a colander or sieve, sprinkle with salt and stand for two hours. Rinse under cold water and drain on absorbent paper or through a sieve. Combine courgettes, apples, onions, raisins and vinegar in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer, covered for about 20 minutes or until the mixture is pulpy. Stir in the sugar and spices and bring to the boil stirring until the sugar is dissolved. About 20mins or until mixture is thick. Pour into hot sterilised jars and seal when cold. This recipe is from one of my favourite books called “Grow it-Cook it” and Sally is happy for me to pass on some of her tips and recipes.

• By now you should be well worn out, as the Easter break is a big one in a gardeners life. Autumn is a great time to plant all manner of things both in the flower and the vege garden. • There is still time to plant broad beans, carrots, cauli, brussel sprouts, winter lettuce (mizuna is a good one) cabbage and silverbeet. • In the flower garden you can sow alyssun, calendulas (winter marigolds), delphiniums, foxgloves, hollyhocks, lupins, pansies, poppies and viola to name a few. • It is now the time to sow new lawns, you have until about the end of May if it stays warm. It is also time to fertilise established lawns (I recommend Scotts Lawnbuilder) and check for bare patches which can be a sign of grass grubs feeding on the roots. Applications of diazinon granules (Lawn and Soil Guard, No Insects Lawnguard Prills, or Soil Insect killer are a few available). Water well after applying to get the poison down to where the grubs are, or apply before rain. • Give hedges a final trim this month before winter and check for mites and mealy bug in some (use a spraying oil – Neem or Conqueror oil will work here) and psyllids in some of the pittosporum varieties. Trimming hedges removes the affected shoots and subsequent new growth should be relatively healthy. • It is also time to plant strawberries. If you plant in April you should be picking fruit in November. They need an open sunny spot with lots of well-rotted compost and are best planted into ridges or raised beds as they need good drainage. Strawberries also do well in containers and just need a good potting mix and extra food as they start to set fruit. Check your local garden centre for available varieties. Hope you all had a great Easter – I was making quince jelly for most of it but we did get the Magnolia planted.

Each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in early May Nelson Weekly is printing the nine finalists of the Jens Hansen Love Story competition. This week we have William and Kathleen’s story. My partner Willy and I used to be just friends who liked to hang out. I was visiting my best friend in Fairlie, over an hour’s drive from home, and on my way home I crashed into a bank on Mt Michael, flipped my car, and narrowly missed going off the cliff by two metres! I was unable to move or barely talk, but Willy was the first person I could think of and I wanted to see him. I asked my friend to ring Willy, and when he heard how close I was to dying he realised he was in love with me and instantly rushed to be by my side. He stayed with me in the hospital, and when I left he insisted I stay with him, as I was not allowed to be left alone. While I was off work re c ove r i ng , he spent all his time look-

ing after me - even though he was working 6pm to 6am shifts. He would come straight home from work, have two hours sleep, and then spend the whole day looking after me - keeping me distracted from the nightmare of the crash. Towards the end of the first week of my recovery Willy admitted his feelings to me, and how he had felt when he heard about my crash. I tried to deny my feelings for him as I planned to move to Australia in a few months, and had already paid for my tickets etc. However, I could not deny that I had fallen in love with Willy, so I cancelled my move to Australia so I could be with him. We have been happily in love ever since, recently engaged and currently planning our wedding

Pool champs head to Nelson Nelson is gearing up to host the 2012 Clubs New Zealand Junior 8 ball champs at the Suburban Club this weekend. Six teenagers from the Nelson region along with around 20 competitors from around the country will be putting their skills to task. Nelson player Tim Shanaher will be defending his title, while brother Mike also made it through to the playoffs along with Cheyenne CaseConner who got third in the Kellaway pairs out of a field of 30 players.

Britney Kidd, David Miles and Xandie Alford will also be competing. A big draw card to the event will be the presence of NZ champion Craig Steinnetz, he will be there to encourage the players and also hosting speedball challenge the champ while the games are waiting to be played. The tournament kicks off with a get together for parents, coaches and players on Friday April 13 with the tournament starting at 9am on Saturday and Sunday and finals played on Monday.

Got a Sport Story?

They both have a much different approach to representing New Zealand at inline hockey, but Nelson brothers Josh and Devon Stove are raring to go ahead of this weekend’s five match series in their respective age brackets. Josh, 16, has been named as the assistant captain for the New Zealand 16 and under side. This is the third year the Nelson College student will represent New Zealand. He will, again, be looking to cement his spot in the side for future tournaments, including the Junior Olympics which will be held in the United States. The location of the Junior Olympics also plays some significance as Josh is looking to join the pro ranks once he has left school and it will be his first chance to check out life in USA. He says professional inline hockey players can get paid around US$70,000 a season, so there would be no pressure to try out for ice hockey. “I want to go over after Year 13, so I need to make sure I’m in that squad for the Junior Olympics.” His younger brother Devon has been selected in the first ever New Zealand 12 and under squad. The 12 year old says his focus is just on one thing: “Winning,” he says. “I want a gold medal.” He will also be assistant captain. Both teams will play their Australian counterparts five times at the Oceania Inline Hockey Championship in New Plymouth, a tournament which sees all of the New Zealand teams competing over the course of five days.

Ysobella Spiteri and Nathan Tonk represent Nelson’s young talent at the DanceSport Nelson Easter Championships held at Trafalgar Center over the Weekend. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Dancing up a storm Over the long weekend dancers from Nelson got a chance to foot it with the best from around the country and abroad as DanceSport Nelson held their 47th Easter Competition. Thirty-five competitors of all levels took to the floor at an utterly transformed Trafalgar Centre to show their off their moves in Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue among others. Jean Brough and her husband Jim started the event at the old YMCA in Bridge St in 1966, since then it has gone from strength to strength attracting some pretty famous feet. For the past few years, including last weekend Stefano Olivieri was on hand to give a floor show and tips to the locals. Stefano is well known for his two

Dancing With the Stars wins in New Zealand and he is also a 7 times Australian Professional New Vogue Champion. For the young Nelson pairing of Ysobella Spiteri and Nathan Tonk the experience of dancing in the competition has been invaluable for a number of reasons. “It’s amazing! You see their footwork and pick up new ideas to take back to your dance teacher and say 'I saw this couple doing something like this, can we try it',” says Ysobella. Organiser Sandra Maxfield says it was a very successful weekend. “It’s fantastic, everyone has been very supportive, we’ve had good numbers of people coming through the door and everyone looks amazing. It was also a chance for our local dancers to be inspired."
