Prince Charles, with Nelson mayor Rachel Reese meets Nelsonians on Trafalgar St. Photo: Evan Barnes.
Nelson goes crazy for Prince Like many Nelsonians before them, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have strolled through the Saturday Market in Nelson. At the market, the royal couple met vendors and made a few purchases including a Kiwiana pottery bowl and a wooden caterpillar toy - Charles even scored a jar of Pic’s Peanut Butter. Alan Dickson from The Smokehouse in Mapua was one of the lucky vendors
that got to meet the royals. “Charles seemed like a great guy, you can tell he is a man of the people.” The royal couple arrived at the Cathedral steps in Nelson at 11.15am, where they were greeted by Nelson mayor Rachel Reese and iwi representatives. They then walked down a packed Trafalgar St to meet and greet hundreds of Nelsonians who had lined the street to meet them, including a corgi dog ap-
propriately named George. “He got to lick the Prince’s hand,” said George’s owner Hannah Petley. “Prince Charles asked if he was a friendly corgi and I said, ‘yes, he is’.” Kids were pressed up against the barred fences, pushing their heads through the gaps. Charles and Camilla took their time to talk to as many people as they could, with several people giving them flowers.
Naina Mahto was one of the many locals lined up along Trafalgar St. “I thought it was great, there was a big buzz around town, people were really getting into it.” The royal couple then walked through the market before Camilla headed to Nelson’s World of Wearable Art museum and Prince Charles to the Cawthron Institute. - With NZME.

“I’m pretty much neutral on it. I think they need to be restricted after the 5th.”
“I’m a fan of them, people just need to respect other people living around them.”
“Often the fireworks people buy are pretty rubbish, so a big public display would be good.”
“They should be banned. I’ve got animals that were beside themselves and I had debris hitting my roof. There should be one big public display.”
Prince meets former nanny
Active Dads head to mega slide Nelson fathers are invited to take their kids, under the age of six, to the Mega Slide at Tahananui this Saturday between 9am-10.45am. Entry is free but the event will also be helping to support the Food Bank this Christmas, with each family asked to donate a can of food. More information is available on Facebook or people can call 539 0019. The event offers a great morning, teaching children the importance of giving.
It had been 60 years since Prince Charles had seen his former nanny - but the pair were united in a chance encounter at the weekend. The heart-warming and impromptu meeting between the future king and the woman who looked after him as a baby, 92-year-old Jacqui Botting, took place in Nelson on Saturday. New Zealand-born Jacqui looked after Charles and his sister Anne in the early 1950s at Clarence House, before returning home to marry, the Daily Mail reported. She now lives in a Nelson retirement home

And his nanny was waiting outside - clutching a card signed by Queen Elizabeth as well as Prince Philip and Charles - for a chance to see him after his visit. After being alerted to her presence, Prince Charles took the time to talk with her and affectionately touched her arm as he asked how she was. A spokesman for the Prince said he had been “absolutely delighted”. Jacqui later said: “He remembered me, didn’t he? It was very nice.” - NZME.

Andrew Board A group of graduating doctors say their year at Nelson Hospital will make them better at their job – which is good news considering more than half are staying on after their graduation. Of the seven who were completing their sixth, and final, year of medical training in Nelson, four have accepted jobs here. They say doing the final year on-the-job is a great way of putting their book work into practice, while being supervised by more experienced doctors. Student doctors can be a burden for busy doctors in bigger hospitals – not in Nelson. The graduating doctors say it is the perfect place to learn. “The reason that a lot of us chose to come here is that it’s very hands-on,” says one of the graduating doctors, Rachel Lines. “Everywhere you go is based on learning to be a doctor and doing everything that a doctor is doing. But here [Nelson] you get to do a lot more and it’s a lot more hands-on. Everyone knows everyone.” The student doctors celebrated their impending graduation from Christchurch Clinical School with a dinner on Friday

Pharmacy burglar appears in court: Following the pharmacy burglary that appeared in last week’s Nelson Weekly, a 30-year-old man has been charged in relation to burglaries at the Queen Street Pharmacy in Richmond on October 28 and a pharmacy in Nelson on October 23. The man appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday. Distressed swimmer was a seal: Police, Nelson Surf Life Saving Club, the Coastguard and a helicopter were called to the Port on Thursday night in search of a seal. Police said an informant on the Port Hills called in at 7:30, saying there was a swimmer in the water near the entrance to the Cut, being dragged out to sea and calling for help. An hour later, another member of the public came forward, saying they saw a seal in the same location during the same time. With the light fading, the search was called off at 9 pm, police coming to the conclusion that the swimmer was, in fact, a seal. Pedestrian hit and killed by car: Sergei Andrew McDowell, 21, was killed after being struck by a car while walk along the state highway near Mapua on Friday night. The driver of the vehicle involved

was uninjured in the incident and was helped by police at the scene. Just before the crash, police had received phone calls from a concerned motorist about a man on a bike, who was riding in a way that “caused some concern”. A bicycle was located a short distance from where the pedestrian was struck and killed and enquiries reveal that the cyclist and pedestrian are one and the same person.

Drone shot down over speedway: A drone filming the Nelson Speedway last week was shot from the sky. Sherlock Vision and the Nelson Speedway Association were shocked by the shooting of a drone at the speedway’s popular family-friendly event on October 31. “We were concerned when the live feed from our drone suddenly stopped towards the end of the fireworks display at the end of the speedway event,” says Sherlock Vision co-owner Geoff Sherlock. “Fortunately, we were able to manually land it away from spectators. The outcome could have been so much worse if the drone had landed amongst the crowd or if the shot fired had hit someone.” Nelson Police are currently investigating the incident. Pic’s success spreads

Police open day a ‘huge success’ The Nelson Police Station opened its doors to the public on Sunday. The open day saw hundreds of families lining up to go into the jail cells, challenge themselves on the police obstacle course, hop into police cars and fire trucks, check out the police taser, riot gear, and guns, watch firemen

rip open a car, meet Pyro the police dog and many more activities. Two of the more hard-out participants were 10 year-old Tor Vanderplas and 11 year-old Riley Smithers. “It was pretty fun, but he beat me by three seconds,” says Tor pointing at Riley. Although fun, 10 year-old Levi Scott says he learnt a lot. “I
liked how you can come along and see all the things you can do and I think I might be in the police when I’m older,” says Levi. Police communications manager Barbara Dunn says the day was a hit. “It went fantastic, it was a huge success from our perspective, with lots of engagement, lots
of questions, lots of people trying things out and getting information.” “The public really enjoyed it, we’ve had enormous feedback from people on the day, coming up and chatting to us and via social media.” Most of the kids who went say the obstacle course and police cells were their favourite parts.
Pic’s Peanut Butter has been named Nelson’s top business for 2015. The Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards were held on Friday night, with Pic’s taking home the Supreme Business Award, as well as the Economic Development Agency Large Business Award and the Chamber of Commerce Innovation Award. More than 300 guests attended the awards evening at Nelson’s Rutherford Hotel, which has now been running for nearly 30 years. Other winners included Nelson Tree Specialists, which took out two awards – the SME Award and Investing in People and Skills. Hop Federation Brewery received the Start Up Award and Ursula Hair Design won the Service Excellence Award. Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dot Kettle says the awards had once again highlighted the diverse range of businesses and depth of business talent in the region. “All the businesses who entered this year can be very proud of their success and the contribution they are making to our business community,” says Dot. Special tribute was made to long-time judge Robyn Reid who had her final year judging the awards.

Alan got involved with Habitat for Humanity around 10 years ago after Hurricane Katrina, and helped rebuild houses on the Gulf Coast. “I was looking for something meaningful to do when I retired four years ago,” he says. “And then I found the Global Village tour.” “It’s a wonderful experience, and a positive life-altering experience. We have a mission to break the poverty cycle by providing quality affordable housing for all.” The two families who have been selected for the houses will be involved with the build, as part of the 500 hours they are required to give to the project. Alan says it’s great for the global volunteers to be able to meet and learn about the families they are building the homes for. Rob says the families should be able to move in sometime in the New Year.

Petrolheads flock to V 4 & Rotary With bases booming and engines revving, the V 4 & Rotary South Island Champs came to a close on Sunday night. The weekend was petrolhead heaven with drag racing at the Motueka Airfield, a Show and Shine competition and a jet car for a bit of extra excitement. John McMillan brought his Mazda RX7 series 4 all the way up from Christchurch. “It’s probably one of the best weekends, I look forward
watch the vehicles go head-to-head and check out all the different cars and motorcycles. Saturday’s Show and Shine featured over 50 cars from a variety of classes being judged and displayed in the Saxton stadium. Car owners spent hours beforehand, ensuring their cars were pristine for the judges and the hundreds of Nelsonians who packed into the Saxton Stadium. The day included DB drag racing, Dyno runs, a jet
to it annually.” John has towed his car up for the weekend three years in row and says it’s always a great event. Saturday’s racing saw around 50 cars and motorcycles lined up on the drag strip to fight for the title of the fastest vehicle. The event gave car enthusiasts an excuse to do smokey burnouts and prove they had the best engine on the tarmac. Around 4000 people showed up to
car fire show and the official prizegiving. 4 & Rotary promoter, Azhar Bhamji, says it was the biggest turnout they’ve had in Nelson. “The event has been amazing, we’ve had more cars here than the last two years.” Azhar says he hopes V 4 & Rotary will be back for more events next year. “This is the end of our three year deal with the venue as well as with the drag racing, but let’s not say that this is that last you’ll see of us.”

‘Story grandad’ part of a winning programme Kate Russell Every Friday morning, retired Nelson man Paul Lunberg hops on his bike and cycles from his home in Stepneyville to read to bookloving kids at Victory Square Kindergarten. He is one of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association’s ‘story grans’ – or granddads in this case. There are over 50 of them who volunteer at kindergartens around the region, and it is an idea that was born here and is now catching on in other parts of the country. “It’s an absolute delight,” says Paul, who has now been reading at the kindergarten for four years. “It’s a lovely thing for older people to do to reconnect with children.” Paul, who used to be a secondary school teacher at Nayland College, says he has two grandchildren himself, who live in England. “I love kids and it’s nice to be able to enjoy them again. I get quite a buzz out of it,” he says. It’s clear to see the children love him too – as he goes to

He says he got into being a story granddad through a friend who was already doing it at Victory Square Kindergarten. “When she told me about it, I thought ‘that’s really neat,’ so I made contact with the
association and they said ‘fabulous – when can you start?’” Paul goes to the library himself and chooses five new books every week to read to the children, who huddle around him eagerly to check out what new books he has brought in. Margaret Bartlett from the Kindergarten Association
says that the story gran programme has been going for around 15 years now and it has proved to be very beneficial for teachers, parents and especially children. The storygrans are able to read to children uninterrupted, and read and talk one on one to children who have little experience with books.

Halloween in the Park, Wednesday, November 4: Organiser Abigail Robinson says the event managed to raise $1050 and that the whole afternoon wouldn’t have been possible without their 24 “amazing volunteers.” Next year Abigail is planning to improve the event with more activities, decorations and music for those who attend. Monster Garage Sale, Tuesday, November 3: Saturday’s Monster Garage Sale was a roaring success, says organiser Stephen Halcrow. The charity garage sale drew a crowd of over a thousand people, raising over $1,500 for the Nelson Hospice. Items left over at the end of the day were donated to the Koha Shed and Stephen says he is looking at making it an annual or biannual event. Square Dancing, Tuesday, October 27: Nelson Square and Round Dance Club have received interest from the public after their article in the Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly. Club member Chris Hogarth says it is great to get their name out there and hopefully people will keep them in mind when they are looking for a fun, social activity to be involved in. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Chris on 544 0595 or 027 722 5846.

Part way through, two members of the public disrupted the commemoration ceremony, a male riding his bicycle part way round the cenotaph, while a female attempted to speak through the microphone. “Great service, great turnout. Yes, we had a wee interruption, but as I reminded people, that was the freedom that our forebears fought for and as distasteful as it is, that’s life,” says Derek.

Coastguard Nelson scoops a top award: So very well deserved! Thanks Guys! I love Nelson Tasman. Guy Fawkes was held over the weekend: Three nights through the week, fireworks were being let off at 5am and woke my two year old. Who thinks 5am is the perfect time to get your fireworks out? The beach was littered with fireworks on Friday. Maybe it is time to ban them since some people obviously lack the common sense to use them properly and clean up after themselves. Nikole Berkett. I just find it unecessary for people to be letting them off after 1011pm on a weeknight. You've had onetwo hours of darkness by then. lol. Do it earlier. Sharon Tarapipi Pi. Hate them. Julia Clark. Two heritage houses in Stoke are in need of some new volunteers to help keep their doors open. Isel House and Broadgreen House rely of groups of volunteers to do everything from greeting visitors, taking entry fees and providing information about the house – but Nelson City Council says they need more people to help. Manager of Heritage Facilities Ian Littleworth says that without volunteers it would not be possible for them to open their doors for the local community and visitors to enjoy. “We have some amazing volunteers already, but need more,” he says. “People come and go, so we really need to renew our volunteer bases.” Their biggest push is Isel House, which has been cared for and manned by a small group of volunteers during the past 16 years. “Isel House is going through a bit of a transition at the moment and volunteer numbers have dipped, so we want to make sure we can get it up and running for the summer,” he
Current volunteer Julie Lackner, with Maria Anderson from Nelson City Council, at Isel House, which needs more volunteers to help keep it open. Photo: Kate Russell. says. “We’d like to open it more, so the more volunteers we get – the more we can open.” Julie Lackner, who has been a volunteer at Isel House for four years, says she loves giving her time to volunteering at the historic house. “I love it,” she says. “It’s a beautiful old house.” Ian says that Broadgreen House has a stronger volunteer base, but they could still do with more as it is open every day of the week. “We have two quite different but equally amazing houses that showcase what Nelson was
like back in the day. It would be great if locals got behind them, and we encourage them to visit and support our heritage houses.” Maria Anderson, who is taking enquires from potential volunteers, says she would especially love to hear from people who can volunteer at Isel House during weekends, and she would be interested in hearing from people who have ideas for other uses for the building. For more information call Maria on (03) 548 2649 or email maria.anderson@ncc.govt.nz.

Top bushmen compete for loggers crown marked on both speed and quality of work. As well as completing their activity, competitors also had to run the course and finish by chocking up a log before the next person in the team could begin. For the second year running, team The Outsiders took out the Chockermans Race with members Nigel Kelly, Sarah Heath, Travis Heath and Jesse Heath proud to receive the Winston Allnut Memorial Trophy. “This is my second year and my second time winning,” says Sarah. “It’s a family thing. Sweat, steam, sawdust and strong competition made for a successful logging weekend at Higgins Park. For the fifth year running, Pigeon Valley Steam Museum hosted the weekend which featured the Chockermans Race for competing teams on Saturday and the Steam Logging Spectacular on Sunday, replicating how logging in Nelson’s forests was done in the old days. The museums overhead skyline and steam winch were originally used to haul logs from the other side of the valley, but when it fell into disuse and was considered unsafe, it came to reside at Higgins Park. A few years ago the logging industry, especially those of the younger generation, expressed an interest in seeing the old machinery revitalised. Thanks to a number of logging-related businesses and people like Rex Kelly, a fourth generation logger and owner of Kelly logging, the Loggers Sports and Steam Logging Spectacular weekend welcomes local and visiting teams, as well as the public, for a celebration of the logging industry. There were around 12 teams of four competing on Saturday, formed from various logging crews throughout the Top of the South. The Chockermans Race featured four different logging- related activities for each team member, each one being

The idea to hold the show first struck organiser Melanie Edwards when she was listening to her partner and fellow truck drivers talk about the lack of opportunities available for them to have a good catch up.
There will, of course, be plenty of food, predominantly provided by Stoke School, including hot chips, cake and cold drinks, along with a coffee stand and ice cream truck. The Nelson Truck Show will also be putting on some kid’s activities with zorb balls, mini jeeps and a bouncy castle, and when you’ve finished exploring and want a break, Stoke School will be providing musical entertainment with their Kapa Haka, choir and band groups performing from, you guessed it, the back of a truck.

Homebrew conference in Nelson The perfect beer nerd’s weekend is coming to Nelson, with New Zealand’s first ever homebrewers’ conference to run alongside Marchfest next year. The conference is the idea of three passionate local home-brewers, and is already proving to be a hit, with tickets already selling quickly and attracting interest from as far away as Australia. One of the organisers, Mike Stringer, who has been home-brewing for 10 years, says it will be a “real grass-roots affair” and boasts an impressive line-up of speakers. Mike says that people can really make a weekend of it, with three days of beer-lover’s events planned. There will be a regional tour and brew competition on the Friday, Marchfest on Saturday, and a daylong conference on Sunday. Yeast management and tasting beer to detect off-flavours are just some the subjects covered in the conference. “It’ll be a huge weekend of brewing, socialising and learning,” says Mike. The brew competition, which has been named ‘BrewMania’, will be a twist on the average home-brewing competition. 80 lucky punters will be able to do the judging and it will be open to 320 entries. “We hope to make the event an annual fixture for home-brewers nationwide,” Mike says. “With all the hops growing here, we’ve got a massive asset.” Mike says the support from sponsors and speakers has been amazing. “We have already secured ‘brewing rockstars’ Dr Chris White of White Labs Yeast and Mike ‘Tasty’ McDole from the Brewing Network in the United States,” he says. Tickets to the conference are being sold via a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMe. If people want to find out more information about the event, or want to take part, they can visit the website at www.nzhc.nz.

TWILIGHT GALA FUN: Joel Hawkins, 9, takes his Sumo Wrestling seriously during the Wakefield Twilight Gala on Saturday evening. The annual gala is the school’s major fundraising event and, along with plenty of food and entertainment, featured some great activities to keep the kids entertained including motorbike rides, pony rides, a petting zoo, bouncy castle, gumboot toss, horizontal bungy and an inflatable climbing wall. A total amount hasn’t yet been calculated but gala coordinator Sonia Emerson believes that it was the best gala the school has run yet. The destination of the proceeds will be a new outdoor area with a steering committee, made up of students, parents and teachers, researching and deciding on what the area will incorporate. Organisers wish to thank sponsors, the public and everyone else who helped make their gala a success. Photo: Jessie Johnson.

Funding needed for refugee swimming lessons Funding is needed to keep a water safety programme afloat that helps former refugees in Nelson and Tasman enjoy, and stay safe around, the region's beaches, rivers and swimming pools. The majority of refugees who settle in Nelson don't have any knowledge of water safety because they come regions that don't have beaches, rivers or lakes. Victory Community Centre's Katie Hughes indentified a need to teach these new Nelsonians water safety and initiated the programme with the help from Red Cross, the Richmond Aquatic Centre, Port Nelson, Todd Foundation and a loyal group of volunteers. But the funding for the programme, which started at the beginning of this year, is running out, and Richmond Aquatic Centre swim school manager Lisa Stove is desperate to keep it going. Lisa says the programme has received a great response from the refugee community and plays a big role in keeping them safe around water. "We held the first session earlier this year and 40 of them turned up. It's been making a huge difference to these people and we'd love to keep it going. "We have ladies who come along and they are frightened about even getting into the water with a life jacket. A lot of them come from landlocked countries like Bhutan and they've never been in water deeper than their waist, so it's not surprising they are so scared." Lisa says the water safety programme covers boat safety, fitting and wearing life jackets, swimming in clothing and learning to float and retrieve someone from the water. They also get "thrown in the wave pool to get a real live beach experience" and are encouraged to take 'learn to swim' classes. Refugee Bijay Pradhan says the classes are "really helping us develop our swimming skills, and helps us survive. It’s a great way to hang out with friends, too." At 51, Bishnu Adhikari is learning to swim for the first time and says "it means I can help my kids learn too". "Swimming is important for everybody in New Zealand. I love it." Lisa says the funding is needed to cover the costs of a coordinator, transport to the pool and pool admission and swim school staff which the Richmond Aquatic Centre provides at a discount.
Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre instructor Lisa Stanley, (back centre) and volunteer Graham Donnelly, back second right, with Bhutanese and Nepal former refugees, from left in boat, Khem Pyakurel, Pragha Pradhan and Ashish Niraula, back from left, Deependra Mangar, Anmol Thapa, Susmita Magar and Bishnu Adhikari, enjoy a water safety lesson at the centre last Wednesday. SPORT Mountainbikers take on Kaiteriteri Locally Owned and Operated

The Nelson Mountain Bike Club held two of its series races last week with round three of the Evening World Series Super D in the Maitai Valley on Thursday and round four of the Cross Country Series at Kaiteriteri on Sunday. The Super D numbers, although still impressive at 105 riders, were down on the previous two events in the series, probably due to the more challenging course through the Maitai and Supplejack tracks. Under-15 riders began their runs first with Max Singleton showing good pace to take a class win with a time of 11min 45sec. Cameron Jones showed it was no fluke he was fastest on the down hill section of the recent Milk and Honey Race by winning under-17 category. The women were next out of the blocks showing they had the skills to match the challenge of this tough run. Master 1 rider Amanda Pearse almost broke the 12 minute mark with the fastest run to keep ahead of Olivia Johnston and Alice Baker. Master 3 winner Nick Kirby set the new “time to beat” with an 11min 4sec. Dean Fulton showed he is not only very quick on a road bike but has the skills to ride a tough downhill at speed to win Masters 2 in a time of 10min 24sec Masters 1 Maestro Kurt Lancaster showed why he is Nelson’s current Top Gun with his 9min 59sec the first run of the night to break the magical 10 minute mark. This exceptional pace laid down a challenge to the 14 senior riders that followed, but it was not until the very last run of the evening that it
was beaten. Loui Harvey managed to knock 0.3 seconds off Kurt’s time to take the nights overall crown and claim Super D three champion status. Sunday bought the area’s cross country elite across to Kaiteriteri where the course consisted of a serious climb at the start, followed by a tight twisting single track and some technical downhill. Henry Jaine set a frenetic pace, closely followed by Chris Sharland who had claimed a second in the previous day’s Source to Sea. Henry set a consistent 18 minute lap time for his five laps that no-one else could match, to take the overall. Cameron Jones posted the second fastest lap times which gave him a comfortable win in the under-17 section. Tasman de Leeus put down a super quick final lap to overtake Connor Mcleod to win girls under-17 class with Emma Bateup taking the female title in this age group. Possibly the most exciting battle of the day was the senior woman section, with Katie Roddiss staying just ahead of Hannah Feely until the last lap when Hannah found something extra and put down her quickest lap last to take the class win. Zoe King completed her three laps in 1hr 6min to win Masters 1 ahead of Suzie Wood. Kiel Boynton’s travel from Blenheim was rewarded with a win in Masters 1, while Jake Stow claimed the Masters 2 win with some very quick times for his three laps. Brenda Clapp was the Masters 3 women's winner, Cliff Bowman won the Masters 3 men with Warren Algie showing he still has some pace in his legs to take the 60-plus group.

Record number for Nelson sea swim The popularity of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series continued on Thursday when a record 162 swimmers took the plunge in the opening race of the 2015-2016 series. Garin College student Thomas Heaton showed good early season speed to win the long course race held over 800m in 8min 38sec. Thomas led a group of teenaged swimmers home with Waimea College triathlete Hayden Squance second 18 seconds back and last year's series winner Luke Kelly third in 9min 27sec. Caitlin Delany was the fastest female, finishing fifth overall to win the 16-19 age group in 9min 34sec. Jody Keefe-Laing was the first non-teenager to finish, winning the men's 20-29 age group in 9min 44sec. Veterans Hamish Neill (50-59), Jon Linyard (40-49) and Simon Kneebone (40-49) were next. The sea swims are held every Thursday through the summer. For more information and full results go to nelsonseaswims. co.nz

Nelson College claim sports team of the year
The national champion Nelson College football team claimed further honours on Sunday when they were named Team of the Year at the Tasman Secondary Schools Sports Awards held at the Theatre Royal in Nelson. Nelson College First XI was a deserved winner of the top team award after claiming their first national secondary schools football title at Saxton Field in September. One of their many star players, Atkin Kaua, was also honoured when he was named Sportsman of the Year. Atkin was a worthy winner following his MVP performance in Nelson's historic win and scoring 10 goals for Nelson Suburbs in the Mainland Premier League. The Solomon Islands' mid-fielder was also named in the Canterbury United squad.
One of the football team's cocaptains, Matt Tod-Smith, says they were honoured to receive the award with so many "good teams and athletes nominated". The award capped a memorable season that started with a "dream" to win the national championships. "We knew we had a good team and could do well at nationals, but the idea of winning it was a dream," Matt says. "It's all been pretty surreal." Nelson College for Girls' underwater hockey star Jessica Sturrock won Sportswoman of the Year, just days after being named the top sportswoman at her school. Jessica, 18, captained her school to its first national underwater hockey championships in 21 years and represented New Zealand under-23 at the world championships in Spain where they fin-
ished fifth. Nelson College students Ben Anderson (basketball and touch), Timu Faingaanuku (rugby), Eugene Cech (skiing), Matai McGuinniety (swimming) and Kit Vining (underwater hockey) won awards in their sports. Nelson College for Girls students Tali Uia (beach volleyball), Geena Gross (football), Ruby Friend (climbing), Abbey Franklin (netball), Sasha Cullum (rowing), Louise Stevenson (shooting), Hannah McKay-Wright (skiing) and Annie Grimes (weightlifting) were the award winners in their sports. Nayland College's Tayla and Connor Nesbitt won awards for table tennis while Kalani Sheridan won an award for cross-country. The ASB People's Choice Award was won by Nelson College basketballer, Max Darling.
As we are all aware, we have some fantastic fishing opportunities right here on our very doorstep, here in 'Sunny Nelson’. Every now and again it's worth venturing out a little further and experience something different. One of my all time favourites is picturesque Fiordland. Over Labour Weekend we took a trip to Doubtful Sound, staying in a DOC hut on Secretary Island. To get to Deep Cove, the gateway to Doubtful Sound, you first have to cross Lake Manapouri and then tow the boat across Wilmot Pass on the other side of the lake. The journey over Wilmont is an adventure on its own, with waterfalls, sheer cliffs along a steep narrow windy gravel road that often has snow at the peak. A few days earlier there was heavy

rain which flooded the bridge across the Mica Burn. I might be good for telling stories, but believe me, if something blows out in Fiordland, it truly is impressive. The environment below the water in Fiordland is as unique as its acclaimed landscape above. Due to the tea-stained fresh water layer you can see black corals in less than 40m of water. Over the next five days we gorged ourselves on crayfish, caught blue cod as big as a dive tank and pulled grouper out of 40m depth, but what really makes the place special is the total remoteness and untamed but fragile wilderness and then to be able to share it with the local population of penguins, whales, dolphins and birds.
