Makos the real deal?

Club members told to pay up Suburban Club members have been told the club is in financial trouble and they each need to pay a $100 donation to help keep it afloat.

In a letter dated September 4, the chairman and president of the club wrote to each of its 4800 members advising them that the club is in “substantial arrears” to the Inland Revenue Department and other creditors.

Club chairman Ross Strawbridge told Nelson Weekly the situation was “gutting” and that the general manager of the club was

no longer in the job.

Included in the letter was an invoice for $100 and the plea for cash has also been promoted over the sound system in the club over the past week.

But the board says it’s confident of paying off the $300,000 it owes by the end of September and has received a donation of more than $128,000 by one club member.

“In light of this, the board has given an undertaking to our bank and major creditors that all of our remaining creditors will be

It also said that the board became aware of the arrears in August as the debt had not been disclosed in monthly management reports. They say the club is trading profit-

ably after some cost cutting measures.

Ross says the money has to be raised by the end of September. “We have to, there isn’t an option. The members want the club to survive so we have to do it.”

He says around 500 members have already paid the donation and they would need another 4000 to follow their lead. “We just need to get this hole that has been created cleaned up and we will be fine moving forward. Because of the loyalty of the club members we will pull through.”

Croquet season officially opened Nelson’s croquet season was officially opened on Saturday, with mayor Aldo Miccio playing the first “hoop” of the season.

Members from Nelson’s three clubs – Richmond, Riwaka and Nelson Hinemoa – were at the Nelson club on Saturday to celebrate the start of the season.

The association is hosting several key tournaments this year, including the NZ National Golf Croquet champs in December.

City could see more parking wardens People shopping in the CBD should expect to see parking wardens out in force after the Nelson Weekly learnt yesterday that parking enforcement could be outsourced.

A recent report into the Nelson City Council’s resource management has recommended that parking enforcement be contracted out.

This will mean that the people in charge of giving out tickets and monitoring time limits will be employed to do so by a private company, which could mean more wardens on the street, checking parking tickets.

While the likely cost of having a privately owned company do the job was not revealed, Nel-

11 cruise ships coming to town

The World is cruising to Nelson this summer.

And the Europa, Seabourn Sojuorn and Hanseatic.

The four cruise ships have confirmed that they will visit the region this summer and Nelson Tasman Tourism expects that trend to continue.

NTT international marketing manager Loren Heaphy says four cruise ships have booked to come to Nelson this summer with another seven the following year. Each of the ships carries around 400 passengers and is seen as at the “high end” of the market.

To be allowed on the Europa ship – which is arriving here on Boxing Day this year – each passenger must have a net worth of at least $5 million, with each cabin worth around $300,000 and monthly costs at $30,000.

Loren says these passengers spend a lot of money and NTT has worked hard for several years to work with local operators and to develop a package that suits their needs.

ships after last summer and she sees the market growing over the next few years. “Last week we hosted one of the largest inbound tour agencies in the region to help with cruise ship package development and the agent was very impressed with what the region has to offer.”

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the region will benefit from an increasing number of ships visiting the region. “Nelson Tasman Tourism and Port Nelson have done a great job in helping to attract more cruise ships to our region. My aim is to work with local retailers, Uniquely Nelson, Port Nelson and Nelson Tasman Tourism to see if we can put together some packages that encourage visitors to stay within the CBD, and revitalise that economy.”

Collection tins rattle for refuge

The Car Company’s September drive for the women’s and children’s refuge has begun, with a street appeal collecting the first thousand dollars last week.

The Car Company last year teamed up with the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge to help raise its profile in the community and some much-needed money.

It was so successful – raising more than $18,000 – that they’ve decided to do it again this year. The Car Company has organised collection days every Wednesday this month from 11am to 2pm and a quiz night at the end of the month.

The first of the collection days was held last Wednesday with members of the Tasman Makos rugby team also lending their hand, helping to collect money. The Car Company’s marketing manager, Belinda Koloamatangi, says it was great to be out on the street and seeing the support in the community for the organisation.

“Most people were really generous and the Makos were great, they got right in there and people were happy to reach in their pockets to support the cause.”

The collection will also be held on September 11 and 25 outside BNZ on Trafalgar St and on September 18 in Sundial Square in Richmond.

Car Company owner Shane Drummond says he’s rapt to be able to support the refuge again this year and is keen to hear from anyone who may want to donate items for the quiz night on September 27.

Warwick Lampp, the chief returning officer for Electionz which runs the election on behalf of Nelson City Council, says he would never recommend someone to break the law but if the voting packs are sent back correctly filled in then they are none the wiser and the vote is counted.

Fashion Island gets a makeover After six years as Fashion Island, the shopping centre will be known as Morrison Square from next month.

The change in name coincides with a fresh look that is currently underway at the shopping centre.

Centre manager Nicola Dolan says that the new name has been in the planning for over a year, and says that the heritage of the Morrison St entrance, and better reflects the current retail offering.

The 30 odd participants were also there to celebrate Father’s Day and it was a huge success says club member and event organiser Adrian Curtis.

“It’s great because you can get out there and have fun in any road car, with no racing experience at all.”

Sunday’s Motokana style event was the first time it had been held on a tarseal surface, making for a great day of tyre spinning and fast lap times says Adrian. “It was a great day with a variety of

Nelson carpentry apprentice Andrew Higgins has been named the Upper South Island Region Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 Apprentice of the Year.

The 23 year old, employed by Dusty Builders Ltd in Nelson and trained through NMIT, impressed judges who say Andrew interviewed well and has strong overall industry knowledge for someone so young in the trade.

“We were extremely impressed at how proud Andrew was to work for the company he represented - his passion and drive to be successful was very evident and his attention to detail was impeccable. We believe he will be a leading figure in the industry in years to come.”

Andrew was awarded a range of prizes, including his choice of either a study grant to the value of $2000 or $2000 to spend at Carters and an Outward Bound Leadership Programme valued at over $3600, as well as the coveted title of Upper South Island Region Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 apprentice of the year.

Andrew will now go on to compete against the eight other regional Apprentice of the Year winners at the national finals in Auckland where each apprentice will

They will then compete in a practical carpentry challenge where each apprentice will be tasked with completing a small building project, which will be gifted to local charities on completion. The practical challenge will take place at The Cloud in Auckland on Friday, October 11 and will be open to the public from 8am to 12pm.

The winner of the Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 Apprentice of the Year will then be announced at an awards dinner at The Cloud, hosted by MC Paul Ego.

Police: teen’s disappearance ‘suspicious’ The disappearance three and a half years ago of Nelson teenager Leo LippNeighbours has finally been labelled suspicious by police Police investigating the disappearance, say information received from the public has led them to the conclusion that Leo’s disappearance may not be an accident.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney says a

dedicated investigation team had spent the last 10 months closely reviewing all aspects of 19 year-old Leo’s disappearance and the searches completed for him.

Leo was last seen in Watson St, Nelson on Sunday January 24, 2010. Neither he nor his distinctive orange Toyota Corolla station wagon has been seen since.

Noisy drummer no drama for neighbours

As a professional drummer and drum teacher Andreas Vitz has confessed to annoying his neighbours from time to time. But those days are now at an end after he installed a new soundproof room in his basement.

Andreas says he and his wife moved into their new Tahunanui home this year and after “annoying” some neighbours at their old home, he decided to not put his new neighbours through the same noise and install a soundproof room.

The result is impressive.

Andreas says he can now play as loud as possible and the neighbours, about 30 metres away, can’t hear a thing.

He is also a drum teacher so says his drums can be played up to eight hours a day and that he’s thrilled with the

new room which cost “a lot” but he wouldn’t say exactly how much.

The two main walls have two layers with a space in between them, two doors and special tiles on the floor, covered by heavy carpet. The false ceiling also helps block the noise and like the walls, has four layers of special gib board and two layers of special insulation with an air space between.

Andreas says the investment has paid off and he’s thrilled that he can jam all day and still have the neighbours say hi to him the following morning.

“I’m really happy with how it’s turned out, there was a lot of research that went into it and even the builder wasn’t sure if it would work. But I’m really happy with it, so are my students and of course my neighbours.”

In 2010 Crimestoppers offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the location of Leo and his vehicle. That reward is still in place. Crimestoppers will determine the amount of the reward to be paid, and will, if necessary, apportion payment where there is more than one claimant. It wasn’t your usual marketplace but members of the public were able to shop around for their vote on Saturday at a Municipal Market held at the Nelson Suburban Club.

Organised by the Nelson Residents Association, Nelson’s local body election candidates set up shop and talked policy to locals, who came along to put the hard questions to them about their vision for the region.

The ‘meet the candidates’ event allowed people from the community to get up close and personal with candidates and cover issues of concern, from funding for the arts, roading and infrastructure, to money spent and community projects. With no time limits or structured set up, candidates were able to sit down and talk freely to members of the public, all in one place.

The number of people sent a clear message to NZTA and the council, from the community, about their wish to have this matter dealt with and not delayed by politics. The organisers also want to acknowledge the support they have received from the NZ automobile association in relation to their road safety concerns.

More recently there was standing room only at a community forum which covered three main issues, Safety in the Tahunanui community, the development of a proposed shopping village by the Wakatu incorporation and road safety. Nelsonians continue to spend more

Nelson’s spending growth continues to impress, with sales increases of eight per cent in August.

Figures released yesterday by payments provider Paymark show spending through the Paymark network continued to increase in the final month of winter, with figures up 8.47 per cent in Nelson from August 2012 to August 2013, up on the national average of 7.6 per cent.

Nationally, the surge of activity in the last three months has been the largest jump, in seasonally adjusted terms, since the three months ending February 2008.

Spending on items, excluding fuel, was up a seasonally adjusted 2.7 per cent in the June to August three-month period compared with March to May this year.

When including the more volatile fuel spend, the quarterly growth rate rises to

3.5 per cent.

Paul Whiston, Paymark acting CEO, says the ongoing growth suggests the positive trend is more than just an anomaly.

“While the growth spurt we’ve seen over the last few months has come during the traditional quiet winter months, and it’s still inconsistent across regions and sectors, it’s very promising to see the higher spending patterns continue.”

Paymark, which processes around three quarters of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, saw that building outlets and hospitality providers were once again the big winners during August.

In Nelson, $77 million was spent through the Paymark network in August, up on $71 million last year.

The number of transactions also grew 1.5 million, up 7.1 per cent.

Local pool teams fall short

Nelson has fallen behind the eight ball for the second year in a row, failing at its attempt to regain the Seddon Pool Tournament by the slimmest of margins.

Marlborough Pool Association took out the two-day competition, held at Club Waimea, after winning 61 frames overall, just one ahead of the Nelson team that also finished runners up in 2012.

The Seddon Tournament is the biggest of its kind in the Top of the South, and is what “every individual male and female player works towards”, according to team spokesperson Donna Arps.

The top ten players from each province in the Seddon districts make up each

team with just eight competing in each round.

In the men’s draw Nelson drew 6-6 with Buller and 6-6 with Marlborough before going onto beat Westland 8-4 and West Coast 10-2 while the women’s team beat Buller 11-1 and West Coast 10-2 but tied with Westland 6-6 and lost 9-3 to Marlborough. Buller men took out the men’s section with 33 points, three ahead of Nelson, and the women’s trophy went the way of Marlborough who finished with 34 points, four above Nelson.

Donna says the Nelson team, which last won the tournament in 2011, played their hearts out but were disappointed to come so close only to lose.

Back to basics for gamers Forget X-Box, PlayStation or computer games, a new trend is taking off in Nelson and it’s actually an old trend.

Pottering About owner Steve Wilson, a self-confessed “board game nerd”, started a board game night at his inner city business about a year ago and the monthly gatherings have been attracting more and more faces ever since.

Steve says his cafe is usually packed during the games nights – which are held in conjunction with Crackerjack Toys. “We’re kind of board game nerds and we have a lot of people who are into board games so that’s how it started but now we get all sorts of

people that will come down, including a lot of families.”

He says the atmosphere in the café is really good with people talking and joking while playing their games.

“A lot of these board games you can play on your iPad now but these nights are about bringing back that sitting around have fun and talking while you’re playing the game instead of staring at a wall. And the games have a lot of the same attractions,” he says.

The next board game night is being held on September 20 at Pottering About in Buxton Square. Entry is a gold coin but all the games are free to play.

Irving Smith Jack Architects have prepared the concept drawings for several council-owned sites on Wakefield Quay, previously occupied by Four Seasons and Reliance Engineering.

“Concept plans show an attractive area intended for retail, hospitality and recreation, with increased parking and shared pathway connections between the waterfront and the city,” says Aldo.

Councillor Pete Rainey says they have consulted with Port Nelson who have said they will be looking at slight boundary adjustments which would enable greater access to the sites and the water. The final drafts of the concept plan and drawings will be presented on Friday, starting at 5pm and a presentation at 5.30pm.

Peggy Martin wanted to earn her first set of new golf clubs.

Having started off with a second hand set that she didn’t know “one end from the other” in 1952, Peggy’s goal was to play to a 16 handicap, which was just two below her own at the time.

But of course it just so happened Peggy achieved her goal around the time of her birthday, and was helped by her late husband Richard who went halves with her on a new set.

Peggy used those clubs right throughout her amateur playing career, which was highlighted by being the ladies immediate champion at the Totaradale Golf Club, until 2007 when her “aging bones were the boss” and she had to retire, passing them down to a family member.

Speaking ahead of Totaradale Golf Club’s 75th anniversary which is being held on October 5 and 6, the club’s life member explains that earning your new golfing equipment was just “what happened back then”.

“When the blokes came back from overseas you couldn’t just go out and buy top of the range. We were quite happy with our two clubs and a putter.”

Peggy, who didn’t start playing golf until her children were old enough, has many stories of when Richard treated her to new golfing equipment.

“I said to my husband ‘if I win the championship will you buy me something?’ I came home, he asked how I got on, I said ‘oh, okay’. He asked how much I won by, I said ‘oh

Because Richard was a butcher, Peggy says most of the time on the green happened during the weekends. And one day shortly after her own championship victory, she was handed an envelope. So, what was inside?

“This one,” Peggy smiles, pointing at the ring on her finger. “That was always a highlight, playing the golf to earn the prize.”

Growing up in Wakefield, Totaradale has been Peggy’s only golf club throughout her 60 plus year playing career. She played rounds on Tuesdays, which was ladies day, and then once on the weekend.

Peggy was a keen sportsperson, also dabbling in cricket and tennis, but says golf was always number one.

“I made a silly statement once that golf was a good game spoiled. You hit a ball and walk for miles to chase it. But I had to retract that phrase quite quickly. I enjoyed golf and I amazed myself that I could actually play it.”

Peggy, who now lives at Oakwoods, says social aspect of the club, which prides itself on being the friendliest, was second to none, and it’s something she will also look back on fondly.

“We all had families and you couldn’t afford to go to the night clubs so we made our own fun. I think Totaradale would take the prize for hospitality that’s for sure.”

Mark, who captained the side to second in the Robbie’s Premier League, was a rock at the back all season alongside Jonathan Gough who was deservedly named Most Promising Player after making the successful step up from division one. Others to pick up major awards were Supporters Player of the Year winner Ryan ‘Skippy’ Stewart and Young Player of the Year Coey Turipa. Playercoach Ben Wright was the golden boot winner with 13 goals for the season – enough to see him second in the league charts.

MoTorSporT: Nelson’s Ben Hunt still leads the New Zealand Rally Championship with one round to go but it might not be for long. Ben finished second at the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally on Saturday, behind Richard Mason, and currently has 109 championship points. While finishing inside the top four in the world would be a welcome result for any New Zealand hockey team, fourth place at an Olympic Games is often considered the worst position to finish, coming within one more spot of a medal.

Although Anita came home empty handed, the experience is something she will never forget and to recognize her efforts, the fastest woman in world hockey was presented with an Olympic pin from Sport Tasman on Friday.

The pin -- which is given to every athlete that has represented New Zealand at the Olympics -- has her Olympic number engraved on it, and was last presented in Nelson to Golden Bay cyclist Jack Bauer.

Anita described the presentation, which was held during the conclusion of the Marie Fry Trophy secondary school tournament, as "pretty special," before the pin was officially pinned on by former Olympian Jeff Rackley.

While Jack's presentation was held following the Games last year, Anita's busy schedule was finally vacated last

A well known athlete in her own right, Anita admits her inner sports fan came out when walking through the Olympic Village where thousands of other international sporting superstars were based.

"You'll just be strolling along and bump into LeBron James, Usain Bolt and Mo Farrah," she says. "I really wanted a picture with Usain Bolt but I actually ate my lunch too quick and he was gone.

The other girls got a picture and I was so gutted but you got to remember that they're there to compete, so you try to respect them."

Committed to the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup next year, Anita was more hesitant when asked about competing at the next Olympic Games in 2016. "At the moment I'm going year by year. After that I'll reassess and see where my life's taking me, what I wanna do, who's coaching, what the team's like. It's a long time away until Rio still so next year the focus is on making the teams."

And you never know, the fastest women's hockey player in the world might even be running on the track at the next Olympics after a reasonably successful sprinting stint over summer. "If I didn't make it for hockey I'd definitely be trying to go but maybe more for the relay squad. But we'll see. I'm going to continue to do it because it's good for my hockey and it's fun."

Could this be the year? The Tasman Makos have shot to the top of the ITM Cup Championship standings after thrashing former Shield holders Otago 49-16 in a slick all-round performance at Trafalgar Park on Friday night.

Behind a dominant forward pack, which caused the Southerners plenty of trouble at lineout and scrum time, the backs were given plenty of freedom to run riot with Tom Marshall leading the charge, and powerful winger James Lowe bagging two tries in the rout.

It was the second week in a row that Tasman scored 40 points or more, and on current form, there’s nothing to suggest that the team will stop at that, with a number of players already putting their hand up for higher honours – do we need to mention James Lowe again?

Mountain biking on the rise The first round of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club Cross Country Series was raced on the lower Codger’s Trails on Sunday.

The race was a short course multi-lap event which required plenty of gear changing on an undulating circuit.

A large turnout of riders started en masse up the Tantragee Rd turning on to the track at Summit Rd. Under 17 rider Scott Barr showed he is a rider with a strong future as he left the field behind with a scorching first lap of 11mins 46sec.

Mitchell Scott’s younger brother, Willis Scott made his starting debut for Otago in the loss – a proud night for family and friends with Mitchell coming on to score the final try of the match, already a contender for try of the year.

The Makos will travel north to Albany to face a winless North Harbour side this Friday night – a game they should win, before taking on Mike Coman’s Hawke’s Bay in Nelson the following weekend.

While all eyes will be on the North Harbour game this weekend, Tasman fans will also be hoping for a Taranaki win against Ranfurly Shield holders Counties Manakau. If Taranaki wins, and can see off Bay of Plenty in the first challenge, Tasman would get the second challenge – plenty of what ifs, but a real possibility.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The Dawnbreakers Fishing club held their Open Day on Sunday at their new venue the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, with a fantastic turnout of keen and interested anglers. There were over 80 members signed up for the new season on the day, with at least 60 per cent of those being new to the club. Being a nice hot sunny day with a BBQ going flat out, new members were able to meet and mingle with previous members to gain an appreciation of what the club is all about.

New members had various reasons for joining the club which included how to fish certain areas, learn new techniques from experienced fisherman to increase their hook up rates, be able to socialise on a regular basis, the use of measuring boards, partake in club fishing outings including day trips and weekends away. Everybody who hadn’t been to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club before were very impressed with the buildings well setup interior, its warm inviting atmosphere, to the decks that look out over the boat ramp and marina. With our club days now being on a Sunday afternoon from 3 till 5pm, there will be no better place to enjoy an afternoon drink and talk about fishing.

We already have club trips organised to Okiwi Bay, French Pass, and Havelock along with day trips around the Top of The South. Also on our Club Days we will have guest speakers from the likes of MAF, Niwa, Coastguard, and some of our own club members parting with their vast wealth of information gained from years of experience on the water. The only catch to enjoying not only the above information and club venue but the up to date fishing reports on when, where and how the fish are biting, is to join the club.

Our scouts are now out on a weekly basis following the snapper from D’urville Island to Tasman Bay and will keep us informed. D’urville is still producing some large double digit snapper with slow jigs doing the damage. Delaware and Cable Bay are still the best local spots for picking up gurnard, kahawai and small snapper at the moment and will continue to get better as the water temperature starts to rise.

Nayland College has proven to be the top basketball school in the South Island after beating Otago Boys High School 68-62 in the AA Zone 4 secondary school final on Saturday night.

In front of a raucous crowd at the packed out Nelson College for Girls gym, Nayland's fast paced side took control of the match, leading right throughout to win the title and cement itself as the South Island's top seed for the New Zealand Secondary School Basketball Premiership Tournament in four weeks time.

Coach Sam Dempster believes the victory puts Nayland in a strong position heading into the national tournament and he's backing the side to go further than last year's top four finish.

"The first thing with this tournament is you just want to qualify [for nationals] but when you actually win it, it means a lot, especially in front of our home town. We were second here twice in the last two years so it's good to get a W [win]," says Sam. "Last year we set ourselves up good but this year I feel we're in a better position ahead of nationals."

Plenty of Nayland players got significant minutes during the tournament, which was held at a mixture of gymnasiums across Nelson from Wednesday to Saturday. While regular contributors Angus Riley, Locky Campion and Jonas Kale had strong performances along with new recruit Akira Marsters, Sam acknowledged Nayland had poor shooting stats, and it was something that would be worked on in the coming weeks.

Nayland won't be the only Nelson team at the national tournament, with fourth placed Nelson College also qualifying.

The success in the boys draw wasn't mirrored in the girls section though with Waimea College (ninth) being the only local team inside the top ten.

Nayland College (12th) and Nelson College for Girls (14th) had to settle for minor placings.

As well as hosting the South Island basketball competition, two other major secondary school competitions were played here during tournament week with the Lotto Premier

Girls New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship and the Marie Fry Hockey Tournament being held at Saxton Field. While heavyweights Mt Albert Grammar School took out the football final 1-0 over Rangitoto College, local schools Nelson College for Girls (10th) and Waimea College (11th) had very strong tournaments and can hold their heads high. In the hockey, which was won by Westlake Girls High School, Nelson College for Girls finished 12th place and Waimea College finished 15th.

Surprise result for netball's semi finals It was down to the nitty gritty at Saxton Courts on Saturday as Nelson Netball’s semi finals were played in brilliant overhead conditions. There were some tired bodies given the fact that the local colleges had competed at the South Island Secondary School Tournament in Christchurch.

The season’s results count for nothing as the slate is wiped cleaned and anything can happen in semi-finals netball. The top four qualified for the semis with 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, which in theory should produce the top two teams for the final.

In Grade 2 Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro Black went into their semi as odds on favourites to beat Nayland College.

Nayland returned from Christchurch on a real high after winning seven of their eight games to finish third in B Grade. Richmond was depleted by injury while Nayland were on-song to take the game 25-22.

Suburban Blue and Stoke Accessman had previously met twice with the spoils being shared at one win apiece. It was evident from the first whistle that both teams were keen to gain a finals berth and there were numerous turnovers through court. While Stoke held a 7-5 advantage at the first break it could have

been far greater given the fact they only converted three of their eight turnovers.

The second period was Stoke’s best as they settled down and found their rhythm. Feeders Jaime Kingi and Casey Ballantyne put in a number of sublime feeds and their shooters rewarded them with conversions. Suburban’s circle defenders Tania Mangos and Dee Chisnall were a formidable unit as they toiled to foil Stoke’s offence. Shooter Deanna Hunter found her range in the second half to slot some superb long range shots to take the game 37-28.

Just shows you, anything goes in semi final netball with third placed Stoke Accessman to take on fourth placed Nayland College. Stoke have won the previous encounters but once again the slate is wiped clean for the final.

Table tennis back at Saxton Stadium

Excuses of rustiness were acceptable on Thursday night – the first time table tennis had been played at Saxton Stadium since April’s flood.

With the entire stadium out of action, Nelson Table Tennis was forced to relocate matches out to Club Waimea, albeit on a temporary basis.

But with the green light given by Nelson City Council to get back in the purpose-built facility, big numbers were drawn back to play again.

Association spokesperson Kay Hazeldine says while the offer to use Club Waimea was appreciated, it wasn’t an ideal situation, having to juggle their timetable around events being based at the Richmond facility. “We only had eight tables and the lighting was hard. You’d lose sight of the ball.

But it was somewhere for us to go,” she explains.

“It was terribly frustrating and if there was a funeral or something then we had to cancel.”

The biggest frustration was the fact just a week prior to the flood Nelson Table Tennis had been involved in an expo promoting the sport at Saxton Stadium, and a large number of new players were expected to join. “A lot of people were really keen and showed interest from that but now we’ve lost them. So we’re starting again really.”

While Kay admits she initially hoped the rebuild wouldn’t take as long as four months, she acknowledges the significance of the damage.

“It was just heartbreaking when we first walked in here. The water was all the way up the walls and they had to be taken out. The floor had to be removed. We lost our computer as well as two fridges in our kitchen area.”

But with everything now back to normal for Nelson table tennis players, the weekly schedule has not been changed and Wednesday nights remain open to the public with families allowed to play for just $10, and Kay says it’s awesome being back. “It’s great to be back. I think a few of us might be a bit rusty, I was anyway,” she laughs.

Coaching & Umpires The club has at least six qualified coaches and their expertise extends from beginners, or first time bowlers, through to higher level tournament play. In addition the club has a similar number of umpires, two of

whom hold International Certification.

Achievements Past and current members have achieved at the highest level with many national titles attained. Shannon McIloy is currently in Scotland representing NZ as a member of the Black Jacks, and last year Jimmy Pugh represented NZ playing against Australia in the under 25 age group. Last season our men’s Sevens’ Team won the national title for the second time and is one of only two clubs who have achieved this distinction. Also last year, Peter Hodson won the national singles title, and went on to Cyprus to Represent NZ in the Champion of Champions securing a bronze medal.

I am a born and bred Nelsonian - Phillipa and I have two children and I want to make a difference to this region, so our kids can grow up in a safe, happy and prosperous environment. In my six years leading council’s community services portfolio, we have achieved a lot and have some exciting work ahead to make Nelson an even better place to live. I want to continue to bring a positive, forward thinking, collaborative approach to council. I have co-organised the Smokefreerockquest national music competition for the last 25 years, and was awarded an MNZM in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the NZ music industry. I am artistic director for Nelson Opera in the Park and director of Eventiac, which runs the annual NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow, among other events. I put my time and effort into council because I love Nelson

Ruth Copeland

It has been an honour to serve as a Nelson City Councillor the past 3 years. I have found my voice around the table and have consistently championed economically focussed, socially progressive, and innovative solutions. We are making very good progress. Derek Shaw

Currently a City councillor, I have 30 years experience in local government.

I’m the co-portfolio holder Governance, co-chair of the Framing our Future Committee, and member of the Regional Transport Committee, Joint Shareholders Committee and Regional Sewerage Business Unit. I’m an accredited resource management commissioner (chair) and an active member of the Biodiversity and Sustainability forums. I’m married with three young adult children and operate a part-time publishing business, Nikau Press. I continue to be actively involved in the community, including being a trustee of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, the Tasman Regional Sports Event Trust, Nelson Environment Centre, as well as participating in athletics as an official and competitor.

If re-elected, I’m keen to continue using my experience, knowledge and energies in ensuring Nelson remains a great place to live, with our special heritage, arts, cultural, recreational and environmental features safeguarded, and that we have safe and resilient communities.

Kate Fulton

I’m a third generation Nelsonian. I attended Nelson College for Girls, completed a BSc(Hons) at University of Canterbury and a PhD in biomedical research at Cambridge University. I have three children and we lived overseas in Cambridge UK, then Melbourne, where I worked at Monash University, before returning to Nelson in 2009. In 2010, I was elected as a Nelson City Councillor.

I co-shared Policy and Planning portfolio and have a strong interest in public health and community well being. I have worked on council’s Vision 2060, its Social Wellbeing Policy and the draft Local Alcohol Policy. My ability to work collegially, whilst retaining integrity, is a strength which will ensure my decision making is efficient and effective, for our communities now and in the future. I have current conflicts of interest with the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB): I am a Nelson City Councillor. To the best of my knowledge and belief, I have no other conflicts of interest with the NMDHB at the date of my notice of consent to being nominated as a candidate for membership of the board of the NMDHB.

Kent Robertson

Kent Robertson is a name well–known to Nelsonians. From his 20 years as a local broadcaster and the huge community commitment this involved to his work with both the Nelson Civic and Nelson 2000 Trusts, Kent has proven his ability to bring together businesses, organisations and skilled individuals to make things happen. The construction of the Sealord Marine Rescue ramp, re-invigoration of Wakefield Quay, and the new Nelson Plunket Rooms are particular project highlights among many. As a husband and father of two, and now working in IT, Kent’s decision to stand for Nelson City Council is based on a determination to work within council to get the best for Nelson. Roads and footpaths make our city work and arts and culture make us sparkle - but there has to be a balance. Kent stands on a policy of affordable progress - value for money rates, and sensible policies that are still future focussed.

Tim Skinner

Tim Skinner is a born and bred Nelsonian with a passion for social justice issues and building a healthy safe community. He has successfully built up a professional photography business over 15 years, and has prior experience studying marketing, finance, science and technology at Massey University. Prior to his own business, he was involved in a corporate marketing company in Auckland City.

Tim has a strong desire to ensure Nelson is an affordable place to live and raise a family. He is married with three young boys aged 1, 8 and 10 years and is a keen footballer. He has many years of voluntary work experience in leadership roles for youth work and sports. Tim thrives on challenges and finding innovative solutions.

Tim embraces Nelsons lifestyle and wants to ensure continued economic growth and stability in Nelson for future generations, and is a strong voice for Nelson citizens.

Mike Ward

I am an athlete, a parent and a selfemployed artist. Since retiring from the classroom and returning to Nelson thirty-five years ago I have completed five terms as a City councillor and one as a Member of Parliament and served on a range of sporting, cultural and community organisations. I am currently patron of Lifeline Nelson, a JP and co-chair of Council’s Framing our Future committee and co-portfolio holder Policy and Planning.

Nelson is a most beautiful and fortunate city and this term’s 2060 process has asked what we must do to make it even more beautiful as well as safer, healthier, fairer, wiser, friendlier and above all sustainable. It has been the most exciting and farsighted initiative during my political career and whether returned to Council or not I am committed to working with this community to flesh out the vision and make it happen.

Of course it’s still essential that the council is affordable, operates efficiently, delivers core services, executes legislative requirements, but we also need to provide arts, sports, and cultural infrastructures thus ensuring our city is an attractive vibrant proposition for investment, jobs and families.
